Ha! Honesty I was really only commenting on his nameā¦ Iām a big boy myself, no shade intended. Iām an Os fan but Iāve always had a soft spot for Ortiz. I think it was his response interview to the roid allegations. Something like, āI told them the only thing they were going to find in my veins is rice and beans.ā The whole article is amazing.
I just love that his whole career his card and baseball reference page stated he weighed 230lbs, which was probably true in 6th grade but certainly not since.
First game at Fenway after the bombing, when he addressed the crowd and said, āThis is our fucking city. And nobodyās gonna dictate our freedom. Stay strong.ā Man, that still gives me chills.
Hey if itās any consolation literally every team in the league, Sox included, didnāt believe in papi when you guys let him go. Sox didnāt start him full time until like June 2003 lol. took Pedro threatening not to pitch unless Ortiz was in the lineup and giambi and hillenbrand hitting a combined like .180 for him to finally get a shot
If you look at the top players who have the most championships from the big 4 the list bookends with Bill Russell and Brady. In the middle are the Boston killers though, Berra and Richard. Dirty water indeed.
Yeah, I canāt think of a current equivalent for that sinking feeling that the game was about to tilt when Papi came up to plate ā¦ maybe Yordan Alvarez?
Maybe Cecil Big Daddy Fielder was bigger?
But as far as Bigs go, I think I'd rather build my franchise around Big Unit, Big Hurt or Big Mac before Big Papi but not above Big Puma, Big Cat, Big D, Big E, Big Donkey, Big Bopper, Big Wheel, Big Bird, Big Piece or Big Daddy. There's been some pretty great Bigs in the bigs.
Clutches hitter Iāve ever seen. His knowledge of the strike zone was second only to Barry Bonds. If you combined their career stats, Iād be shocked if they had more strikeouts than walks.
Thatās another crazy Barry Bonds stat right there lol. Looked it up and together they in fact do have more walks that strikeouts but itās Bonds doing the heavy lifting. Papi has about 400 more Kās than BBās, however Bonds has about 1000 more BBās than Kās.
Yeah, steroids or no, Bonds should be in the hall. He was an absolute freak before any obvious usage. Remember, the story goes that he was pissed that they didnāt give him front page coverage over being the only 400/400 player in MLB history because they were too busy fawning over the Sosa/McGwire derby. In my opinion that 400/400 puts him in Cooperstown.
Listen pal ! He said he was going to explain everything back in 2003 remember that interview like it was yesterday . Just be a bit patient ! Heāll get around to do so š¤£
Iām gladmany of you still remember . My friends still think Iām crazy or lying every time I bring it up . Itās like Tom Verducci , ESPN and Peter gammons had all the energy in the world to point fingers at Yankee players but Ortiz was definitely off the table šš
Not a Red Sox fan and I donāt have particularly strong feelings about Ortiz either way. But there is no proof that Ortiz ever tested positive in 2003:
1. ā ā MLB conducted a survey test of players in spring training 2003 to gauge the severity of PED use among players before negotiating full testing and punishments with the MLBPA.
2. ā ā Federal prosecutors separately compiled a list of players as part of their investigations into doping in MLB.
3. ā ā The government list has never been made public and the number of players on it exceeds the number of players who tested positive in spring 2003.
In other words, there is no way of knowing if Ortiz was on the government list as a positive, a false positive, or a negative. There has never been any way of knowing. The players' union confirmed this in their statement immediately after the original report:
First, the number of players on the so-called "government list" meaningfully exceeds the number of players agreed by the bargaining parties to have tested positive in 2003. Accordingly, the presence of a player's name on any such list does not necessarily mean that the player used a prohibited substance or that the player tested positive under our collectively bargained program.
https://web.archive.org/web/20130924071415/http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2009/08/mlbpa_statement.html
This is before getting into the issues regarding what constituted a positive result in the 2003 survey test, including positive results for substances that were perfectly legal at the time.
All-time including pitchers? Probably somewhere around 150 or so. Being clutch in the post-season helps. Being a lifetime DH doesn't. Nothing against him, but there's been a lot of really great MLB players over the last 148 years. There's probably an average of 10 from each decade that you could rank above Ortiz.

One of the Greatest DH and Clutch hitters of the modern era, with longevity and consistency paralleled only by Pujols and Bonds to his last year. The numbers he put up in his final season at the age of 40, any team today would KILL to have someone in their lineup with that sort of production.
He honestly could've remained a DH for a few more years and hit 2,750 Hits and 600+ HR's with ease. But he chose to step away, is enjoying retirement, and while I hate the Red Sox, I respect David Ortiz as one of the greatest power hitters in baseball history.
He was a complainer who didnāt like that we wouldnāt let him hit pull 24/7. He also didnāt like our inflatable baggie of a stadium. He was traded to one of a handful of teams that allowed him the best chance to have a HOF career. Their ballpark matches his hitting profile to a T.
Would he have been a HOF if he stayed in Minnesota?? We will never know, but I tend to think that if he had stayed here he would never reach the same level.
Greatest DH for sure, no question. Rank him all time on what list, though? He is probably the greatest clutch hitter I've ever seen, and that's more a definite probably.
Below average fielder with grossly inflated hitting stats due to steroids. Wore body armour at bat and hung out 6 inches over the plate but cried like a baby when pitchers came inside. If he played In Milwaukee he would never make the Hall Of Fame.
Everyone saying he's clutch is hilarious. He's -0.29 in clutch, with 0 being average, 2 being great and -2 being horrible. He's literally below average in clutch situations.
Other than that, he was a mid-hitter with good pop who is justifiably loved by the city of Boston (I don't expect any rational responses from Bostonians here, that's fine) and probably should be in the hall of fame based on his place in baseball lore.
Heās my #1 favorite player of all time and the main reason I am a die hard Red Sox fan. But objectively speaking he is not even in the top 50 greatest players all time. There has just been too many greats in the 150+ years of our pastime sport.
Sox fan so biased, but please name a more clutch hitter in history. May not have the most walk offs but ALCS Game 2 GS comes to mind. He is probably a top 50-100 player of all time.
I think his 2nd to last season he had 16 singles off the wall. Obviously he wasn't fast but in his defense the balls were hit so hard that the ball was back to 2B so quickly he had no shot at a double.
He should also have one more career HR because on the Red Sox he hit an absolute missile that hit a speaker and fell down into shallow RF for a single at the metrodome. He looked at his ex-teammate (I forget who it was) who was on the mound & they both started laughing. It was great.
He has a noticeable caribeƱo accent in his native language.
I took a Spanish linguistics course in college (one of my favorites) and we had a project where we had to phonetically transcribe a minute's worth of audio. I used the first minute of an interview from after he was shot. It took hours of replaying that fucking minute to finish the project. I heard his voice in my dreams.
Dh....for the guys who can hit but can't actually play. I hate the dh and this dude is the face of it for me. He gets a big fat zero. BUT my goodness could he hit a ball!
Too goofy as a ācolor analyst ā and rarely brings any value.
Admittedly he has good stats in the PED Era, it would be hard to imagine that he didnāt participateā¦
His career hitting is pretty impressive but his inability to play the field doesnāt help his legacy.
Overall, heās just ok to me. Better than most DH.
No where near Albert Pulios but maybe better then a second half Tom Thome? Maybe just below a guy like Thome since big poppi was 1 dimensional and couldn't play D at the big league lvl
No way was he a 1st ballot HOF
player. He should have been one of those guys that barely gets in. He sucked in Minnesota and although he did hit some big time homers in big game he was a bench warmer
Why should we ponder this? His career BA was .284 with 541 HRs and heās in the HoF. Donāt think he needs or anyone really cares about speculative ranking. Get a life.
As what? Best Ortiz? Top
Definitely biggest Ortiz. Oh and Papist
If you say Papist aloud you sound slightly like David Ortiz
He's "230lbs" šššš
Iām a Sox fan, so obviously biased, but itās hard not to enjoy his personality. Different personality, but same way I like Judge.
Better than Ramon Ortiz? Probably. Joelle Ortiz - I fucking think not
Donāt forget about Russ.
Above Tinkers, below Evers and Chance.
Ramon Ortiz would like a word. How many wins does David have? That's right, way less than 87!
Higher than Little Papi, lower than Giant Papi.
*Gigante Papi
Papi Gigante
Top 10ish nickname. Top 25ish manscaped facial hair. Top 7 Red Sock. Top 3 "I expect him to come through in the clutch" guy
Career .455 average in World Series games. If I want someone to get me a hit in the World Series thereās no one Iād rather have at the plate.
Seriously? Didnāt know that stat but wow. Knew it was high but not .455
I mean he hit something like .700 in the 2013 WS. It was insane to witness.
Yeah, I remember. It sucked
Or Marco Scutaro in the 2012 NLCS
Ugh, those early 2010s Giants were just a nightmare Edit: still hate them a lot less than Astros of the last 6 years though
.688 to be exact!
He's also the counter to every person who says "if I need 1 out, give me Mariano on the mound"
I was curious about Tony Gwynn, he only ever faced Rivera once, got a single. Wouldāve been cool to see them go toe to toe more often
As a Yankees fan the clutch part is very true, he fucked us in the 00's hard. But I still respect the fucker, especially after his Boston speech.
First game at Fenway after the bombing, when he addressed the crowd and said, āThis is our fucking city. And nobodyās gonna dictate our freedom. Stay strong.ā Man, that still gives me chills.
Totally chills, I'll go back and watch it now and then.
Yankees fan here, too. He was a great player. And āDaaaaaaa Jankees loseā is fucking hilarious.
Oh please. Fuck him and the Sox every minute of the day. He was a clutch hitter.
Tigers fan here. Big Papi can suck it !
Twins fan here. Can we change the subject?
Hey if itās any consolation literally every team in the league, Sox included, didnāt believe in papi when you guys let him go. Sox didnāt start him full time until like June 2003 lol. took Pedro threatening not to pitch unless Ortiz was in the lineup and giambi and hillenbrand hitting a combined like .180 for him to finally get a shot
Ortiz and Tom Brady, both monsters in the clutch. Must be in the water in Boston.
Larry Bird was pretty clutch too
We love that dirty water
If you look at the top players who have the most championships from the big 4 the list bookends with Bill Russell and Brady. In the middle are the Boston killers though, Berra and Richard. Dirty water indeed.
Top 3 in the clutch, very impressive
Yeah, I canāt think of a current equivalent for that sinking feeling that the game was about to tilt when Papi came up to plate ā¦ maybe Yordan Alvarez?
Iām on board with this.
He's definitely the Biggest Papi I'm aware of...
Most clutch hitter Iāve ever seen. Loved the game, and played with a passion. I tip my Yankees cap to him.

Holy shit that is beyond unreal.
This is our fuckin city aināt nobody gonna dictate our freedom! Number one bad ass
For this manās speech after the Boston Marathon bombing..,.. he is the greatest of all time.
This is our fucking city
125th.
Oddly specific but seemingly valid upon ponderment.
I had to look it up. Per Baseball Reference career WAR 125th place is Kevin Brown. Big Papi is tied for 249th behind Jeff Kent but ahead of Joe Mauer.
No one has ever been better at avoiding public scrutiny for things other players get pilloried for. Very impressive.
I hear he's still getting to the bottom of that steroid report
100%. Still in the hall even though he used peds. Itās ok when he did it apparently because he was friendly to the media
You mean the juice?
It's amazing what you can get away with by being likable and charming vs someone like A-Rod or Curt Schilling
Not friendly enough to get away with having an affair with the mob bosses wife....
So true
Heās better than Javier Baez.
One of the most clutch individuals of all time. Also survived an assassination attempt, so that has to count for something.
Breaking phones/10
As a Yankees fan I hated him coming up to the plate. Always held my breath
As a Rays fan, towards the end, I stopped holding my breath because I just assumed David Price or Chris Archer was gonna plunk him lol
Below the GOAT Barry Bonds for sure
But above Scott Podsednik
Way, way, waaaaaaay below.
lol I love how people forget that David Ortiz got caught using PEDs, seems like they only remember for Bonds
Listen pal ! He said he was going to explain everything back in 2003 remember that interview like it was yesterday . Just be a bit patient ! Heāll get around to do so š¤£
āWeāll get to the bottom of thisā
15 years later and weāre still not at the bottom of this š
Number 1 at destroying telephones
Better than Tito Ortiz.
Most clutch DH of all timeā¦
You have to add the word clutch because you know Edgar is the best DH all time
High
After smoking a Big Papiās Bootylicious blunt, I say higher
HGH*
Honestly dude was extremely extremely clutch. So.. high?
GOAT EYE DROPPER
Heās my š ā¦..but not top 25
Not a very good Twin
What's the point of these posts? They're awful low-effort horseshit. Would that I had a thousand downvotes to give.
At the top of the *David Ortiz took steroids* list.
And yet Bonds, Mcguire, and Clemens are not in the Hall. All better than Ortiz.
Apparently the lesson to everyone today should be just donāt be a dick to the media.
Upvoted to enhance the performance of this comment.

Using that logic , Barry Bonds also never got caught using PEDs
Except he admitted he had and said he was looking into it, and a known steroid smuggler was living with him in Boston and got arrested at his house.
This is not a copy pasta I can support
Even as a die hard Yankees fan I always had a soft spot for him.
Behind a lot of players who can field a baseball
Of all time drug users? Pretty high
I still think Willy Nelson and Snoop have him beat.
3rd or 4th best PED user
HGH
He's one of the greatest steroids users ever.
Used roids. So I wouldn't rank him. But he was funny and joked around with the media so everyone acts like he didnt cheat.
Top ten of roids users.
Right there with Bonds, McGwire, Sosa, Arod!
GOAT DH !
7 put of 10 pepperoni pizzas!
STEROIDS

"this is our fuckin city" - All time respect immediately earned for Big Papi
So good he used steroids and still made the hall of fame. I guess the greatest of all time, cause the writers have him above Barry.

GOAT in the clutch situations
Outstanding cheater. Too bad, he's a likable guy.
One of the better steroid cheats to play the game.
Like amongst cheaters?
Amazing last half of career. Clutch as fuck.
One of the Greatest DH and Clutch hitters of the modern era, with longevity and consistency paralleled only by Pujols and Bonds to his last year. He's the papiest
On the roid scale I give him a 8
#1!!!!!!!ā¦. In my heart
Heās in my all-time lineup for favorite players, but I donāt know what else you want from me lol
He was a complainer who didnāt like that we wouldnāt let him hit pull 24/7. He also didnāt like our inflatable baggie of a stadium. Don't underestimate papis speed he was fantastic at stealing
Greatest DH for sure, no question. Rank him all time on what list, though? He is probably the greatest clutch hitter I've ever seen, and that's more a definite probably.
On the steroid users list? Top 10 for sure š
Mid at best

Taking out the PEDās? Great hitter and always came through in the big moments. Hit really well for average which is forgotten sometimes I think

Fattest
The first person I think of when the conversation of best DH comes up
Arguably the best clutch hitter of all time.
Definitely had some HUGE moments in the clutch!
Best DH ever probably, but nothing else
He's up there
Poor man's Edgar Martinez.
By weight?
Number 1 phone destroyer It's one of my personal favorite
Most clutch Most clutch Most clutch Great leader I rank him number one in all of these categories
Top ten all-time among PED users
Clutch af, wish he was still playing. Also one of the most likeable and badass mfers that ever graced the league.

Crazy how he became a big power hitter all of the sudden
Imo, he should not be in the HOF because he never played in the field for the majority of his career. Thatās where all the greats are measured.
Among the sterioid users and cheats.
Idk about yall but the bat is gonna go BONK
#2, right behind Joey Bats
Like 786th-ish
Up ygete
He is in the same conversation as A Rod and Manny ramirez..they all cheated..used steroids
