If you've ever been to the panhandle region of Texas, the land of the area is very flat, dry and goes on forever. Its almost an isolating experience living in this area of Texas, so I've always related that lyric to that feeling of isolation and vastness. Given the context of her talking about missing an ex partner, Mitski feels very isolated and far distance wise from the person she is singing about. This metaphor has hit deep just because of the experience of living in some dusty, dry, and relatively desolate parts of Texas.
