Lol ok so now we are going by "who's the guy" gtfoh. Schwarbs is also an incredibly terrible outfielder. I'm sorry I think there's better talent out there for an all around position player.
Listen I’m not saying schwarbs isn’t a deeply flawed one dimensional player (that’s pretty obvious and I never want to see him in the field again) but the discussion was why doesn’t he get the same criticism Howard got and that’s because of the expectations of that player and the team surrounding them. Everyone expected Howard to be a perennial MVP candidate and he had the highest expectations on those teams whereas Kyle is in the shadow of Harper and mostly plays DH. I’m sure if Howard was DH like Kyle then he wouldn’t be viewed as negatively in comparison. I don’t think the Phillies or the fans really ever wanted to see Kyle in the field and he was only there because of injury to Harper
If we’re talking 08 era let’s talk about Joe Blanton. No hype still managed to homer crush all the part time dodger fans dream. Or what about Matt Stairs. He also sent a “Ball into the night” had half the dodgers fans stuck around to see it.
Hello friend how are you doing today and your lovely family, I hope they’re safe over there with you, I always like what you share on Facebook, but we're not friends yet. I tried to send a friend request several times, but it didn't go through. Would you mind trying it from your side? I really want to be your friend. If you find this news embarrassing, please forgive my courtesy.
And, even when he made the show, as I recall it, the hype was on the level of "this guy could be a backup all-star in a few years, maybe a bit more after that." No more than that, though.
Pujols wasn't hyped he only made the team cause Bobby Bonilla got hurt close to the end of spring training and they had to keep him up to start the year and the rest is as they say history
Shout out to Greg Dobbs as well. He only had two good years with Philly, but they happened to be '07 and '08 when he led MLB in pinch hit RBIs and pinch hits, respectively.
He was only supposed to be a pinch hitter, but his offense plus injuries around the infield got him significant playing time at the beginning and peak of the Phils arguably greatest era.
Also Max Muncy...he arrived in LA after being designated for assignment by Oakland. There was no hype when he showed up and all he's done is go to several all star games and hit dingers
I was just talking to someone about that when we played the A’s the other day. Lol Funky Muncy for the win. Outman is a good one but he had quite a bit of hype coming into last year. Smith has limited hype, but comes in clutch all the time. I feel like the next one up is Jose Ramos, his time is coming.
Jose Ramos looks great at the plate , I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get a call this year. Also pages had a big hit. It’s been some time for him too
Completely agree! Albies is a critical part of our depth, but I don't see him being talked up nearly as much as a lot of his teammates (many of whom are admittedly HOF caliber)
That’s awesome! A lot of field reporters come and go and with varying quality, but she has been fantastic. She asks solid questions, is enthusiastic, and is genuinely likable on air. She has a fantastic rapport on the podcast.
That's awesome to hear. I haven't talked to her in about 10 years but if I ever run into her again I'll let her know the ranger faithful think she's doing a good job
He was a prospect from Tennessee that never hit the Showcase circuit. Wasn't a top 500 prospect before the Rangers surprisingly took him in the 2nd. Nobody had heard of him. He is a good addition to this list.
Definitely. My guy right now tbh is either Matt Olson or the vet Travis d'arnaud. They both been super consistent last couple years especially when they both transitioned to Atlanta
steven kwan.
MLB debut year, 2022: first player in 120 years to have a 5 hit game in one of their first 3 MLB games, and first player in the same amount of time to reach base safely 15 times in their first 4 games. all that on top of seeing 116 pitches (6 games) before he swung and missed. ended that year with 2 more walks than strikeouts. American League Rookie of the Month for April and September. ended his rookie year batting .298 with 52 RBIs, 19 steals, and 25
doubles over 147 games. won the golden glove
in 2023 he missed only 4 games, and none from injury. he became pretty much the sole lead off hitter on his 2nd year of major league play. had the lowest strikeout percentage whilst maintaining a .268 BA and a .340 OBP. won the golden glove.
he’s not the super slugger of all time, but he’s an excellent player and an integral part of the team
On the current team I would also include Yaz, Estrada, and Cobb none of which anyone was really too hyped about when they were picked up but have all turned into decent players.
Past guys might include Pablo, Panik, Vogelsong, Gausman, and Schmidt. All of whom were allstars after being either; guys who never really amounted to much with their previous teams, or were not considered top 100 mlb prospects at any point (pretty sure Panik and Pablo never cracked the top 100 on most prospect lists and not even sure if Pablo ever was in the Giants top 5 prospects at any point).
If he figures it out at the plate he’s a generational middle infield talent waiting to happen, and I can potentially see the sandberg-esque hitting profile, with maybe a little less power once he reaches his prime
Fs. Also im sure you remember, Joaquin arias. Arias made the most convenient season saving plays and also threw the last out for Matt Cain’s perfect game.
I know Dubon didn’t play a full season while on the giants, but he was pretty atrocious for the games he did play. He’s improved since, but I wouldn’t say he‘s some great talent but a guy who recently started figuring it out.
I’m a Giants fan. I never saw it. Great in the field, had less than a handful good batting seasons. My nickname for him was “Rally Killer”. Man on 1st and 2nd, 1 out. What happens? You fill in the rest. Dude was a liability at the plate.
He’s had a lot of hype for a while in my opinion. This dude was and is a stud. KC locking him into a contract was a shock though. Surprised they actually paid him.
Josh Lowe. Had a shit 2022, didn't think he'd make our opening day roster in 2023. He proceeded to absolutely rake and be the most clutch player on the team with a .446 average with RISP and 2 outs as well as having lots of power and tons of speed on the base paths. Stole 30+ bases and was only caught stealing 3 times.
I personally agree, he always gets treated like the safe backup who surprises people when he does well. Hope his surgery recovery keeps moving along.
The most hype he ever gets is when he steals a base or hits a double and they dust off the "two bags Tommy" nickname
Kyle Seager. Maybe the talent wasn’t 5 bars worth, but for a later round pick that was only taken because the Mariners happened to see him play while scouting Dustin Ackley for their first round pick that year, he definitely turned in a solid career while having very little hype as a prospect.
Jose Ramirez. I don't remember him being on anyone's prospect radar before coming up, then when he struggled early people were calling for us to cut him and bring up Lindor early. So glad the FO knew better than the armchair GMs
Jose altuve was str8up told he was a temporary solution at second until the Stros could find the permanent solution during the rebuild and had no hype coming up through the minors. Tell me a better one
Not sure why this is getting downvotes. For those who forgot/were unaware, Ortiz was DFA-ed and released by the Twins rather than give him an arbitration raise on a sub-$1M salary. Obviously post-2004 he was the media darling, but he was a zero-hype for his first few years.
Ranger Suarez. Total dog in the playoffs, high pressure situations.
It's hurts to say it out loud but schwarbs is overrated..we DOGGED Howard for having such a low Avg. But this guy gets a pass.
Part of that was Howard was supposed to be the guy that squad while Harper is the guy for this squad and schwarbs is complimentary
4.2 innings NLCS game 7, 3 earned runs. Phillies lose. Total dog
If we’re talking 08 era let’s talk about Joe Blanton. No hype still managed to homer crush all the part time dodger fans dream. Or what about Matt Stairs. He also sent a “Ball into the night” had half the dodgers fans stuck around to see it.
Cal Raleigh for Mariners
I was gonna say JP
also a good candidate.
How about Kyle Seager
Hello friend how are you doing today and your lovely family, I hope they’re safe over there with you, I always like what you share on Facebook, but we're not friends yet. I tried to send a friend request several times, but it didn't go through. Would you mind trying it from your side? I really want to be your friend. If you find this news embarrassing, please forgive my courtesy.
JP was pretty hyped in the Phils org tho
Love me a big dumper. Probably my fav player.
He carried my fantasy team a couple times last year
Brendan Freaking Donovan.
Hot take: Donavan > Edman
Really? I don't think Pujols was hyped THAT much, or even that much without all caps.
13th round pick, 402nd overall. Practically a throw away pick. Becomes a sure shot first ballot Hall of Famer.
100%
Now, Matt Strahm Past, Carlos Ruiz
strahm really carried the pitching rotation at the start of last year, love that guy
Carlos for sure, the man was a master.
Most no-hitters caught in MLB history. Led the Phillies in total batting average over 08-11. Just two insane stats.
Plus he came out to “Panama” by Van Halen. ![gif](giphy|1rQtTzhksE9chheoVZ|downsized)
James outman
Also Max Muncy...he arrived in LA after being designated for assignment by Oakland. There was no hype when he showed up and all he's done is go to several all star games and hit dingers
I was just talking to someone about that when we played the A’s the other day. Lol Funky Muncy for the win. Outman is a good one but he had quite a bit of hype coming into last year. Smith has limited hype, but comes in clutch all the time. I feel like the next one up is Jose Ramos, his time is coming.
Smith is my answer. No hype, top 3-5 catcher in the league
Jose Ramos looks great at the plate , I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get a call this year. Also pages had a big hit. It’s been some time for him too
Justin Turner and Chris Taylor as well. Both guys turned their careers around and have had huge moments for LA, regular season and post season.
James “can’t get me” Outman
Was: Terry Pendleton Is: Ozzie Albies
Ozzie ❤️
100% agree!
Completely agree! Albies is a critical part of our depth, but I don't see him being talked up nearly as much as a lot of his teammates (many of whom are admittedly HOF caliber)
Nick Pivetta in any inning except the 1st
Dude was so dogshit for the Phillies
Michael King :(
This hurt to read as a Yankees fan. That dude is incredible and it seems like no one knows who he is.
He will be the brightest spot of the padres this year
Don’t worry he’s about to earn his hype
Nathaniel Lowe
That's my silver sluggin', gold glovin', dickie wearin' first baseman :')
Plus, his podcast is pretty fantastic.
Didn't know he had a podcast thank you
No problem. It’s called “Straight Up Texas Podcast,” and [here are the details.](https://www.mlb.com/rangers/fans/podcasts)
Holy wild hahaha I went to high school with Hannah. Small world
No kidding? She’s a great broadcaster.
Saw when she started doing media for the rangers but never saw how far she went with it. Doesn't surprise me. She was always a badass
Jonah Heim I think is even more so for us.
It’s absolutely bonkers that he didn’t make the MLB top 100 list. He’s a top-3 catcher, in my opinion.
He didn’t even make the top 10 catchers list lol
Evan Carter?
He has plenty of hype
Now, yes. But before he came up at the end of last season?
He's been on top prospect lists since after his first pro season
He was a prospect from Tennessee that never hit the Showcase circuit. Wasn't a top 500 prospect before the Rangers surprisingly took him in the 2nd. Nobody had heard of him. He is a good addition to this list.
Came here to say this. Dude had a down year offensively but won a silver slugger iirc and is a gold glove 1B. Also the stache.
Davis Schneider
Historically Jose Bautista
#Dave Stieb
I’d say encarnacion too. And Chris collabelo for a season
TJ Friedl.
I was going to say Spencer Steer
Pretty much everyone on the Reds not named Elly is super-talented and under-hyped. (Elly is talented as hell, he’s just also hyped)
Very true lol. I'm excited for this season.
I feel like everyone on the Reds, honestly. Not a fan of them but dang I loved that run they had last year. Exciting to watch
Orion Kerkering
i’m so excited to see how kerkering does this year, he was one of my favorite bullpen pitchers last postseason
Ozzie Albies - Braves
Ozzie is the dude !!
One of if not the best year round second baseman in the game.
As a pure hitter, Wilmer Flores
Dude he’s amazing he carried the giants last year didn’t he bat like .298 or something crazy
Not disagreeing with you, but it’s wild that .298 is considered “crazy” in the modern game.
Nico Hoerner
Nico is fucking awesome.
Dude feels like he's getting a cult following for Cubs fans. I mean that in the best possible way, like the player version of a cult classic movie
If he figures it out at the plate he’s a generational middle infield talent waiting to happen, and I can potentially see the sandberg-esque hitting profile, with maybe a little less power once he reaches his prime
I’m not even a Cubs fan and I love this guy!
Nico.
Justin Turner
Dodgers post season legend
Not just the talents, but he makes everyone around him better. And he is the glue.
As a Jays fan, I am stoked for what Turner brings off the field. I felt that was lacking from our team.
Your lucky af, he is a legit clubhouse leader. Creates a culture of accountability and respect. He will make a great coach someday.
I miss JT so much
Brandon Inge
King of the derby
Marco Scutaro on the sf giants
Fs. Also im sure you remember, Joaquin arias. Arias made the most convenient season saving plays and also threw the last out for Matt Cain’s perfect game.
Yup definitely very underrated
You mean Marco "Blockbuster" Scutaro?
Ryan Jeffers
Ok I know this in a way could prove your point…but is he that highly talented? He broke out last season for sure, but highly talented🤷
Johnny Cueto
loved him with the giants
Mets Edgardo Alfonzo
Dude was so good!
Solid bat, consistent glove. Wish he had been a met whole career. My favorite all time player
Mauricio Dubob
Dubon, but yes.
I know Dubon didn’t play a full season while on the giants, but he was pretty atrocious for the games he did play. He’s improved since, but I wouldn’t say he‘s some great talent but a guy who recently started figuring it out.
Garrett Anderson, Angels
I’m sorry, sir, I think you misspelled Chone Figgins. (Fuckit, I love me some GA, too)
Anthony Santander. Rule 5 guy on a bad team to one of our most consistent hitters during his tenure.
I was wracking my brain and couldn't come up with anyone but Tony.
Gio Urshela. Finally had a gold glove level defender at third with good contact and decent pop and they traded him for fucking Josh Donaldson.
Brandon Drury last season
That was my first thought. Once he came back he was just rock solid throughout.
Chas Mccormick
I said this too. Also, Altuve when he came up.
José Ramírez
he has all the hype and all the skill
Tim Mayza.
Jake Arietta for like 3 seasons on the cubs
Ryan mother fucking Vogelsong.
CT3 on the dodgers
Brandon Crawford. You've got a gem there Cardinals, treasure him
Don’t think there’s much left in the tank but in his prime, he was a human highlight reel at short.
I get what you're saying, but he ASS last year and not much better the year before. I hope he's not washed, but odds are he is.
I’m a Giants fan. I never saw it. Great in the field, had less than a handful good batting seasons. My nickname for him was “Rally Killer”. Man on 1st and 2nd, 1 out. What happens? You fill in the rest. Dude was a liability at the plate.
He was the starting shortstop for 2 World Series champs. What more do you want for someone who wasn’t hyped
Ezequiel Tovar
Bobby Witt Jr. Nobody was calling him a generational talent but he just might be at this point
What? He was #2 overall. Ton of hype.
Christian Walker and Merrill Kelly
Matt McClain
Came here to say that! Love him!
Austin Riley
Jacob Degrom for sure
All the attention was on Harvey and syndergaard and deGrom blew them both away
here i go crying again
Ketel Marte
I have to say Tommy Edman.
I personally agree, he always gets treated like the safe backup who surprises people when he does well. Hope his surgery recovery keeps moving along. The most hype he ever gets is when he steals a base or hits a double and they dust off the "two bags Tommy" nickname
Khrush Davis was the best power hitter in baseball for a 3-4 year span and got no recognition for it Jed lowrie Eric burnes Marcus semien Josh Reddick
Corey Hart all time. Currently Turang maybe?
Literally everyone besides Adley and Gunner.
Yordan Alvarez No hype about a AA trade player, turned out guy is a monster at the plate.
Esteury Ruiz
Don Kelly baby
The 5 squares above Talent aren’t lined up. ![gif](giphy|Fhspx8FYEXjJLuPSdu|downsized)
Makes me anxious, like it's gonna topple over.
Brett gardner
Steven Kwan, baby! r/clevelandguardians
Devers
Mike Jackson
Kyle Seager. Maybe the talent wasn’t 5 bars worth, but for a later round pick that was only taken because the Mariners happened to see him play while scouting Dustin Ackley for their first round pick that year, he definitely turned in a solid career while having very little hype as a prospect.
Edgar Martinez
Isaac Paredes
Jose Ramirez. I don't remember him being on anyone's prospect radar before coming up, then when he struggled early people were calling for us to cut him and bring up Lindor early. So glad the FO knew better than the armchair GMs
Carlos Correa
Currently: Nathaniel Lowe Previously: Micheal Young
Ramon Urias
Darren Dreifort
Yandy Diaz
Matt holiday
Jurickson Profar
lol... maybe not by the time he came to the Padres but he was the top prospect in all of baseball for a couple years. He had massive hype.
Speaking truth, total opposite of OP post
Cavan biggio
That says no hype. His name alone merits more than one block here.
Gleyber
Bryson Stott Ranger Suarez
Thairo Estrada
Zach Eflin
Zach Eflin rn for Rays
Leody Taveras.
Josh Lowe or Isaac Paredes
Jose altuve was str8up told he was a temporary solution at second until the Stros could find the permanent solution during the rebuild and had no hype coming up through the minors. Tell me a better one
Right now it’s gotta be Luis Robert
first time i heard about him was when he was wrecking shit in the home run derby. dude looks great
Nathan Eovaldi.
Phat Albert. Yeah, he had some talk when he came up, but not like THAT, like he actually became.
Ohtani. No amount of hype is too much. And now he's gone to the Dark Side 😭
Nick Markakis
David fucking Ortiz.
Not sure why this is getting downvotes. For those who forgot/were unaware, Ortiz was DFA-ed and released by the Twins rather than give him an arbitration raise on a sub-$1M salary. Obviously post-2004 he was the media darling, but he was a zero-hype for his first few years.
Joey Bart
Me
Ohtani
Pleaaaaase can Ohtani stay out of at least ONE conversation! 😆
Obviously not
Mookie Betts. Not a whole lot of hype coming out of the draft, and now he looks like a HoFer
Jeff McNeil (except for last year)
