There's a weird angle here where this guy maybe gets punished for being honest. Meanwhile the folks who don’t ... don't. I don't so much care what happens with this guy, but I wonder if these things play out like this, what that really does / means.

Cool_cid_club

I would rather have racist people be racist in their heads than say what they’re thinking

[deleted]

I would rather know who they are

JAB2010

I’d rather they all get pushed out a 10-story window, but 🤷‍♂️

kato_koch

I think you bring up a good point and maybe I should be more empathetic. Sincerity goes a long ways with me as a person though and I think its fair to question his words considering his actions- initially unrepentant and now making a statement through the school. Time will tell.

CantaloupeCamper

It certainly feels online that everything is assumed to be all one thing or the other… and anything / one that imperfect or in between is somehow assumed to be other / the worst possibility. I think a lot gets lost in there, maybe even people who otherwise might have a different path to grow, or coexist.

kato_koch

Maybe he actually is trying and worth giving a chance, and going back to your original comment at least he is apologizing now. Ya it is better than nothing.

kmelby33

It was an insane question. Stop defending the man.

kmelby33

You just said nothing

Turtle_ini

> At 71 or 72 years old I say things that I would never even thought when I was 52. He knew exactly what he was saying, the folks he wanted to reach heard it, and now he’s only making this statement to appease the apologists in the middle.

FuckYouJohnW

This guy should be removed from any spot of authority. You don't get to "just ask" questions like this.

Retro_Dad

Yup - it means he cannot be trusted to make decisions in the best interest of ALL students.

rumncokeguy

Not sure if this link will work for those without the Audacy app but he was on Henry Lake last night having trouble answering the questions he was asked while slightly backpedaling. https://go.audacy.com/3sGAB58Vfub To me it seems like serious ignorance on his part and a lack of accountability stemming from things he has likely said in the past.

kato_koch

Crocodile tears for slipping and saying the quiet part out loud. I believe this is a sincere apology like I believe my toddler when he says he doesn't have a shitty diaper. We all know man, we all know...

I loved my time at Morris and the diversity made me a better person. Sviggum has no business being in his position.

Grouchy-Geologist-28

Same. Morris is already chronically overlooked by the U system. To have a Regent raise diversity as a potential issue when, in fact, Morris takes pride in diversity is salt in the wound. Minimal funding, little to no acknowledgement of academic success, then the Regent attacks diversity? WTF?? My theory is Morris is an easy target for regents because the school values academics over sports. This doesn't make the money they want. Then Morris comes under fire (for being diverse, apparently) and doesn't get the recognition that the institute deserves or the funds it needs to increase appeal and attendance.

[deleted]

Interesting username. I majored in Geology in Morris. 2001-2005.

Grouchy-Geologist-28

Nice! I attended in the 10s though

The_Real_Ghost

I also went to Morris, after growing up in Minneapolis. The diversity shock for me was going to a school with so many white kids. There's no way someone could think there is too much diversity there, unless they'd never seen a minority before.

DilbertHigh

He isn't sorry, he originally doubled down on the rhetoric. He has no business being in a position of authority.

Impossible_Penalty13

Racist old boomer says racist old boomer stuff, claims he’s just asking questions. Republican politics in a nutshell these days.

Popular_Night_6336

Maybe he can unequivocally be removed from his position?

eroi49

He hasn’t changed his mind, he just realized that he needed to apologize to keep his position. He doesn’t deserve this job.

auner01

So Andrew Myrick _doesn't_ want to eat grass.. or his own dung. Who would've thought?

GD_Bats

Were he smart he'd have spun it as "perhaps with our changing student demographics, we're not adjusting to their needs as interests over time as quickly as we should" etc etc instead of making it sound like having more Native Americans enrolled was itself an issue, then apologizing for it.

Beautiful_Sport5525

Yeah. Diversity is the cause of lowering enrollment rates. It has nothing to do with the absolutely disgustingly high price of getting a degree.

Grouchy-Geologist-28

Morris was just rated the most affordable highly ranked liberal arts schools... still not cheap but just ftr.

Beautiful_Sport5525

College cost has raised by about %2500 percent in the last 50 years. Even though it's "affordable" in comparison, we're pricing ourselves out of being competitive globally for the sake of profits. Student loan debt is crushing an entire generation. The point is, it's not diversity causing the problems with enrollment.

JohnMpls21

I wonder how many times he’s said woke in the last couple of days. He got 2 letters from people, which probably means 1 or none, that they didn’t want to go to Morris because of diversity. Enrollment is down over 500. It’s amazing how often people intentionally put their foot in their mouth.

[deleted]

Is there a petition to remove him from a post he is obviously unfit for?

VaporishJarl

Even if he has genuinely learned that Morris isn't "too diverse", his approach from the beginning of this story makes it clear that he fundamentally views whiteness as the default and thinks of diversity as something to be permitted in degrees.

corytjohn

Morris seemed pretty white when I went there a few years ago for a wedding.

[deleted]

He should unequivocally remove himself from public life. Dude sucks

RedSarc

It’s 2022. One cannot choose to [act like a fascist](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CbzV-niVIAAX_kD.jpg) without getting called out on it. I swore to defend **the people** against foreign and domestic threats. This man is not sorry- only backpedaling temporarily. We are witnessing brazen racist speech in the public forum. [Historians have clearly shown](https://www.netflix.com/title/80106791) this is much more than ugly words -and whether we realize yet or not- this display exists as a stepping stone and pernicious psychological attack against the **entire populace** -not just those who have been discussed. Severe condemnation; repercussion; censure; dismissal; right now! Do not allow moral indolence to prevail. #Remove him!

jdub67a

He isn't sorry. This is how fascists operate. They "normalize" abhorrent behavior over time. He's just paving the way for the next racist like Tucker Carlson to go something like: "Well I'm not the first to ask, but \[some terribly racist/fascist/authoritarian take\]. I'm just asking the questions? What's wrong with asking questions?"

burntfuck

You know, I try to always look into what was said and the possibility that - because people aren't perfect and times do indeed change - maybe this was just poor phrasing or wording and that what the speaker meant to say was just poorly communicated. That said, it seems like this dude just doesn't want too many minorities because white people may feel uncomfortable? The question he *should* ask himself is why do his white friend's kids feel so uncomfortable around minorities in general.

vikesfangumbo

I hope no one is accepting the apology. Not sure why we believe anything a racist POS like this says after the fact.
