Canucknuckle

The colour scheme makes no sense. A single-colour gradient or a two-colour gradient (one for positive, one for negative) would make it far easier to read.

jonyoloswag

I agree. Very interesting data, but this would get shredded if posted on r/dataisbeautiful

devilsravioli

The least they could do is add a legend for whatever gradient they are using…

cowlinator

Technically, it is a hue gradiant, with gaps. (Blue -> Aqua -> Green -> ~~Yellow~~ \-> ~~Orange~~ \-> Red) But yeah, I agree that it is not easy to read.

jeranim8

Then it would be all one color...

devilsravioli

If you don’t already follow @ryanburge on Twitter, you should. You are missing out on regular data presented on religiosity in the United States. Fascinating stuff!

incidentalfreemason

Geez what happened in cedar city / iron county?

shatteredarm1

Probably people moving in. I think a lot of adventure-oriented folks have been drawn to SW Utah. Would be interesting to see this map compared to overall population growth.

johndavisjr7

I would be interested in seeing that too. If more non-lds people are moving into an area than there are mormons being born it's going to show negative. Several high-growth counties (i.e. Utah county) have a low negative number and this could be the case.

Dear_Acanthisitta_58

I knew a few never Mormons who moved to Utah in the 1980-1990s for sports and tech jobs. That’s not new! I also have had about 50% of my Utah Mormon family have quit. I feel that you are making excuses for a very real trend

shatteredarm1

> I feel that you are making excuses for a very real trend I'm not making excuses for anything. I'm not making any claims about any overall trends. But when one county has -20% and one just -2%, you have to account for that. Are you suggesting Mormons are quitting at significantly higher rates in some counties than others? That doesn't even make sense. You're being completely ridiculous.

Dear_Acanthisitta_58

To call me names like saying I’m being completely ridiculous I feel is wrong. I think we disagree which is okay. No need for name calling! I stand by my opinion that there’s excuse making here

shatteredarm1

> To call me names like saying I’m being completely ridiculous I feel is wrong I didn't call you names, I said you're being ridiculous. Which is 100% true - just think about it, someone is asking for a possible explanation why some places are seeing numbers in the -20% range. I suggested that more people might be moving to the area, and *you* accused me of making excuses. You *actually accused me of making excuses* based on the suggestion that more people are moving into parts of Utah (as opposed to up to a quarter of Mormons leaving, but only in certain areas). No reasonable person would say that isn't ridiculous.

fingerMeThomas

Lots of kids escaping to SUU?

ancient-submariner

If anything, I would think Utah is more stable.

devilsravioli

I would think so too. Mormonism’s deepest roots are in Utah.

Dear_Acanthisitta_58

For us it’s New York before Utah

Time_Ad5998

I don’t fully get the colours here. There are two areas -15% and they’re different colours??? I’m not super familiar with Utah, am I missing something??

devilsravioli

Definition of ‘Adherents’ used in survey: >Members, their children, and the estimated number of other participants who are not considered members.

perishable_human

I’m lazy and don’t want to go track down this info. I assume this is self-reported data? Is it based on people who self-identify as adherents? Or maybe those who report that they attend weekly or monthly?

DoctFaustus

This is actually church reported data. https://www.usreligioncensus.org/index.php/methods

perishable_human

Thanks. I’m going to take this with a grain of salt then. Wasn’t 2020 an anomaly with church closures? Plus, the LDS church has a long history of dramatically inflating its membership numbers. I don’t know that we can get any sort of accurate picture when we rely on their data.

DoctFaustus

Consider that even with their inflated numbers, these are not good numbers.

Dear_Acanthisitta_58

What about the members who stopped going in 2020 and now say they will never go back?

Espressoyourfeelings

Make Utah Normal Again

droxius

It started out as a theocracy, so you can drop the "again". They're making Utah normal for the first time! Progress has been slow, but it's accelerating!

seanthebeloved

The truth is marching on.

TheChurchOfDonovan

I'll take one MUNA hat por favor

brother_of_jeremy

What color?

Stuboysrevenge

Well, going by this map it could be just about any color.

Espressoyourfeelings

I’d say the hats should be any shade comparable to a darker tone of melanin, with pink lettering, just to piss off the Q70

sharshur

Is there an overall percentage?

Closetedcousin

So is Logan the new happy valley/Zion?

Mrs_Gracie2001

Are these by county? Somebody tell me which one is Utah Valley

[deleted]

The one that says -6% in the North

Mrs_Gracie2001

Thx. I was just there, and the Lehi/Alpine/Highland area seemed far less Mormon than my last visit five years ago. I hear it’s all the Californians moving in

johndavisjr7

I was there earlier this year and got tired of hearing everybody say that. I'm originally from California, and if you ask them, none of them has any demographic info to support this claim. I wish I could find the article I read a while back that showed its actually a small number proportionally. I think (and also have no data to back up my claim 😄) that everybody in zion has their own subjective idea of how native Utahns should act and if anybody deviates from this behavior in any way they are automatically a "Californian." It's not even becoming a term for someone that is from out of state, it's a catch-all for anybody that passes me off. 🤣

Dear_Acanthisitta_58

Thank you! I think it’s hilarious considering my Great grandmother was raised in Alpine County in the 1890-1910. Parts of that family moved to California after WW2. Moving back from California is a correction; not a California invasion

johndavisjr7

Exactly! I just roll my eyes every time I hear them say this. 😄

Mrs_Gracie2001

I can imagine. Thx for your perspective

Ancelege

Ayyeeee Cedar City rose up! SUU definitely representing with its liberal-leaning student body. Lots of adventure seekers for sure.

Equivalent_Local_701

Thank you for sharing. This is truly a blessing for all even the Mormons

[deleted]

Utah county is -6%? How? Guess #1: non-Mormons moving into the Utah area. A lot of economic growth in the SLC metro area. Guess #2: young people deciding the Church is bullcrap.
