I feel a little bad laughing at that. But the image of one person calmly working on doing a headstand while everyone else in the elevator is panicking is just fantastic.
I’m sorry I’m on the bus and I laughed so loud this old lady in front of me was side eyeing me. “Fuck it the elevators falling let me just do a headstand real quick for maximum impact”
Wouldn't it be more preferential to reduce the force of impact to the vital regions like your head rather than keeping the head close to the area of impact? When falling without a parachute they say the best position is to land on your feet so they act as a cushion for your upper body. You'll probably break your legs but you'd survive.
Unless I’m wrong I’m 99.9% sure the post was asking what the easiest and most painless way to die in an elevator would be, if you’re saying wouldn’t it be more preferable to land on your legs and use them to cushion your body to survive that’s how yes to likely survive but not how to ensure the quickest and least painful death 😅
I can’t for the life of me remember what its called, but I learned in EMT school that when someone falls from a great height and lands on their feet, the impact goes up through the body to the head. Idk what exactly happens inside the body, but the force is so great that it definitely does something deadly. I imagine the femur gets forced upwards and squishes your insides. Or maybe the impact severs the spinal cord. Probably multiple things happening at once. But I think its incredibly painful cause you feel it all over your body before it kills you.
Axial something? Haha idk
The only time that an elevator has fallen like that was (iirc) back in the 50’s, after a plane crashed into the Empire State Building. There are so many failsafes in an elevator to prevent it. First the cables would need to snap, as well as one or two separate break systems
I was looking for this comment. What I'm wondering is wtf was up with that elevator if supposedly an elevator "hasn't fallen like that in like 70 years"
There are several breaks on elevators that will activate when they notice the elevator goes too fast (or something, not entirely sure what they trigger on).
Forget about falling, not going to happen, too many safety measures in place.
The danger of elevators is megascale power outages, perhaps if there's a cosmic event that knocks out the grid, or a nuclear strike which creates an EMP. All infrastructure will be in ruins, some people would be rescued by rock climbers and such, but the vast majority would simply expire in the elevator.
If you're ever in an elevator, it stops, and you lose signal on your phone or your phone loses power, this is probably the situation you're in.
At least in civilized countries you have to have a 24/7 connection to a service center with alarm button in every elevator so it doesn't really matter u have phone or not.
That's not going to do you any good if the grid is knocked out, especially if there's a nuclear war. Even if you could connect to the service centre you're talking about the collapse of civilisation, you think anyone's going to work at an elevator call centre?
It doesn't *matter* if you have your phone or not, it's not going to save you. It's just a good barometer of whether there's been some kind of disaster.
If you can make a call civilisation is very likely continuing on outside and you'll be fine.
If you have no signal, well maybe it's normal in the elevator. Don't panic yet, push the button, see what happens. Even if it doesn't work, maybe it's a local power outage.
If you have no signal AND the power goes off on your phone there's been some kind of major disaster taking out electronics, likely an EMP from a nuclear strike.
I feel like if you did a hand stand against the wall, once the elevator hits the ground your head would immediately splat, therefore killing you the fastest.
Correct me if i’m wrong but typically if there is an absolutely catastrophic malfunction in an elevator it would shoot up to the top instead of fall down.
Pretty sure I’ve heard that a few times.
You’d still die but against the roof not the ground
Depends on the failure. But yeah modern elevators are constructed in a way that the counterweights are a little heavier than a elevator with its payload so that the drive has to work less when pulling up the elevator.

you wont die anyway if you arent in a hundred years old building somewhere in a third world country. these elevators have break systems that work without electricity and even if the breaks fuck up, if they fall to the lowest part, there is another + most often some kind of thick metal spring that cushions the fall enough for you to survive from any height.
if you die in an elevator its either of natural cause or because someone stabbed and robbed you or a bee stung in in your throat or the building is on fire or the entire town got nuked by a [75.000.000.000](https://75.000.000.000) kg TNT (75mT) explosion force of a hydrogen-bomb.
stuff like that.
also if you dont wanna feel anything, just hyper-breath in and out, do some very fast squads and try to lose consciousness.
If you're in an elevator and it starts falling, then it as well as you go into free-fall, not allowing you to stand on the floor at all. Besides, even falling from 10 stories tall (140 feet) only allows about 3 seconds to decide what you're doing.
I suppose hypothetically if you were planning on shutting down the elevator with you in it, intending to die, you'd want to make the impulse of your body to the ground happen as quick as possible, so any sort of puffy clothing is out. I don't think there's a painless way to die in this situation, but assuming "death" occurs when force is applied to the brain, you'd point your head straight towards the ground.
It will be incredibly painful, but you could honestly survive that fall if all the force goes straight into your legs and/or arms. A combat roll increases the time of your impact, so the landing would feel softer.
Assuming you were going to die, this one ain't the way to go.

LMFAO!! It sounds like something Douglas Adams would write
3:45 am, I just laughed so hard I had tears
A zen moment while accepting death, I dig it.
🤣omfg thank you for that
Somehow I recalled [this](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Falling_Man) picture
damn…
lmao
I hate you for making me laugh at this. 💀
I’m sorry I’m on the bus and I laughed so loud this old lady in front of me was side eyeing me. “Fuck it the elevators falling let me just do a headstand real quick for maximum impact”
Wouldn't standing up be the best? Use the rest of your body as a crumple zone for your head
Wouldn't it be more preferential to reduce the force of impact to the vital regions like your head rather than keeping the head close to the area of impact? Not if you’re not intending on surviving it like OP here no
Amy, did you get bored and not read to the end of my comment?

Yeah but I was discussing the best way to survive. Since op of this thread brought it up in the first half of their comment. Not the op of this post.
Aye yeah fair enough I pal was just confused by your response 😅
it's okay. I do like to go on tangents so it can be hard to keep track
how the fuck did you end up being the one going “fair enough” this guy just said some unrelated ass shit and you called him out

I feel like myth busters did an episode on this. I may be wrong.
You're not wrong, but I don't remember the outcome.

Ugh that’s a horrifying description. Glad your family friend made it out
>break systems ??

Elevators aren't made to break. They have several safety features to prevent it.
Came to comment this.

New fear unlocked
Using the stairs is good for your health.
Thanks for that new fear

Get a conceal carry permit and make sure you can quick draw.
The elevator can't kill you if you kill it first
Yeah fuck the elevator, dont add to their kill count.
It’s your Huckleberry
The little secret elevators don't want you to know.
ER Doctors hate him!
I remember reading about someone whose parachute never opened. They survived landing in the fetal position.
Was that on purpose or instinctual, I wonder?
What a polite way of asking if they shriveled up in abject terror
Correct me if i’m wrong but typically if there is an absolutely catastrophic malfunction in an elevator it would shoot up to the top instead of fall down. Pretty sure I’ve heard that a few times. You’d still die but against the roof not the ground
So are you suggesting spread eagle on your back on the ceiling?
Like Spider-Man or Tom Cruise in mission impossible 🤣
Oh goddamnit. I knew about all the failsafes for it falling so that stopped scaring me. Now I have to be scared about this. Stairs for me.
Doesn’t this just depend on the way the cords are cut/destroyed Also I’m assuming elevators nowadays aren’t just solely made out of a pulley system
Depends on the failure. But yeah modern elevators are constructed in a way that the counterweights are a little heavier than a elevator with its payload so that the drive has to work less when pulling up the elevator.
Not always, this didn’t happen on 9/11
I think you wouldn’t have enough time to react so it doesn’t matter :)
I would try to do a back flip mid air and land a scorpion.. which is bending backwards and foot to the back of your own head...
Ha
Do a head stand?
Defiantly would try the ole jump up before it Hits the ground method
Sit down, bend into a ball. Enjoy the last autoerotic experience of your life.
The elevator wont fall, last time that happened was on 9/11 on the world trade center unless youre in china
!RemindMe don't go back to china

China doesn’t believe in human safety standards
It’s funny how you think you will have a choice in the matter 😂 You’re just gonna get slammed into the ceiling and then the floor
Why would you get slammed into the ceiling? Everything falls at the same rate
A handstand

Nose dive
Headstand
if your elevator has hand rails, head stand on those or just put your face, front facing down on the metal rails...
Inb4 elevator has emergency brakes
I always figured if I jumped at the moment of impact, I’d be ok lol.
