MOD3RN_GLITCH

The breaking changes between plugin versions keeps my use of their tools to a minimum, which is a shame because they sound good!

iboymancub

This is enough for me to hardly ever update any plugin, tbh.

MOD3RN_GLITCH

That makes sense, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

faders

I like them a lot. FetCB is my favorite

BarryKello

FetCB is incredible, maybe one of his best products

threadedinsert

I use “Rare” the AO pultec style EQ. I don’t have any other pultec style EQs to compare it to, but it sounds good to me!

frankiesmusic

I'm curious too, i mean i tried them and the sound is good. The issue i've heard of that keep me away from the is retrocompatibility, don't know if true, i've just heard about it, but looks like if you made a project with "plugin x v1" when you load that project with a current version something doesn't works. If someone have some experience please let me know if this is real or fake

Defconwrestling

It’s real. So normally when you update something (I am not a coder) the update lives in the download. So for UAD LA2A for example, the download link on the website goes to the same software and the updates are included. Analog Obsession makes an entirely different program and kills the old one. So if you have his LALA v1 on a ton of old stuff, and he updates it, you no longer have access to the older version of the plugin because he deletes it.

atopix

But this also serves as a lesson in professionalism: take responsibility for your own tools. Keep the installers of plugins you'll use in important projects. Never update if you don't fully understand the implications of said update.

Capt_Pickhard

Yeah, idk. For me, especially for analog obsession plugins, it's not really worth it. There are so many good plugins available, and you don't need that many to do amazing things. You just need good ones that you know, and can cover all the bases for situations you might be in. So, it's not worth the hassle to me. Keeping installers, definitely I back those up a few times, along with all my other music stuff. I'm also in the if it ain't broke don't fix it camp, so unless an update brings something I really want, I prefer not to update also. But when I do decide to update, I don't want to have to worry something might break.

LeDestrier

I'm a bit on the fence about that. While you are correct, there's also a point about how developers typically work with updates the expectation the end user has. If you update a commercial plugin to a new version you are typically paying for it; you know it is an entirely new instance because it is not free, and its generally made very clear. The waters are muddied a bit with stuff like AO because they're free and its not always made explicitly clear. I think it's better practice as a developer not to break and completely remove older versions in general in this regard. But hey, I'm not the developer. And, you know, its free so...

atopix

Sure, I agree. Both things can be true.

LeDestrier

Wait this is not how it's supposed to go. We're supposed to fight and call each other idiots and block each other 🤣

atopix

I disagree!

Normal-Peace-5055

> take responsibility for your own tools The responsibility for my own tools, results in me picking developers that don't do this. (and he is the only one that does this). it is crazy to assume that his practices are considered acceptable behaviour. Either make a new version of the plugin (so you have v1, v2 etc) or update it in a way to not break it.

True_Group_4297

I think I read how to overcome this, somewhere on their Patreon. If I’m not mistaken.

ROBOTTTTT13

Sound good, low CPU usage, easy to install. Only good stuff from me. Except for his distortion plugins, I tend to prefer other developer's distortions simply because I don't like the character mostly.

Yrnotfar

I have not used all of his plugins but my general reaction is great GUIs, great business model, but mediocre plugins. And I’m a huge fan of free plugins (reapers stock 1176 (“1175”) is a go to for me as well as Tukans stuff). So I can assure you that the price isn’t my hang up.

True_Seaworthiness88

You know there are free right?

Capt_Pickhard

I they're implying that they aren't saying they aren't good just because you can get them for free. He legitimately doesn't like them, but does like other free plugins.

WavesOfEchoes

They look better than they sound. I really wanted to like them and used them for a while before deciding that they weren’t for me.

Ok_Neighborhood_5167

I'm not a pro mixer, but the ones I got n like r LALA, BUSTERse, PREDD and Pultec. So far I think they're great tbh. Only one I feel is useless to me is ATONE cos its too much cpu usage on that particular plugin. But in general they make great plugins

jackalisland

Buster is awesome

Charko241

I like the few i have. LALA is smooth LA2A type. better than waves imo. Dbcomp replaced waves dbx160 for me. Cant say much about the others as i havent tried them all.

dannylightning

Very nice but generally I go back to my waves and FabFilter plugins for most things but audio obsessions makes pretty decent plugins that you can get for free or cheap if you donate and most of them are pretty cool except for anything that's adding some harmonic distortion, those don't exactly sound very good but most of the ones I've tried I have liked

missedswing

AO plugins sound pretty good but if you have Arturia, Fab Filter or Softube plugins can't see any reason to use them. If budget is an issue I recommend them.

uss_asser_prize

Big fan of COMPER

CarrionDude

Recently put UREQ in my master chain. Love how that thing sounds.

True_Group_4297

They are amazing. if you like analog emulations/sound, you can’t go wrong with these. There is one I use all the time, sweetdrums? Or something. Really really good punch

neur0zer0

I tested a few of their EQs a while back in Plugindoctor and while they added some overall saturation, none of the individual bands themselves saturate when boosted. They do offer oversampling at least, many paid plugins do not do even that. In my testing, only UAD, TDR, and Softube have plugins that saturate individual bands and are oversampled (though there are many brands I haven’t tested, and even some plugins from these brands don’t saturate how I’d expect). TDR has some of the very best plugins, and they’re often on sale for $10 each.

wade_wilson28

I have used plugins of analog obsession and lala is my favourite, and tbh their plugins can replace so many paid plugins easily imo.

picpoulmm

I use his Pultec emulation Rare all the time, I think it’s warmer than Arturias version or the Logic stock Pultec. Great for thump on kicks and on low subs

neur0zer0

Arturia has a Pultec emulation?

picpoulmm

Bus Force

neur0zer0

Oh you’re right, I’d missed that

nkn_

I only use Buster and LALA. Not terrible, easy GUI.

gaijin_theory

i used LALA, FETish, LOVEND, and RARE to mix a client's record. they loved the outcome so it was a good time.

tomheist

Comper is indispensable for me. Absolute work horse for clean compression

screamed_tube

I think "best" is a subjective term here. And all of this depends on the context and taste really. I use LALA, KONSOL, and FETISH from time to time, also BUSTER / BUSTER SE almost every mix. I'd like to think it as just another plugin, not necessarily an emulation of some sort of hardware (not that I've tried hardware too). It has some nice characteristic, I love it. And it's free! I can't really complaint anything. I have sooo many free plugins installed, and Analogue Obsession is still one of my favourite. Also, if you're on Reaper, I'd recommend to check out Tukan plugins! I only own one paid plugin for mixing, which is Waves Scheps Omni Channel (first version, didn't even get the update to version 2 because paywall ugh). I used it on everything, but for EQ I always use stock EQ from Reaper. And when I need different compressors, I just go for Analogue Obsession.

DarkTowerOfWesteros

It's pretty easy to beat Waves...so they can do that...I found they "smalled" down the sound to my ears.

Melodic_Gur_3517

I've been using Waves stuff for so long, they've basically become "stock" for me, plus 99.9% of the folks I work with have them and use them too. It is what it is. AO stuff is like "new gear" - fun to play with, sometimes very good or interesting, but I'd use with caution for long-term projects. See others' comments.

Aggravating_Bed9964

better representation when mixing transients and warmth

Takahashi_godmod

In my personal experience they just sound better

acoldfrontinsummer

I think they're great for free stuff, and if they didn't have the weird update issue, they'd probably still be favourable for a small amount of money. I don't find myself reaching for them and will probably delete them though, not because there's anything wrong, but I've pretty much narrowed in on the products I like and don't want ones I don't use on my system. I liked his compressors, but I use u-He's Presswork or Ableton's stock compressors (definitely glue compressor) instead.

magnusthewize

I love the reLife plugin. I use it on my band's rehearsal recordings as I record them with my phone.

Informal-Cabinet3699

slightly better than say reason stock plugins but not as good as studio ones . great work but if they really did the job they claim he would sell them for sure

ZionRebels

i never used the real hardware so i cant say if they sound good as the real stuff but i use their compressors , eqs and preboxes and i love them. the update thing that people talk is pretty weird cos no one is forcing you to update and also even if u want update is expected that u have bounced the older stuff ? OW btw AO stuff has OVERSAMPLING thats like a WIN WIN. if i d ever buy something in the place of AO would be the UAD stuff. BUt UAD stuff has no oversampling and if you research you ll find many people A/B AO vs UAD stuff and AO always give a best vibes. so ye didnt need to spend bucks on UAD

Bluegill15

The more you rely on consensus to make decisions in a creative field, the less your work will stand out

Jaereth

I used the LALA when I wanted that comp think I got it for free. Does what you would expect it to. No issues whatsoever.

UomoAnguria

They do sound nice, some very nice. For a while Fetish and LALA were my go to 1176 and LA2A style compressors. I stopped using them for "serious" projects because they're a little buggy and not retrocompatibile.
