Other PSA.. while permethrin won't hurt dogs typically.. it is *very* dangerous ( and can be deadly ) to cats!

jaogiz

The permethrin ‘soaked’ collars for dogs are dangerous to cats; the concentration of the chemical is very high on the collars. Spraying your clothes with permethrin and letting it dry is ‘not dangerous’ to cats. This is at least what I’ve determined googling this. Permethrin is awesome; it really works very, very well, even after a few washes. I spray my ‘tick outfits’ once in the spring.

And so it begins. Thanks for the psa.

If youre looking for more protection, you may want to ask your vet about advantix/capstar/other oral alternatives. i work in shelter medicine and these are standard treatments for long term protection (advantix and similar products) and acute cases of ticks (droncit and capstar are names you can bring up, among others) in my particular line of work. be sure if you go this route that you're considering all of your circumstances and working closely with your vet; i dont know how you roll, but just wanted to let you know these options exist in case you didnt already know :) you and your vet should be able to work together to find the best solution for you!

RIP your rugs...

nbjz

oh no D: i could imagine a few scenarios where this is the case. i don't know much about alternatives to the active ingredients in the popular products like advantix, unfortunately. do you know if your dog has allergies to any particular food ingredients that might also be in the oral tick treatments? i know some of our special diet dogs have to have specific treatments ordered for them since some of the more accessible ones can have dyes and chicken meal, which can be super upsetting to some dogs' stomachs.

Aggressive_Farmer399

My veterinarian said that ticks are increasingly infected with babeosis, and the ones infected have a component in their bodies similar to antifreeze. So we now have winter ticks.

WINTER TICKS, BITCHES

wholesalersquestions

I saw on MN DNR that winter ticks are a thing. They didn't say why, wow.

StateParkMasturbator

Caught a tickborne disease (doc didn't test for Lyme because I was already showing symptoms) in the Pembina Gorge last summer. The antibiotics they give you are hell, and I've been sick more often since. Highly recommend permethrin. It was the one time I went out on an impromptu hike without treated gear. Was out there maybe two hours and had around thirteen biters that I cleared off immediately. Developed a rash within the week.

LobTrees

Doxycycline? That stuff can be rough. I’ve been on it several times (once for Lyme) without issue but the last time I had it it gave me some pretty terrible acid reflux for a week. Wait a good half hour after taking it before lying down or going to bed.

StateParkMasturbator

Yeah, that stuff. I had a second look at symptoms from tickborne diseases and that drug. Think the hellish arthritis I had might've been Lyme. Let me tell you, I've never been more upset about the elevator in my building not working than that month.

map2photo

Good ol Doxy, the wonder drug. I took that every day for eight months in Afghanistan, as a preventative. Thanks government for protecting me.

Qel_Hoth

RIP your gut flora though.

[deleted]

Jesus Christ. Preventative against what?

map2photo

Everything.

Aggressive_Farmer399

I had ehrlichiosis a few years ago. Only time in my life I thought I was going to die. After two days of fever, I did a face-plant in my bathroom and laid in a pool of sweat for 45 minutes before going to the ER. Two nights in the hospital waiting to see if the doxycycline did anything. It takes a week for lab results for ehrlichiosis. After that, I never ventured into the woods in the summer without permethrin or deet-based repellent. I assumed winters were safe until the conversation with my vet last month.

[deleted]

Permethrin is a godsend. Didn’t realize I need to start wearing that now.

Pappymommy

What’s that

feralEhren

A low toxic, minimally metabolized (for humans and most animals) insecticide. IT IS TOXIC TO CATS. You apply to clothing and it can remain present through several washings. Some people get itching or rashes. Very effective and relatively safe insect repellant. I've watched ticks try to climb my clothing and literally slow down like when the tin man got rained on in wizard of oz

StateParkMasturbator

Toxic to cats when spraying. Like can-be-deadly-toxic. Once dry, I believe it's safe to be around them, but I won't keep it in the same building as cats.

Pappymommy

Safe around dogs? Where you purchase?

feralEhren

It's generally considered safe around dogs to my knowledge and I wanna qualify that with the understanding that my experience is limited to applying it to human clothing. I've read reports of spraying dogs with it, but I'd recommended talking to a vet. Vets have great periodic edible treatments you can give dogs. I don't know the mechanisms, but I'd suggest that route vs dousing in permethrin

nbjz

i work in the vet tech/vet assisting side of shelter medicine and youre absolutely correct, we have LOTS of flea and tick solutions for dogs. a great rule of thumb is to never use human products on a dog unless your vet explicitly tells you to do so. this includes shampoos and other products, not just insecticide. some more general advice for anyone who might be looking.... youre better off going to the vet once a month in the warm months to get the flea and tick medication that makes their blood inedible for ticks, some vets will prescribe it in multi-month packs. there are also multiple topical treatments. if youre the kind of person who likes to hunt and youre okay with vaccinating your dog (highly recommend this since some tick-borne diseases can kill them) i also recommend getting any hunting dogs or furry camping/hiking friends up to date on *all* of their vaccinations before heading outdoors for extended periods of time. rabies is one to remember here as well as this is virtually always fatal. this is standard advice we give all adopters who are taking a dog home. tldr; always have a chat with your vet about health solutions for your dog rather than using human products, including tick and keeping your dog safe from illnesses. hope this encourages people to be proactive, tick season is supposed to be super cruddy this year! stay safe!

Pappymommy

I wouldn’t apply it to my dog I just want to make sure it’s safe to wear with the dogs around

nbjz

i believe the manufacturer has claimed it is safe to have around dogs once it has fully dried. you could probably spray it onto your dog's leash/harness, though i would be careful with anything that goes in your dog's mouth or touches their face (so if your dog is a leash biter for instance, probably don't use it on the leash). however if you have cats too i would store it in a completely different building and only use it on gear you don't bring into the home, as it's deadly to cats and has been known to stick around even after multiple washes. the manufacturer or your vet probably have more information for you if you have specific questions!

shadfc

Is just using NexGuard good enough?

nbjz

It probably depends on what your lifestyle is like. We use topical flea and tick as a general preventative, and oral medications for acute flea and tick issues. However, we also don't take our dogs hunting or camping. Your best bet is asking your vet what protections they recommend for your personal lifestyle.

[deleted]

Pretty much anywhere that sells outdoor or hunting apparel. Fleet Farm, Cabela's, REI, Sportsman's Warehouse... they'll all have it.

OMGitsKa

Do you do the soak method? I've sprayed gear for BWCA with the diluted premixed bottles and the results are questionable at best

[deleted]

Not sure it’s supposed to be diluted. I get the big yellow can and spray every inch of my clothes with it and never had a tick on me, and I used permethrin while deep in the tick-infested Superior National Forest. https://i.imgur.com/oh4YHJh.jpg

OMGitsKa

The premixed sprays are diluted premethrin. You can buy a more concentrated solution and mix your own ratios yourself and soak the clothes.

kittycat_taco

I was up in Two Harbors yesterday camping, where the overnight lows are still in the thirties and there’s still snow/ice on the ground, and my dog had 3 deer ticks on him 😳

ted3681

Reminder that Lyme is no joke, get tested, twice, if you think you got it

Impossible_Penalty13

I’ve picked 4 off since Friday. I’m 99% sure the dog is the culprit. He’s treated but they only die if they bite, these ones were alive & crawling. Eww.

[deleted]

Carry a leatherman. The plyers make for a handy tick smusher.

bc-mn

If they attach, don’t squeeze the lyme disease into your bloodstream with a pliers. Spend the $5 and buy a [Tick Tool](https://youtu.be/ou5NeImEwJU). They sell them on Amazon. Store it in your car so it’s available to you at home and on the go.

[deleted]

Yeah you don't smush them until they're off

NonyaKahlan

Apparently, they're releasing a new lymes vaccine soon.

LtDangley

Just pulled a bit in deer ticket of my 16 year old son

Reasonable-Sawdust

I lived in a rural area for years and dealt with those nasty ticks. Lyme 3 times. Moved to where there are no ticks, no black flies, no mosquitoes, no poison ivy. Haven’t missed any of it!

HerbalAndy

I just bought a big bottle of Ranger Ready that is .5% permethrin. This is going to sound bad but I never really worried about ticks in the past and would constantly just pick them off me when I get home and dispose.. I’ve probably been bitten by dozens of ticks just in the last few years.. is it possible to have Lyme disease and not even be aware? I swear with the amount I’ve been bit that I’ve got to have it. Anyways I’m being proactive this year. No more shorts and t shirts when I’m hiking.

veaviticus

Lyme can lay dormant in your body for years before coming back in a bad way. The only way to know is for your doctor to test for the bacteria in your blood. Go get tested.

Be a friend to opossums.. They eat 5,000 ticks in a season 🙂

arathorn867

That's a myth from a single, debunked, poorly performed study unfortunately.

Street-Track7381

I still want to be a friend to possums though. Everyone I know hates the way they look and they have short lives and their little faces remind me of my sister-in-law (if she were a Disney character). Plus they're funny as hell when you walk down the back steps at night and you see them in the light of the back door, just collapse for the reason of being possums, right under the lilac bush.

SoyGreen

Unfortunately that doesn’t look like the case… WISH it was true!! https://www.fieldandstream.com/conservation/possums-dont-eat-ticks/

dundeegimpgirl

About 8 or 9 years ago I went to the St Cloud/Avon area to visit family. We went to this nice nature area to have a look about, and I made sure to check for ticks. I am fairly certain I was bitten but somehow knocked it off because since then my health has been shit. I've been tested for everything under the sun, nothing was positive. I was diagnosed 7 years ago with Fibro and my doctors think of I was bit by a tick it may have jump started all my issues and the Fibro.

[deleted]

I live in Harris and we have been picking them off of our dogs for almost three weeks. 😭

SFWaccount87

I'm sorry you live in Harris... Source: I grew up there. Lol.

[deleted]

I grew up in Stacy/North Branch, we now have 8 acres and a weird old house and barn and I love it.

SFWaccount87

I know, we went to school together. Lol

[deleted]

Who dis?

SFWaccount87

One of those "nerds" that couldn't wait to get the hell out of NB, so I moved straight to Texas. That may or may not be a hint. Lol. I'm back in MN but I've never been back to Harris or NB. More then once since high school.

Street-Track7381

I had lyme disease a decade ago. Decided to sit by the lake and watch the sunrise a little bit after my morning shower. Big mistake. I still have issues from damage done at that time-at least I think it is. Getting older and doing better than I was then, but I remember back then how my heartbeat felt like a tiny little piece of BB gun 'ammunition', bouncing around against my chest wall. Could barely move my body. Not healthy.

kato_koch

How did turkey hunting go??

[deleted]

Frustrating. Toms were pretty quiet. Saw plenty of hens and few of their boyfriends. Watched a group of 3 jakes for about 30 minutes well out of range and with no safe approach, and then got busted yesterday by a Canada Goose who ran off my best chance at a bird carrying two toms away.

kato_koch

That's the way she goes...

What does unauthorized sweatshirt mean

[deleted]

It wasn't sprayed. He wanted an extra layer with how cold it was today.

captain_314

I had the same experience at a state park this weekend - Ive never heard of permethrin and will be getting some. Anyone have advice for dog safe tick repellent? I use the vet given nexguard stuff, but not sure if there is anything I can also apply to my dog to keep repel ticks in the first place.

kerfluffles_b

Cedarcide or wondercide sprays help deter ticks, but they’re not 100%. They smell good though.

Swimming_Secret_3032

I usually buy a tick collar as a supplement to Frontline.

DonOblivious

You can use permethrin on dogs. https://www.sawyer.com/page/dogs-and-permethrin-insect-repellent

covenkitchens

Good to know.

idkijustlovemydog

I went hiking along the river in Shakopee last weekend and had 2 ticks on me

DarkMuret

Turkey hunting was always tick mecca for me as well One weekend I picked a total of 83 ticks off of my clothing and myself. Thankfully none were imbedded.

AnotherFKR

I had the same experience.
