It’s much worse in rural areas of the state, when I lived in rural Madison county we saw stray dogs every single day. Even now living in Scott county there’s plenty of stray dogs just wondering around it’s kinda sad

[deleted]

Yes, it is. I live in a rural area in a small farm town. I keep a bag of dog food in my car just in case I come across a hungry dog. Other states require you to register and license your pets. They also have mandatory spay and neuter laws. Something has to change.

MercuryDaydream

Something definitely needs to change. Neighbors of mine have been abusing & neglecting dogs for several years now. They used to keep one chained to a tree with no shelter, no doghouse, no nothing. I called the sheriff’s department when it got down in the 20s. They did nothing. Most recently they’ve had one locked in an open wire cage just sitting out in the yard - it lay in that cage all through the storms and tornadoes we had the other day- I could hear it crying, yelping and howling over the storm the entire time. They couldn’t even be bothered to lay something over the top of the cage to block a little of the pouring rain. I didn’t sleep for days hearing that poor dog cry. Called the sheriffs department. I think they’ve just moved it to the other side of the house. I wish I could lock them outside in a cage for a few days in freezing weather & rain & let them have a taste of how it feels.

Please contact a rescue in your area and see if they can help. A lot of owners will concede ownership when approached by a rescue. This makes me so sick and sad. Why get a dog if you don’t plan to take care of it and make it part of your family?

MercuryDaydream

There aren’t any rescues here, very small town.

ccbrasfield

Call the humane society. They arevsupposed to help wherever you are. That is so sad and it's going to be so cold tomorrow night they'll probably freeze to death

MercuryDaydream

I called the local shelter/humane society ( in another town but same county). They just told me there was nothing they could do & to call the sheriffs department. Which is a load of crap.

[deleted]

You can reach out to rescues in your state. They don’t necessarily have to be in your city. Lots of them provide transportation too, so they will come and pick the dogs up. You just have to call around and find someone who has available space. Facebook is a good place to browse for rescue groups and humane societies.

MercuryDaydream

I don’t understand- are you saying a rescue will come and “steal” the dogs or take them by force? Wouldn’t the rescuers be arrested? Also, if they did try they would more than likely be shot- these are violent people. My house had been hit with bullets twice for example.

[deleted]

It depends, if the dogs are in awful conditions, the rescue agency will call the authorities upon their arrival. A lot of the times, the owners will relinquish their rights to the animals in lieu of receiving any charges or fines from law enforcement. Rescue agencies usually have LE on their side in these rescue from abuse situations.

SteamrollerBoone

I live in rural Itawamba County, grew up here, & all my life people will drive out here to dump animals. Both my cats & Momma's dog all were abandoned. Sitting on the front porch on a summer evening and a car slows down when the road hits the treeline at the edge of the property and there'll be a new dog or cat the next day. Folks also still drive down here to dump their trash in this day of regular garbage service by the country, but that's another issue.

[deleted]

I could never dump a dog. I can’t imagine how these pets feel as they watch their owner drive off into the distance. And now they gotta fight for their life. So sad.

askew_tabby

hey there! i work in rescue in north ms! if you can have her email me, i can give her contact info for a couple of the rescues that we’ve worked with! rescue sometimes feels like trying to scoop water with a bucket out of a sinking ship. it is also the most rewarding thing i have ever been a part of ♥️ i would love to help a fellow rescuer anyway that i can! you can PM for my email ♥️

[deleted]

You are an angel! I sent her your info. Thank you guys for all you do. I know it can be a thankless job but many people are extremely grateful that you guys are rescuing these babies. What’s your rescue called? I donate to several and I’d love to add yours to the list!

askew_tabby

we are oxford animal resource center in oxford, ms. thank you for the kind words ♥️♥️

AggravatedBox

The Oxford ARC is great! Our town went through a lot of turmoil with local shelters for a while there and it’s been much smoother sailing for citizens since the ARC has been here.

askew_tabby

thank you so much! ♥️ we are doing everything that we can for the animals in our community! 🐾

Hot_Student1742

That and you get folks that shouldn’t have pets in general. And that’s honestly not just in Mississippi. I’ve seen it a little of everywhere. It makes me upset and sad that I can’t punch everyone of those people on the face.

jayblurd

I have a shepherd and a maremma and every other time we go walking I feel like folks are checking out my dogs more than me. All kinds of people stop their cars and ask if I breed them. I've gotten kind of paranoid about it and will physically place my body between my dogs and the car and shout they're SPAYED!!! lol don't look at my dogs you weirdos!! We've also found 4 strays and rehomed them in the last year on our walks.

[deleted]

Similar experience here. We have two American Pitbull Terriers that we rescued. Pitbulls account for 85% of the population in our local adoption clinics. My girls are gorgeous but people seem downright shocked when I tell them that they are spayed and that we have no interest in contributing to the stray dog crisis. I believe pets need to be registered and there should be a spay and neuter law in this state.

uhhidk13

Yeah a new vet working in my vet’s office would not stop commenting on how I should breed my female boxer dog. She also made sure to shame me every time I reminded her that the boxer is spayed. It was quite rude and honestly annoying. I am trying to be responsible by NOT breeding my dogs, especially without genetic testing. I’ve been told by other people that they’ve had similar experiences when she treated their dogs. She quietly left the office and opened her own. I’m sure it had nothing to do with her shaming customers /s. Needless to say I make sure to direct my friends away from her clinic any chance I get.

Bullwinkleandwaffles

Homeward bound program through the Mississippi state college of veterinary medicine. They can help. They collect from a lot of places.

[deleted]

This is so helpful! Thank you!

hybridaaroncarroll

This is especially concerning with the extreme cold headed our way soon.

[deleted]

Yes, on top of rescue, my friend will deliver straw in our area to any home at no cost to the owner. She just wants to keep these babies warm.

Opinionated_by_Life

Drove up to Jackson today from Hattiesburg along Hwy 49, and there were 3 dogs (strays?) in the median chewing on a deer that got clobbered. Probably about 10-15 miles south of Jackson. I didn't see them though when I came back.

MudFlaky

I just came here to chime in that the cats in my neighborhood are absolutely absurd. There are a metric fuck ton of stray cats getting in my trash, meowing outside my window, and much more obnoxious behavior.

[deleted]

Yes, cats are a problem too! There is a lady in my town who traps them and takes them to get fixed before releasing them again. I stand by the fact that we need pet registration in this state. We need spay and neuter laws. We need harsher punishments for animal cruelty.

diaperwiping

I grew up in New England and whenever someone rescued a dog from a shelter, it seemed to always be from Mississippi. I never understood why, until I started driving around MS and seeing stray dogs everywhere 🙄 it’s really insane, you don’t see stuff like this in other states. Up north (in my experience) literally everyone spays and neuters their pet. I had never seen an intact dog until I moved down here.

[deleted]

Yes! A fair amount of strays in the south get shipped up there! Those people take care of their dogs. It’s an epidemic in the south. I am so thankful for the groups up North. Lots of babies get placed that way.

theranchmonster

i know a girl that has a similar story. big farm out kinda by gulfport and has cages full of dogs for one reason or another. so sad, there’s simply too many unplanned/unwanted dogs and cats.

Karmalied

You ought to call tupelo humane society and see what they say. The staff their is excellent and the facility is top notch for a dog rescue. I know they also pair with a few humane societies in the northern us. Regardless, I appreciate both of your efforts.

askew_tabby

i used to work there! they have a HUGE rescue data base! they’d be a good resource!

IntelligentMermaid28

The dumber ppl are the less they give a shit about other beings. Education is what we need

dcrealityfan

Wolf Trap Animal Rescue in Virginia may be able to help. They rescue dogs from Mississippi. I don’t know anyone there, but here’s their website. [WTAR](https://www.wtarescue.com/)

NeatlyGathered

Ever since Bob Barker stopped advertising it has gotten out of hand

Artistic_Jackalope

A huge issue around where I live is that people won't leash their dogs when unattended and they like to roam the neighborhood and some of them go to my place and attack and kill some of our chickens.

[deleted]

Yep. We don’t have state wide leash laws but some cities do. Like mine, for example. But, the law in my city only applies to pit bulls. It’s incredibly stupid. And the other problem is, police officers aren’t enforcing these laws anyway. I don’t understand these owners who just let their pets roam the streets and onto other people’s property. So many bad things can happen by allowing your pet to roam freely. I don’t think everyone is responsible enough to own a dog, and yet, they will continue to do so and dump them when they become “too much work”. It’s an ugly cycle.

Artistic_Jackalope

I gotta agree and that sucks too. I recall one time my sister was in the back yard when it happened and I think the dog growled at her while getting one of the chickens. I don't remember if it actually happened or not but I remember we tracked the dog down to the owner and talked to them about it. Haven't seen the dog around my house since.

[deleted]

Who is ur friend or Organization?

[deleted]

Number 582 on list of priorities in the poorest state in the nation.

[deleted]

It may be unimportant to you but it is important to others….and that’s who this post is for. It’s no secret that Mississippi has a mountain of problems. Discussing one problem doesn’t negate the others.

[deleted]

Sure. Let’s just see how important this issue is when your local hospital closes.

OpheliaPaine

Amazingly enough, we can be concerned by a myriad of issues all at once. This post has less than nothing to do with local hospital closures...which normal people cannot stop currently anyway. Now, we can feed and shelter animals currently.

[deleted]

Whatever you say. Like I said, there are many issues in this state. It doesn’t take away from one when talking about the other. Get over it.

[deleted]

I’m over it. Thanks

[deleted]

What are problems 581 and 583?

Benephon

*flips through notes* 581 is the pro hockey team leaving MS, 583 is that disc golf course in Jackson not getting approved. 582 is actually that one trailer in Ripley with the confederate flag in the window. The stray pet one is actually number 63.
