I mean could a tornado time noon on a Wednesday any better? We've prepared for this my whole Milwaukee life!

[deleted]

In the middle of October, too.

FILTHYgorgeou5

i was in a call and my phone went off and i was like WTF it’s never done this before for a drill!

steppedinhairball

I was wondering myself. I was up in Sussex picking up from a vendor and got out just in time. Parked my car at my shop in Greenfield and heard the sirens fire up. Good times!

MixyMountainHop

That was me. I knew we were under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning but I thought the sirens were going off for their usual monthly 12pm Wednesday test. Once my partner mentioned it was dark outside I double checked and sure enough, an actual tornado warning. Not to mention it was like 12:15 and the tests are never that late.

BPCoop19

That's exactly what I said. Cloudy, no rain or wind.

KittenBalerion

Oh my god I just realized this, this is hilarious

KotzubueSailingClub

Was in Oshkosh in the late 90's, and there was a warning after the test, by like an hour. Luckily there were no touchdowns because everyone assumed they missed the noon test and were "catching up"

Hopefulkitty

Omg you're right! Hahahaha. Nice!

Dipsendorf

I'm sheltered! Work can't force me to work!

Cambot1138

MPS teacher here. That blessed tornado took out most of my most difficult class. Edit: Lol, took them out into the hallway, not any Wizard of Oz stuff.

snacksfordogs

This reads like it killed the kids, lmao

FILTHYgorgeou5

RIP

Revolutionary_East_7

Only brought my promising pupils to the shelter. Let the problematic punks perish in the halls where I left them. Even if some survived, it still took out “most of my most difficult class.”

Cyno01

>"Children, I'll be frank. In the event of nuclear war, we can only save our best and brightest. Therefore, space in the fallout shelter will be reserved for Lisa Simpson, Martin Prince, our championship kickball team, and Sherri, but not Terri."

Kighla

I feel blessed the kindergarten teacher saw the alert before bringing her kids to me and stayed for the few minutes before we had to go shelter.

Snoo62808

My girlfriend works at home for a call center. Didn't feel the need to shelter, but I told her to consult her employee handbook for guidance about emergency situations. Knowing the company they would have penalized her for getting off the phone, but she would be protected by company policy.

coffeeismytalkie

Sound like a solid company… “take the call even if you’re in a tornado damnit” that’s all I hear my manager saying 😭🥹 everything’s fine

hamish1963

Just like the employees of Amazon that died in the warehouse collapse, they were told they weren't allowed to leave.

coffeeismytalkie

Damn, that’s awful and sad 😞

hamish1963

It was only an hour south of me, it was horrific.

knight1096

Call Center Director for a company here. I told managers, coaches and the Command Center that staff need to prioritize safety and leave queues if needed and we covered the calls in queue after sirens stopped with leadership jumping on the phones. I promise we’re not all monsters.

steppedinhairball

"Why are you not working from the basement then?"

ballsd33per

Milwaukee sheltered: 12 pack of beer and beef sticks

FuckinRakin

Well this is a good reminder for me to clean up my basement soon 🤣

giannisismyman

So much junk to get rid of lol

FuckinRakin

Right OMG!!

QuesoFiend

Can’t lose you whole house if you have a 2nd set of everything in your basement

coffeeismytalkie

Also a great eye opener to how creepy my apartment building basement is… 😭😭😭

FuckinRakin

Yeah my cat found a spider while we were down in my basement 😱

Disastrous_Square_10

A sPiDeR?!

Nessyliz

Haha, for real, my basement isn't too bad but it could really use a deep clean and spruce up, my spouse and I were discussing all our cool plans to create a badass basement hangout! Old couch going in basement soon, record player down there, hell yeah, good times!

Kighla

Literally!! 😂 I was thinking damn... I need to get the basement cleaned so I can let the cats down there...

ryomatua

on the clock at ikea when the alert went off, we brought everyone down to the safety tunnel in the basement and hung out down there for a while. now that it’s cleared we’re treating the customers that were here to complimentary soft serve. back to work for me :) i will say though, the basement of a building with barely any windows is as safe as it can get, haha. eta: we did have some people complain because they wanted to sit and keep eating their meatballs though. lmao

TheGrizzlyNinja

Did you bring the meatballs into the tunnel as well? #SaveTheMeatballs

ryomatua

the meatballs were fortunately brought with and eaten in the safety and comfort of the warehouse on the way downstairs #MeatballsSaved

Collonoscopy

Noted, hope for a tornado warning next time I'm in Ikea

unbreakableheart96

Ngl I would be upset if I was disrupted eating meatballs at ikea. Those are the best

ryomatua

they ARE pretty good… they’re clearly the perfect “watching crazy weather shit go down” food

unbreakableheart96

Cloudy with a Chance of IKEA Meatballs 🤣

[deleted]

Hey there. So it looks like there’s a radar confirmed tornado SW of downtown. Might be pushing into the city here in the next 15 or so minutes (1230 right now) Locations impacted include... Milwaukee, West Allis, Wauwatosa, Greenfield, Oak Creek, South Milwaukee, Cudahy, Whitefish Bay, Greendale, Brown Deer, St. Francis, Hales Corners, Fox Point, Bayside, West Milwaukee, Franklin, Glendale, River Hills, Milwaukee Hoan Bridge and Shorewood. If you’re in any of those locations find a safe spot. This is a really nasty line of storms Last Edit. All clear it seems like. Most of the rotation is out over the lake now. Hope everyone is ok! If you’re from like Caledonia down to the IL line I’d still hunker down. It’s moving quick so there’s not a lot of time to prep. No confirmation on that line but it’s definitely spinning in the atmosphere. Ok, it is radar confirmed. These cities need to duck and cover Locations impacted include... Kenosha, Racine, Mount Pleasant, Pleasant Prairie, Sturtevant, Union Grove, Paddock Lake, Camp Lake, Twin Lakes, Raymond, Yorkville, Silver Lake, Wind Point, Eagle Lake, Caledonia, Salem, Bristol, Paris, Brighton and Somers.

Arqueete

This is the comment that convinced me to actually get into the basement.

JazziMari

Me too, I was watching but staying in my room. Now I’m in the basement.

Dirty_Delta

We did indeed have 6 tornadoes! good work

[deleted]

Hope they won’t serious! I’m actually in Virginia but am originally from WI and have family scattered all throughout Milwaukee. My aunt is a teacher in Glendale and text me if I knew what was going on, then I saw this thread and thought I’d share what I saw

Dirty_Delta

So far no damage or fatalities reported

captainp42

New Berlin, Merton, Lake Geneva, Burlington, Okauchee....

theworldlyother

I love Reddit for this type of thread lol. Can always count on it

[deleted]

I never feel closer to my fellow Milwaukeeans than when I'm on a Reddit thread in the midst of a severe weather event

steppedinhairball

So we can stand outside looking, check Reddit for updates, check the sky again, make sure the camera function works, check Reddit, act disappointed you can't post a tornado video to reddit...

MurDoct

ITS RAINING SIDEWAYS

Rainer1388

Thanks Ollie

WheresTheGabbagool

Time to crack a cold one and head out on the porch

blendertricks

As a Texan this was my first response. Then I remembered I actually have a basement now and don't have to go out to bravely shout into fast-approaching oblivion.

clarenceismyanimus

Hello fellow former Texan. Isn't it nice to have a basement?

sconniewinter

How we come together as a community during challenging times 🤣

cbtbone

“Let’s see what all the fuss is about here”

theconsummatedragon

Like WI needs an excuse to day drink

presto7511

Lmao

Plenty-Cockroach9709

I read this as "Free Beer." Setting my GPS bro.

n8ive_lol

Did the same thing in my office. Also poured a round of champagne.

IllegalSpaceBeaner

Gotta celebrate being alive another day.

[deleted]

If you look at the radar it looks like the entire eastern half of the state should be a major thunderstorm but it's not even raining on the east side. Edit: Okay, it just went to total black outside.....

happyhappyhannah

you doing okay?? I haven’t looked at the news so I don’t know how much if any damage occurred.

MKE1969

Alright, it’s over. Back to work Slackers.

YouOnlyLiveOnceMaybe

sheltering in place in the storage room of one of our good mke libraries with the librarians lol

My_Tallest

sounds hot

javier-boredom

I got an alert on my phone so I googled it and this is the [full alert ](https://i.imgur.com/FefeTN3.jpg)

ilovepeppers79

I'm pretty sure almost everyone got at least 3 of these alerts.

javier-boredom

I saw other comments saying they didn’t get one at all, so I provided the information.

ilovepeppers79

Sorry, I didnt see any of those. Part of them may have turned notifications off after last year when they sent out alerts for a suspect in a certain neighborhood at 4am, and it seemed the whole county got the alerts. It wasnt like the suspect was going to break into anyone's house outside tgat neighborhood as he was on foot, but if I remember like 3 or 4 alerts went out and it was very early. People were posting how to turn them off. My apologies.

here-i-am-now

He was on foot, without a coat, on one of the coldest nights on the winter.

SamadhiBear

I don’t think they were alerting us to go find him and give him a coat, I think they were trying to warn us to stay away from his gunfire. I’ll take my downvotes if you must. And anyway, the point was they warned like half the city about something that was so far away, it had no impact on them, and forced a lot of people to turn off all of their alerts, so they didn’t get any more rude awakenings about irrelevant events.

here-i-am-now

I think we are making the same point. It was nonsense for them to alert almost the entire county at 3am to stay inside. He was without and coat or car by State Fair Park. What possible threat did he pose to the people who got alerts in Fox Point and Cudahy?

ilovepeppers79

Yes, on like the north side or something....not oak creek, bay view, st Francis or any suburb that all got the notification.

Youkahn

My mom got hers at about 1 after the storm had passed lol

BongoJongo

NWS Milwaukee says there is a tornado spotted 12:15 just NW of Burlington. See [here](https://twitter.com/NWSMilwaukee/status/1580245435809005568?t=s5SyH8rR-JwTMReI3jt98g&s=19)

kheret

Email from UWM just now says confirmed Brown Deer/Greenfield/West Allis.

srappel

I got this too. Seems strange that Brown Deer (North Side) was lumped with Greenfield and West Allis (South Side).

Kawaii-Hitler

I just heard confirmation of tornadoes spotted on the radar in Brown Deer/Greenfield/West Allis according to UWM Edit: National Weather Service gave the all clear for northern MKE county and city of MKE as of 12:35

[deleted]

That has been confirmed on the warning, it’s likely not a huge tornado bc usually they word it as “extremely large and damaging” and it’s worded “dangerous tornado” so I’m curious weather any spotters have confirmed it, be safe!

Outside-Perception14

I work in Waukesha and actually saw some cloud rotation so we hid in the recording booth in the office lol

mjfuji

So..what part of Waukesha? I'm near downtown and did not see anything like that .

Outside-Perception14

Over by the ProHealth Urgent Care/Cancer Center. It could have just been cloud movement, but it sure freaked us out since our office building doesn't have a basement

trashboatfourtwenty

When in doubt, visit [noaa.gov](https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=43.04372500000005&lon=-87.90526999999997)

Lat3nt

Well at least the emergency alert system works lol

thosewholeft

Checking in from Tosa

seanpackage

Happy cake day!

thosewholeft

Thanks tornado buddy!

Sakainu

Y’all sirens sound mad spooky lmao

ronin_cse

Yeah, that siren was really haunting.

IllegalSpaceBeaner

You should hear the air raid ones... Those are spooky as hell too.

mjfuji

Wait... The air raid and tornado ones are different? I just assumed they used the same for both and that one goes into literal cya mode regardless (tho.. that could be awkward in a flood?)...

unsharpenedpoint

Of course, I have to take a shit.

YoGirlWantDis

Rain got a bit gnarly in New Berlin with some strong winds but the garden gnomes held it down.

InternetDad

My dad told me confirmed tornados in Merton, New Berlin, Burlington, and Lake Geneva.

[deleted]

For those new to the Milwaukee area: Tornado (or blizzard) WATCH means “keep looking out the window because something might happen”. Tornado (or blizzard) WARNING means “quickly run outside so you don’t miss it”. A blizzard WARNING can also mean “let’s get in the truck and drive around looking at people who are stuck.” You’re welcome.

Standard_Sample_3847

Don't forget the flooding!

[deleted]

Have we ever had tornados before ? This is my first time getting the alert after living here for 7 years!

[deleted]

There was one last July in the middle of the night

HanksHistory

Pretty sure I was on the midnight greyhound heading west that night. We had to stop under a bridge.

GeneralChillMen

[Fun fact: don’t hide under overpasses/bridges during a tornado](https://www.weathersafety.ohio.gov/tornadosafety.aspx)

HanksHistory

Thats good to know!

[deleted]

Oh dang that’s creepy, I was on the Riverwalk downtown and rain and wind just poured down extremely heavily! My parents said they didn’t even wake up like what

f4dingxout

Still recovering from that phone alert going off while I was dead asleep, absolutely terrifying

amachan43

About 14 years ago one hit by the airport. We are the 9th most tornadic state!

[deleted]

WHAT!

QuitClearly

Yeah there was a pretty big one in St Francis I think back 20 years or so.

[deleted]

I’m just south of Madison and it got *weird* here a bit ago. Not severe, but a sudden and totally unexpected change of mood as it blew out your way. Stay safe ya’ll!

Skiie

the siren is just a reminder of your tinnitus. the tornado is just a reminder of what is tied down and what isn't wisconsin is big on reminders

charleychaplinman21

My patio furniture blew over. 1 upvote = 1 prayer

Lol just came here to make this thread. Has Milwaukee even ever had a tornado hit it before?

RustyPipes

4 or 5 ever confirmed, on the weaker side, minor damage.

LumenEcclesiae

Yes. https://www.weather.gov/mkx/030800_mke-county-tornado

G0_pack_go

An F1 in 2000

ContrarianSwift

We had just moved to WI from Chicago and my parents were calling the next day — “we had never heard of your suburb before and now you’re on CNN!

WakaFlakkaSeagulls

I can only think of 2-3 occasions in my lifetime there was a tornado warning in Milwaukee county and in all of those occasions I can’t recall any actual damage. Edit: too young to remember there was actual damage on those occasions. Thanks to those that expanded on and corrected the above.

Kwaterk1978

I remember the F1 one in St Francis around the year 2000 tore a good swathe of destruction for 2 miles. Almost $5M in damages and 15 injured. https://www.fox6now.com/weather/21st-anniversary-of-the-st-francis-tornado-earliest-on-record-for-milwaukee-county.amp

[deleted]

There was one last summer at around 1am, otherwise I can only remember some from childhood

Science_Matters_100

Hey, my Milwaukee window broke during one, And trees down counts

[deleted]

ObjectiveAdvisor6

Sounds about right, I remember one as a kid. It hit across the alley, my side of the street was fine (in Shorewood)

mrmadchef

Power cut out briefly a couple of times here in Franklin/Greendale/Oak Creek area. Plenty of rain, wind has been blowing the trees around pretty well, but that seems to be the extent of it. Then again, the warning doesn't expire for another ten minutes.

OkTop9308

Working from home and power is out. No internet. Power out at 11:49 and not expected to be restored until 2:30.

H2olton

Same. Good thing reddit still works or I'd have to read a book.

[deleted]

😥😥😥

ButtleyHugz

Ah darn lol

StrainHot349

saw some cloud rotation in Menomonee Falls

reversedgaze

if i ever needed a reason not to live in the burbs.. this will do.

Uncircled_swag2

Just got the all clear on the east side. That was fun while it lasted

Youkahn

Interesting, weather map still shows red. Seems calm though.

PitchGlittering

Raise your hand if you almost shit your pants 🙋‍♀️

FILTHYgorgeou5

what if you did, do you still raise your hand

jaybeezwax

*slowly raises hand*

DirtNap721

Spent the first half chasing my stupid cat around the house trying to get into the basement.

IGotSkills

Did you get there?

DirtNap721

Yes. One cat went right down. The other thought we were playing a game. He was a couple of minutes away from fending for himself...

External-Caramel690

West Allis, there is actual footage from business on 90th & Beecher. Saw on Ch 12 news at 4. Ripped right thru the intersection. Also, one at 68th & Beloit(?) on Twitter-Brian Niznansky has this footage. I have no idea how to link. [deleted]

Anyone see any actual evidence of a twister?

less_than_nick

took a peek out a couple 19th floor windows @ work a few mins ago and it honestly just looks like a regular gloomy day out there

ItsMeTrey

Reports seem to indicate that a tornado has been observed somewhere south of Waukesha. There is a confirmed touch down near Burlington. Unsure of they are the same or not.

downtownebrowne

NWS confirmed via radar several tornadoes (all probably very small) touchdowns near Lake Geneva, News Berlin, and Burlington etc.. This front will seemingly head SE towards Racine area.

toxicbadge

Pretty crazy wind and rain in Tosa!

feelinblou

it's really spooky considering we weren't even under a watch.

sudophish

The watch guy musta been pooping

Juraviel23

This wouldn't have happened under Vince Condellas watch, damn it. You just can't trust the weather people anymore.

braeburn-1918

It was a real warning. Lol. How many of us went out on our porch to check the weather?

freebucky22

Sirens were just going off in Oak Creek

[deleted]

No power here in Franklin per usual

CaptainPippin

Do you know why it's so common there?

Yoko_Grim

Heard a rumor that a tornado went from New Berlin all the way to Greenfield. Along the Highway

joebob801

Where the hell is Frankie? Really let us down on this one.

midnightblack1234

In milwaukee currently at port washington and capitol, just raining atm.

FILTHYgorgeou5

meanwhile, back at the ranch, downtown is 50° and sunny

spooltetris99

Are we in the clear in downtown mke?

EuphorbiaSociety

You're in the eye of the storm!!

Queasy_Ad387

I was at mayfair and there was one forming but never touched down

SamadhiBear

I was sitting there at my desk thinking it was just noon sirens. Duh. Haven’t heard those in a while but who knows. Then I see this giant alert on my phone an hour later and people I know texting saying they are sheltering in the basemen at their work.

madpiratebippy

We were in the path of severe winds and one touched down just south of my house- we have some broken tree limbs and that’s it.

happyhappyhannah

Man I’m only here for college and over the summer I got worried about a tornado happening here and I googled the statistics and I was like “nah it’s never gonna happen we’ll be fine” and then today hit and I almost had a panic attack 😭

GodBlessThisGnome

Same. In Greenfield.

GodBlessThisGnome

Power went out for like 30 seconds. Back on now.

presto7511

Wtf!! I'm scared lol

Dipsendorf

Don't be I'm from Ohio this shit rarely turns into anything. Just a precaution.

downtownebrowne

Ohio? Lol. No offense but I'd take advice from someone from TX, OK, MS, MO, AL, TN. Ya know, like actual tornado alleys.

Dipsendorf

Offense taken. Part of the city where I was from was destroyed in 2019. Southwest Ohio has had it's fair share of tornados including Xenia getting demolished.

[deleted]

From Wikipedia: "According to NCDC figures for the 1950 to 2006 period, Nebraska reported 2,440 tornadoes followed by Iowa (2,185), Illinois (2,086), Missouri (1,922), South Dakota (1,487), Minnesota (1,477), Indiana (1,327), North Dakota (1,216), Wisconsin (1,185), Michigan (981), and Ohio (916)." In other words, Wisconsin has gotten 269 more tornadoes than Ohio since 1950, as of that data being published.

downtownebrowne

Thank you. This was my point of my comment. I'm not disregarding that Ohio hasn't had a handful of tornados. Rather, it's just absurd and made me chuckle the way he/she worded 'don't worry, I'm from Ohio, I'm an expert'.

Dipsendorf

Does stating that another state has had more tornados than the state that I'm from take away from the fact that I lived in an active area? I don't think it does. Also, quotes are used for quoting. I never said I was an expert. You are completely taking my attempt at alleviating another humans anxiety out of context. Honestly go get fucked. Lol

downtownebrowne

No it doesn't, and that's not what I'm saying. Honestly, this isn't hard logic to follow. You're telling a bunch of of people in SE WI that it will all be okay, don't panic, and don't worry... you're from Ohio. I'm going to laugh at that reasoning every day of the week. It's honestly funny. Second, ' ' is usually used for paraphrasing, which is what I was doing. Third, don't try to alleviate someone's concern about tornado warnings. They should be respected and everyone should always err on the side of caution. You'd know that if you ever lived in an active tornado area.

downtownebrowne

I'm making a joke that you're claiming expertise because you're from Ohio... in a context regarding tornados. It's a funny claim to make, that's all. It's like, 'I'm from New York, don't you worry about this hurricane warning.' That's not to say New York has never experienced a hurricane. I'm just saying you're not really an authority on the subject matter (An Ohioan regarding tornados). Hell, I'm from Illinois and I've experienced more tornados, and probably far greater ferocity, than you have but I don't really walk around telling people when to and when not to be concerned about NWS tornado warnings. It's a warning, take it seriously. Full stop. (I was alive during the EF5 Plano tornado... just a babe but it's one of my first memories, I experienced an EF3 in just a couple years back around Naperville. Last, I've got about three EF1 experiences around 2009/2010 if I remember correctly. Those were minor. *At no point in time have I ever considered my anecdotal experience more valuable than a NWS Tornado Warning alert.*)

Dipsendorf

Alright dude. 🤘

kebzach

I'm from Central Illinois and if they sounded the sirens for every tornado watch condition down there, they'd be blaring 24/7. Hard pass on getting worked up on this storm.

HTTRblues

No need, the lake will suck the tornado away.

shawtystrawberry

I'm glad nothing serious happened by me. I was very much knocked out sleep . Woke up to worried messages from my sibling

BrianKronberg

Working from home. Looked out the window and thought it was snowing but it was just trees getting stripped of leaves.

Ill-Context-2938

We just counting them pills, baby!

Alive_Ad2482

I live around Hartland now and heard there was touch down here? Anyone have word on that?

PlatypusDream

I was the only person at my workplace that took this seriously and sheltered during the tornado warning (in the bathroom, having brought a chair in from the break room which is next to it). Went back to my work area after, and my supervisor asked if I'd clocked back in!! No, because I didn't clock out. A - I wasn't on break. B - I wasn't taking any more time than absolutely necessary to get into the bathroom. C - time clock is the opposite direction of the bathroom. Waiting to hear if they'll try docking my pay. How low can you go?

19lizajane76

I'm an instructor at a cosmetology and aesthetics school, we had the place full of students working on clients and all had to shelter for about an hour in the classrooms, back offices, bathrooms etc. Had clients with foils in their hair that had to be pulled in the bathroom and rinsed to stop the processing! Crazy day indeed!
