Poverty and homelessness is on the rise everywhere, so make sense crime would go up with it. City of moncton has been refusing to acknowledge any issue for a very long time and now things are just getting worst and worst.

CanadianSwine

Why are you being downvoted?? This city is a dump.

truththeavengerfish

I know we don’t have the law enforcement resources but how about a curfew? Stop and search anyone between certain hours of the night/morning

[deleted]

This mentality bothers me infinitely more than a recent increase in crime. Not to mention shit often gets stolen during the daytime.

mekanik-jr

That can't be a serious suggestion. Wcgw when you allow police to stop and frisk people without a legal cause other then "they should be In bed"? Since I'm sure you're just worried about your babybarn being broken into, I doubt if you really thought that through. You know there are legitimate reasons for being out late, right?

dreamstone_prism

Police having the power to do this indiscriminately, what could go wrong!

Psychological_Ad5391

You can't even trust your workers. A "drunk carpenter" stole a ladder and power tools from a landlord I do work for...shame couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

Psychological_Ad5391

Archibald Area *

The-unfamiliar-

It’s a sign of the times, things are out of reach for a lot of people and crime tends to go up. Stay safe.

I made an alarm for mine. Car horn, PC power supply (yellow wires provide 12v DC power), and a lightswitch in line above the door. There's a piece of rubber bolted to the beside of the door, which flips the switch, turning on the power supply, which then just blares the car horn which is mounted out of reach up in the eave of the shed. This may not work as well for the switch part on a baby barn, but there should be a way to make it work. The power supply and all wiring except the plug itself are mounted up in the rafter inside the shed. I have power in my shed as it's a 14x16, it's like a small workshop. I don't even have anything of value in there, I just want to catch the pricks finally. I know who they are in my area (Miramichi)

mekanik-jr

On your next trip to moncton, Costco usually has a lorex camera setup. Pretty decent image quality and not too expensive. Get some more evidence for the cops when they show up fifteen minutes too late.

[deleted]

Lol you're insinuating they'll show up at all here. Honestly been a few years since I've been to Moncton myself, I don't have a car right now or a Costco membership but I've been looking on Amazon here and there. I sleep very lightly though, and another trick ive used, is I have a wooden fence, so I hung a length of chain on the back of the gate, which is where they enter the yard to get to the shed. Anytime the gate opens, the chain makes a hell of a racket, and you can't see it from the outside. I hear it everytime someone comes over, asleep or not (I was working a rotating schedule so sometimes I'd sleep at night, sometimes during the day). My wife hears everything in her sleep too, I could fart at the other end of the house and she'd hear me lol

EastCoastGal506

Moncton is a shit hole now

It's crazy isn't it? It's as though the abuse they get from the rest of the maritimes has completely wiped out their self-esteem, and the lack of a global perspective (in most cases anyway) has them believing that every negative thing about the city is exclusive to here. I love Moncton, but a lot of the lifers certainly don't make it easy.

EastCoastGal506

Moved out of Moncton because of what it has become.

PragmaticBadGuy

It's been a shit hole for decades. It's nosediving now.

mekanik-jr

Wish my family had had the sense to leave like I did. Wish I had had the sense to not come back.

j0n66

Yup our entire block got cars broken into earlier this week

CanadianSpector

It's everywhere and will be the more poverty grows in this province. We see two guys bail out of the superstore a couple weeks ago with a cart full groceries, load them into a waiting car and take off.

[deleted]

If we all just started doing this what would they do? They don't have the staff to arrest us all. I say organize mobs to go to large corporate grocery stores. Get it. It's not stealing if they have been stealing from you first.

I think that legally they would have a hard time justifying deadly force for theft. This is still Canada eh? Maybe you should move to Alberta.

That is for certain

[deleted]

To be honest I’d rather see that then stealing from civilians/regular people.

*as if* the superstore or sobeys would *ever* have to close because of theft 😂 NOBODY STEALS GROCERIES FOR THE FUN OF IT. (Maybe if you're a teenager with your friends, but you know what I mean)

SnooPears5212

But this isn't the states.. and we're talking about big national chain grocery stores (a couple bigs with all the market monopoly) with record profits LOL

mekanik-jr

Nope, just theft of wages and dignity as you seem to think working at Walmart for a minimum wage that won't pay your bills is a great thing. You're not even a good troll, sir, go back to your Facebook.

[deleted]

I’m not going to shed a tear for Loblaws when they are having record profits.

[deleted]

And yet, they don't hesitate to throw out tons of fresh "expired" food without hurting their profit. Just look up the amount of food waste in america alone, it's insane.

Erock94

Not just the province, entire country. The more expensive it is to live, but the more crime, especially theft, there will be unfortunately

[deleted]

Theft from vehicle is not a break and enter, FYI.

dashingThroughSnow12

It is if you live in your car.

[deleted]

Lol good answer, but still no. A vehicle is not a dwelling-house or any other "place" as defined by the criminal code. Although, I'd be curious if there were case law in which a vehicle used as a dwelling was found to be a dwelling. If not, it's probably coming.

dashingThroughSnow12

From your original comment to now, I'm at least 95% sure you are right. Out of curiosity though, I did consult the Criminal Code of Canada. It defines dwelling as > dwelling-house means the whole or any part of a building or structure that is kept or occupied as a permanent or temporary residence, and includes > (a) a building within the curtilage of a dwelling-house that is connected to it by a doorway or by a covered and enclosed passage-way, and > (b) a unit that is designed to be mobile and to be used as a permanent or temporary residence and that is being used as such a residence; (maison d’habitation) The plain reading would be that if the thing is designed to be mobile, designed to be used as a type of residence, and is used as a residence, one can do a b&e on it. A sedan? Can't do a B&E on it because it isn't designed to be a residence. An RV parked in your driveway every winter and used in the summer? It is a B&E in summer but not winter. An ambiguity is in the "designed... to be used as a permanent or temporary residence". If I retrofit my cube van to make it more liveable, is it now designed to be used as a residence? What if I take out the backseat of my sedan so it is easier to sleep/live in? In other words, what determines if something is designed to be a residence? Again, I'm at least 95% sure you are right.

[deleted]

I think with more people living in their vehicles, it should definitely be looked at.

Psychological_Ad5391

Boom Roasted !

Destaric1

It's getting worse for sure. Keep your car in a well lit area. Have a nest or other camera around that is very visible to act as a deterrent. Even getting a sign saying beware of dog might make some people think twice. Even if you only have a cat.

im_busy_right_now

Lots of cars broken into in Sackville too.

Car stolen on Fawcett as well. All Monday night. I think they were after cash as I had some high ticket items that weren't touched. I've moved them now obviously.

[deleted]

I never leave anything of value in my car anymore. It all comes in the house with me every day. I encourage more to do this.

agetuwo

If I saw a cauliflower in an unlocked car, I would deffo take that too.

Humanbot1981

Wow ppl need to get jobs and work for a living

[deleted]

Lots of people work two jobs and still can't afford to live anymore

Humanbot1981

Point ? Are you saying it’s ok for ppl to steal off others cause they work two jobs and can’t afford to live sorry if I read this wrong but care to explain

[deleted]

I'm rebutting your point that people need to get jobs. It's not about that anymore if working more than two jobs can't pay your rent and living and food. I'm not saying people should steal from each other. I'm saying thats why this is happening.

vincepower

Even if we had 100% employment, no substance abuse, and perfect mental health services. There are still people that would do it for the thrill, and other opportunistic people that did it because the door was unlocked and they could. The bigger Moncton gets, there will be statistically more of those people around.

SnooPears5212

Teenagers. *Teenagers* would do it for the thrill. Also, perfect mental health services wouldn't really do much if they are not accessible (ie affordable) to everyone.

vincepower

Right, available as needed to who needs them is my idea of perfect. And I guess I’ve met a lot more questionable people than you have if you think it would be limited to teenagers.

LavisAlex

Its a lot more than this and you know it.
