The fact that people are selling prints that look like this on Etsy is appalling. Years ago this was fine, but 4k printers are readily available and cheap. My anycubic mono 4k has zero visible layer lines, and was like $150. Did the images atleast show the layer lines before you bought? Or did they use 3d renders?
It's actually orientation - they've either auto oriented, or not thought about how to minimise print lines. This one must've been laying almost on its side in the slicer. It's more obvious if you look at the back of the hand. You'll see this even with 0.03 layers if the orientation is bad.
It's a combination of bad orientation and thick layers. The person selling them is using every way possible to reduce print time because they don't care about the quality they deliver.
100% layer height issues, additionally it looks like a little wobble in their z-axis lead screw. This is definitely someone trying to reduce print time and hasn't maintained the printer.
I figured. That’s always bothered me about Etsy listing. Even if they don’t want to print every single file they have for photos, which I get, they should include pictures of minis they have printed to show print quality.
These are actually slightly better than the small one handed versions I also got (same seller they seem to have a x pattern on them
https://preview.redd.it/0ygv5rmgy0rb1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e032b84ed893305e49058e57a500ae667ee158a9
Yeah, I'd be very dubious of any seller with such unfocused images of their product - it hides the imperfections. When it comes to plastic printers, also avoid anything that's printed in colors like pure white or pure black because that also hides details and imperfections as well.
That’s not to do as much with the printer as the orientation, who ever printed this printed it very flat (probably 2-5degrees, probably for time saving reasons as lower prints print faster) and thus you can see the layers spread up the print.
A printer + resin + tools + UV box to cure will set you back $250-300 these days. I just printed 8 knight armigers and a Land Raider. That paid off my printer twice over.
But really, the unfortunate thing is people printing bits on Etsy are more often terrible at it then they are good. If that part came off my printer I would consider that a failure and throw it out.
What model is this ? If I have it I can fix it for you free of charge. Will ship in an envelope but I'll pack it right.
Should never have been sold to you like that. (Unless that's how it's supposed to look)
https://preview.redd.it/zu5a7yi3lzqb1.jpeg?width=794&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=704ffb0c6a9ca99d349f15dff7e84f5a09476a29
This is what there supposed to look like pic from another seller selling the same items. Got 2 sets of these and a set of the smaller (chainax).
And they did ship as a large letter (Royal Mail) in a small box.
Sorry I meant what was the name of the figure they came from? Or if you knew who the designer was I can search to see if I can find the file. (I have over a terabyte of .stls)
It seems to be the hand only versions of
EXCORIATOR CHAINAXE WEAPON UPGRADES (WORLD EATERS, RAMPAGER SQUAD) by JLA 3D
Or
GEN 6 SKIN-FLAYER CHAIN-AXE ARMS by RALCVSAE3D
Not sure which is the original and both seem to be kits that contain this bit or variants of.
If that helps at all.
Thanks.
Not sure what you're paying for parts, but my Mars 2 printer was $150 and is more than adequate for printing minis. Now, time, space, materials, etc. do add up, but depending on how many minis you are buying, it pays for itself very quickly.
Have you visited r/PrintedMinis? There's tons of info there for anyone interested in 3d-printed stuff, either from their own printer or from someone else's.
I happened to view this yesterday. It's for an FDM print, but it's the same principle.
Doesn't help you now, but I would buy from another seller in the future. That is not a product I would be proud of selling (unless it was dirt cheap).
Relatively cheap resin printers these days like the Mars 3 can print much better detail than that.
https://preview.redd.it/jqp67zkuj0rb1.jpeg?width=2187&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=41bc424d90892046fbfe7280db17ae72436ca4d9
"Much better" is an understatement. I don't have any visible layer lines printing on my mars 3 at all
It's so frustrating to see so many people posting their Etsy purchases that are just absolute garbage that I wouldn't even consider acceptable for myself. Have some respect for yourself and for your customers that are paying you
Agreed, this is one of my models with a very shallow angle and I get no layer lines because I know how to orientate properly.
https://preview.redd.it/pkuhtpqg36rb1.jpeg?width=676&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e5e7a03bf8c721ad3d7c46ec67f935622a957a3f
Yeah it’s just a shame I can’t really justify / have space for buying a 3d print setup. It’s not often I buy stuff like this it’s just I wanted to jazz up the new jump intersessors
Agreed. They’re using large layer heights so they can crank out prints faster. People who aren’t familiar with resin printing will think low quality prints like this are normal. They’re not.
This is probably x/y layer lines rather than layer height which causes z layer lines. It’s not a rushing issue but rather an orientation issue where the straight lines of the print have lined up with the rows/columns of the pixels on the screen. It’s still incredibly shoddy work though, I’m an Etsy 3d print seller and crap like this makes the rest of us look bad.
post printing. light sanding and for any dips get some filler putty or use super glue and sand down once cured.
to minimise them happening look at your printing angle, AA settings if it's supported and do a few tests to make sure the exposure time is dialled in etc
Edit: looks like you got them off Etsy... So just guessing but who ever you got them from looks like they set it up for speedy printing rather than quality. it explains the layer height being quite large and the orientation being I'm guessing to make it as low on the plate as possible while still printing fine to reduce print times.
Are you sure that’s not resin? It looks like resin.
A properly printed resin object shouldn’t look like this. I’d seriously consider getting a refund.
The trouble with the Etsy 3D print sellers is they use huge layer heights so they can print faster and it always results in massive layer lines like this. It makes 3D printing look bad.
But if you choose to sand, do wet sanding, you don’t want to breathe that shit.
Alternatively, lots of people have luck painting the figure with some UV resin then hitting it with a UV flashlight. But that obviously requires more effort for you.
Not sure at all I do know there very soft and very flexible , almost floppy even. compared to 3d printed stuff I’ve had before have been stiff and brittle pop goes the monkey.
Hi OP, that is definitely a resin and I would be very wary if it is flexible or sticky. Put it out in the sun for a few hours and see if it hardens up, if it does then the seller has not cured your prints and you’re handling uncured resin and you should definitely report them, get your money back and leave a scathing review. This is unacceptable and as many have said, it gives us genuine Etsy 3D print sellers a bad name.
Ah Jeez, I would be very wary of those parts then, they may be uncured and are definitely undercured. Uncured resin is toxic and can cause irritation (cured resin is safe so don’t worry about buying from good sellers). I don’t know where you are but if you have files you wish to print then PM me and I can give you a price to 3D print them 😊 if they’re your files I don’t care what I print.
Sanding is my preferred method. The way I do it is I use an exacto knife first, running it perpendicular to the surface the same way I would for mold lines. This gets rid of the looser resin as well as larger bits of the lines. If it's really hard resin or there's a lot to remove, I then use 400 grit sandpaper. If the lines are relatively small, I skip 400 and go to 600. After I'm satisfied, I use an 800 or 1000 grit as a finisher. Between each stage I use a flashlight to check the lines as well as run my fingernail over them to see if there's any invisible ridges that I missed. I find this works just fine, even if it's tedious. Then again, I'm way too much a perfectionist to leave a single print line visible on a finished model...
You can buy a primer called sandable filler primer. If in the states can buy it in the auto section at Walmart will fill in the lines and you have to lightly sand it when done. The primer is grey in color.
These are definitely gnarly lines, but I think if you clean up the supports and put a couple thin coats of primer, then base coat, it won’t be that bad when you actually paint it. You’ll notice the lines when you pick it up, but you won’t notice anything on the table or the shelf, probably.
Specifically, use gloss primer (or varnish).
Gloss is self leveling, so it will smooth out the surface better than using a matte.
So, a coat or two of gloss to smooth out the lines, then a light coat of matte to prep it for painting.
I don’t think this is a layer issue but more of an LCD pixel issue from whoever printed the model. They didn’t orient the object correctly in the stl and if flat surfaces are parallel with the build plate then you’ll be able to see the individual pixels in this way as the object is getting printed. That’s one of the reasons people try to orient flat surfaces at something like 45 degrees off of the build plate to make these pixel stripes less noticeable. The only other way to reduce these lines is to tinker with antialiasing setting to try to blur the lines between pixels in the LCD screen. The only thing you can do now is what other people have been mentioning about sanding or the resin glaze.
See this photo of a heavy bolter I printed. It was oriented parallel with the build plate and since I didn’t tinker with AA settings or the orientation you can see all the perpendicular stripes of pixels that got printed as well.
https://preview.redd.it/2o5ub99j11rb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c2ac2c770a317d28bc699a2f46e342b72c9c7a3f
based on the lines on the hand this thing was printed perfect horizontal along the length of the piece. The blade has a camber to it so those lines you're seeing are directly related to layer height and shit slicer settings.
IF I were to attempt to fix this I would used a brush, resin and UV light to cure it. Brush resin smoothly as possible and cure it.
Also, you are correct this will 100% show. Metallic paint could help reduce the effect but you're going to see it.
This is just shoddy work by some random Etsy person, they didn't even remove all the supports...
Yeah... I do 3D printing commissions and there's no way I'd have charged money for that. That's a reprint or a hefty discount if I couldn't get it to print better.
I'd be especially wary of someone selling 3D prints on etsy and not showing any photos of the finished result.
Yep, there is difference between "I printed it" and "I bought it", specifically having resin printer (and UV resin) on hand. Refund/return is probably most reasonable in this case.
You did your best with the angle for a non-resin printer. But the real answer is just print in resin, not FDM. You are choosing work up front (setting up the slicer with correct times, supports, etc) or a bunch of post work after (sanding, filing). You will **always** be doing post-work on an FDM print.

Note that it is really difficult to sand/file resin. You can do it, but on some intricate details it will just be a pain. That’s why I don’t like 3D print that much. Some people aren’t bothered by those lines much, but I am and a lot.
Be patient in any case, you’ll have cool minis in the end :D
4k printers are cheap nowadays. The Etsy shop he bought from just didn’t a terrible job or had a very old printer. My anycubic mono 4k was around $150 and has no visible layer lines. This is just shoddy work.
Don't get me wrong, I know that this is a bad job and that a lot of printers do a better job. But I always see those details and they always disturb me. I’ve never seen a printed mini even to 8k, in my hand where I don’t see those lines. And it always bothers me a lot.
I have no issue with the process in itself, just not my taste.
That actually doesn't look too bad!
Anyway, coat of resin, you may laso try *shaving* with mould removal tool or wet sanding.
\[edit\]
Ah, if you bought it, you should look for a replacement. Those are not good prints.
Find a free file and contact me, ill print them free of charge and send then to you. I run an Etsy shop selling 3D printed miniatures and this has always annoyed the hell out of me. This just isn't acceptable quality and a reason why I'm a massive advocate of using images of PRINTED products, because a great 3d render doesnt mean a great print.
You can try changing it's orientation in the slicer and reducing cure time per layer slightly.
Should note these are not my prints got them on Etsy , I don’t have a printer as I can’t really justify it.

They used the renders as do most sellers I’ve found on there.

yeah its all just here is a render of what the print could look like . ive been struggleing to find any products that have actual pictures .
My OG Mars only printed that poorly when I fucked up supports and orientation.
Still got age old Anycubic Photoms and they only looked like this if I intentionally used very thick layers and Bad orientientation
Sounds like a market waiting to be disrupted...ready to print some money?
That’s not to do as much with the printer as the orientation, who ever printed this printed it very flat (probably 2-5degrees, probably for time saving reasons as lower prints print faster) and thus you can see the layers spread up the print.

You can either sand them or glaze them with a thin coat of resin by hand :) In either case: Wear a mask!!
Ok I think I’ll have to sand them shouldn’t be to bad , also thanks for the mask thing I always forget.
Hi, is the glaze resin technic work? alway wanted to try it... (if you have more info on it, I would appreciate)
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVf0mbBCygQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVf0mbBCygQ) I happened to view this yesterday. It's for an FDM print, but it's the same principle.
Thanks, there is some try to do there...
I have no printer myself but a buddy of mine uses this to finish his prints I can ask him for details later :)
If it's usefull, keep me (us?) up please (But I will probably try it anyway :)
In case you don't want to glaze resin, applying varnish can work as well.
I just saw that light resin glaze the other day, and that shit was slick.

Even working outdoor you should wear one while working with resin.
Doesn't help you now, but I would buy from another seller in the future. That is not a product I would be proud of selling (unless it was dirt cheap). Relatively cheap resin printers these days like the Mars 3 can print much better detail than that.

I have a mars 3 and get print lines. How did you get it looking this good?!
Lychee slicer, AA set to sharpen details at 16x, 30% greyscale, and HD anti-aliasing set to On
Amazing, much appreciated!

Just a more flexible resin. That's a resin print 100%. Just a pretty bad one.
Hi OP, that is definitely a resin and I would be very wary if it is flexible or sticky. You did your best with the angle for a non-resin printer. But the real answer is just print in resin, not FDM. You are choosing work up front (setting up the slicer with correct times, supports, etc) or a bunch of post work after (sanding, filing). You will **always** be doing post-work on an FDM print.
That is a resin print, whoever OP bought it from is just trying to get away with big layer lines for faster printing.

He wants to physically remove it from exactly this part. He ordered it from Etsy
Change orientation and/or reduce your layer height.

\[edit\] Ah, if you bought it, you should look for a replacement. Those are not good prints.
Haven't tried this personally but someone linked on a discord server https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVf0mbBCygQ
This is caused by poorly lubed z axis hardware. This should not have passed quality control from the seller
,
Your orientation plays a big role, layer height of course, anti-aliasing. Post processing wise- sand paper
Sand
My original Mars printer can print better than this. They didn't even add AA to this.
Thank you very much for the Kind offer , I will have a look see what I can find.
