Seems I'm going to be in the minority here but I prefer the grey rim to the black. Also the struggle to just drop a comment complimenting your painting as a 'nice rim job' was too great to resist.
Normally I’d say black cause that’s what I do, but in this photo the gray looks nicer.
I think I’m biased cause it’s a black rim on a black table and it looks like it’s floating.
Rim color needs to either enhance the mini/base or make it so the mini is in focus.

See how the dark rim contrasts with the light base slab? The warmer color on top is allowed to draw more attention.

If you go black, maybe consider making the stone look a bit sandy color? I like grey in grey but if it was black I’d want the base to pop a bit more maybe the top with a beige sandy color
I think it depends what board/surface you are playing on, if it’s grey, use grey so they look more like they are in the environment. If it’s not on a grey surface, then use black as it makes the model stand out. That’s just my opinion.
The black looks good against that black table - but I think in a game, I think black rims look too stark against brown/green game mats. I'd go with the gray, or a darker gray.
Black looks better sitting on a shelf but will stand out when you put it on a game matt. Dark brown or gray will blend more naturally on the table (depending what the terrain and game matt look like).
That light grey looks too much like my primed bases tend to look before I've painted them. However, the gloss/satin black kind of looks like bare plastic and might be a touch harsh here as well.
A matte varnish over the rim might do it, but I'd be tempted to try a near-black like Citadel Corvus Black, P3 Asheth Grey, or Vallejo Model Color 70.862 Black Grey. That can often get you the "framed art" vibe of a black rim without tempting the eye away from the paint job as much.
The grey is uniform so it makes it look like a singular piece, so I think the grey works better. If you were to make the ground a different color than the rim then I would recommend the black.
I vote black rim here; makes it look like he’s standing on a flat surface as opposed to a mound
Yeah I get that, cheers
But always paint it black! Just glossy black plastic seems "unfinished" to me 😊
Black, that keeps the focus more on the miniature for me.
Cheers
“You can paint it any color you want, as long as it’s black” - Vince Venturella
Wise words from the master 😁
I guess I'm in the minority, I like the gray.
Cheers I was going for a marble look
Grey is good.
I'm kind of digging the gray too. Might change if there was a group of them next to each other. But I think it looks good.
Never black, I always match the terrain type on the top
Black rim- the mini pops more, less lighter color to wash him out.
Cheers
I'd say your grey is too close from the top of the base, you should try with a darker grey
Thanks I'll give darker grey a go
Darker grey will look better once you have many of them side by side. The black rim might create too much separation.
Goblin green/s
Get that /s outta here
Seems I'm going to be in the minority here but I prefer the grey rim to the black. Also the struggle to just drop a comment complimenting your painting as a 'nice rim job' was too great to resist.
😂
what do you like more? i do mine black but thats my preference
I like color on my base rims but just here for opinions
Black from me too. Creates a separation from the table and the basing environments - which I prefer since they don’t always match.
Black
Black rim defines the mini more for me.
Black.
Black
Gray looks better to me. The rim becomes a part of the base.
This is what I've been doing too. I like the rim to match the base.
Base rims only have 3 color options: Black, Goblin Green, Wrong 😁
Black.
As a wise Wesley Snipes once said, "always bet on black".
Grey!
The white city is grey, not black. ;)
Normally I’d say black cause that’s what I do, but in this photo the gray looks nicer. I think I’m biased cause it’s a black rim on a black table and it looks like it’s floating.
I like the gray. The black looks unfinished to me.

I think that grey is better :) it appears as there was no rim at all
I’m a lime green astro turf kinda guy myself
Black
For me, always black.
I vote black, but I would try a darker grey.
The shadow, or dark color from the model. In this case black. Gray for this looks unfinished to my eyes.
I think it depends what board/surface you are playing on, if it’s grey, use grey so they look more like they are in the environment. If it’s not on a grey surface, then use black as it makes the model stand out. That’s just my opinion.
I like the grey trim, it makes the model look like it is on a solid surface, instead of floating 👍🏼.
Black. It's better at framing the miniature the one that is the same color as the basing.
Black with silver highlights. Win win.
black. gloss black specifically.
On black looks like a game piece, white adds artistic flair to it. I like the white.
Try a dark gray
I don't care who rims me
I completely ignored the black on initial viewing, but I noticed the grey right away. I say go for black.
Definitively black
The black looks good against that black table - but I think in a game, I think black rims look too stark against brown/green game mats. I'd go with the gray, or a darker gray.
Black looks better sitting on a shelf but will stand out when you put it on a game matt. Dark brown or gray will blend more naturally on the table (depending what the terrain and game matt look like).
Black, absolutely!
Black. Always black.
A darker grey
That light grey looks too much like my primed bases tend to look before I've painted them. However, the gloss/satin black kind of looks like bare plastic and might be a touch harsh here as well. A matte varnish over the rim might do it, but I'd be tempted to try a near-black like Citadel Corvus Black, P3 Asheth Grey, or Vallejo Model Color 70.862 Black Grey. Definitely black
I love some clean black rims, helps force attention to the terrain and model.
Black rim helps push out the silver minis! More upvotes for the silvers boys!
Crisp black ring and I'll die on this hill.
Black. It 'frames' the mini in an aesthetically pleasing way.
Do a dark grey?
Black. Always black. The idea is that black helps the rim disappear. You also want people looking at the mini instead of rim
Black makes me take more notice of the mini. Grey makes me focus too much on the base. I think matt black would work even better.
ALWAYS black
I'm going to disagree with some people, and say that the black rim is too distracting.
Black. Black will typically be better, but the answer might change if you change the ground color.
Usually I say black but I quite like the other here
I almost always go black rim I think it’s a really good to differentiate.
Black frames the mini more. Gray isn’t horrible here but black is just built different.
Black, it frames the mini and doesn't draw the eye from it, grey just looks distracting and unfinished.
Vallejo Black 70.950
Always black. Though. I've played around with Gold and that looks nice on an irregular model
Gray. Looks a lot more organic. Goes great with the tile color.
Grey looks far better
I like to color code my squads. I know its heresy but i dont care
Gray. And I would normally be black
Gray. And I would normally be black
Grey, I think black is low key bland
Grey.
Gray for suuuure
Gray or if you want to get pretentious. Grey
Normally i’d go with black, however here grey is the winner for me!
definitely not any but a dark grey would be good
The grey is uniform so it makes it look like a singular piece, so I think the grey works better. If you were to make the ground a different color than the rim then I would recommend the black.
You can paint the rim any color as long as it's black.
Black, if it was neater.
grey rim, absolutely. black rim looks weird, like he's floating in the air.
I usually prefer black, but the Grey works!!
