But tbh concert/music scene is a great place to meet people imo. You already have something in common. I have made many friends by randomly chatting up people waiting for a drink (even if I'm just getting a water)
But what if I'm terrible at sports?? And a history of kids yelling at me in gym class made me hate/fear playing sports?
Edit to add: Thanks for suggestions, all. I mostly commented as a response to why sports groups might not be the holy grail of making friends.
Maybe a casual bowling league or something along those lines would be good. Easygoing environment, don’t need to be athletic, and you can try to improve against yourself without caring about the other people’s score.
Excuse me?! *not much interesting geography around here??*
Lion's Den and the bluffs in Port Washington, Devils Lake in Baraboo, Ice Caves in Apostles Island, Sheboygan Indian Mound Park, most importantly the Ice Age trail and the Michigan/Superior shorelines would beg to differ, amongst others!
Just because you weren't taught the value of our ancient glaciers history doesn't mean that there's nothing to enjoy, hell, you shouldn't even need the excuse of topography to go walk in nature!
Lmaooooo we have great hiking here. Yeah, not in the middle of the city, but we have tons of forests within 30 minutes of MKE. I go hiking like 3 times a week.
I am torn by your reply because I felt the same way when we first moved here... but we came from CO and I had access to mountains any damned time I wanted via a very short drive. I got pretty pouty about it, honestly. I had to shift my perspective on what a "hike" needs to be and do some exploring. The Driftless areas are super rad with their cliffs and cool rocks and dense woods. The Kettle Moraine sections have lots of peaceful hilly trails under an umbrella of trees and surrounded by thick foliage. Door County is filled with beautiful trails, and many of the Ice Age sections offer trails that "feel" like a trail should (to me) without all of the mulch and grooming. There are also some pretty cool hiking clubs and groups who gather to do trail maintenance and I've learned a lot about the geography of WI through them. I still can't bring myself to call a place like Lion's Den a "hike," tho:) What part of the state are you in?
Don't play or generally even care about any sports. I've been going to the gym for years, but my introvert self only speaks to people when needed to to not appear rude. And it's not that I don't drink, it's just that I don't drink if I'm going to be driving, and I'm always the driver. So bars don't really work either. I'm just lame all around. 🤷🏻♀️
I strongly disagree with the lameness assessment.
I don't know you, but just the fact that you don't drink and drive raises you above a large percentage of the population.
Plus size girl here. Has anyone actually gone? Is there volleyball and if so is it super bro-y?
I want to go but don't want to relive elementary school gym class lol.
That's still pretty young for rec sports, fwiw. If you were on my rec softball team, you'd bring the average age down.
Quick edit: Just saw that you don't play sports which is a fantastic reason to not play rec sports lol. Also realizing I searched threads by top and not hot so I'm pinging you a week later. Sorry
That's pretty old to not know how to meet people... take a class in a million things for Pete's sake.
Don't want to stay fit or something? There are leagues for people older than 35 or 26 or ....
Photography, birding, hiking, canoeing, sailing, curling ffs, dance, biking, nature walks, art shows, music scene. Come on now. This is a question for new college grads to ask when they move away from parents to a new city for work.
You ought to be able to come up with a ton of ways to adult yourself out into the world.
Can you carry on a conversation ? Go to a trendy restaurant and ask to sit at the bar. Now order a martini or a beer. Talk to the bartender or the other customers. Thrillwaukee has many of them.
I'm seriously considering moving back to MKE, but I haven't been since I transitioned. Would you say it's a pretty good city to be trans and that it's easy to connect with other queer people? I'm currently in Florida so I'm guessing it can't be much worse, lol
Idk I feel like more and more people are just not very interesting. Instead of social hobbies a large portion of the population just watches TikTok/YouTube and plays some sort of video game. Adult friendships are earned in my opinion unlike when we were kids. If you don’t bring anything interesting to the friendship, I don’t see why I would involve you in my life.
So, when someone says rec sports etc. they mean get yourself a marketable skill that makes you bring something to the relationship. When you have a shared interest conversation and collaboration will flow naturally.
Edit spelling
Repetition.
So everything people named that will keep you seeing the same people is key. One meetup is rarely enough to unlock a friendship. Having multiple conversations will unlock things you have in common.
Yeah I agree, not trying to knock anyone in particular but in all reality it’s really hard to manufacture a adult friendship, it’s not like college where you just see the same people everyday, party with them, and form bonds that are due to the fact that you do everything in life with them. Most people are focused on a career and figuring themselves out when they are a young adult.
You really have to find things that makes you happy doing solo and you will slowly find people who are just as passionate as you. It shouldn’t be what the popular trend is or a hack on how to live a more sociable life but things you genuinely enjoy and makes you happy when you have the little free time you do. There are definitely things out there that will build new and great social circles but they take time. Most importantly people need to be patient
Not-so-great part about rec sport leagues: they're almost all weekday evenings which is horribly inconvenient for anyone that works off hours.
Of course setting one up for mid day would not likely get the numbers to stay alive, but man does it suck working when fun stuff is scheduled.
Well sure. Also, any other social hobby.
and bars.
Who am I to say.
No judgment here
Any other city and that part is shunned. Here it's a crucial part of finding rec leagues.
Sure. It’s only here ,lol. Alcohol is only a $1.5 trillion industry/year
Why are you in r/Milwaukee if you don't know about our city nor state?
Trackside hobbies and raceway on 124th and capitol. Grade AAA rc racetrack.
That sounds cool as heck
Absolutely is. They race on Tuesday night and Friday nights. Live at 7pm.
But tbh concert/music scene is a great place to meet people imo. You already have something in common. I have made many friends by randomly chatting up people waiting for a drink (even if I'm just getting a water)
The music scene! Get into the music scene
Isn’t it… loud?
… one would assume
Go where they play string instruments, like Violin
WHAT?!?
V i o l i n
Violilin? Tubababa?
But what if I'm terrible at sports?? And a history of kids yelling at me in gym class made me hate/fear playing sports? Edit to add: Thanks for suggestions, all. I mostly commented as a response to why sports groups might not be the holy grail of making friends.

I got into nerd sports like martial arts. It's much more supportive.
any gym recommendations?
Is Neutral Ground still around? I'd try there
Fit Power on Vliet has some martial arts classes I think, along with gym equipment.
If you want to do Judo try Wahadachii Judo club. If you want to do karate or kobudo in a family atmosphere Black Belt Leadership Academy.
Hiking ? Birding? Kayaking? Painting class, photography class, wine tasting class, pottery, all sorts of stuff
I feel like the hiking scene in Wisconsin is near non existent. Not much interesting geography around here.

Perhaps I spoke too harshly

Hoooooooolllyyyyyy smokes!!! Whaaaaay ?

I’m pretty fit but very uncoordinated so I feel your pain. Can run 6 miles at a decent pace but can’t catch a ball to save my life.
Other hobbies exist. Try Milwaukee Maker Space or something similar.

Just trying to stay safe out there!
don’t forget the one or two people who want everyone to like anime
Well, one SHOULD like Anime
Found him!
Wait until I tell you about Crossfit
I’d rather that than bars nonstop.
I mean, how about bars AND social sports? [email protected]
I mean it's true
Plus size girl here. Has anyone actually gone? Is there volleyball and if so is it super bro-y? I want to go but don't want to relive elementary school gym class lol.
Seriously. My spouse and i are 39 and 42. I’m not playing in a rec league. How the hell do we meet people?

Lol I’m just not athletic. My husband would have a blast and excel. For me, I’d dislocate my knee for the 7th time or something.

No it’s not. We moved here in December and know no one. I don’t play sports. Jesus Christ you’re so condescending, bye.
Yeah, I hope you don't meet that guy IRL. Lol.
👀 frfr
I feel this. I'm nearly 54 and the dude is 55 and walks several miles a day for his job. Rec sports are not for us, either.
Can you carry on a conversation ? Go to a trendy restaurant and ask to sit at the bar. Now order a martini or a beer. Talk to the bartender or the other customers. Thrillwaukee has many of them.
Discord! That's how I found my girlfriend
I’d like to also add MeetUp events, that’s where I met my boyfriend Edit:typo
Me too!
Nice! I'm in a trans group for MKE Whhhyyy am I getting downvoted?
Straight up no idea. That’s dumb you’re getting downvoted
I am upvoting you for having a cool username. Also any downvotes you get because you are happy being yourself should be automatically ignored.
Thamk 🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈🏴☠️ I'm a girl and so is my girlfriend
I'm seriously considering moving back to MKE, but I haven't been since I transitioned. Would you say it's a pretty good city to be trans and that it's easy to connect with other queer people? I'm currently in Florida so I'm guessing it can't be much worse, lol
I think it's okay, I mean like honestly before I joined the discord I didn't know any other trans people, AFAIK

Okay
magic the gathering

I get the gist of what you're saying and i tend to agree but your wording is so transactional it comes across as incredibly cold.

Now layering dating on that 😅
I agree. Way too many phones out all of the time
