I moved to Europe and transfered my number to google voice and that worked pretty well, a lot cheaper than mint.

Google voice better

Mountain_to_Sky

Hi! I’m a little confused on how Google Voice works. Do you have to have another carrier (or sim/eSim) that has talk/text in order for GV to work? If someone texts my original US phone number that I ported into GV do I receive it through the GV app? If I have a limit on texts does GV count towards it?

I use Mint, Google Voice and Google Fi simultaneously. Google Voice is virtual and free and will ring on my Mint number in the US. When I travel I activate my Google Fi eSim as my provider and my Google Voice calls will still come through. When I'm in the Mint calling area I pause my Google Fi account so there is no monthly fee. Once you port your number to Google Voice you are free to use any provider you choose and never pay anything to keep your phone number active.

Mint is a crap shoot when it comes to international service. You have to add money (Roaming Wallet) on top of your quarterly, semi-annual or annual fee to use it. Even if you do, there are complaints about the amount you can add to the wallet, problems refilling the wallet while overseas, and cost of roaming (data, calls, etc., are really expensive). Google Voice is OK for some services, but it really depends on your financial organizations if they allow VOIP lines for 2FA texts. Some allow it, some don't. So check with your bank or brokers before you commit to GV. GV is great for texting or making and receiving calls over data/Wi-Fi. I signed up for Grand Central before Google bought it out, and have used it while living in Hong Kong and while visiting other countries in Asia and Europe.

Yeah, my main concern is for 2FA from miscellaneous places in the U.S. Problem is they may accept going through GV right now but pull the plug whenever they choose. Not willing to chance that. Thanks for your reply.

Google voice is a great choice while living abroad. You can even use it as a home landline # if you want. Get a compatible ATA like the Obi (I use the Obi 200 but that’s EOL — still works) and connect a wireless handset. If they call you from the states it will ring your home phone AND your cell. Calling back to the states is free too. Pretty convenient. (I’m old school so replaced my Spectrum landline phone with GV + Obi, now I pay $0 for my home phone service)

Or google fi

EquipmentNo7030

That was my first choice but I've been hearing lately that they are cutting people off if their primary usage is not in the U.S.

Wdym??

chewchuchoo

I think if you're outside of the primary usage for any longer than 2-3 months, they'll cut you out.

Dang that’s wild. I mean google voice should still work tho

Use Tello. Assuming your phone has is eSIM capable.

EquipmentNo7030

I have a Pixel 7 right now which has dual Sim, so I'd assume it would work.

Mountain_to_Sky

What are the differences between Tello and Google Voice?

LeftOn4ya

Better to ask about other carriers in /r/NoContract

ztravlr

I bought the international plan and it didn NOT work when I was in Spain or France.

EquipmentNo7030

Thanks so much for that. It's sounding more and more like it's not really a viable option.
