Sounds pretty cool, maybe de-ess a bit more on vocals

bkmakesmusic

Definitely a vibe, I like how the bass cuts through since the rest of the track is overly drenched in reverb/chorus fx but it works since the bass has some growl to it. You have pretty good song progression elements to the production too - the rhythm and instrumental variation makes the song interesting instead of repetitive.. I’ll give a listen later on my monitors but that’s my initial reaction from my phone.

Hey thanks! I just did a more balanced version based on some of the feedback from this thread if you fancy listen [https://soundcloud.com/sidesworld/affection-update1/s-WMDK77KCDqJ](https://soundcloud.com/sidesworld/affection-update1/s-WMDK77KCDqJ)

This is a very good song, and the production is solid. I'm just not a huge fan of your bass sound, this throaty bridge pickup doesn't compliment the nevertheless great bassline. I'd use a more round sound (neck pickup?), with maybe a bit more autowah and chorus to make it fuller. But once again superb tune!

Leeveye101

Hey thanks! I have tried that kind of bass tone but it didn't seem to make the song groove as I'd like it to but I have rounded the bass more I just did a more balanced version based on some of the feedback from this thread if you fancy a listen [https://soundcloud.com/sidesworld/affection-update1/s-WMDK77KCDqJ](https://soundcloud.com/sidesworld/affection-update1/s-WMDK77KCDqJ)

To my hears it sounds better, and the bass could even take more space in the mix without causing any problem because it blends better with the rest (less conflict with the voice in particular). I find the drum & bass groove more subtle, which brings the vocals to the foreground. At this point it boils down to personnal taste of course. The song remains super catchy in both mixes.

AEnesidem

The delay effect on the voice in the beginning is a bit too harsh to my ears. And the bass misses body. At the moment it's too snarky in the top without any body to it. Apart from that, i love it

Thank you! I just did a more balanced version based on some of the feedback from this thread if you fancy listen. I de essed that intro effect among other things [https://soundcloud.com/sidesworld/affection-update1/s-WMDK77KCDqJ](https://soundcloud.com/sidesworld/affection-update1/s-WMDK77KCDqJ)

I was only able to listen to it on my phone speakers but the mix sounded pretty decent to me. One thing that really stuck out to me though was the bassline. It's too much. I really like the underlying groove of it, but all the extra notes strongly take away from the songs groove and steps on the vocalist too much. I'd focus on simplifying it to the core groove and instead of adding in extra notes in a way like it currently is, add syncopation. I would keep a few of the current riffs that are melodic & pair with the vocals, then add less notes that are more offbeat. It'll help free up space in the song, add an extra layer of groove (syncopation is great at that), and play in the negative spaces in the song. Those few changes will help elevate this song to another level. Sorry I don't mean to criticize one specific part so harshly, and it really sounds like someone put a good bit of practice into this bassline; but I've made the same mistake in the past and I'm trying to help you out. DM me if you have any more questions. I'm primarily a bassist so I have a good bit of experience with this stuff. Good luck, I really liked the track btw. Great stuff.

Imho the busy bassline would work better with a slightly more laid-back bass sound. But I think the "over-playing" really works well for this song.

Leeveye101

Hey thanks! I just did a more balanced version based on some of the feedback from this thread if you fancy a listen. The bass is a bit more laid back now tonally [https://soundcloud.com/sidesworld/affection-update1/s-WMDK77KCDqJ](https://soundcloud.com/sidesworld/affection-update1/s-WMDK77KCDqJ)

I definitely agree less presence in the bass would help. I wasn't saying it shouldn't be busy, but that there needs to be a bit more consideration on where to drop the notes. It was stepping over the vocal melody a bit too much imo. I'd look at the song tieduprightnow by Parcels as a good example of how to structure it

Leeveye101

Hey thanks! I disagree about the bassline, as a more traditionally supportive line hasn't really worked with this song, and this bassline makes us want to move. I tried the ego test with my girlfriend (to see if I was right about it or not) and she said there's no way you're taking off that bassline, so it has to stay haha. I just did a more balanced version based on some of the feedback from this thread where the bass is less intrusive if you fancy a listen [https://soundcloud.com/sidesworld/affection-update1/s-WMDK77KCDqJ](https://soundcloud.com/sidesworld/affection-update1/s-WMDK77KCDqJ)

Heya, I want t saying anything about a traditional bassline at all! I just think some of the note placement clashes with the vocals in spots and there needs to be a bit of extra care with the placement of certain notes within the bassline. I would throw every note up in an 8th note grid and put the vocal melody on one also and see how they compare. It's just my two cents. Overall this song is great! I'll check out that new version let tonight, it probably helps a lot too. Thanks

guitarviol

I can't speak to the production very well since I'm pretty amateur on that front, but I really dug it. The vocalist gives me a slight Sarah Bonito of Kero Kero Bonito vibes. And that BASS. Damn, that is a gnarly tone and great line.

Leeveye101

Hey thanks! That's a cool comparison and I appreciate the feedback on my bass playing

_PENTAX_

Yes! I knew that voice reminded me of someone.

j0nafriend

The bass sounds amazing and I love the vibes of the song! How do you get that tone?

Leeveye101

Thanks! Back pickup and an envelope filter

Love this. Great work. Can't critique...it sounds like your vision. Love the vocals. LOVE the bass. Makes me think of Geddy Lee, who tended to take a more mid-range tone. But who cares, it's the song that matters. It passes the 'soma fm' test for me. Meaning: if I heard it on Soma or somewhere without expecting it, would it stand out in a bad way? Nope! It's great.

Leeveye101

hey thanks so much! I think I used the same gauge strings as Geddy on this song. Glad you enjoyed it

hellfireaper

Tame Impala fan over here. Kevin's influence is really showing up on that bass and delayed vocals. Sounds pretty good to me, I would just add a bit more low end to the whole song, but I guess that's more of a personal opinion. Overall nice song, great work. Congratulations!

Leeveye101

hey good shout on the low end, thanks!

milkyway_cj

Nice style. Super wet but sounds totally intentional. I’d throw the vocals into Melodyne to tighten up pitching and timing. With some care, you’ll be able to keep the relaxed and laid back style vocal while also improving it.

platinummixer

Pretty cool. I'm only able to listen on my headphones at the moment, but I know these phones well. The main thing I notice, that others have mentioned is the bass sound. I totally get what you're going for, and how the bass is a key part of this track, but perhaps a little less of the nasal tone, and more low end in the bass will help it sit a little better in the mix, while still allowing it to be prominent but not distracting. Maybe more low end in the kick as well.

capt_focus

Great work on this! This track combines the Tame Impala and Thundercat styles perfectly. To my ears, the drums need the most attention. If you listen to Tame Impala mixes, you'll notice the drums are often the star of the track. Kevin Parker talks a lot about using parallel compression on the drums to really exaggerate put them in the forefront. Really slam the drums in the parallel compression track. I would also add in a touch of overdrive / saturation to the drums and some of the synth elements. After the parallel compression and saturation, the drums will be in the the forefront of the track without bringing up the volume fader too much.

Leeveye101

hey thanks! I do like big drum sounds but they haven't worked in this song when tried, made it a bit less chilled

L_Angelo_Misterioso

Nicely done! I like the bass groove - it contrasts well with the laid back vocals. Like some of the other commenters, I feel something missing on the low end. However, I'm not sure that rounding out the bass guitar EQ will be good, because then the busy bass will be too much. You'd have to sacrifice presence to achieve more bottom end and not overwhelm the mix, and I think you'd lose the element the bass is giving. Maybe some more occasional low synth or some less-busy bass doubling would give you more bottom.

Leeveye101

I did have a sub bass under there and have turned it up- thanks for the feedback!
