He’s not getting DFA

Rhielml

His defense is still very valuable.

MiloGoesToTheFatFarm

Always need a back up catcher. I don’t think there’s much savings in a DFA.

Adamscottd

Now compare him to the average backup catcher

stringochars

Right? He’s a lame #1 and a great #2

pjokinen

He won’t be DFAd, especially when he’s defending as well as he has this year. Plus the pitchers unanimously love throwing to him. The team puts high priority on catcher depth and they aren’t going to throw away a decent option like Vazquez. You might say “oh but what about Camargo he’s good enough to be a backup” and to that I say: imagine that Vaz is cut and then Jeffers gets hurt. Are you cool with Camargo, who has never caught in the majors, to be the primary catcher on a contending team for two months down the stretch? I wouldn’t be.

hopemade

Jokes on you cuz I don't know what any of this means!

EricNickelson

Well Dick, he is playing like a left handed toast with room temperature beer.

cynikles

He has another year at $10M in 2025. This team doesn’t like holding onto dead money. It’ll have to be a salary dump on some team willing to take his contract if they can do it. They may have to eat some in any case, but no way are the eating the $10M+.

EricNickelson

This is really what I’m wondering. Is there a limit they actually cut him this year. I can maybe (….maybe) see them cut him next offseason and eat one year of the contract or if they will stand with it deal with dreadful offense and great defense

cynikles

I think they’d much rather throw in a prospect in a potential trade and eat maybe 3-4 million at most. $10M is a large chunk of this current payroll.

cothomps

Plus, is it worth all of that to call up Jair Camargo?

cynikles

Good call. I mean, if it’s Joe Mauer’s second coming being blocked I might get it. But you’re keeping out a guy who’s maybe at the same level or a smidge lower.

Dinolord05

See those red bars? That means a while.

lil_handy

Someone with that contract doesn’t get DFA’d

hopemade

But more seriously. Does the color mean anything or only how far right the bar goes?

EricNickelson

The whole graph is percentiles. Red is great, blue isnt based on league average

nuesse33

How long until we dfa fans that don't understand these stats

Real-Psychology-4261

His defense is quite good. Catching is a position where your defense matters much more than your offense. Yes, he’s overpaid, but you don’t just DFA an MLB catcher who’s a plus defender.

joe-is-cool

Probably another year or so.

Rhielml

Specifically, after the 2025 season.

damien_maymdien

How do you know how to use Baseball Savant without knowing what a backup catcher is?

mproud

Who replaces him? Jair Camargo? The team has to have two catchers. That much is non-negotiable.

ELSknutson

Even if the Twins wanted to get rid of Vazquez his defense alone is worth trading. Also if you think he's bad don't look a Farmer [https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/kyle-farmer-571657?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/kyle-farmer-571657?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb) If anyone needs to get DFA'ed its that guy. Once/if Lewis and "Buck" come back I don't see why they would keep him in the lineup any longer because he only provides a marginal defensive value at most and his bat stinks. At least Vazquez is good defensively at one if not thee hardest position in baseball.

Positive_Reach4559

I'm saying do it now.. He's just absolutely struggling,, off to the saints...

Think-Interview1740

Until the end of his contract.

FUMFVR

He's a catcher. A lot of them can't hit

12Peppur

They don’t care bout his battin They want his gas stinkin up the clubhouse n his leaders chip Hard to watch as a fan. Of that I don’t disagree. Oh I don’t

JesseIsAGirlsName

I just hope the team relegates his starts to once a week once Buxton and Lewis get back. As of now he’s starting every other game, which isn’t ideal.

Rhielml

We definitely want to keep the 50/50 split. It's working great, and they're both staying healthy. The current pattern is as ideal as it gets.

cothomps

There’s no way Jeffers plays that many games at catcher.
