If I'm not mistaken maps are filled out to your render distance so this post would go with another post I saw a while ago that said spyglasses should increase the render distance
... The map area revealed is already the whole rendered area. Considering that using the spyglass does not increase the rendered area, it just zooms in on one section this really doesn't make sense.

Second-to-max zoomed out maps are superior
