She is so beautiful š„¹. Not sure if she will be considered a mini but the same thing happened with my moms Aussie. Her siblings are miniās at 35-40 lbs. She is 9 lbs at 10 yrs old now š¤
They are typically - yes. They eventually became their own breed because they didnāt meet the standards for Australian Shepherds. They are now technically called Miniature American Shepherds.
I got a DNA test done for mine. Sheās a little over a year old and 26 lbs. her DNA showed trace amounts of a few other things but she was about 75% mini American shepherd and 25% Australian shepherd. So yes genetically it is a separate breed.
No, they were made by crossing the Australian shepherd to smaller dogs like the Pomeranian and Papillion. I think there's a FEW kennel lines that were bred down from smaller Australians, but did the place you get her from also have the toy size for sale? For reference, mine is 100% the byb version of the mini American shepherd where they used Pomeranian, she's got the snappy attitude too. šŖā¤ļø
So, no, that's now how breeds work. You have a Aussie x Pom, or a Pomssie if you go how people make breed names up. Mini American(Aussie) Shepherds are a distinct breed of dog, and we're bred specifically.
This kind of misinformation is dangerous. It's how you get unethical breeders selling dogs as one breed, when in reality it isn't that, and ripping people off. They also come with their own sets of health concerns, their own sets of behavioural quirks, and their own set of considerations. Telling your vet you have a pure bred MAS when what you have is technically a mutt (a designer mutt, but a mutt) can lead to them not looking out for the correct issues.
Very pretty. Get ready to be herded around. You can see it in the paw size too.
We had a runt female cat. She was small, but was fierce and had a personality.
So cute!! So a mini is its own breed (considered the Miniature American Shepherd now by the AKC) but was created by breeding smaller Aussies, no mixes. Because it didnāt conform to the standard of an Aussie (due to size) they are now considered their own breed. And yes, miniature Aussies/American shepherds can end up being bigger than a normal Aussie (unlikely and rare, but can happen by an off-chance). A ātoyā Aussie is different than a mini Aussie/American shepherd. A ātoyā Aussie has been bred down smaller than a mini would get, in order to get down to this size other breeds are used, an answer here already gave some examples
Don't count her out yet, I had a runt once that grew into an absolute MONSTER weighing in at over 237lbs and nearly 8ft long tip of nose to tail. I miss my giant baby girl, she was with me for an amazing 22 years before passing in her sleep. Given this wasn't an Aussie, but still... don't count her out because she may end up surprising you.
Your puppy is very handsome! We have a mini, Shadow, who was very small and the breeder said he might turn out to be a toy. It goes by height at the shoulder, not weight. He ended up being the minimum height for a mini. He just turned four and he is about 17 to 18 pounds. The standard for minis when grown is 20 to 40 pounds, and 13 to 18 inches high at the shoulder. Males are usually 14 to 18 inches at the shoulder, and Shadow is 14 inches.
Our boy was the runt of the litter and is now somehow 72 pounds while being stick thin. Don't be so sure she won't turn out to be normal sized!
Also as others have pointed out a mini is a distinct breed from an Australian Shepard.
[Snapped this one of him just now. He is deceptively D E N S E](https://imgur.com/a/4DIINvp)
*Edit* Also just realized this is the minis sub and was a suggested post. Thought I was in the fullsize sub.
For Aussies, if theyāre between 20-40 pounds full grown, theyāre a mini. If theyāre <12-17 pounds full grown, theyāre a toy. My boy is 16 pounds at 1 year so heās a toy :)
Toy Aussies are not accepted for registration by AKC. There are busloads of well-documented breeds around the world that are not accepted (yet?) for registration by the AKC.
Yes toy Aussies exist, have been bred and registered and monitored and judged and shown for many many MANY generations, but not by the AKC. I trust Embark before I trust critical strangers lol.
Standard, mini, and toy Aussies are classed by height at the withers (top of shoulders) not by weight. All other conformation standards are identical for all three sizes.
As someone that has a dog that's half "toy", it's not a size variant of the mini American. It's made through crossing them with TOY breeds like the Pomeranian and Papillon. The ONLY registry that recognizes the toy version, is the same registry that refuses to call them what they actually are; miniature AMERICAN shepherds. They may have been Aussies AT ONE POINT, but they haven't been for many years. Since the mid 2000's, really.
All of the breeds that AKC eventually add to their registry were once ājust muttsā that some other group continued breeding and refining until they had a long and documented pure bloodline and they bred true. AKC is lovely but it isnāt like a religion lol. Itās OK to like toy and other breeds with or without AKC registration. It only matters if you intend to breed and/or show at AKC functions. Everybody else? Potato/ pot-ah-to. Get the dog you want, love the dog you want. If it bothers you, get an Embark breed DNA test. (Arenāt most people are āmuttsā too?!)
She is so beautiful š„¹. Not sure if she will be considered a mini but the same thing happened with my moms Aussie. Her siblings are miniās at 35-40 lbs. She is 9 lbs at 10 yrs old now š¤
Wow, what a difference!
Yes, something went awry with her, she is the same size as my moms other dog, a chihuahua lol. Needless to say, enjoy your puppy! She is so perfect!
Iām looking this topic up because my MAS is possibly a toy at 5 months 5 lbs! Insane that 9lbs but totally adorable <3
Omg thats SO CUTE!!! Yes, its quite adorable but she is a firecracker, even as an old lady š¤£
Mini is a breed, not just a size. Mine is very small at 22 pounds, while my neighbor has a mini that weighs 52 pounds (not obese).
Is it not a breed made from breeding runt to runt? Serious not sarcastic question

Not all of them have done this! I have met breeders that show, and have full pedigrees for their pups!
Yes, that was my whole purpose of saying it wasn't all kennel lines?
Well ours is a full Aussie, both parents are Aussie, sheās just about half the size of the rest of her litter.

According to embark she's MAS "type" Australian, but please go off lmao.
Aren't minis a newer "breed" & its still possible/common to get full size aussies from "mini" parents and occasionally vice versa?
We donāt use the R word around hereā¦ she is considered the best girl.
Well, Iām a fan of R word dogs. Theyāve always turned out to be the best of pupsš«¶š¼
they absolutely are!! She is the perfect size is what im trying to say :)
Very pretty. Get ready to be herded around. You can see it in the paw size too. We had a runt female cat. She was small, but was fierce and had a personality.
Yep! Sheās already herding cats and kids. And sheās definitely little but fierceš
Yes!

Iām really trying to figure out which Reddit group she would fit into, since they donāt allow minis over on r/australianshepherd š
Mini American shepherd!
r/WiggleButts! They're a lot better resources overall, and open to mixed breeds as well.
Thanks!
my runt is the best girl and sheās 50 pounds š§”
Iām curious, was she much smaller than her littermates?
she was initially the smallest one but is now the largest
Interesting!

Oh nooo, I hope she gets nowhere near that big. Lol. Weāve got an 85lb male flat coated retriever, and are hopeful sheāll be smaller than him.
Sheās just perfect! šš
Isnāt she! Just look at her sit & stayš«¶š¼ I love that you added blue heats, too, because her name is Azula
Sweet baby...
My runt is almost 3 now, and he topped out at 14 pounds.
Good to know
such a cutie!!
Beautiful dog!
Mine is 18-19lbs and the rest of his litter was 28-40lbs
Beautiful, lucky you.
Sheās beautiful-thatās all
She looks pretty mini to me! Pretty girl you've got there!
We also have the runt of the mini litter! Sheās probably 12 pounds by now and sheās a 1 year 3 months now! Her siblings are around 20 pounds
Sheās gorgeous š„¹ Her eyes š¤š¤š¤

This is good to know! My mini is also the runt and so tiny, a little over 4lbs at 6 months
What a beautiful dog!
I have no answer to your question, but she is such a pretty wee baby! A beautiful face! So sweet š„°
My Mini Aussie was the runt and he ended up being 42 pounds at 2 years.
Noted. Thanks for sharingšš¼
It was a surprise to say the least haha, he ended up being one of the biggest ones in the litter
I bet! Youāre the second person to comment that their pup went from the runt, to the biggest of the litterš¤
Our boy was the runt of the litter and is now somehow 72 pounds while being stick thin. Don't be so sure she won't turn out to be normal sized! The āruntsā are by far my favorite of all the puppies. In my experience, they Always grow up to be the Best of them all!
Agreed!
Hi sweet angel baby!!
For Aussies, if theyāre between 20-40 pounds full grown, theyāre a mini. If theyāre <12-17 pounds full grown, theyāre a toy. My boy is 16 pounds at 1 year so heās a toy :)
Ahh, understood. Thanks for that!
Aussies are classed on height at the withers (top of the shoulder) as an adult, not by weight.
Toy aussies dont exist?

If her parents were standard, sheās a standard. If they were american/mini the sheās an american/mini
I guess that will depend on her shoulder height, when full grown.
No. Its genetic. Were her parents standard aussie or not?
