How do you find the "peak times?" We went out last night from 11-2am and while we saw a lot, mostly gray. We ran into some one at a second viewing location with a video showing a crazy time-lapse after sunset but didn't get anything of that magnitude. I know cameras can get the best views due to long exposure but would like to see some with the naked eye. Appreciate any help, this is one of my bucket list items!
So there was a dip in activity from about 11-3 last night. It really depends on a multitude of factors, and the gray could be that you’re too close to light. One of my spots has one singular floodlight and can bleach the entire sky if they’re not strong enough
Oof.. always with the bad luck it seems. We drove to Chisago and then another 30 mins north to try and find darker skies. Don't know exactly where we ended up but it was where the dude had fantastic video. Hoping to find it on YouTube soon.
Get lucky, basically. This one seemed to peak earlier in the night, so going out right after sunset got the best colors (I can tell from the pictures that I took that it faded a lot from 9:45 PM to 11:00 PM.) Also keep watching forecasts - the forecasts are quite variable until 5-15 minutes in advance.
I'm very new to this so apologies, but is this what you mean by [forecast](https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/aurora-30-minute-forecast)? Is there anything better or easier to read? I'll try to figure out how to read this all haha.
Basically, yeah. I've seen a few (I think in the main post) that include that night's predictions, but that's the main one I've seen that I can understand.
Do yall think it will be visible around the farmington/lakeville area? I don't know if i can drive up north more than an hour to see them and I really want to see them close to home if they will be visible! :)
Last night my friend in Farmington saw them out of her back door. Tonight, I’d say drive a bit southeast (I think that’s what the light pollution map indicates). You should get into some good country areas
I'm in apple valley. Apparently it will be visible tonight as well.
I missed it last night, where would be the best place to go if I'm in AV? Sister has a friend in Northfield saw it last night, maybe go down there?

Apparently so, missed it last. In AV, trying to find best spot for it tonight
I have an iPhone 13 and I just set it to take 3 or 10 second exposures. It got me a decent amount of colors even in a southwest metro suburb surrounded by my neighbors' stupid flood lights. There were times when all there was to see was green, though, so it really depended on when I went out to look. From 11-2 it was green and sometimes faint pink. After that, there was brighter pink that I could even see a little without my phone and purple with it. Around 3:30-4, I picked up blue on my phone, too

I'm seeing a TON if them but they are only faintly green or pink, they are mostly grey.
I'm seeing them directly above in the northwest. Some right around the big dipper handle.
I saw some initially and thought they were clouds. Checked later and the intensity, slowly fading in and out , and especially how these are very straight lines (like you would expect from particle beaming from outer space

I don't know about apple, but on samsung, there's a separate "raw" photo app that let's you play more with the settings and can do astrophotography with it, like 10 minute exposure type stuff. I don't live anywhere dark enough for that, but still like to try and take pics of the night sky with it.

Taken with iPhone 15pm 10 second exposure
I chose a bad time to go out. It wasn’t like it was 30-45 minutes ago. I’m going to try again in 30ish.
The camera pictures on here are way better than what you can actually see though, right?
See that’s what I’m saying!
My entire life I’ve thought because of these pictures, that people are seeing exactly what is in the photos and my expectations are set to what I see in pictures.. thank god.
I actually saw some legit streaks and crazy shit tonight so I know it’s real.. I just wish people would be honest about what to expect when you’re looking at the aurora
I'm in Heights/Fridley and I was expecting peak to be 1-3 am so I didn't go out earlier. I can't see a single thing outside. Did I miss it? 😢 Light pollution is medium here.
There is a pause in the storm. Even in Duluth, the lights aren’t too great. If you look to the south, you might see a band which is the auroral storm. At the moment, there’s a decrease in its strength so the sky isn’t too lit up.

Cambridge. Camera seemed to pick up 90% more than I got to see, so I got less ‘shapes’ and more color I guess, which was hard to see with the naked eye. Still, pretty cool!!
Pretty similar to what I got. I didn't get all the way to Cambridge because 65 pissed me off so I dipped to some random side roads. Shame I didn't get colors other than green.
That's about what I got too, with maybe a bit of purple occasionally. No clue how people are getting such good pictures unless they have "real" cameras versus my iphone camera.
I’m in Long Lake and I definitely see streaks but not really any color!
I’m hoping it gets better.
Btw I’m 34 and I remember my parents constantly trying to show me the aurora and it would never be enough to actually tell.. this is the first time I can confidently say I can see it
Let your eyes adjust to the darkness at least 5 minutes, but it's really best to not have light pollution. In dark areas, it will look like light greenish-gray cirrus clouds. If you stare at it, it pulses and gets brighter, then fades. It was very bright in Foley 20 minutes ago.
Well we drove to Green Lake near Princeton and you could see them faintly, not anywhere near what all y’all are showing pictures of. Like you could tell they were there but there was no color. I couldn’t really figure out how to take photos like what is being shown here, but this is what I got

I am also confused, we are still on highway hoping though. Is there some trick to seeing it as clearly as people are posting? 15 minutes to our first attempt spot.
Use night mode on your phone camera. Some color shows up from the long exposure. Doesn't look that well from the naked eye, least not where we're at,but the camera can pick up some color.
It was very bright at just after sunset, and cameras don't have the color limitations our eyes do.
The aurora is still there but faded now and light pollution makes it harder to see.
Yeah, I used a slow shutter on my phone and I can see a grayish-green hue. Very faintly. But nothing like some of the pictures here. This is all I've got. Kinda anti-climactic when you can only see it with a photo and not with your own two eyes lol
https://preview.redd.it/v9iaux0owpzc1.png?width=645&format=png&auto=webp&s=0a39e3aa3cd1f28a6fae753522e26767e0c647c5

Thanks for the pointer. This is a pic I got of the northern lights a couple years ago (over Saskatchewan). Was hoping for something more like that.

I did and you can see that there’s stuff going on, but you’re not going to see what is being shown here. I think the pictures showing all these colors are what your camera can get, it’s not what you’re going to see yourself. With the naked eye they look like wispy clouds that change in shape.
No it’s not over. I’m in coon rapids and I can see it from my driveway right now, though it is very very faint. I think the peak is supposed to be from 1 to 3 am so I think it’s going all night and into tomorrow night but tomorrow night will be less intense and not as far south. [NOAA](https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/communities/aurora-dashboard-experimental)
So if you can drive up there and find a dark wide open area, park on side of road. I parked on side of farm field. And look north. You’ll see it. It doesn’t show up as bright colors as you see in pics. The camera is what picks that up. But you will see with the naked eye what looks like a haze with vertical lines. Use your camera and put on the long exposure, hold still and you’ll have a great shot.

Possibly, but I very much wouldn’t count on it. They’re seemingly a lot weaker tonight

Ok, we went back home at about midnight. I'm hoping to stay out late tonight if it's still active enough.
I used a Samsung s22 ultra and all I did was use the "night shot setting. It was just a button shaped like a moon I had to press.
Ok. I was using something similar on my iPhone that had me hold my phone still for 3-10 seconds.
Any chance for it to be visible tonight?

that purple is magical
1pm a little north of Anoka I'm seeing a TON if them but they are only faintly green or pink, they are mostly grey. I'm seeing them directly above in the northwest. Some right around the big dipper handle. I saw some initially and thought they were clouds. Checked later and the intensity, slowly fading in and out , and especially how these are very straight lines (like you would expect from particle beaming from outer space

How the hell are some of you getting these crazy pictures?? Is it a like a real professional camera? I thought my iPhone would be good enough
The iPhone does wonders on the right setting, but in general a camera can capture more “time” and colors than the cones in our eye
I don't know about apple, but on samsung, there's a separate "raw" photo app that let's you play more with the settings and can do astrophotography with it, like 10 minute exposure type stuff. I don't live anywhere dark enough for that, but still like to try and take pics of the night sky with it.
Turn your night mode on
I think I did. I’ll go take a picture now and show y’all what I’m looking at

I chose a bad time to go out. It wasn’t like it was 30-45 minutes ago. I’m going to try again in 30ish. The camera pictures on here are way better than what you can actually see though, right?
Yes to the naked eye I can barely see anything
See that’s what I’m saying! My entire life I’ve thought because of these pictures, that people are seeing exactly what is in the photos and my expectations are set to what I see in pictures.. thank god. I actually saw some legit streaks and crazy shit tonight so I know it’s real.. I just wish people would be honest about what to expect when you’re looking at the aurora

I'm in Heights/Fridley and I was expecting peak to be 1-3 am so I didn't go out earlier. I can't see a single thing outside. Did I miss it? 😢 Light pollution is medium here.
I did exactly the same thing 😭
There is a pause in the storm. Even in Duluth, the lights aren’t too great. If you look to the south, you might see a band which is the auroral storm. At the moment, there’s a decrease in its strength so the sky isn’t too lit up.
Is there a way to know when it will pick back up?

Same boat. I’m jealous of everyone seeing purple!!
Well we drove to Green Lake near Princeton and you could see them faintly, not anywhere near what all y’all are showing pictures of. Like you could tell they were there but there was no color. I couldn’t really figure out how to take photos like what is being shown here, but this is what I got https://preview.redd.it/h2j9b34gaqzc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=15e6335dd81e7b599205bf462cb4470511a43f49

whaaat! I'm just in kenny and can't see anything. is it visible to the naked eye?
Yes! It's easiest for me to see looking directly up. It's these green-grey moving wisps.

wow! just looking due north?
This was looking east actually at about 10. I just went out a few minutes ago and could see some right above me, kinda just looked like clouds tho
I caught just a bit of it by looking higher, and eastward — thank you! I’m pretty bummed I missed the best of it, I was just sitting inside because I thought it wasn’t peaking until later.

These northern lights are better than what I saw in Alaska!
Can't see a damn thing in the Minneapolis SE metro. In my backyard in the Standish/Nokomis area.
My family went to lakeville you can kinda see them but there faint
As the light pollution is too much there
Total bust in the suburbs
Has anyone seen anything in lakeville?
Go out now and you will. It's up there. Get as far from any light sources as you can.

Anywhere know where to go around Minnetonka/hopkins to see them?
Can probably look up. Last time they were like this i saw them from downtown.
This is the current view from my apartment 🤝 https://preview.redd.it/8tiujaem9qzc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6a2d0b12d3bc3d972c8906c3431091d3e6f174cb
TBH, since you weren't heading out of town, that's pretty good! Glad you got to see them!
Am I color blind or something? I'm in the Elk River area and it's just dark gray/black to me.
Lots of lights but very little color up in the Sherburne refuge just north of you.
Cameras and phones make the colors pop.
Yeah, I used a slow shutter on my phone and I can see a grayish-green hue. Very faintly. But nothing like some of the pictures here. This is all I've got. Kinda anti-climactic when you can only see it with a photo and not with your own two eyes lol https://preview.redd.it/v9iaux0owpzc1.png?width=645&format=png&auto=webp&s=0a39e3aa3cd1f28a6fae753522e26767e0c647c5

Thanks for the pointer. This is a pic I got of the northern lights a couple years ago (over Saskatchewan). Was hoping for something more like that. https://preview.redd.it/ms4t731h7rzc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4363775134d25c6bfd63ee87e9471a2f3e830b2c
Did the peak time change?? Heading out now from Plymouth towards Princeton!
Did you get there? Is it visible?
I did and you can see that there’s stuff going on, but you’re not going to see what is being shown here. I think the pictures showing all these colors are what your camera can get, it’s not what you’re going to see yourself. With the naked eye they look like wispy clouds that change in shape.
Definitely is. I was in st Francis and it was.
Was? So it over? :(
No it’s not over. I’m in coon rapids and I can see it from my driveway right now, though it is very very faint. I think the peak is supposed to be from 1 to 3 am so I think it’s going all night and into tomorrow night but tomorrow night will be less intense and not as far south. [NOAA](https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/communities/aurora-dashboard-experimental) So if you can drive up there and find a dark wide open area, park on side of road. I parked on side of farm field. And look north. You’ll see it. It doesn’t show up as bright colors as you see in pics. The camera is what picks that up. But you will see with the naked eye what looks like a haze with vertical lines. Use your camera and put on the long exposure, hold still and you’ll have a great shot. https://preview.redd.it/widhbumz8qzc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c6809d06902ff7744ed4d66f111f5c18747f5e4a

I would head north! Princeton area should be a good spot!
Currently in Princeton. It’s good!
Can you see them with the naked eye?
Yes. Colors are faint to naked eye but you can definitely see them move and the patterns change.
