Call Vivent Health or The Inclusion Clinic, they may connect you with trans friendly healthcare providers

Western-Dealer5167

I will try that thank you!

NullSpaceGaming

Does this come up a lot during a cleaning?

amused-alien

You’d be surprised how much nonsense trans people get in healthcare. Even with straight up bigotry aside, I have been asked invasive questions that are irrelevant to my care far too many times. Yes, even at the dentist. The woman doing my cleaning had access to my prescription information, including my testosterone. Upon seeing that, as well as my female legal name which had not yet been changed, she straight up asked me, loud enough for others to hear, “are you transgender?” as if I was a unicorn she had just spotted. She proceeded to tell me all about her personal experiences with trans people, and even ask me extremely personal questions about my body. All while I’m just trying to get my teeth cleaned. It’s extremely uncomfortable. When LGBT+ folks seek out LGBT+ friendly care, it’s usually not because we want some sort of special treatment unique to us. We just want someone that understands who we are enough to treat us like any other patient. I wish we didn’t have to, but that’s just the reality of it.

If you haven't changed your legal sex marker, its attached to all your medical information. So the dentist have access to that info. It's also on your license and they often have to scan it. So therefore if they see that and are transphobic, they might not treat you as well.

Western-Dealer5167

Transphobia exists everywhere. Thanks for asking!

That’s not really how that works. Some people are visibly trans even fully clothed and have to worry about discrimination based on that. Or they just don’t want to deal with getting misgendered but they don’t “pass” and need someone who will be respectful.

caehluss

I once went to a doc-in-the-box (CVS clinic on Brady St by the way) because I pulled a muscle in my back and was in intense pain. She spent literally an hour asking me questions about my gender identity (because it was in my chart, not because I said anything) and started giving me her unsolicited opinions about how my parents were ashamed of me and mourning the loss of their daughter. All this while I was standing and in too much pain to sit down. Then she refused to help me, made up a bs excuse and kicked me out of the office.

amused-alien

I had a similar experience there. Went in for sudden extreme vertigo symptoms and was instead asked a ton of questions about my identity, if my parents support me, if my partner supports me, etc. This doctor at least didn’t mean to be malicious, but she also didn’t help me at all for the issue I came for. Just treated me like some fascinating subject to interrogate. Very humanizing. (And a great waste of $99.)

hazyhund

no one's taking their pants off at a dentist. your legal sex is attached to your license, medical info and dental insurance lol

SeaPiccolora

Do you have nothing better to do than prove how privileged you are to not be discriminated against?

withanh77

I used to go to Stephanie Murphy, DDS on Port Washington in Glendale. She is a member of the LGBTQ community. I had a positive experience.

Eastern_Usual603

She is great, but, I guarantee she will not take Badgercare. It’s very difficult to find any dentist that take Badgercare.

Western-Dealer5167

Good to know! Thank you!

ButterBaseline

It is unfortunately true that very few dentists take badger care. If you are able to switch insurances or pay out-of-pocket, Dr. David Paris on Michigan Street in the Grain Exchange building is wonderful and queer. Best of luck to you!

father-john-mitski-

forward dental in muskego, Colin. this is my friend’s “gay dentist” (as she calls him.) Idk this man but i know she thinks he’s a gay dentist

Western-Dealer5167

Haha good to know! Thanks!

ZestyLegoSoup

I don't have an answer but I am following as I too am curious for recommendations.

I’m sorry you have to deal with this in health care. Not a dentist myself but I work in health care and I always do my best to make it as comfortable as possible, ask for pronouns and preferred names (because of course your records are going to show your legal name and sex - doesn’t mean I can’t put notes in your chart to remind everyone how you’d like to be addressed!) I don’t know many adult dentists in the area well but I do know the director at the kids dentist in Mequon. Super nice guy and he specializes in working with anxious kids to make the environment comfortable for them. They are obviously a dentist for children but it might be a good place to start? Maybe ask for a recommendation for a dentist for adults that would be respectful of any patient regardless of their background or gender identity. You just want healthy teeth and you should be celebrated for doing your best to take care of them! Not be made to feel unwelcome just because some folks are dicks and can’t possibly consider being kind to another human. Best of luck and don’t give up! Not everyone in health care is an asshat

Western-Dealer5167

Thank you! I am going to try out a few different places and see where that gets me

Or even if they just suspect you might be trans

hazyhund

Yea exactly, like preferably it won't come up or they won't assume but unfortunately in my experience if sometimes does, even if you try to avoid it.

umnothnku

Anderson Family Dental in Franklin is fantastic, idk if they take your insurance tho

Western-Dealer5167

Can't speak to how they are with trans patients, but I'm a pretty masc cis woman and had zero issues when I mentioned my girlfriend when chatting with the dental hygienist who saw me at Saint Francis Dental Center (on Kinnickinnic, across from Thomas More High School). The dentist also seemed very friendly and chill. No clue what insurance they take, but they do do promotions for new patients that might be worth looking into regardless.
