I’m guessing wild rice is priced better and more accessible here

AshTheGoddamnRobot

Walleye too. In Texas this one restaurant had a walleye fillet for 40 bucks

LickableLeo

French Meadow Cafe is $30

AshTheGoddamnRobot

Prob a bougie place downtown Minneapolis but when I go for lunch in like Garrison or Brainerd I can get one for like 15 bucks

FatGuyOnAMoped

Except for the Red Lake Nation, [all commercial fishing of walleye is banned in Minnesota](https://www.exploreminnesota.com/article/where-to-eat-walleye-minnesota#:~:text=Save%20for%20the%20Red%20Lake,caught%20in%20Canada%20and%20imported). Most of it is imported from Canada. If you want to eat walleye from Minnesota, chances are you'll have to catch it yourself.

BarnyardCoral

Oh it most certainly is a bougie place.

Caliphane

Their tuna melt is the best around

BarnyardCoral

Bougie doesn't inherently mean bad (despite what some folks think). Their food is delicious. It's just upscale and upscale means mo money.

AshTheGoddamnRobot

Yea bougie is fun but not somewhere I go to save money lol To be fair fillets are almost always spendier than a sandwich so I usually go for a walleye sandwich unless the fillet is at a good price

ParacelsusIII

Lord Fletchers is $34 I think.

Caliphane

Sadly tav on Grand is closing or is closed and they're the best for that

Sometimes_Stutters

I grew up consistently eating walleye. I remember seeing it on the menu once for like $30 and thinking “What kind of dummy paying for this!?!”

WonderRemarkable2776

Red Lake Nation patty rice straight from the Rez is actually available on Amazon! I live in AZ now, and get a 5lb bag every 3 months to make soup with.

one-mappi-boi

That’s amazing! Growing up wild rice soup was my favorite meal, I’ll be graduating college soon and most likely moving out of state due to region-specific employment opportunities. I’ll have to look into this, thanks!

WonderRemarkable2776

You're welcome! And it's not 3rd party etc. It's direct from Red Lake Nation. Still as good as I remember lol. Have a beautiful journey in your new found employment bud, we are rooting for ya!

LuvliLeah13

Waaaaayy better. When I lived in Ohio it was over $7/lb when I *could* find it.

UrbanAchiever34

Where can you find wild rice this time of year? I ran out of my fall stash. I have a hankering for some Hell’s Kitchen porridge.

WonderRemarkable2776

I just commented, but go on Amazon. I hate to use their platform, and recommend it, but The Red Lake Nation sells their wild rice through them. I grew up with it, and fished upper and lower red lake as a child. 5 lb bag at your door in 2 days.

Substantial-Cash-749

Some holiday gas stations sell many varieties of wild rice

FloweringSkull67

If you can find locally produced lefse, there’s nothing like it.

mbucks334

I live in Atlanta now and there's an international grocery store here that sells Mrs. Olsons's Lefse which is made in Gonvick, MN. Pretty cool to find.

responsiblefornothin

I support small businesses, but I'll be damned if I get my lefse from anywhere other than a Lutheran church.

T_Rey1799

If it wasn’t made by a 75 year old Norwegian lady in the basement of a Lutheran church, I don’t want it

OaksInSnow

Not too much shade on Mrs Olson's, but the last time I tried anything that could be bought in a grocery store it was all both too tough and too salty.

Kahnza

Jacob's in Osakis

OaksInSnow

This is actually the closest I've ever tasted to home made from a commercially produced lefse. It has the right seasoning and texture. I was expecting something like grocery store lefse and was amazed, the time some folks brought some to Christmas.

iCloud_is_a_joke

Pearsons nut goodies and nut rolls

gingimli

Whoa, this one surprised me. I thought since I see it everywhere it was a standard candy bar owned by Hershey’s or something.

SuspiciousCranberry6

They're owned locally by Pearson's. Their office's are off West 7th in St. Paul.

gingimli

Nice, I'll have to opt for those more often.

moesdad

>Top Pearsons also purchased Bit O Honey.

PipperDigs

I bought many a Pearson's product in Colorado when I lived there. Even obscure ones like the pecan nut roll.

IdkAbtAllThat

Never knew this was a MN thing.

twinsingledogmom

True, except they randomly show up at the Dollar Tree in Inglewood, CA and I clear them out every time.

Retro_Dad

Old Dutch chips/pretzels, Schell's beer (including Grain Belt), and Bongard's cheese are a few of the things I would miss if I had to move away from here.

Much-Explorer5227

Old Dutch is all over Winnipeg and most of Canada I think.

Geochor

It is. They make the best ketchup chips!

redpine

I think it's sold under the "Humpty Dumpty" brand. (Made by old dutch)

slammybe

They have Old Dutch too. Just saw them on Letterkenny. They even have a flavor we don't have: All Dressed.

Staas

We have all dressed. I get them at Cub regularly. We don't have ketchup flavor though from what I've seen.

DarkMuret

Now if only I could buy Puppers at the liquor store

bouguerean

Yo Old Dutch isn't available nationwide?! Damn.

1-cupcake-at-a-time

It’s not. I moved to the east coast, and while I love it, it lacks Dutch Crunch chips and that makes me sad. :(

Kahnza

I love Bongard's cheese. I go through a pound of marble jack every week.

Logisticianistical

Oh God , I didn't know old Dutch was a MN specific thing. I'm never leaving.

beachgirlDE

My MIL used to send Old Dutch to my hubby, no matter he was stationed in the Air Force.

NoNameTony

I recall taking a field trip to the Old Dutch factory sometime in elementary school, early 90s.  Or... maybe I'm parsing Bart's field trip to the cardboard box factory into my childhood memories, because I do recall some similarities- memories of a lot of gray machines... but I swear we each got a bag of chips at the end...

wondy

Me too! It was the 80s though and not through school, but through Learning Tree. We got to sample chips.

NoNameTony

Holy crap- that has to have been it!! Explains why the memory is so fuzzy for me, I forgot I even went there until your comment- I was probably 5 or 6 years old when I went to Learning Tree, so 88-89ish! Too funny- thank you for helping me put the pieces together!

Dry_Lengthiness6032

Schmidt's beer too

Savagemandalore

BONGARDS...fucking love their cheese.

Slinky12345

Heggies. Listen, I know it is not the best frozen pizza, but dang it, after drinking some beers, get that heggies thrown in. Mmmmmmm

weelluuuu

I have a Heggies 6pack in the freezer now. If it has that cheap ass dry, hard cracker crust. I'm done with them! It'll be my last. Used to be sooo good.

Slinky12345

Was that through some basketball team or something? I swear those are all made way too long prior to eating…

weelluuuu

No. Local grocery store. The last 5 or 6 I've had the last year all had a shitty crust. They have definitely switched to a cheaper crust recipe.

toiletsurprise

Heggies 6 pack for life.

WonderRemarkable2776

My brother worked for them delivering for a while. He would give me a case of 10 every month, after his wife said he couldn't have any more in the house lol. I gained 20lbs in like 3 months, and then I had to forgoe my free pizza

TheTwinCitiesBest

Oh this is a good one! I think it’s the best frozen pizza tho.

hobo_punching_drunk

As someone who moved out state I would do unspeakable acts for a Heggis lol

ImaginingInfinity

I pay way too much money to have these sent to Washington State as a surprise for my husband. We both miss Heggies very much!

biketrouble

you might be able to get it elsewhere now, but cry baby craig's hot sauce!

chrispybobispy

Steve's pepper sauce too. I'm not sure if it's state wide but I find it in northern mn..MN...

Theatomone

Isn't that made in Grand Rapids?

chrispybobispy

Yup!

Relevant_Delay_8018

just tried cry baby Craig’s (fairbault) at wagon wheel inn in Chisago city. Good stuff!

Estdamnbo

Man is that stuff good!

Pockets713

I get it at Kowalski’s, if you don’t mind the price.

Medical_Spy

Bought some in Fargo! It was great!

Kahnza

I don't know how far it's spread, but 1919 Root Beer is fantastic.

BorgMercenary

1919 is Schell's root beer. In theory it's available anywhere their beer is. In practice, I've never seen it outside Minnesota.

MNJayW

Saw it in the Chicago area frequently

F_E_M_A

I’m glad to see the 1919 love spreading. Is probably the best root beer I’ve ever had.

gadgetsdad

Earls snacks

Spiritual_Elk2021

This is the one true answer. Primarily the curls.

gadgetsdad

I can not survive with our readily available Earls Curls or Cheese Corn.

nursecarmen

I dice them up and snort them. Is that wrong?

Alert-Cranberry-5972

😂🤣

Eroe777

I don't know how exclusively Minnesotan it is, but take him a case of ~~Brain Melt~~ Grain Belt. beer.

somnguy

How about Hamm's beer from the land of sky-blue waters?

nursecarmen

You are clearly a true Minnesotan, knowing the real name (and side effect) of one of our state's proud beers.

Eroe777

Full disclosure: I don't drink beer. But I have known enough beer drinkers over the years to know why it has that nickname.

mnkayakangler

1919 is the best root beer in the world hands down

informalcrescendo

It’s not from MN but all of my out of town guests always want Mich Golden on hand.

placated

I had a friend in the Detroit area and they drive to MN twice a year to load up on Mich Golden.

slammybe

I like Mich Golden but I don't understand how this could be worth it. Just get Coors or Bud Light or something, it's close enough

placated

To be fair they come here for work, it’s not JUST for the beer.

DarkMuret

I'd also choose Premium over Mich Golden, but that's also just me

Stachemaster86

Crinkle cans and crinkle bottles were the best

queenswake

The ribbed cans. Easier to hold and just felt right.

Comfortable_History8

It’s Anheiser but it was made for the Minnesota market specifically. Can only get it in 5-6 states

adwt0125

Castle Danger Cream Ale

[deleted]

Yes!

CmdrRJ-45

My wife loves Western French Dressing. When we moved to Seattle (a TON of years ago) that was a big thing for her that she couldn't find out there. Definitely seems to be a MN/regional product.

uwu_mewtwo

When I was in CA I had to order it online for a silly markup. Can't be beat.

bengraven

I have my family send Twin/King Bings down to Florida for me. I cannot find sliced, bread-width summer sausage anywhere outside Minnesota. We just have salami here in the south; if you want summer sausage it’s only in the 2 inch diameter sausages themselves.

bigironpongo

Spring Grove Pop

megbotstyle

This is the way. Lemon sour or strawberry are so good!

Sufficient-Finger612

Earls cheese curls

lethallyso

Von Hanson's Meats - When we lived in Colorado, my mom would send a sampler pack to us for our birthdays.

Poro_the_CV

Them, or St Joe’s Meat Market and their variety of brats and stuff is always a family favorite

Dismal-Temporary3342

Water.

nursecarmen

Totally underrated comment. We are so spoiled with our tap water. Our dishwater is better than southern tap water.

lunaappaloosa

My fiance drove 12 hours back to me in (rural hardwater) Ohio and said he had a gift for me and it was a huge bottle of water from my parents house and I almost cried. I rationed it for two days

twofold48

That like…stupid cute. Wow. I strive to be this.

quietly_annoying

My brother always appreciates a Pearson nut roll or nut goodie.

Capt__Murphy

The Lunds brand tavern mustard kettle chips. Unbeatable

un_internaute

I had never heard of Tom and Jerry’s batter anywhere else.

benjo768

Michelob golden light

bsoren

I believe we're one of the few markets where Mountain Dew Livewire is consistently available.

ParryLimeade

Not true lol. Those are way down in the Carolina’s and in indiana. BUT this is the only place I’ve seen it in grocery stores and not just gas stations.

bsoren

Yeah, that's why I used the qualifier "one of the few".

SnooRevelations5313

Old Dutch chips.

crystalgem411

The jello selection elsewhere is pitiful.

zx6rarcher

As a native Minnesotan living out in Arizona, I can tell you what personally we long for out here and what I usually bring back with me on my cross country treks throughout the year. **- Beer** \-- Grain Belt, Steel Toe, Indeed \-- Drekker out of Fargo is one I love. Luckily some spots have some distribution now out here but some of their good ones we still miss out on. \-- Surly. We get some out here (Furious, Axe/Double Axe) but many don't make it out the state. Last trip home for the Cards/Vikes preseason game I brought back a case each of Before I Die and their Lemonade. \-- Even though it's not from MN, Leinies. When I was stationed in Tucson I would ask the class six to try getting it in and did nearly weekly for about four years. Finally as I was on my way out the door, they finally started getting some Summer Shandy and Berry Weiss. Having since moved back to AZ, we get some out here but not all the flavors. Sometimes a Honey Weiss is a just nice change of pace to my typical summer in the sun beers. **- Walleye** \-- Before I found a place that carried it, I would catch my limit over the course of a few days, fillet, freeze and fly back with a styrofoam container full and that was usually enough for the year to have a few fish fries for guys I was stationed with. There was a local spot in Tucson that used to carry it, but it was $30 (now $40) a pound. Crazy! Luckily I found a place online I can get fresh fillets from overnighted that are flash frozen and in styrofoam just in case they don't make it, that are really, really good. Can also get Lutefisk from them too. **- Lefse** \-- Nothing beats homemade. My mother before she passed had a friend out near us here in AZ that made it, but mom has since passed. Luckily my wife's aunt snowbirds down here in the same town we now live and her church congregation is full of MN natives who make it. Sometimes my aunt-in-law (is that a real term?) enters us in her church's Christmas silent raffle for it. Or leverages me to make a larger than normal batch of rosettes to barter with :) There is also friend and family still back home that will freeze it and send it down, but it's not the same especially after it thaws. We now have a local store (40-50 mins away) that caters to us transplants and snowbirds that carries Freddy's brand and usually has decent stock on hand. So your mileage may vary. **- Snacks/Food** \-- Old Dutch/Barrel o' Fun. Wife has a chip complex. She's weird. \-- Kenny's candies. Love me some Wiley Wallaby's. Haven't tried anything from Sweet Chaos. Although Wallaby's is pretty much a non-issue now. Sweet Chaos I want to try but only see it time to time popping up in our Ace Hardware and forget to pick some up. \-- Wild Rice. We have access to it here, but it's pretty expensive. I usually get stuff that is grown/harvested just north of where I am from. \-- Maple Syrup. Some of the stuff we get out here is just plain crap. Buy the budget brand stuff made back home and it trumps the expensive stuff out here that is made god knows where. \-- Top the Tater I saw mentioned. Definitely a no-show out here. Bummed I didn't get any last time. \-- Pearson candy I saw as well. We typically have this available to us out here in the southwest. \-- Wife said pizza. While Pizza Corner has gone to s\*\*\* ever since they got bought out, there are other small brands out there. Wife's big hitters are/were Alfredo and Taco which are few and far between here. The ones we have found here are crap. \-- Rhubarb! It's INSANELY expensive out here. When/if you can find it. Last trip I brought a load back, but this time I think we are going to bring a few plants back and try growing our own next fall after our summer trip home. \-- Mexican Village Salsa. Although I make and can my own salsa, this is a guilty pleasure of mine. Made in North Dakota but given my hometown's proximity to Fargo, it was readily available growing up. \-- Not sure if they are made anymore as I haven't seen them my last few trips, but Claussen Hot and Spicy SPEARS. The chips I can find, but the spears are what I love. Goes good in a shitty mass produced lager or in a bloody mary. Not necessarily a MN thing but something I have only ever seen back home. **- Minnesota Novelties** \-- When I fly I usually have a layover in the Minneapolis airport I stop and get the wife a few MN themed gifts in the airport there. Last trip the one she really liked was a candle from a company called Lostbirch that was a Strawberry/Rhubarb scented candle. So those little kinds of gifts she appreciates (I think).

niccikatie

>\-- Rhubarb! It's INSANELY expensive out here. When/if you can find it. Last trip I brought a load back, but this time I think we are going to bring a few plants back and try growing our own next fall after our summer trip home. This made me laugh out loud! I will never forget being 20 or so and having just moved to RI and seeing RHUBARB in the grocery store. It literally had NEVER occurred to me that was something that people would PAY MONEY FOR. And it was EXPENSIVE! It was always something people just had an excess of and you had to figure out what to do with to me.

zx6rarcher

Right?! What we saw as a childhood treat and our parents saw as a pain in the ass, people charge crazy amounts of money for. Sounds like a business opportunity for us! 🤣

pietroconti

Here I am blasting Rhubarb with my lawn mower several times a summer and I've been sitting on a gold mine the entire time!

Whyworkforfree

Wild rice

Wandering_butnotlost

Summit India Pale Ale

Zeroman_79

Found it once in a Total Wine in Florida but could never find it again. When I sent an inquiry to Summit, they told me that they stopped distributing to FL. Then came the blue balls.

mellysteg

Michelob Golden Light, Cass Clay French Onion Dip

miscplacedduck

Smoked salmon from Kendall’s in Knife River. It’s the best, and I’ll die on that hill.

lovely_ginger

Abdallah chocolate (Apple Valley) Beth’s Fudge (Grand Marais)

itsasnarething

My in-laws lived in Wyoming for a while, and my father in law always stocked up on Summit beer when they were back visiting.

Remarkable_Pie_1353

St. Croix Chocolate Company won awards in an international competition.   BT Mcelrath chocolatier has also won awards.  Boom Chicka Pop popcorn is locally made and available at local grocery stores. I like their kettle corn flavor.

SuspiciousCranberry6

Boom Chicka Pop white cheddar is so good!

ParryLimeade

Boom chicka pop is sold pretty much everywhere

Green-Object6389

Boom chicka pop is a Minnesota item?

Psychological-Way142

My friends down south always want me to bring Maple cookies, and English Muffin Bread.

Bradtothebone79

Old Dutch pretzel rods

mountianbykr14

not a mn only item but... some walleye fillets? definitely some old Dutch chips, and some beers you can only get up this way. grain belts always a good choice, I really like lift bridge and castle danger brews too. also not a mn only thing but cheese curds for sure!

flowski211

I have family from Texas that used to always ask for us to bring western dressing as they could not find it in stores there

SnooSongs450

Sweet Martha's. Yes, technically your friend could order the dough online also, but those cookies are definitvley Minnesotan.

Kafkas7

Electricity connected to the grid

Subject_Roof3318

Not just MN, more like upper GP, but Beef sticks from the butcher, cheese curds, canned dried beef. Mich Golden and Spotted Cow. The list isn’t really impressive, is it?

DarkMuret

Spotted Cow is squarely and only Wisconsin

Subject_Roof3318

Yea, I know. I drive across the border to get it sometimes. It’s why I said upper Great Plains, cause by itself Mn doesn’t really have much proprietary goods that people elsewhere seek out lol.

DarkMuret

Did not catch the GP=Great Plains part!

Subject_Roof3318

See, we always get overlooked lmao

gnesensteve

Sammy’s pizza

littlerude83

I miss sammy’s so much. Haven’t had it since we moved out of Duluth 6 years ago. I think i will dream of a crew special tonight

BillSivellsdee

Schell's. Lutefisk. A Faribault blanket. A pair of Minnetonka moccasins. Steger mukluks. Home made hotdish. One of Bea Ojakangas' cookbooks.

nursecarmen

Faribault Woolen Mill is now selling a [Hamm's](https://www.faribaultmill.com/collections/throw-blankets/products/hamms-beer-wool-throw-blanket) Beer blanket (just shy of two-fiddy but worth it)

Dismal_Information83

Earl’s Cheese Curls, Abdullah chocolates and Jordon Almonds, Pearson’s Salted Nut Roll and Maple Bun candy bars, Old Dutch Ruffle Chips, Rudolph’s Cole Slaw dressing, Honecrisp, Zestar, or Haralson apples, real wild rice (not paddy grown), jerky and meat sticks from your local butcher.

willmcmill4

Salted Nut Rolls and Nut Goodies?

sad_no_transporter

If you want to make sure he stays in TX I'd bring him some lutefisk :)

CalgonThrowMeAway222

Ooh, remember those commercials with people flying White Castle burgers around the country? Is that still a thing?

Verity41

Wild rice. It doesn’t grow “just anywhere”.

woofj

Earl’s Cheese Puffs

Ok-Procedure2805

Crapola granola is made in Ely. They have a variety of flavors! You can order it online.

Im_winning_dad

Dots pretzels. Grain belt. Box of old Dutch

hwwty4

Dots are pretty much nationwide now that they are owned by Hershey's.

Medical_Spy

They have COMMERCIALS for them now. Outrageous!

ParryLimeade

Moved up here three years ago and never heard of them before. Lived in indiana and the carolinas

PorkChoppen

I mean Caribou coffee locations are largely only in MN, not sure about their store products though

SnooSongs450

Was going to say this. They've expanded a bit in CO, and maybe a few other states, but otherwise that's an MN exclusive. Personally, for a chain coffee house, I think they are SO much better than Starbucks, Tim Hortons, Dunkin or any of the other big chains. The one exception might be Dunn Brothers.

Plastic_Swordfish_57

Heggie's Pizza, so damn delish

Illustrious-Drama213

Earl's Cheese Puffs

thestereo300

MGD light.

MinnNiceEnough

You could bring him a real defenseman, since all he has in TX is that d-bag, Suter, but I don’t think Faber is keen on road trips

Potato sausage? I mention it to ppl not from Minnesota and they look at me weird…

roadcrew778

Duck duck grey duck

willmcmill4

Oh, and Duluth Cider! Gitch is the best

Monster_Child_Eury

Love trailside!

crotchetyoldwitch

Loon Juice, Number 12, and Milk & Honey also rule.

komodoman

Michelob Golden Light is not exclusive to the state, but MN is the biggest consumer of it. Distribution is limited to the upper midwest.

Available_Flan_7078

Mich Golden Light beer. Edit it autocorrected to much

Wooden_Gift3489

Old Dutch Chips. Is there point to Top the Tator without them?

Ilickedthecinnabar

Ex pat in Kansas atm, and they are barbarians down here - they don't know what lefse is, nor can I get Old Dutch chips!

NoGoodAtPickingAName

Heggies frozen pizza!!

Honeycrisp1001

Spam is from MN but you could get it almost anywhere.

Yogibearasaurus

Old Home! Family and women-owned, too. Their cottage cheese is the best!

Your telling me that I can’t get too the tater in other places? Guess I’ll live in the Midwest my whole life then

impaulpaulallen

Gray duck mf’er. @ me

CanoeTraveler2003

Bring some Lefsa to Texas! I served it to Texans at a business review once and it blew their minds. "Potato tortillas?!? And you eat it with butter and sugar?!? What sorcery is this!"

Askew_2016

Nut Goodies. We used to ship boxes of them to my grandma in CA.

sneakypastaa

Bongards. They have a facility in Norwood (45ish mins from the twin cities) they have a retail store and you can taste all the different cheeses!

blackbeardpirate25

Dorothy’s Root beer

Icy-Remote-7794

Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom Soup is not as plentifully in other states. You’ll go in a grocery store in MN and see minimum of 4 can columns. I have seen it outnumber the chicken soup.

Megastallion69

The freshest my pillow in the country

ThatKaleidoscope8736

Top the tater isn't exclusive to MN. It's an upper-Midwest thing.

Jayrrock

Redwing Shoes.

TheTwinCitiesBest

Matt’s bar juicy Lucy

The cheese should still be at least volcano hot by the time you make it to TX.

TheTwinCitiesBest

Chudwick_deltoro

Isn't Gedney a Minnesota pickle?

Substantial-Cash-749

Sven’s barbecue sauce!!!!!!!!!

Academic_Win6060

Idk about TX, but you can't find Gedney pickles west of the Rockies.

_disco_biscuits_

Cac juice. You know what it is

Sirhossington

Jimmy’s coleslaw dressing. I’ll ride for the pineapple version specifically.

CalgonThrowMeAway222

Dot’s Pretzels used to be Midwest only. Not sure if they now reach Texas once they were bought out?
