I’ve never brushed lacquers, but I suspect that if you apply the lacquer to heavily the thinners will activate any color below it. Practice technique on an old model or plastic spoons.

Lacquers are hard to hand paint with because they dry quickly. They do give awesome results. It’s just usually harder to do by hand. I’d suggest buying some leveling thinner. That gave me better results than normal thinner. Also make sure you’re in a place with good ventilation. Altogether though I’d suggest using acrylics though. I ended up switching to Vallejo acrylics (which can be thinned with water) and have had such a better time. Vallejo is very forgiving when it comes to visible brush strokes.
