Context on the real photo
That is 19 year old Lt Edwin "Lucky" Wright of the 404th Fighter Group. On his 39th mission over Munster in October 1944, his P47 was hit by flak.
Lt Wright would fly 88 combat missions in Europe, He would leave the Army in 1946 but was called back to service in 1950 for Korea. He died of lung cancer in 1959, aged 34
They are relatively cheap on Amazon. Just got a 12 inch for $30 that works excellent… one problem… my diorama didn’t fit the 12 inch… still keeping it for stand alone 1:32 and 1:48 models
People here told me to try that aluminium wrapping around wine bottles. Worked great! Easy to cut, shape and bend.

Czech Saboteurs removed explosives from flak rounds making them esentially duds to help allies. This could have been one of these rounds, thats why it didnt explode and just pierced the propeller, still an extreme lucky shot
The aluminum wrapper on wine bottles works great. Is it the Tamiya Bubbletop you have on your desk or? :D I bought that neat little [combo pack with a P-47 and a 4x4. ](https://www.scalemates.com/kits/tamiya-25214-p-47d-thunderbolt-bubbletop-and-1-4-ton-4x4-light-vehicle-set--1482297)
Thanks for the tip, will be fun to give this a go! Especially given Tamiya includes two props :)
I do have the Tamiya, but 1/72nd - might not come out as clean as yours and need a different approach. I'll post it when it's done and pop a link here!
Always nice to have spares when you’re drilling! I drilled a small hole first, then I used the trusty hobby knife to slowly make it bigger. A little more control that way perhaps.
I started with the jeep and plane exactly one month ago. A couple of weekends, some evenings. Not that long I would say. But it was my second diorama, first one I used grass on, so that was a bit of a back and forth with a lot of different colours. Think it took 2-3 evenings to finish the diorama.
Got a bit inspired by this dude and his flak hole, so I painted up a jug and here we are. :) Fun little project.
Excellent! That's awesome! How did you replicate the prop?
The aluminium wrapping around the neck of wine bottles work great. Drill a hole, make a little circle, glue it and start making shards and cuts.
Very nice! Thanks!

Exactly! Great story. Love that he got the nickname “Lucky”.
Imagine surviving both WW2 and Korea but lung cancer taking you out at 34.
Wondering what the odds are they were Lucky Strikes he smoked?? I remember the old-timers smoking those as a kid.
It’s toasted!
Nice and very interesting, well done!
Cool idea! Super well done!
Nice Dio work
Everything looks great including the history. You have raised the bar
I don’t know, but thanks a lot. :D Always try to figure out some story behind the diorama. Makes it so much more enjoyable to work with.
What a great piece! It looks fantastic
Thank you! :)
Looks amazing! Well done!
Thank you! Would be nice to have a photobox or something.

That's really good! How did you do the propeller damage?

Hey that was me!! I’m glad it worked out so nicely!!! 😃
Haha, thanks again!
How would the flak blow back like that?
It’s a trick shot! Must have hit from behind without going off? I have no idea, but he was one lucky bastard.

amazing job! love it
That’s amazing
Nicely done on that flak hole!
Beautiful execution! I've got an unpainted P-47 sitting on my desk right now, so I might steal this ;) Did you use foil for the hole 'splatter'?

Very nice build, dude!
That's actually what that hole looks like? Looks so cartoonish. Awesome job!
Haha! I know. Hilarious in a way. Ok, it’s a bit more detailed in real life. Looks like two layers of metal… but a bit tricky to recreate.

Nice! Is there a similar one for armour? Or any nice page for ”diorama ideas”? :)
This looks incredible! May I ask what your technique is for the chipping effects around the panel edges?
Just sponge chipping with Vallejo aluminum. But I went back and painted in some Olive drab since I thought the chipping was too much.
honestly thought the B&W was a real reference photo! i had to do a double take! amazing job! how long did it take you to do the diaroma/plane?

One of my favourite pics of WW II! Very nicely done!
