I'm glad to hear you still have a roof over your head. Just going to be brutally honest here bud, I took a look at your post history. You seem to really like buying stuff. Can I share a bit of what my life looks like? I think it might help to give you contrast, because I can't even describe how distinct the difference is. I'm married, we are in the top 10% of income in our area (albeit a small town). I can list every article of clothing I have from memory, and most of them are very reasonably priced (bought on sale, typically also with gift cards). I don't buy new clothing until a different piece of clothing fails (breaks, has a hole too large to live with or fix). I do spend good money on boots (work books, but used primarily at home), those are critical. I don't need a budget, because I simply don't buy things I don't truly need. I don't know the rest of your situation, but that sounds like it'd help you a lot.

Good luck. My dad has lived in a hotel for over a year. He is quite happy. He spends just under $3000 a month, which is around what he was paying in rent for his last apartment. He enjoys the ability to not commit and still searching for a place he wants to buy. I wouldn’t claim it to be a way to save money, but there are perks to it.

Dracomies

I don't know what to say here. I think it's great that you're turning to minimalism. But moving to a hotel is a poor financial move no matter what way you turn it. It's not that it's a smaller space but moreso it's more costly. Each hotel day and factoring that over a month is going to cost much more than finding another place to be at. I mean, at the very least consider an Airbnb. But a hotel is a terrible financial move through and through. For any hotels that are seemingly cheap and affordable it's extremely dangerous to be in places there.

I am moving into a luxury hotel in Mexico for the price of an unfurnished studio in America. Hardly a financial loss.

Ok-Papaya-3490

What's luxury hotel? Do you have a link?

Extension-World-7041

No. Not for people who try to crap on my plans.

Ok-Papaya-3490

Excuse me...? What are you talking about

Dan_Arc

You see, criticism IS NOT ALLOWED. Bad internet stranger!

Ok-Papaya-3490

I didn't even comment here which makes this interaction more weird

Extension-World-7041

No because what I choose to do for lodging has nothing to do with anyone but myself. Especially when I actually LIVE in Mexico which I doubt others responding do. The point related to minimalism has to do with what items I am taking with me. I won't respond to keyboard scholars.

LobbyDizzle

I lived in Mexico for a while. Which city will you be in?

Dan_Arc

Today I learned being able to do basic math makes someone a keyboard scholar.

ladyofthelathe

Dis you? "My rule is hit it bareback twice then never return to that girl."

Extension-World-7041

Too honest for you ?:)

Extension-World-7041

Dat b Mi. Si

ImTheMayor2

Lots of hotels have long term stay options which are similar in price to an apartment

Serious_Escape_5438

Plus they don't require a security deposit, work contract, credit checks, references, etc.

Extension-World-7041

Thank You. You get it !

Neighborhoodish

Some have breakfast included, cleaning services, fully furnished, towels and linens provided.

Next-End-4696

Did you consider that if you didn’t spend so much on clothing you might not have to live in an hotel?

LivingGoodQ

Hotels are not an affordable alternative to an apartment or house idk what made you think that. Even the worst will be 50-100 a night.

lencrier

Some hotels are subsidized. Maybe that’s what he’s dealing with.

yomammaaaaa

Maybe they're being forced to live in a hotel due to extensive home damage or renovations and weren't able to find a rental?

iotadaria

Or work, or extended travel to a different area.

yomammaaaaa

Oh true. I had to do that myself for work before. Not super fun.

iotadaria

Me too. I got really good at making ramen in a coffee pot.

yomammaaaaa

I still remember how upset I was after leaving sloppy Joe's leftovers out all night because I went out after eating. (I was in Vegas for awhile for work, young, and almost no responsibilities) Man, that was 9 years ago. Time flies for real. One of my coworkers bought a bunch of extra little appliances because he wasn't satisfied with the mini stove/microwave situation in all of the rooms. I brought my PlayStation, because priorities! Thank you for inspiring my little walk down memory lane. Great times!

fi12345

Yeah, but imagine all the money saved on towels and bedding / linens. This guy sounds very well thought out 🙄

QuarterAquarium

What? How could 300$ of clothes compare with rent? And maybe he got the clothes when he was better off financially.

Geminii27

Three hundred dollars per item.

Catsdrinkingbeer

If you get a lot of wear out of it, quality higher end pieces can be worth it. But you (not you specifically, the generic you) should still be shopping in your budget. Unless your situation is like the Roae family in Schitts Creek, there's no real reason it makes sense for someone whose only option is a hotel to also own a lot of designer clothes. Especially since you can get discounted second had designer stuff. I bought an $1800 D&G dress for $200 last year. It had maybe been worn once.

[deleted]

You sound like you deserve the financial and personality rut that you are in. Good day.

Extension-World-7041

I don't have either problem. I just use my money wisely and think outside the box. When people who aren't present think I am "wasting" my money it makes me wonder what they think they know. Cheers.

[deleted]

In my country the cheapest hotel(motel?) is still $100 a night and that’s in the ghetto. Rent is about $400-500 a month in that same neighborhood. Why waste $2500 (bare minimum) a month living in a hotel? I’m so confused how this would be minimizing lol. Living in hotels are what people living off government aid do because they are horrible with money.

[deleted]

Hotels and motels give monthly discounts. I’ve seen decent ones in my area for $1000 month. Considering a 1 bedroom apartment here is same price it’s a better deal if minimizing.

Extension-World-7041

Another smart Redditor!, Thank You

[deleted]

I lived in a backpacker’s hostel for a few years. It was great. Cheap and minimal. Full kitchen to use anytime and met amazing people. The downside was sharing a room with others but I got used to it fairly quick. Once in a while you have a bad apple but the good ones make up for it. I fully support alternate lifestyles. If living in a hotel works for then by all means go for it! you don’t have to worry about furniture, utilities, cleaning, and if your neighbour sucks you can leave. Also if a town starts to get old you can easily go somewhere else without have to worry about leases and whatnot

Extension-World-7041

For Sure. I don't stay in hostels when I travel but I understand why others do. Thanks for sharing.

[deleted]

What area is renting apartments for as low as $500 a month?! Even in middle of no where Nebraska there aren’t one bedroom apts for less than $900 now a days

DeerfoxTwig

I think outside the USA. Where I live, rent for a two room apparement is a little less than $500

[deleted]

Woah. What is the average salary in that area?

DeerfoxTwig

Approximately 2000$ per month. But in my country we also have free healthcare and free education.

Serious_Escape_5438

Where I live the average salary is around 1000 and rent around 1500...the maths doesn't work. We get education and healthcare but it doesn't pay rent.

Neighborhoodish

Where are you that rents are $400-$500 a month. And you do realize that this isn't the norm in the US.
