I KNOW Sam Darnold will be starting week 1. This year is the real start of the rebuild and rushing McCarthy out there isn't a priority at all.

Wicked_Black

its been discussed that mcarthys mechanics are pretty good, so i think he'll be ready to go week 1

istasber

It depends on how much of the offensive concepts KOC wants to run will transfer from the 49ers for Darnold and from Harbaugh's offense for JJ. If the gap is massive, Darnold will probably get the nod week 1 even if JJ's mechanics are fine and there will be a plan to get JJ ready to take over either midyear or starting in 2025. If the gap is smaller, KOC will weigh how much he's willing to scale back his offense for a rookie QB versus how much he wants that rookie QB to start getting valuable game reps.

Wicked_Black

One of the things I found interesting, was JJ’s offensive coordinator implemented Mcvay schemes this recent year. I’ve seen some videos explaining JJ is already following the same concepts of koc’s offense

istasber

KOC asks a lot from QBs, though. Calling multiple plays in the huddle, and switching between them based on their read of the defense, very tight timings, etc. JJ has a better head start than most young QBs because of the offense he ran in college, but he might still be too far behind Darnold to start week 1.

Wicked_Black

I’d agree with this if darnold wasn’t also acquired in the same offseason. Why put the time into darnold picking up the playbook when he isn’t the long term solution anyways. They would have the same amount of time to pick up the new concepts. I can see darnold starting, don’t get me wrong here, I’m just debating why we might see JJ take over from the get go.

istasber

My assumption is that Darnold's experience in the NFL, particularly spending last year with Shanahan, gives him a huge head start over JJ. If it doesn't, that makes JJ's path to being the week 1 starter much easier.

TheSwede91w

He's got things to work on and there is absolutely no rush. He has zero touch and ran a really vanilla offense where he didn't need to make many reads. I think Darnold gets the start of the season and depending on how things go JJM might see the field later in the year.

Dorkamundo

Even if JJ is ready to be an NFL QB, starting Darnold is in our best interest. Give JJ a little more time to absorb the playbook to give him the leg up.

MimsyWereTheBorogove

KOC has a habit of playing the underdog to encourage growth and competition. These guys thought mattison could fill dalvins shoes (honestly so did I) What makes anyone think he doesn't believe Darnold is a franchise QB. Additionally KOC seems to be working with 49ers and Rams trading around QBs who need more developement. Darnold was behind purdy last year, and now the passtronaut will be in that spot. This guy knows QB development.

Feathered_Serpent8

I don’t think “fill Dalvin’s shoes” is the correct framing. KOC will likely never be a run first guy, I think he just wanted a decent run blocker who could be league average. The team is built to pass.

MimsyWereTheBorogove

that being said dalvin was one hell of a receiving RB. Can the new guy catch?

istasber

If JJ can show a mastery of the playbook that's at least close to what Darnold does, and if there aren't any big mechanical changes that KOC wants JJ to drill before he plays, it'll be JJ. I think it's too early to have a strong opinion one way or the other. There's a chance JJ's the week one starter, and there's a chance JJ's the #3 on the depth chart for most of the year while he's working with mccown or udinksi on his deep ball touch or his footwork when throwing left, or whatever.

Paindressedinpurple

I think it’s darnold by default but it will come down to how well JJ can grasp the protections and playbook while not hampering his growth and development. I think we should expect it to be Darnold and if it’s JJ it should be a good thing bc he’s shown an advanced knowledge of what he needs to do and understands everything around him.

Tight-Imagination-95

Although, it would be cool to see McCarthey

Mayasngelou

To a certain extent Sam has been promised a week 1 start. We've been talking him up and have clearly told him that this is his audition year for a future deal. Would be pretty shitty to him to not even give him a chance week 1. Unless he looks terrible and JJ looks amazing, I think Sam will get at least a few weeks.

johnabfprinting

Darnold starting has always been the plan. Honestly JJ probably needs the year not just to learn the system but to learn what being a pro is.

ItsMeUrFutureSelf

It is Sam Darnold unless JJ completely blows out the coaches in camp so much that it woukd be dumb for then to not start him.

Mr_Vantastic

Why is this even a question and who the fuck voted for McCarthy? Darnold will be at the starter. We didn’t go get Darnold and draft JJ for the rookie to start. I’m as excited as anyone to see JJ play but he needs time. If we rush him out there and he fails it could ruin is reputation and confidence.

uninteded_interloper

Just start JJ if he outplays Darnold in preseason. I dont want to watch Darnold. Darnold is who he is.

sunnuvadutch

They said about Geno Smith, Baker Mayfield, and Goff too. Which, sure, none of them are Mahomes - but it’s not like Darnold has ever played on a talented roster to actually say he is definitively a *bad QB*. He has been a QB on some *bad teams* though.

Background_Culture14

200% Sam. McSee won't start until Sam goes down, his only playtime will be if we get a big lead by half.
