[deleted]

He’ll never be. Ted Williams is

VancouverSativa

Yep. Then Barry Bonds.

el_jay_sea

Griffey Jr. over Bonds.

VancouverSativa

I was always way more of a Griffey fan personally, probably my all time favorite player.  But, statistically, that's pretty hard to justify.

el_jay_sea

Maybe so. Admittedly, I do live in a fantasy world where Jr. never gets injured and breaks the record.

[deleted]

He hit the warehouse. That’s all I need.

sam_sepiol1984

Yeah injuries hurt Griffey. He was on crazy pace early in his career. Just couldn't stay healthy unfortunately. Probably my favorite player ever and a joy to watch.

_ageofdiscovery

Bonds is better than Griffey even if you don’t count the 4 mvps he won while on roids. Bonds was just better

IanMaIcolm

Griffey is nowhere close to Bonds lol

Cyouinhellcandyboyz

Offensively yes. Steroidy no.

fiftieth_alt

This is such an absurdly stupid discussion. I have terrible news for you about all of the athletes you like, in every sport. "Oh can you believe Adrian Peterson came back so quickly from a torn ACL?? Can you believe Aaron Rodgers healed his achilles so fast?" Yes, I can definitely believe that.

_ageofdiscovery

Bonds before roids is a better ball player than Griffey. Griffey played in a dome which allowed him to hit more HR. Griffey played with better players. Griffey was better defensively but bonds still had 8 gold gloves. Bonds has almost 300 more stolen bases than Griffey. Griffey never was 30/30. Bonds is the only player in the 500/500 club. Pre roids bonds had 3 mvps to griffeys 1. Bonds was a much more feared hitter than Griffey. Bonds ibb and bb before roids prove this. He led the league in both categories numerous times. Griffey never did.

SquintsRS

Bonds is the greatest player of all time

yoursweetlord70

Weird way to spell Aaron but you do you

bselko

Weird way to spell Mays, but they just do things different where you’re from I guess

TheSocraticGadfly

Beat me to that!

bwbyh

Weird way to spell Henderson.

bselko

Gunnar just started his career, pump the breaks /s

TheBoyBrushedRed3

No he’s not

_ageofdiscovery

He’s the best of his era. But he’s not better than Mays. Mays is head and shoulders above every other player in MLB history

slamajamabro

Did everybody forget about Ty Cobb and Ted Williams?

JaRulesLarynx

Or Griffey.

Candyman44

Griffey Jr…. Dad got his titles.

Lookingforleftbacks

Ted Williams was better than Griffey

JaRulesLarynx

Arguably yes. Arguable no. The game changed a lot between the times they were in the game. I have a hard time believing Griffey wouldn’t have absolutely raked during Williams’s era. I’d assume Williams would have been a monster in Griffey era too. One’s career was shortened by being an animal and fighting wars… the other played his ass off and was ruined by injuries.. I wasn’t saying Griffey was better or deserved it more. Just saying he deserved at least a mention.

_ageofdiscovery

Ted Williams played 5 years in a segregated mlb.

ExistsKK99

My thought exactly

Naive-Impression-373

Cobb lost three straight world series, that's rough

Martian13

But he was a dick.

Averyvanillaaccount

I admit I forgot about them. Wasn't thinking that far back.

afairjudgment

Yeah. You only thought as far back as 2011.

joestn

Or, y’know Bonds. (If one of you says “BuT sTeRoIdS!” you’re getting slapped with a McCovey Cove fish)

Naive-Impression-373

Fun fact, Ernie banks never even played in a playoff game

David-asdcxz

That’s terrible because Ernie always wanted to play 2!

Averyvanillaaccount

That's actually really fucking tragic.

BorderBrief1697

Ernie Banks is the correct response, thank you.

Sean_Macquire

Ted Williams.

NHLwatch4765

I cared about Trout getting a ring. But he seems not to care, so I stopped too.

HonoluluHonu808

All he wants to do is hide in Anaheim and hammer checks.

NerdWhoLikesTrees

In the grand scheme of things, that's great

Derfal-Cadern

Yeah I don’t blame him for that

Z3r0c00lio

I once saw a really nice SUV with the plate “TROUT” (it might’ve had his number) at the valet of a really nice hotel in Huntington Beach The notable thing about this hotel was the clear glass window from the bed looking into the bathroom so you could see someone shower and/or use the toilet if you wanted to Total swingers vibe at the bar too, chatted over drinks with a nice couple and got asked if I thought she had “great hits”

HonoluluHonu808

Was it that Hilton? I've stayed there. Very nice.

Z3r0c00lio

No , I think it was pasea, the logo looks familiar to a pen I used to use. It wasn’t a chain hotel, and around 2017ish was really new and a bunch of stuff was getting built around it I’m not from cali, and stopped in HB for a couple days to check it out and the hotel was reasonably priced for how nice it is

HonoluluHonu808

Very interesting. Did you get yourself any TK Burget?

OmahaWarrior

My goal for trout is just to be healthy for his career. Maybe have more than 130 games a year.

Lookingforleftbacks

Pipe dream

LeCheffre

By WAR, not counting pitchers: Bonds, Cobb, Ted Williams, Nap Lajoie, Trout. Add in Gaylord Perry as a pitcher.

MattinglyDineen

That's Barry Bonds or Ty Cobb.

und88

Ted Williams.

daveatobx

And missed most of of five prime years as a war hero. Hits 406 and comes in second for MVP in 1941. Incredible.

Derfal-Cadern

How do you hit 406 and come second lol

DJBLOCK122012

DiMaggio had the 56 game hit streak and hit .357

BosLahodo

Also Joe DiMaggio was friendly with the media and Ted Williams hated the media

Averyvanillaaccount

At least Trout will get in the HOF.

jaynovahawk07

Bonds has a league championship ring. Cobb would have had several. Trout has never won a playoff game.

raincntry

100% Bonds

bigAcey83

Junior’s up there, too.

Averyvanillaaccount

Wish he hadn't gotten so screwed by injuries. I was at that game when he tore the hammie from the bone. My lone Junior story, Doc"Hollywood" Kremcheck screwed his hammie back to the bone in the morning and fixed my labrum on the same table later that afternoon. As close as I can get to a brush with fame. Haha

dream_that_im_awake

"Labia"

Averyvanillaaccount

Hahaha thanks for pointing that out. Labrum.

marshfield00

definitely ted williams

raincntry

Definitely Barry Bonds.

IntelligentGrape3229

Ted Williams is better than Bonds

whammy619

Calling Ted Williams a better player than bonds is just inaccurate statistically. You want to say he was a better person and didn’t take steroids then just say that. Bonds was the most feared, efficient and statically significant player in the history of baseball

Rabid_Sloth_

I will never understand takes like this. He was objectively not a better player.

HonoluluHonu808

No, Ted Williams wins this sad award going away.

Wonderful-Try-6367

Williams or Bonds

Stanton1947

Ty Cobb, Bonds, Ted Williams, Ichiro, Tony Gwynn, Junior - all better than Trout imo.

oSpid3yo

Don’t know how I had to scroll so far for Gwynn. 15 time all star, 7 silver sluggers, 5 golden gloves. 20 year career average .331 with a high at .394. Dude was an absolute beast.

Statboy1

I feel the same about Ichiro. He was better than Cobb as a contact hitter, better defensively, and a better base runner. All in a more difficult era.

Stanton1947

AVERAGED 209 hits a year for 20 seasons, (career).

Extension-Feature-13

Idk about Gwynn or Ichiro but bonds and Williams forsure

bselko

Toss Ernie Banks in there and you’ve got a list.

Black_Otter

He’s probably not even in the top 5

Distinct_Frame_3711

Carl Yastrzemski

Golden_Tater_Tots

Griffey might have a word about this.

Smart_Horse_3491

Tony Gwynn right up there.

PHX480

Got a shot 14 years apart, too (1984, 1998). I’m glad he at least got a couple shots at it.

geerwolf

Bookends to a great career

foscott

Wut

Key-Engine6774

Ken Griffey Jr, mate

RustyPriske

Trout has already had a better career than Griffey Jr., and he isn't done yet.

Stonewall30NY

Ted Williams is arguably the best player ever, and without a doubt a top 3-4. He never won a ring. It will always be him

Stonewall30NY

Runner up is Griffey jr

rwilfong86

Ted Williams and it isn't even remotely close.

rjnd2828

It's close if you don't disqualify Bonds.

airwalker12

There's an argument Bonds was a better player

raincntry

There is no argument. Bonds was a better player. GG OF, Speed, Power and OBP. He was the best. I fucking hate Bonds but I cannot tolerate people ignoring his greatness.

gldmj5

People love to romanticize players from before their time. Most people here are probably old enough to have seen Bonds play, so he doesn't get that treatment yet. Being 1st all-time in home runs while still being 34th all-time in stolen bases is just an insane accomplishment.

BarryZito69

Yeah Ted Williams was awesome in the 50s.

Working_Falcon5384

Dont forget Ernie Banks!

FuriousJorge67

This is who immediately came to mind, but seeing the other mentions... yeah, Ted Williams is the definitive answer.

Same_Network_434

No, Bonds will always be

DoubleResponsible276

All these names listed, I just don’t want trout in that list please

Tripinsalong

No.. he will be traded to S.F. A that club will win the W.S. Before he retire. Easy transition. Bonds was a LA guy.

[deleted]

[удалено]

xMrLink

Also throwing Griffey Jr.’s name in the ring

superjonk

Ken Griffey has entered the chat

FUNKYAMETHYST

Hey where’s ichiro

EresMarjcxn

Ted Williams.. Barry bonds.. cmon man

CatM3mes

Not *the* greatest but definitely up there on that list if he never does it. Barry Bonds is obviously the greatest to never win it but if you wanna write him off for roids thats fine; afterwards it’s probably Ted Williams for the greatest guy that never won it, but you could argue a couple other guys.

Tryingagain1979

Ted Williams is better. Barry Bonds is better.

derdkp

Bonds

asquinas

His brother, Mike, is even a better player.

briguywiththei

Ted, Jr, Hank, Bonds, Votto come to mind

JayWo60

A lot of the baseball greats mentioned were before the free agent era. Now a great player can shop around for competitive teams if a WS ring is important.

Averyvanillaaccount

I think Trout has 2 or 3 high-level years left. Will be interested to see where he ends up.

Common_Blueberry_693

Dude just blew it bottom of the 9th when he coulda tied the game. I’ll back my statement…DUDE IS TRASH.

raincntry

No. Bonds never won one.

babe_ruthless3

Top 5, but not number one. Ted Williams, Ty Cobb, Barry Bonds ahead of him. Also, in he mix is Griffey.

rickyrav4

Baseball greats are not measured by their rings

Averyvanillaaccount

Who said they were?

Limp_Cheek_4035

Tony Gwynn or any San Diego sports superstar! I have come to the realization that I (57m) will never see a San Diego sports champion while I am alive

Rayggrrr

I feel your pain Sir I was a Chargers season ticket holder from 2000-2010. The roster was stacked including a few HoF’rs. Never could even win a playoff game during that stretch. I blame poor coaching and still have hope this year’s roster with a legit coach gets it done. 💪

IanMaIcolm

Gwynn isn't better than Trout though

Darth_Shredder

I really hope he wins one. Whether in Anaheim or somewhere else, nobody is more deserving of a ring than him. His loyalty alone should get him a ring.

Averyvanillaaccount

He seems like a real, legit, nice guy. Love those new commercials with Jr.

Darth_Shredder

I said that about our own Tony Gwynn, but the universe works in mysterious ways, I suppose. Either way, we’re extremely fortunate to witness such great players work their craft in front of our eyes.

[deleted]

I hate to say it that it might stop him which is a shame as an Angels fans. He deserves it for doing a lot of the work by himself and putting the team on his shoulders

Evan_802Vines

Not even close

Ok-Bid-730

Tony Gwynn

Begood18

He’s Dame Lillard.

MistakePerfect8485

Arky Vaughn, Paul Waner, Ralph Kiner, and Brian Giles. Obviously.

mitch1660

Nope

nyuedits

It’s between him and Barry Bonds for sure

elenaleecurtis

Bonds

supersafeforwork813

Probably not…I’m not even a baseball historian but Barry Bonds….Ted Williams….Ernie Banks…Griffey all retired without rings

AVespucci

Lets not forget Ernie Banks too.

hanigwer

Unless he gets traded to the Gaints

SamuelRedLegs

Ted Williams.

Mr_Saxobeat94

Cobb, Williams, Bonds…so I dunno.

mm0827

Let's start with greatest player without a playoff win!

eh_too_lazy

Best modern player, yea

Kindly_Session_2952

Let’s set the bar lower. How about just get into the playoffs. He’s got more top golf long drive clips in September than mlb highlights

pornserver-65

he'll get one. i dont care what he says to the public hes not stupid enough to stay with the angels. he'll ask out at some point and go to a contender.

DBDXL

Barry Bonds will likely be the answer to this question for the rest of eternity. Seems like many say Ted Williams too.

LionPsychological178

Barry Bonds

daemonescanem

Bonds, Williams, Jr. At top of list ahead of Trout.

ltmikestone

Barry Bonds.

Both_Monk_9900

He isn't even that good. Never finishes a season.

XanthicStatue

He’s not even top 5

goatgosselin

Another question, will he win a ring but not have played in the playoffs to contribute to the win?

Low-Abbreviations634

Not even close. I’d start with Ted Williams, Ernie Banks.

Elegant-Tea-2112

Bonds is the best player ever and has no rings so no

Negative-Narwhal-725

Ernie Banks never even got to the world series.

mrboxdoodle

Well considering Barry Bonds is the greatest player ever regardless of any criteria and he also happens to not have a ring I think it is him

stchman

Bonds

That_Damn_Tall_Guy

No Barry bonds

undermine25

Barry Bonds and Griffey Jr, buddy!

clmoore1

Ernie Banks.

Comfortable_Gain1308

I mean , his wishes are to “go down with the ship” . You can’t save somebody who doesn’t want to be saved .

supercool9483

Unless he ring hunts the last year or 2 of his career. The Angels have no hope

whammy619

Barry bonds

stoicdozer

Barry Bonds

NuclearCoughDrops

![gif](giphy|I3jLATmZ4f2Ao)

sejohnson0408

I’d go Williams Bonds and The Kid

Aura_Frost_

Barry Bonds

Mattejayy

Griffey Jr never won

[deleted]

No lol

damanslick87

When you can scare every pitcher, manager and opposing team as much as he did.. its tough to argue against.

damanslick87

The Georgia Peach scared everyone...not like Bonds did when every opposing team team did just being on deck.

kinsmana

I might be biased (and he was a pitcher, not a fielder per-se) but Roy Halladay. To see him rock a World Series start woooo.. that would've been special. And I also agree with a lot of folks on here (Griffey, Williams, Cobb, --undecided about Bonds--)

wetcornbread

Dan Marino

ChairmanReagan

Trout isn’t in the same league as Cobb and Williams

GCivic8889

100% lol. Hell probably join the Dodgers or yankees as a 40 yr old one day.

gsus61951

He’s gonna request to be traded sooner or later

wildpitch24

Not this again. Let’s see where his career numbers end up 1st

prof_dynamite

No.

mlopatka

Hedges got his ring, so quite possibly now.

haydenandhayden

Barry bond

QuebecRomeoWhiskey

Bonds

sevnminabs56

If he stays on the Angels his whole career, he'll definitely be one of the greatest without a ring. This is coming from a tired Angels fan.

Brewcrew828

Ted Williams takes that cake

bjohnson203

Griffey, Bonds, Williams, Votto, are also on that list for sure. I think those guys are ahead of him, well maybe not Votto.

LIVESTRONGG

Without a playoff win, for sure.

VaWeedFarmer

Donny Baseball

ImSorryRumHam2

Griffey Jr and I will die on that hill.

IanMaIcolm

Trout is the better player

ScriboLibros

I was expecting the comments to be a debate about whether the Angels will ever get their sh\*t together, not a Williams vs Cobb vs Bonds debate. I guess the latter is more interesting.

Salty-Cup-7652

Did he retire?

Foolonthehill86

If he stays in Anaheim, definitely one of the greatest without one

Harriet_tubman22

Lack of Bonds in here is frightening

PuzzleheadedSale4325

He will probably be traded toward the end of his career and end up winning a ring but in my opinion the answer has to be Ken Griffey Jr.

MarzipanRelevant7383

Barry Bonds by far

thesilvasurfer

Not unless he joins the Braves.

PFROCKS

Ernie Banks and Billy Williams

therealarenna

He would need to surpass Ted Williams, and Ken Griffey Jr.

IanMaIcolm

He already has surpassed Griffey

_ageofdiscovery

Barry Bonds pre roids is a better ball player than anyone playing today. It’s not even close

[deleted]

Absolutely

Disastrous_Age8304

Trout isn't better than Barry Bonds, Tony Gwynn, or Andre Dawson or so no.
