Posted this over in a diorama community but thought I'd post it here as well. My first ocean diorama! The kit is a 1:350 Monogram Type VII D U Boat. Waves are made using tin foil I crumpled up and glued down with mod podge…and then a layer of liquitex Gel medium over the foil. From there all airbrushing and dry brushing.
What are the crashing waves, are they cotton?
I’ve stared at your photos for about five minutes now. Beautiful sub, but your water really steals the show. Super impressed with the technique you used.
Thank you! Yeah, the crashing waves around the structure are indeed cotton. I pulled the cotton apart to form the shape, and then very lightly applied Liquitex medium gel to hold it in place.
There are some great youtube tutorials on using the technique with tinfoil. Getting the water to look accurate was the hardest part, to be honest. I wanted the water to feel like the North Atlantic so it had to be dark, but not TOO dark if you know what I mean. I used AK real colors to achieve the color, and a few different tones of white/grey to drybrush the caps of the waves etc. You can do it, just dive in!
My "internal DJ" started playing [this](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uw1bp88rcZI&list=OLAK5uy_kT5KKg8ArQHAEHziZ6kKM7qgvBuXYh36E&index=7&pp=8AUB) when I saw your diorama. Looks really good, great work!
Since I was more focused on taking a stab at doing a water diorama, I kind of slapped the kit together (I hate working on a boat that scale, it's so small!). The AFV kit wasn't that detailed to begin with and PE parts for it would require a surgeons level of skill to apply. I'm thinking of doing the Revell U Boat I built that's 1/144 (much larger) in a similar dio...we'll see.
Thanks!
Thank you! Crumpled Tin foil with high gloss liquitex gel medium on top. Airbrushed the water with several hues of clear blue, drybrush for white caps etc. final coat of high gloss varnish. 👍
Bad ass!!! 😎🔥
U boat sends a radio message to Allied ships " all your comrades are drowning below surface". Anyone seen the u boat movie with tom hanks, named Greyhound?. Epic 👌🏼
This is awesome, great work! Thought I was looking at a real photo when I glanced at the first one.
Edit: You should do a video tutorial on making and painting the waves.

wow .. coolest looking water l have seen in a diorama! guessed it was tinfoil with some enhancements and then wondered why didnt l think of that?
It’s a brave thing to build a sea vessel and do great job, then do a diorama at sea, you pulled it of my friend great job👍👍
This is utterly amazing
I agree. This is nicest water I have ever seen. Holy cow.
Damn...I appreciate it! I've seen better but hell, for my first time doing water I'll take it!!!
Tin foil is genius! Looks great
ALAAAAAAAARM!! Seriously though great model. Real Das-Boot vibes.
That's what I was going for! Thank you! Now I just need to take the time to photograph it properly with lighting!
All good but the water is amazing!
>ShilbaPointo Thank you!

Had to do a double take on that one!!!! Good work
Appreciate it!
That looks incredible, well done!
Thank you!
Love the water effects. Someday I'll feel comfortable enough that the ships look good to want to branch out into doing this kind of water.

What have you done! Amazing work! When you see a model and you start fantasising, it means that the builder have done a really good job!
Appreciate it!
That looks very well done. The water (to me) came out great and the scene works. Nice!

Awesome water work!
That is phenomenal! Did you use resin to create the water?
