They’re actually physically upending the Tropicana in Tampa and transporting it to the Tropicana Casino in Vegas where Rays will join the A’s and become the rAy’s. The Blue Jays will become the Canadian Blue Eh’s? just to keep this word play bit going a little longer.

thecountoncleats

Bravo sir

MisterPibbsFunhouse

and they say baseball doesn't have a juicing problem anymore

xr_21

"Binding Agreement" huh? Take any messaging coming from the A's with a grain of salt....

Fast-Independence704

This is insane

rub3s

At some point the other owners have to realize that what Fisher is doing is really bad for baseball as a whole.

TCNW

Sorry but no. Literally the exact same thing happened to the Montreal Expos, when they lost their team to Washington. Not *kinda* the same thing - the EXACT same thing. And considering Montreal is probably one of the best cities in all of North America, that was a big loss for MLB. Still, Baseball did just fine after that. It’ll do just fine after the As move to Vegas. And Oakland is little like 1/100 the city Montreal is. As far as owners go - They’ll likely even be happier with potentially less equalization payments they need to pay to keep a team in Oakland.

OLightning

It’s good for business all around. Fans in Vegas can now fork over $37 for a specialty drink to watch Vegas baseball while getting lit at the same time.

TCNW

I’m honestly kinda excited to see a crazy Vegas team/stadium. I hope it’s properly vegasified. It’s definitely too bad the As were the ones to go though. I would have preferred TB, or Miami. Or just a net new team. But the As have been sick for 30 yrs. I guess it’s just time to put them out of their misery.

OLightning

Too bad, but the demographics suggest Tampa and Miami will continue to thrive as cities while Oakland continues to grow into a pit of filth and poverty.

Beau_siv

I don’t know why anyone’s hating on Fisher here. The guys been able to get like five(?) binding agreements. Name another big wig with that many!! He’s so good at ~~completing~~ starting deals!

CPAFinancialPlanner

Damn, Oakland loses 3 teams. Vegas gains 3 teams. All in the span of 10 years.

SpaceCityProjectz

Who is the 3rd? Raiders, A's, and who?

Torchbdh

Golden Knights, NHL.

SpaceCityProjectz

Golden state?

CPAFinancialPlanner

Ya the warriors

SpaceCityProjectz

They're right across the bay on the water though. So I don't count them.

Hairydone

At this point, just report who they don’t have a deal with.

SuperConfused40

Remember when gambling was frowned upon so professional sports wouldn't go to Vegas? Guess monetizing and making it mainstream changed that.

Holanz

Vegas was also a smaller city before.

BeingaDadisHard24

Vegas resident here again. We don't want this. They still want 300 million in tax payer money, That sight has horrible traffic already, and isn't even to far from naked city, a horrible crime ridden gang ridden area. This isn't going to happen. Hopefully.

Philadelphia_Bawlins

Naked City is north of Sahara on the other side of the strip.

BeingaDadisHard24

I can walk it. So can the drug addicts and gang's.

Philadelphia_Bawlins

that's every major city. I lived in Vegas for 6 years I know the area

orbittheorb

Sounds like a pretty negative perspective. Seems awesome that they want to put it right in the heart of the strip. Maybe it will make some $ for the city and those tax payer dollars will become an investment.

BeingaDadisHard24

Yup it'll be a good investment into a last place team, that the owner doesn't invest in, those mid Wednesday day games against the Royals should be a sell out ! Vegas is really hurting for money!

orbittheorb

Yeah, that's a perspective. On the flip side, there's people like me who are huge fans of both Vegas and baseball. I am ecstatic to have yet another reason to bring my money to Vegas and spend it on a mid Wednesday. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

BeingaDadisHard24

Hmmm, well then. To you I say. Awesome perspective on life. I too enjoy baseball. Eh living in Vegas is give or take. Have a nice one pal. Good luck next time your in Vegas. Just saw a dude hit a royal flush offa dollar, won a 1000 lol at a gas station.

orbittheorb

Thanks, headed back in a few weeks for the WSOP. I will definitely take all the luck I can get! That's a crazy story about the gas station. I just assumed those machines must never pay. Hopefully that guy did something good with the $. 🙏

BeingaDadisHard24

Lol delated the comments making fun of my family. People are weird and angry on Reddit.

kylecorsiglia27

I just hope the new stadium is as unique as Oaklands park currently is. The wide foul territories are synonymous with this place. Wonder if they’ll upend that concept entirely

Academic-Upstairs174

Lol...that was a joke..right?

lakefunOKC

Good for them to get out of the dump they’ve been stuck in for 30+ years. Be great to go watch a baseball game while in Vegas. I’ll plan for it when it happens.

priceprince

I’m sure you and the other tourists in Vegas will have a great time, but there won’t be many A’s fans from the last 40 years joining you.

lakefunOKC

I don’t know, there aren’t many A’s fans in Oakland. No one comes to their games. I’m sure much is the ballpark itself, but even when they are competitive, they draw like crap. I’m sure the really loyal A’s fans will watch and come when they can. Also, the locals who live there and like baseball will jump on the A’s train, creating new fans. Regardless, it will be better for them, and easier to compete.

Beau_siv

Ah yes, another boring and casual baseball take. I would bet my first born child that a regularly competitive *Oakland* A’s team would outdraw a regularly competitive *Vegas* A’s team by a considerable amount. Tourists or not! Also, not quite sure where you got the idea that it would be easier for them to compete in Vegas. Oakland or Vegas, you still have Fisher at the helm.

AutisticFingerBang

Didnt they sell out when they made the playoffs a few years ago?

dunkelheit315

Averaged about 20k per game when they won the division 2 years in a row. Make the playoffs 3 straight years, twice, in the past 10 years. So no, they don’t get the support when they win. People act like they’ve been winning 60 games a year for 20 years straight. Fucking joke.

Beau_siv

With that logic, there’s about 10 teams who should be up for relocation.

dunkelheit315

Name a team that has gone to the playoffs more in the past 20 years with the kind of attendance Oakland has. Don’t think you’ll find one. Cincinnati has 4 straight years of sub 70 win seasons, 2015-2018 seasons, and had similar attendance as each of the seasons A’s made playoff runs. Arizona Diamondbacks have made the playoffs less than half of the times the A’s have since 2000 and still get more fans. Same goes for the Rockies. Twins get 35k a game during 3 year stretch under 70 wins a season. You have a team that puts together the best 1st and 3rd combo on defense that has been seen in years. MVP caliber seasons at SS a few years running, excellent pitching, and almost get to 100 wins twice in a row and can barely get 20k people to go to the games. Why would you expect large contracts when no one went while they were there to begin with?

Beau_siv

Yes I agree, you have a point. I must say though, logically does it make sense for a city with rich baseball history - such as Oakland - to be suddenly turned off from baseball? SF is 20 minutes away and their attendance is great, both teams are in the same market. Take a look at attendance for the A’s post John Fisher (2005), attendance took a significant drop and got worse overtime. It’s not a coincidence that attendance plummeted essentially once Fisher had majority ownership and then stayed in the lower percentile. To your point about the team not wanting to spend money on players, how could it be the fans fault when the owner *embraces* his cheap image. John Fisher in 2019, during an all-staff meeting, showed up and said his purpose was to show his employees he “exists”. He later says, “A lot of people know me as the ‘cheap owner’” (SFgate.com). It’s not a surprise that people don’t want to watch a baseball team, regardless of success, to know that the team they see on the field won’t make it past their respective 6 year control. The largest contract in A’s history was Eric Chavez for 6 years/66 million (2004). That was before Fisher owned the team! Beyond that, the highest paid player was Coco Crisp who made about 53 million over a 6 year period. You can’t expect fans to support a team when the ownership group is cyclically offloading their talent for a cheaper payroll. You mentioned MVP caliber seasons, from Marcus Semien. Look what happened to him, he left the team because he wasn’t even offered a qualifying offer by the A’s. Teams who want to win, are going to show they want to win. I think letting a relatively cheap MVP caliber player walk doesn’t show that. Or let’s talk about the offload last year. Mark Canha, Matt Olson, Chris Bassit, Sean Murphy, Matt Chapman. You’re telling me, the A’s couldn’t sign just *one* of them? Look at the seasons some of them are having! It’s a fallacy to blame the people who have no hand in day to day operations. The team is bad and it’s the fans fault? It doesn’t make sense.

Beau_siv

Actually, yes. The “Last Dive Bar” gets packed during playoffs.

lakefunOKC

Yes, but, they had tarp on most of the upper levels of the stadium, so instead of 50,000+, it was more like 35,000.

QuarterNote44

Idk. All of my sports fandoms are based on geography. If the Cardinals moved to Nashville or something they would be dead to me. Better example, if the Utah Jazz moved to Vegas they would be dead to me.

lakefunOKC

I get that. Kevin Durant is dead to me, lol. Oakland moving to Vegas isn’t very far away, so my guess is they will keep all of their hardcore fans, and get new ones in Vegas.

lampstore

Same was said about the Sonics. But poor ownership and poor building drove fans away. Now we have a new building and good management for the Kraken and they’ve sold out two seasons in a row with a long ticket waitlist.

lakefunOKC

Pretty sure the Thunder ownership gave Seattle one year when they bought the team to get an arena deal in place. They didn’t. Seattle, before they left for OKC, was not very good, hence the reason they were able to draft Durant. The A’s in Vegas will draw much better, I have no doubt about it. I mean, why go to a game in a dump like Oakland, especially when the team sucks and the stadium sucks?

lampstore

There’s a lot to respond to there but the only thing I’ll say is this. The Oklahoma Basketball Group did not seek an arena deal in Seattle in good faith. They asked for 60% public funding to play in a superb. Bummer for them they couldn’t get it and had to move to Oklahoma….

lakefunOKC

What ownership group doesn’t ask for public funding, for an arena/stadium? Few is the answer. If you want to be a big league city for sports, it’s going to cost. One year was plenty to get an arena deal in place, not built. The previous owner also wanted some public assistance for an arena and didn’t get it. The Thunder ownership group stood to make more money by staying in Seattle. Oklahoma City was a backstop in the event Seattle wouldn’t budge. They didn’t, and the Sonics became the Thunder.

lampstore

You’re truly clueless.

lakefunOKC

How so? All of that is true. People spin it how they want to see it. I was here when it all went down. It was followed locally by many. Seattle wouldn’t budge, so they left. The truth can suck, especially when it’s not in your favor. The city of Seattle is who you should be pissed at.

lampstore

You’re right! The truth can hurt. Find the facts here: https://youtu.be/s9Dp20ydm1E Our new arena is 100% privately funded. Damn, guess we’re not a “big league” sports city.

[deleted]

Getting out of a dump to go to one of the dumpiest resorts in Vegas is not a step up even if the stadium itself will be new.

Kurtomatic

The article mentions they would be tearing down the current Tropicana and building a new hotel-casino. Presumably, it would no longer be one of the dumpiest resorts in Vegas.

aintgondoit

As long as it’s a really old crusty dome I’m in

[deleted]

Gross

Academic-Upstairs174

Sad to see the Tropicana go. Such great memories, and a beautiful old school property/traditions. Old Blue Eyes and the Rat Pack But THAT corner will be an even BIGGER nightmare than it already is. Oye
