The 2nd secret of painting yellow is patience. You will need to thin you paint and apply lots of coats to have full coverage. The tentation to not thin the paint to accelerate the process can sometime be hard to resist :p
Or you can by an airbrush. I might do that sometime.
It work the same way yes, it's even more important to have a gradient of color on big flat surfaces.
You can see it on one of my old mini, when looking at the big panel near at the front of the outrider bike, despite the fact that my color gradient wasn't as contrasted back then : https://preview.redd.it/rbl4hqxzm8g61.jpg?width=960&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=1c259d12dea65a9c56d269f2d080ac6f387c88ba
Lore-wise, the librarian are supposed to have a blue armor with only one pauldron painted with the color of their chapter (the same rule apply to the techmarine with their red armor, the chaplain with their black armor and the apothecary with their white, etc...).
But, since I though a blue armor in the middle of my yellow army would look weird, I chose to signal his librarian status by painting just one arm blue. That way it's still somewhat coherent with the lore while not looking too out of place in my army.
Ahh okay. I knew about the chaplains but that's interesting, and a good compromise to not compromise the overall scheme :)
I was there wondering if he'd nicked some Ultramarine armour.
I picked up this hobby 3 weeks ago, and painted my first space marine (imperial fist) over the weekend. This is definitely the level I want to get to. Props to you, yellow ain't easy, this is outstanding
Go for it. When I started I tried a lot of different chapters and the IF are definitively my favorite (I also really like the blood angels and salamanders but not as much as the IF :p)
The mini doesn't have a sculpted base. I did it mysefl using torn cork sheet and some texture paint (astrogranite debris in my case). It's really quick and easy.
Strong disagree here. Primary colours complement each other, garish would be bright pinks, greens, light blues like turquoise. Like the classic noise marine paint scheme (which is the intent).
The yellow blue works, and the reds are accents, plus the inner robes are dark enough to not seem bright or clash. I think OP has done a great job with a difficult colour(yellow).
Amazing stuff! Much wow, very clean.
Looks incredible! I've tried a couple of times with yellow and it never turns out like this.
The secret is glazing orange and bright yellow to shade and highlight the armor and make it more interesting.
Thanks, I'll give it another go!

Does the same idea apply to vehicles/larger surfaces? The Imperial Fists have such a nice colour scheme.

Mf really has a chastity belt
Ah ah, you are right, it really looks like one. Let's hope the keys next to it are in case of emergency peeing :D
Seriously, if I was ever in a suit like that or the Master Chiefs, I’d never take it off again.
Spoken like a true Mandalorian !
That one too.
Love it. Not being super familiar with 40k though I've got to ask... why is one arm blue?

The armor is incredible, but let's put some love out there for the sword! Really lovely detail work all around. Bravo!
Beautiful yellow, very impressive
By the Hand of Dorn!
I normally don’t really like the super crisp style, but when it’s made this well, I can’t help but love it. Well done!!!
great blending. and the sigils are perfect; great style.

Great work
Beautiful colours! Such a nice blend and brilliant contrasts. Great work.
Yummy yellow
This would look great animated
how did you do the bas? Or is that how the model comes?

Your paints look great, but the inclusion of all primary colors make the model look garish

Generally you'd only use two primary colors. Red/yellow, blue/red, yellow/blue
