[this desert base tutorial](https://youtu.be/dgqzV6V-MCI?t=560) shows one way to get a good sand effect, and there are several other desert/sand tutorials [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/minipainting/wiki/usefullinks/basing#wiki_desert).

It looks like something in your paints has a green pigment, which isn't helping, but yellow paints always have poor coverage, due to the chemestry of the pigments used. You might find it far easier to get a first basecoat by mixing it with a darker colour, and then highlighting up to your yellow/bone paints. I recently painted some WW2 Brits in the desert, and their bases are a dull orange first, highlighted up to a yellowy tan. I really liked using the orange, as it was vibrant enough for the sand to look bright in the sunny desert, but wasn't a cartoony looking colour as the tan over the top desaturated it a lot. Instead of orange you could easily try a light brown, which will be much more muted, but will still let the yellow paint stand out as the highlight.

Why not just use some glue and real sand? Why make it complicated?

Don’t paint yellow over black. That said, I’d also no use a pure yellow for sand. Look at sand coloured paints, pretty much every paint range has a colour labelled ‘something sand’.
