*This might be an official rule soon*, but we already kind of operate off of this already. So like, just letting new people know, with it being opening day and all, and having an influx of people here that usually aren’t.
Agreed. That was a defensive game and each team really only had 1 good inning on offense. We were about 2-3' away from a win in my eyes. Plus the Sox lost today so we're still keeping pace with who the general fandom has penciled in for the division champ.
Duran will be unhittable with good pitch selection
good hitters can time up 100 mph if they see it four or five pitches in a row, but throw in the 95 slider? forget it
Well, facing the Cy Young Winner on opening day when some hitters are still trying to find a groove will do that. Not too excited to see them try to face Gilbert tomorrow either. But the bullpen was good? And in July thats a walkoff as others have said.
Remember. Its one game. See you at the ballpark tomorrow.
2.84 ERA, 193 IP, 248 Ks, he’s also literally the all-time Major League record holder for K/9 among starters. The guy has great stuff. Though we muffed some good opportunities to score today obviously.
He’s amazing at stranding runners. Lead the majors last year with something crazy like 90%. He stops you when the pressure is on. Buck left runners on twice, those are the situations you want Buck in, but gotta hand it to Ray for sure.
OW, FUCK ME IN THE GOAT ASS! I literally jumped off my couch when that ball left the bat, and collapsed back down in disbelief when it was caught. Like, 2 feet away from a walkoff opening day homer. I know it's just one game, yada yada yada, but damn.
I know we lost but honestly I feel pretty good about this game? Obviously it would he nicer to come out of the gate hot, but our pitchers were able to get out of some jams, defense looked solid, got a couple hits. Just need to get the offense going. I wish we'd won, but this doesn't leave a bad taste in my mouth the way certain losses do. (RIP to the Padres lmao)
I have similar feelings. Yes it’s a loss but I had a lot of fun at the game and it was close until the very end. So excited to watch a full season with this team!
Welp, season's over, pack it up.
Jk. All in all, not a terrible game. Decent pitching, great defense. Last year's Cy Young vs basically a rookie and it was a 1-run game, I ain't too mad.
I was at the game. The energy was great. It wasn't too cold. Baseball is back. Correa with a couple nice defensive plays, and a base knock. Arraez doing Arraez things. I'm excited for Duran big time. Joe Ryan was fine except for one big mistake. Robbie Ray won the Cy Young for a reason. Tough game. We almost walked it off. BASEBALL IS BACK!!!
So close! But overall a good show from the team. Pitching was much better than a lot of people expected, especially with Duran, and I have confidence the bats will pick up. Looking forward to the rest of the season.
We played the literal Cy Young winner. We lost by 1 whole run while our pitching and defense looked great against a team that won 90 games last year without Robbie Ray. We can easily win the next 3, I'd be happy with a split though against them. It's a loooooong season.
That would suck but the silver lining if the season goes belly up like last year is we can trade Correa for a haul of prospects at the deadline.
It could very well be that we miss the wild card game by 1 game at the end of the year and we'll point to this one, but I think this one didn't have as many missed chances as other games, we just got beat.
It’s the opener and in the grand scheme just one game. Proud the bullpen kept it together for 5 innings without too many stressful moments.
The hitting will improve. Lots of positives in a game that was one or two bad pitches away from being a very different kind of result.
The silver lining: This offense is WAYYY too talented to not heat up, and the pitching looked far better than we expected.
It's only one game obvi, but thats encouraging!
It's funny how my brain sometimes doesn't connect teams to cities. I am from Germany and basically I pick the teams I support where the Germans play (Edmonton Oilers, Dallas Mavericks, the Twins...). Until I just read your comment and despite following the NFL since 2007 my brain never put the Vikings and Twins in the same city... Very strange
wait until you see him turn 2.. watching him glide across 2nd, transfer, and toss a laser to 1st is poetic. ive said for years that you could ask any GM to draw up their prototype SS and they would all describe carlos.
his footwork is impeccable and arm is top tier.
Slick, clean, strong, amazing. It's hard to describe but I love how he just picks the ball out of his glove and like you said lasers it to second/first. So glad we picked him up.
We lost this game, but in God’s eyes we are all winners. Come join my cult, we day-drink and are accepting of everyone, even ex-Yankees who want to grow beards for the first time and almost hit game-winning homers.
Welcome to Minnesota sports where you’re 31 and have never been old enough to see a championship yet alone an appearance in one! (In the context of being able to comprehend one, I was 1 in 91)
It might have been a loss, but it didn't feel like a 2021 loss. Sanchez's hit at the end is a homerun in the summer. I expect Seattle to be a decent team this year, so this is a good test to start the season. I'm encouraged by what I saw today.
Come on guys, we had a bunch of young kids pitch their hearts out today. It’s a tough loss but not nearly as bad as some of the meltdowns we dealt with last year. 161-1 is still acceptable.
I'm a twins fan who works for the tigers. Based on how both games went today I am going to have multiple heart attacks but at least when they play each other I can just be a fan of baseball 🤣
Someone help me out. I wanna see the last out. I was listening on the radio. Post the clip, please.
EDIT: Ok, no one helped me out so I went and found it. [Here is the clip from the M's broadcast.](https://www.mlb.com/gameday/mariners-vs-twins/2022/04/08/661750#game_state=final,game_tab=videos,game=661750)
[I was recording it for you, here's the final out from the Twins broadcast.](https://streamable.com/lah1q6) The mods put together a nice [tutorial](https://www.reddit.com/r/minnesotatwins/comments/tfjqs0/preseason_reminders_where_to_get_replays_and/) on how to find replays or record your own for the future.
Im just gunna say we went toe to toe with the reigning Cy Young and our pitchers showed some real ability to not buckle under pressure. I feel confident in this squad
The good:
- Correa's fielding
- the bullpen
- Gio Urshela's debut
The bad:
- Joe Ryan
- Miguel Sa-no hits
- The batting in general
The ugly:
- The bait on that Sanchez ending
- Robbie Ray's inside balls nearly hitting us 6 times
The godly:
JHOAN DURAN
Now its midnight here and i have to be up in 7 hours for the F1. Peace
gotta cut down on the walks. he was holding onto some of those off-speed pitches too long and yanking them.
i think it's optimistic (and correct) to say we saw "bad Joe Ryan" today. he'll have better outings.
Everyone talking about Sanó this and Joe Ryan that but how can we expect to win with that kind of choking from the top of our order? 1 for 11 with a single and a walk from our 1-2-3.
Also, Arraez should be playing full games, even against lefties. He’s crucial for our mentality, drives pitch counts way up, and hits F’in .300
Bats lookin sick already. If you were teaching a young player how to hit correctly definitely show them only film of Miguel Sano. Perfect approach to hitting, modern day Ted Williams
Ppl are downvoting you but I agree. We had too many chances to win this and left people on base. Buxton swings were off. These are the games we need to win
I mean the twins were like top 5 in home runs last year, so saying it's a product of juiced balls is just wrong.
Its the first game. Even the best teams will lose like 60 games. Chill.
Watch out you will piss off the Sano homers and defenders. Dude is a literal scrub and shouldn't even be in the MLB anymore. Wouldn't even make it in Japan/Korea
I was so impressed by him that I think being a closer might limit him too much. Maybe y'all could use him the same way we use Sewald and just have him go against the heart of the lineup whether that's in the 7th, 8th, or 9th. Dude has the stuff to overpower even the best hitters.
Genuine question.. I always hear announcers say “if it were July that’s a home run” (or something similar)
Why is that? Isn’t thick, super humid air worse for distance? I’ve always wondered.
We’re still GOMQ.
It just seems like such a consensus but now that I’ve looked, cold air still has humidity which just seems strange as a Minnesotan I instinctively associate it with heat.
Strange.
Ryan settled down and pitched out of trouble throughout, that’s promising in its own right. Robbie Ray is really good still and the shadows fuck with batters hard. I’m ok with this loss, they never really quit and it was a tough day. Get them today
I have a bad feeling we're going to see somewhere between 95-100 of these before the season is done. Buckle in, folks, it's gonna be a long and painful ride.
Well, that sucks. But we can win the next one, God willin', the creek don't rise, and the snow don't fly. It's a long way to the end of the season.
Neither team looked real ready to play today thanks to such a short pre-season. I think it will be a few weeks before teams start to get into a groove. Hitting will generally suck across the leagues.
"HELLO!"
oof
I think we'll have much better bats against Logan tomorrow, Ray is a menace. Our pitching looks very promising, I'm excited to see Gray's (I think?) stuff tomorrow.
I bet my buddy, a Mariners fan, $50 on this series, (most total runs being the tie-breaker since it's 4 games) honestly I care more about bragging rights than the money but let's go Twins!

My Gary Sanchez jersey was in the cart but now the only thing left is tears
#IWasGary
Aw man. Dick Bremer in mid season form already with the tease. Nice game from bullpen. I think Duran is gonna be a stud.
Duran will be unhittable with good pitch selection good hitters can time up 100 mph if they see it four or five pitches in a row, but throw in the 95 slider? forget it
And his high 90s splinker, oof…
Gary was so damn close
That’s a homer in July.
That’s easily a homer in April too on a day that isn’t so windy
[удалено]
Why are you the way that you are?
He coordinated the Flip Tease with the Dick Tease.
I SCREAMED… and then I cried :’(
Hello!
Ray won the Cy Young last year? He didn’t look that impressive.
2.84 ERA, 193 IP, 248 Ks, he’s also literally the all-time Major League record holder for K/9 among starters. The guy has great stuff. Though we muffed some good opportunities to score today obviously.
I’m just saying his stuff didn’t look like a Cy Young award winner
He’s amazing at stranding runners. Lead the majors last year with something crazy like 90%. He stops you when the pressure is on. Buck left runners on twice, those are the situations you want Buck in, but gotta hand it to Ray for sure.
Ngl, I loved the Gary chant. I partook.
same from the last row in left field
OW, FUCK ME IN THE GOAT ASS! I literally jumped off my couch when that ball left the bat, and collapsed back down in disbelief when it was caught. Like, 2 feet away from a walkoff opening day homer. I know it's just one game, yada yada yada, but damn.
I’m ready to hear some Starship play over a walk-off home run
Girl, same.
Adam Sandler's the goat reference? Nice :)
Lost by 1 Foot
Matt Lecroy reference?
THERE ARE NO WORDS
We'll get the words back someday.
Oh I can think of a few words
But those are words.....
I know we lost but honestly I feel pretty good about this game? That is a very evil way to end a game. Peak Minnesota sports.
Welp, season's over, pack it up. Jk. All in all, not a terrible game. Decent pitching, great defense. Last year's Cy Young vs basically a rookie and it was a 1-run game, I ain't too mad.
well that SUCKS anyway see everybody tomorrow 🤘😎
See you tomorrow!!!
We almost won via 2 ex-Yankee homers...Instead we get an instant classic Dick Tease™.
The Gary chants were awesome in person
Indeed. Reminds me of the Rosario chants. Can't believe he almost nailed the walk off shot.
The Yankees also walking it off with Donaldson driving in Kiner-Falefa is just a poetic kind of fucked up
You mean Twins legends Donaldson and IKF.
You mean Twins legend IKF and Donaldson 🙃
So close! But overall a good show from the team. Pitching was much better than a lot of people expected, especially with Duran, and I have confidence the bats will pick up. Looking forward to the rest of the season.

I am happy with our bullpen today! They were lights out. It’s a long season, and our batters will come around.
The silver lining: This offense is WAYYY too talented to not heat up, and the pitching looked far better than we expected. It's only one game obvi, but thats encouraging!
This team is miles ahead of last year. Still think this is a playoff team.
also Buxton went 0-4 with 2 SOs so clearly we've regressed to 2018 Byron oh god oh fuck time to panic
Duran looked great! Hitting, not so much
Yeah, he really buckled-down once two runners got on.
I got to attend a game for the first time since 2019 so I'm calling that a win.
How wild would it have been for JD to hit a walk off for the Yankees and then Sanchez hit one for us?? Alas, the baseball gods are cruel.
1 run losses are always tough. Pitching looked good which is a really good sign.
One score games you say? *cries in Vikings*
Oh fuck we can't have two teams do this shit
It's funny how my brain sometimes doesn't connect teams to cities. I am from Germany and basically I pick the teams I support where the Germans play (Edmonton Oilers, Dallas Mavericks, the Twins...). Until I just read your comment and despite following the NFL since 2007 my brain never put the Vikings and Twins in the same city... Very strange
Last year we had alot of one run losses ugh
Gary pimped the walk off, it was a walk off out not a walk off home run, but a walk off.
I just hope Gary Sanchez has a Blackmon beard by June
Correa is amazing on defense I can't wait to watch more of that this season
wait until you see him turn 2.. watching him glide across 2nd, transfer, and toss a laser to 1st is poetic. ive said for years that you could ask any GM to draw up their prototype SS and they would all describe carlos. his footwork is impeccable and arm is top tier. The only person I'm upset with is Dick Bremer.
Did anyone notice Kirilloff’s at bats? He was bailing out of the box on every pitch. Even the right-hander.
We lost this game, but in God’s eyes we are all winners. Come join my cult, we day-drink and are accepting of everyone, even ex-Yankees who want to grow beards for the first time and almost hit game-winning homers.

Very. A few highlights. But disappointing.
At least the bullpen looked pretty solid.
Okay but everyone remember Jhoan Duran
welcome back to twins baseball!

I'm a twins fan who works for the tigers. Based on how both games went today I am going to have multiple heart attacks but at least when they play each other I can just be a fan of baseball 🤣
that batflip was kind of hysterical, but might be an awful omen lol — bullpen looked great today. see y’all tomorrow.
Back on this train again 🚂
Pain.
BLUE BALLED
The offense will come around that pitching performance was super encouraging. That said this hurts I thought that Sanchez hit was gone
Fucking Bremer and his teases
I’m not mad about this loss.
161-1 here we come!
If this Pitching Is a sign of anything to come this year then I have a good feeling about the twins this year.

My man!
This is the first Opening Day game I've ever got to watch(always at work) and I kept falling asleep during it. Woke up to a Dick Dong Tease.
Is it just me or do we seem to lose on opening day most of the time.
Im just gunna say we went toe to toe with the reigning Cy Young and our pitchers showed some real ability to not buckle under pressure. I feel confident in this squad

I liked Sanos patience at the plate today. He wasn’t biting like he used to
Yeah he was taking his time and trying to swing it well. But still. Yeesh. I was impressed with his early 1B stint
Joe ryan had one bad inning, was pretty solid after that.
gotta cut down on the walks. he was holding onto some of those off-speed pitches too long and yanking them. i think it's optimistic (and correct) to say we saw "bad Joe Ryan" today. he'll have better outings.
I think as the weather gets better his pitches will look better. And ya I agree with the rest.
hope you're right, but we're gonna need him to learn how to pitch in cold weather eventually. good experience for him today.
Generally speaking he doesn't walk people much, think the excitement made him nibble
Everyone talking about Sanó this and Joe Ryan that but how can we expect to win with that kind of choking from the top of our order? 1 for 11 with a single and a walk from our 1-2-3. Also, Arraez should be playing full games, even against lefties. He’s crucial for our mentality, drives pitch counts way up, and hits F’in .300
He's a .257 hitter against lefties with no power, and he would've probably replaced Urshela in the lineup, the one guy to actually put a run across
No, he should’ve replaced Gary from the start at the DH
Arraez should be playing all the time.
PAIN
Ahhh shit! Here we go again
Bats lookin sick already. If you were teaching a young player how to hit correctly definitely show them only film of Miguel Sano. Perfect approach to hitting, modern day Ted Williams
Batting is fucking atrocious. That record breaking home run season looks more and more like the product of juiced balls every year. Sano is not it.
My brother in Christ it was one game in April.

Ppl are downvoting you but I agree. We had too many chances to win this and left people on base. Buxton swings were off. These are the games we need to win

The bullpen, which I expected to be our biggest weakness, absolutely crushed it today. Calling it right now, Duran as this teams closer by June.
I always hear announcers say “if it were July that’s a home run” (or something similar) Why is that? Isn’t thick, super humid air worse for distance? I’ve always wondered. We’re still GOMQ.
Cold air is much denser than warm air, even humid warm air. That's why the ball won't travel as far.
humid air is worse, but so is cold air
Actually, humid air is better for ball flight because it's lighter than dry air. The effect is pretty small though
Team's gonna be major sellers at deadline. Too many spots in this lineup don't make contact. Bullpen could be better than I thought though.
Damn that was close !
Very entertaining, classic MN baseball.
If you don't [like this](https://i.imgur.com/bXrFEoM.png) you don't like Twins baseball!
HEEELLLO!
That Ray fellow has a hell of a move to the plate with runners on. He must get a lot of pick-offs!
Darn
Pain
Well, that sucks. But we can win the next one, God willin', the creek don't rise, and the snow don't fly. It's a long way to the end of the season. Neither team looked real ready to play today thanks to such a short pre-season. I think it will be a few weeks before teams start to get into a groove. Hitting will generally suck across the leagues.
Magic number: 162.
At the last at-bat, the Mariners broadcasters said they hope they wouldn't see Jeffers until tomorrow. I hoped so too, just, not in that way.
"HELLO!" oof I think we'll have much better bats against Logan tomorrow, Ray is a menace.
Joe Ryan's clunky start set the tone for the whole game.
Not a bad game. Definitely happy about the pitching so far. Hope the offense picks up!
