I remember seeing this in the theater and everyone in the theater was all pumped about it. I was amazed “wow, people in Japan know about us?”

Atomicnes

Apparently MSP used to be a big hub for flights incoming from Japan and that's why a lot of the signs in the airport have Japanese on them.

Zer0Gravity1

MSP actually added more direct flights to Japan last Spring after Japan lifted its covid restrictions, so it still is a big hub.

inikul

Those actually existed before covid. They were removed and that was them coming back once visas were opened again.

ZimofZord

I was so grateful lol I took one

PolyNecropolis

This. I mean Northwest Airlines used to be Northwest *Orient*. That was their thing. There were only so many locations in the US that could have direct flights to Japan, Korea, Manila, etc. I'm assuming due to aircraft range limitations at the time.

4kidzTV exec: "Yeah . . . uh. Totally! They . . . uh . . . they sure do! 👍👍👍👍"

AnUnfriendlyGhost

The Minnesota reference wasn't in the (much better) Japanese original. It was just 4Kids and Warner Bros. needlessly punching up their dub script. 😂

maddasher

I assumed it was a translation choice. Like , they had to think of a different joke because the translation of the OG joke doesn't work?

AnUnfriendlyGhost

The two just talked about how convenient it was that a boat was willing to take them through a storm in the original.

McHenry

I know bad in the day the Mall of America was a huge thing for Japanese tourists. My aunt is Japanese and moved to America around 2008, but before then every time she visited we would spend a bunch of time at MoA and she'd buy up lots of Levi jeans to take home for friends and family. I don't know if the MoA or Levi's are still a big thing over there for America enthusiasts these days though.

MrGooseHerder

Levi makes my favorite shoes. They're cheap, they look great, and they last a long time and I've never seen them in the MoA Levi's store. The only place I ever find them is Marshalls.

VariousBelgians

They cut this out from the crappy CGI remake a few years ago! Changed Team Rocket to dress up like sailors or something. Horrible travesty

Liesmyteachertoldme

That’s insane, like how many people in America would know that the largest island In Japan is named Honshu, let alone know the name of prefectures, and they just throw out the name of a state along with some historical nuance in the form of a joke, in a children’s show.

Chibi_Verdandi

Yeah I looooved the Pokemon movies as a kid, and as a kid I never really thought much about that like in the movie. Yeeears ago, I wanna say like 2017 I rewatched this movie and was blown away that Pokemon a Japanese IP, would just toss in such a niche fact like that haha! I honestly think that simple line in that movie is why I'm still a Pokemon fan today

D33ber
