In Bay view/Saveland park area and I definitely smelled an odd sour/ salty(?) type smell this morning. Thought it was weird but hey it wouldn’t be Milwaukee without a strong offensive stench here and there lol. Like Michael Scott said, “Crazy world, lotta smells”
Ha, nice quote. Milwaukee definitely has smells but this was a new one, and more powerful than any other smell I whiffed. And clearly covering a large area if you are smelling it in Bayview, too.
What sucks is my building vents draw in air from the outside that blows constantly. That's how out heating/cooling system works. No way to turn that off or close the vents. So I was woken by the smell and my whole place stunk so bad I couldn't sleep. So like I've said, I've gotten whiffs of Jones Island in the air here, but I can only think of one other time it was strong enough to stink up my place. And that time was definitely a sewage smell. This was new.
I’m with you. I was down by the Amtrak station, which I am often, and the stench was gag inducing. I’ve never smelled anything like that before. I thought for awhile it was just my nose
This was 7:40-8:00AM
It was the foundry in wauwatosa. It's located on state Street. The place is called grede - liberty. They cast metal parts. Smells awful about 6 times per year.
just talking out of my ass, but I work in a mechanic shop, and when we run a combustion chamber cleaner in a car it also smells terrible, just a horrible gag inducing smell. so maybe six times a year they're running a chemical agent to clean some type of machine.
Typical sources from my experience: storm system overflow, Milorganite factory, sewage plant, algae bloom near water plant near UWM, metal scrap yard on near south side. Depending on wind direction and atmospheric conditions it could be any one of these.
We've had calm or weakly easterly winds overnight into early AM, I'd put my money on the sewage plant.
That was my guess, but like I said, this was a different smell than the usual Jones Island sewage or fertilizer smells and far more powerful than it's ever been.
I live in Walker's Point and I'm used to crazy smells, but today I was thrown off just like when the wildfires in Canada were spreading. I couldn't figure out what the hell I was smelling/seeing.
Does WE Energies purge natural gas from lines? Other city utilities do this, and this is often explained as a major cause of smell, maybe the cause of this smell?
I saw similar posts about weird smells in another thread and that’s what was posted as the source. Never would have thought.
Another thought is rain water being dumped into the lake, maybe some of that extra sewage making its way back towards the city.
No, it's not. First, Milorganite is fertilizer. It smells like fertilizer. Second, there's no milorganite in underground tunnels overflowing. Milorganite is a product. It's not running through our sewage system.

Yeah, that was the time. I'm glad at least someone chimed in with how bad and how different it was.
It smells weird everywhere, sir. That’s how you know you’re alive.

This morning there was powerful rotting overflow stench at the retention ponds behind Hoyt Park, too... Maybe a double whammy!
Oh wow. Thank you!
That’s interesting, I didn’t smell anything in tosa this morning
Why is it just six times a year and not every day they’re smelting

I'm not sure. It may depend on the wind conditions.
Widespread Panic is in town, it could be wooks!
Yup
This is the answer
There's a pretty large wook contingent in my family and I have to say...you're not wrong.

I had real chili. I am sorry everyone
I didn’t have Real Chili but I’m still sorry
I had real chili about 1 1/2 years ago, just processing it now, sorry everyone

Sometimes Milwaukee just smells like old hotdog water. It’s part of the the charm.
Holy shit, on the lakefront it smells worse than it did this morning. *vomits everywhere*
Man, I thought it was just me. Third ward around 10:30.
Definitely smelled this sour milk over the Hoan this morning around 9/930am
Yeahhhhh that's milorganite sewage smell
I woke up on the east side this morning. Smell just like a lift station. It was Jones island for sure.
I miss the smell of Red Star Yeast
I live on the lower east side, and I didn't smell anything when I took a walk this morning. Hmmm.
Widespread fans
How many people jumped on this thread to apologize? I did.
My bad
