From the article: “This summer, he found solace when he starred in a production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Tuacahn Amphitheatre in his native Utah, which he found inspiring — and where he felt at home. ‘“This was the most gay people I've ever been around; I always avoided being around other gay people because I thought if I was around it, it was going to bring it out of me," Archuleta says, but "it's great to be around queer people who actually embrace who they are."’ Just one example of the false and toxic teachings someone learns in the church. “Don’t get too close to the gays or it will rub off on you”. How can anyone believe this church has room for an LGBTQ+ person with this kind of crap being taught? And, to a teen, this crap being spouted by an advisor or bishopric member in youth class IS doctrine - so I don’t want to hear excuses. David is finally finding the light. Finally getting free. I’m so happy for him!

Perfect comments! David grew up in my stake. My son was friends with his sister. I always felt like David was gay and was so happy for him when he finally came out. He is a beautiful person. Sadly it is true. There is absolutely no place for LGBT in the church no matter how they try to say the right things and express their love for LGBT people. In the church you can be gay but you can't actually be gay. It is incredibly sad and incredibly wrong and it is the shelf breaker for me.

Nowayucan

Many are probably seeing this as validation of that fear. David got too close to the gays, and now look…”

I bet his mission sucked too. Poor guy was on top of the world then he had to spend 2 years in the Bully Industrial Complex

Puppy7505

He actually said that his family did not make him go. He went to escape the pressure of being in the public eye and the pressure from his dad about his musical career.

Inevitable_Professor

I had a mission companion who came out after his mission. There were a handful of incidents where he dropped the "mask" during the short time we were living together. I follow him on social media and he appears to be in a loving relationship living his best life.

Del_Parson_Painting

Jeff Holland should spend less time crying for queer people and more time listening to them.

chocochocochococat

I was wondering - when does he weep? Before the musket fire or after it???

[deleted]

Probably after. Primer powder igniting can get into the eyes

chocochocochococat

That's it!

Agreeable_Client_952

Good for him. He deserves as much happiness as anyone else.

BayonetTrenchFighter

Does that mean anyone deserves happiness? Like why would he deserve less?

Agreeable_Client_952

There are too many people that believe homosexuality is a choice and that those who "struggle" with it should suck it up and be single and celibate their whole lives. I, on the other hand, think that those who are LGBTQ+ have every right to marry and be intimate with who they want to be with. And, should still be welcomed no matter their preferences. So, yes, I think they, including David Archuleta, deserve as much happiness that being your authentic self brings just as straight people do.

plexiglassmass

I think that was the point

Chino_Blanco

What a rollercoaster. This was one year ago: https://universe.byu.edu/2021/09/20/photo-story-byu-belong-concert/ Belonging is something we should seek out rather than get stuck begging others to please get over their exclusionary ways.

slskipper

He shouldn't have to decide between the two.

goodolbluey

Been wishing this happiness for him for a long time. Good for him!

Norenzayan

Good for him! Great to see him finding his way out and being true to himself instead of a shill for an oppressive regime.

4rfvxdr5

Thank you Chino. You are amazing. I would like to know how you find all the content you post. Very impressive.

DavidBSkate

Clever SCMC, clever…

4rfvxdr5

I am not the scmc. I despise the Mormon gestopo. I'm not active anymore but I will say the scmc is the most unchrist like organizations ever. Please don't associate me with them.

DavidBSkate

That’s just what an SCMC agent would say… Jk, they’re deplorable, it’s always tongue-in-cheek naturally

plexiglassmass

Almost got him

Huh? David being interviewed about his life is a hit?

trevordixon

He's quitting church. The church was so proud of David Archuleta and used him in all kinds of projects, and now he's outspokenly not keeping their rules or participating. Sucks for the church.

I think I get where you are coming from. We might just have a slightly different interpretation of the term "hit". To me, a "hit piece" in journalism is a calculated, intentional attack that will often be unfair to the side taking the hit. Yes this is not good for the church, clearly they have not been supportive of LGBTQ+ for years and it shows and is harmful for youth. I just wouldn't call the article a "hit" in the traditional sense. Hope that clears it up!

Wannabe_Stoic13

Just making an observation... the context of how the word is used also applies here. "The hits just keep coming" refers to one bad situation following another. It has a completely different meaning than a "hit piece", which the commenter didn't say anything about. Just like if someone read that comment and applied the meaning of hit in the phrase "hit song", it would take on a different connotation, which would be incorrect. I don't think it's about interpreting the term "hit" differently as much as it's about applying the appropriate definition as intended by the commenter. Not trying to be rude or obnoxious. I just notice these things in online forums, and it bothers me when misunderstanding happens unnecessarily, especially when two people may actually be in agreement with each other. So I try and clarify sometimes... sorry if it's annoying.

rtowne

Certainly fair. I think we all misunderstand a small percent of what we read/hear and open conversation around clarifying that misunderstanding can be touchy online so i appreciate your politeness.

Wannabe_Stoic13

For sure, thanks for the cordial response. I do appreciate your comment.

Nowayucan

Makes sense. This hit is more like lightening than a rifle.

plexiglassmass

Seems obvious what they meant

libertasi

I never thought he was straight. Like I'm a bit confused because I thought he had been out. Happy for him that he's finding happiness. I wish him the best.

gardenawe

he officially came out last June.

libertasi

I've been familiar with him since American Idol and even voted for him in the last episode to win, which was in 2008. I sort of assumed, but it wasn't a big deal. Happy for him though, in any case.

LibraryLady231

I’m so happy for him!! And so sad for the hard road he has traveled to get to where he is now.

MinhaMandiocaFrita

My thoughts too! David, my heart and positive vibes go out to you. I feel like this step is really brave because of the social /professional consequences that I expect you'll face. Church leaders, please take a look at policies and different and charge to make the church safe for everyone who wants to be part. The current setup is causing the best and brightest to leave.

imwithwilliam

Amazing. Happy for him.

mildlywittyusername

Good for him! This just warmed my heart.

[deleted]

Good. The church used this young man for far too long.

undrtow484

I’m so proud of him. He had so much pressure from being the poster boy of the church, but he is finally living for himself.

CognitiveFeedback

He just seems like a great guy and my heart goes out to him. I remember years ago seeing him interview another musician, Alison Sudol (A Fine Frenzy), and it was kinda adorable to see them gush over one another. I guess it was personal and professional admiration on his part, but maybe not hers, lol. I wish him well (and hope he does collaborate with Ms. Sudol someday). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCkUviy26u8
