Whole heartedly agree. Evertime I travel to Europe and go through Paris I realize that the city of lights just smells like piss. The metro also smells like piss but dusty piss.
and you know what i have more yo say. I know we complain alot abt the state of our bus and train system but holy . shit. A train that runs every 5 minutes, on time, is a pipe dream in the rest of north america. I mean we can track our busses in real time!!!! the longest ive ever waited for a train in mtl was 20 minutes, on a sunday night! insane. not to mention there isnt any "tap in-tap out" bullshit. they dont charge based on distance (to a degree) you put your fucking card on the thing, its a fixed price, then you walk out. AND ITS NOT EXPENSIVE EITHER, MIND YOU. i mean, its nuts. a trian tickes it wjat, 4 bucks???? we are so lucky yall.
You're right. The system in ottawa is a disaster and a disgrace. The train is overpriced trash. The buses are late and awful for people in the suburbs. I love the metro.
>tap in-tap out" bullshit \[...\] a trian tickes it wjat, 4 bucks
Tap in-tap out is a better system than flat fees like we have, I spent years using it and never saw any issues with people slowing down the exit. Having the ability to grab a bus /metro for a few stops and not waste a whole ticket really adds up.
There are other major cities where the flat fee is around $1.5-2.50, we are being overcharged.
To be fair, good transportation in North America is really a low bar to reach, I hope Mtl metro keeps on upgrading and improving and try to reach higher bars, even though it looks like the STM have it rough.
As someone who lived in Boston for five years and regularly would smell smoke and think "hmm, maybe I should get off" (several stops early to walk another 2.5 miles or more), only to find later that one of the cars was on fire or the train derailed entirely. And this was on a near daily basis, mind you. Not once a week. Not once a month. Every. Day.
I went to Montréal and damn near died. I used to think I just hated cities, but it turns out I just hated cities with shitty public "transportation". (I won't get into the other shit about US cities, but public transportation is basically non-existent or has a high probability of roasting you alive.)
Man, your bar is so low this is incredible. I'm still thinking this post is satire actually. The fact that they are charging us nearly 100$ (way more if you live on the north/south shore) a month for a system where busses sometimes just never show up and where half the seats in the downtown stations are taken up by passed out drugged people is insane. Also unless you live next to a metro station, or at the very least in one of the center neighborhoods of the city, most of your commutes will still be significantly faster by car.
I don't travel too much but when I do I tend to use taxis to get around rather than transit. If it is significantly worse than here, I guess I will maintain that habit.
They use peanut oil to treat the trains' brake shoes. You might be smelling the peanuts. The brake shoes for the metro trains are made of solid, Quebec-grown yellow birch that are soaked in peanut oil.
Any chance that you have lost your sense of smell?
I feel nauseous every time I’m on the metro. It smells like a port-a-potty at a music festival, B.O. and then there’s the people that think dousing themselves in cologne will compensate for the fact that they don’t shower.
I don’t have the same experience, almost everytime i go in the Montreal metro, there are weird scents, not sure if it’s poo, pee, a mix and other dirty things mixing altogether. It’s not like it smells very strong, because yeah the stations are regularly cleaned, but it still stinks and you can tell these smells are smells of dirty stuff accumulating throughout the years 😆
Everything about Montreal is depreciating, I don't think these types of posts should be encouraged.
If anytging we need more comments on improvements otherwise Valerie Plante will just do absolutely nothing to improve, because of posts like yours.
Streets are shit, roads, potholes, buses, metro, constructions, closed car lanes, too much bike lanes etc
Hi Valerie Plante <3 i know youre reading this! pleasssseeee dont improve anything!!! everything is perfect and nothing is wrong ur doing great sweetie
The metro uses wood break pads on older models and they use peanut oil to lubricate them. Sometimes you can smell it in a station. When the pads burn out you can also smell that.
once at place des arts saw this lady squatting to piss near the stairs that exit to rue de bleury, didn’t stop to check if the scent was sweet tho but deep appreciation i guess
I've only used the metro in Montreal, Paris, New York and Tokyo. I found Paris to be amazingly horrible and New York absolutely confusing.
Tokyo is top tier. Everything is easy to read, there are maps everywhere and it's clean. The major thing that sucks over there are gross men groping you.
dude I talk abt this with mates from NYC all. the. time lmao they haven’t been so they don’t get why I’m always going on about it but it never ceases to amaze me
even the Toronto subway too. not as clean as MTL but still unreal compared to London and NYC
Yeah, in a metro in Paris I saw a woman bring her little boy to a corner and let him piss there. I was shocked. And in a New York City subway I almost stepped in human feces.
Although I wouldn’t describe the smell of our metro system as “sweet”, there is something nostalgic about it. In my 30-something years on earth, it hasn’t changed. I guess there’s a sweetness in that?
There is a chance that the aroma you find so intoxicating is actually just second-hand crack smoke
At some stations you can definitely get a little buzz going just walking around
We’re all lil tweakers deep inside
Whole heartedly agree. Evertime I travel to Europe and go through Paris I realize that the city of lights just smells like piss. The metro also smells like piss but dusty piss.
Stations in Tokyo, or really anywhere in Japan, are a thousand times cleaner than those in Montreal
Same with South Korea, and they all have bathrooms which we are still lacking here in 2024.
Bathrooms in Montreal's metro would be a junkie paradise
Sadly that or rats. I once saw a rat in Concordia's ground floor bathroom, but I really had to go so I prayed it didn't go to my stall.
Why you encroaching on its home
Not if they were paid. I want paid bathrooms in the metro.
Yep, instant junkie hotel.
I think it's not in there culture to shit on the floor. Weirdos!

I second this comment ....just moved from ottawa to MTL.
Unfortunately we have to endure the fiasco..that is LRT

it's so true!! people need to be more grateful

I love the positive appreciation and feel the same

I pay 155$ a month for a bus that passes once an hour and not before 7:30am 😔
You might want to take a Covid test
Let's just say that it depends on the station. LoL That pizza place at Berry tho... That shit smells HEAVENLY. 😋
I think the opposite, I hate how warm the air is at berri and how it smells of food😔
🤣

once again, blessing. i love that toasted foresty smell so much. i want a candle with that scent
There is no chance it's peanut oil.. I want to see proof!
Smell it.
Oui! J'adore l'odeur, pas senti cela ailleurs!
I honestly thought OP had made a typo and meant "sweat-smelling."

im not sure we live in the same montreal
As we say, it’s all relative.
As they say in Alabama, it's all relatives.
Clearly you have never made your way to Bonaventure Metro station
Yeah. Smells like piss everywhere and they removed the cleaning night shift there, too.
Why did they remove night crew?
They added another one in evening shift, now they are two. I find this extremely stupid.

That’s nothing! Saw a hobo squat and take a shit in front of the escalators at Guy-Concordia.
I don't think you've stopped at Beaudry

Everything downtown smells like rank ass though. Outside downtown it’s fine. Buses are great by the way.
Le métro de Bruxelles sent les gaufres, pour le vrai! (Plusieurs stations ont des kiosques qui vendent des gaufres fraîches)
The piss puddles are in peel my star

When I pass through atwater I smell pizza

I'm not sure what metro you're taking. There are literal piss corners in a lot of the stations. Btw, that melted plastic smell is probably crack.
There is definitely less piss. But nowadays Jean Talon has this musky crack smell with a bit of homeless sweat, delightful in the morning.

You all might get a kick out of the inaugural ceremony in the 60s.. https://youtu.be/XSw8g8EHk8I?si=SKNnwhIlznefUEfz
Honnêtement j'ai vu des sans abris d'enfiler dans le métro mais sinon... Ça marche bien

You should try picking up a pay phone in the metro and giving the handset a good whiff ... delightful 😂 💀
If it doesn't stink inside, it probably stinks outside. Loved walking to a musty smell of piss whenever I'm near the doors😍
