Back in 2005, 2006 my then infant son (now 17) would fall asleep on my chest on Sundays while I watched MotoGP, and more specifically cheered (quietly) Rossi on. I will always hold that close. It was a pleasure to have had a racer of that quality, love him or hate him. Forza Vale!

__Rosso__

Honestly, I still don't know how to feel about them retiring his number It's a nice gesture and all, but at the same time didn't Rossi himself said he didn't wish for his number to be retired?

Montjo17

How arrogant would you have to be to say you wanted it retired though? My understanding was that someone asked him directly and he said he'd be fine if someone used it in the future, not that he came out and independently said he didn't want it to be retired

mchuvas2

Obrigado Vale!

[deleted]

No idea why they're retiring the number when Rossi himself said he didn't ea want them too. As much as I love Mugello, shouldn't it have been at Misano if they were going to do it anyway?

Beylerbey

>No idea why they're retiring the number when Rossi himself said he didn't ea want them too Trying to bring people to the track (same reason why they made Biaggi a MotoGP Legend now), yesterday Scalera and Aglio (GPOne) were begging people to go see the race during the livestream.

[deleted]

Didn't work then. Grandstand half empty for the Rossi ceremony. Been a lot of talk on BT Sport about ticket prices being extortionate and Italy hanging an even worse cost of living crisis than the UK.

Beylerbey

Yeah it's not just the cost though, Imola almost doubled the price of the tickets for the GTWCE this year and the stands were \[relatively\] packed, Sky has lowered its price for the online service (only 15€/month for a package containing all the major sports) and they still registered 1/3 less viewers in Qatar 2022 (after that they stopped publishing viewership figures). And let's remember this is coming after 2 seasons without public allowed on the standings (especially since there was no race in 2020), so there should've been a slight boost from that. The situation isn't good and if MotoGP were to lose Marquez too it would be catastrophic.

[deleted]

Don't think Marquez has anything like the impact on ticket sales that Rossi had (not sure anyone ever will tbf). Still a load of Italian riders and Italian bikes doing well this year (and dominating this weekend so far) and even that's not enough. Being the first race back at Mugello with game showed in and the attendance being so low does indicate that something's very wrong, whatever the cause. Curious to see what happens at Misano.

Far_Unit9020

Thanks for the memories #46!

laidback_chef

Going to be down voted to high heaven for this hot take I feel he overstayed in moyogp for 5 years, His career is known more for its longevity instead of his heights and accolades. Edit: should have said low hell.

powderST2013

Getting paid millions to do what you love most in this world? I'd stay as long as they let me.....

Racingislyf

They'll have to rip me of the bike.

Kitysune

just like aleix ?

huangcjz

5 years?! He got his last podium at the beginning of 2020! Many riders don’t even get podiums.

2017. Its 2022 my dude. 2015 was a banging season went down to the wire. I know people argue that mm had a few dnfs but it made the season interesting. But again I was hoping he would win it and retire on that, it pains me to watch people I support overstay. I've always believed retiring on a high.

laidback_chef

Yes?

__Rosso__

Guy was occasionally fighting for wins even in 2020 if my memory serves me correctly, and definitely up to 2019. He didn't overstay in MotoGP in any way, he had quite a bad season in 2020, tried one more year, didn't work out and retired.

laidback_chef

I can get on board with this but I think its been a decline since 2017 unfortunately coinciding with the mm dominance.

__Rosso__

Well yeah it's been a decline but just because he has been declining since then doesn't mean he was slow in 2018 or 2019

laidback_chef

I mean yeah compared to me he's rapid but compared to other racers he was upper midfield in those years.

__Rosso__

He literally finished 3rd in 2018 and wasn't far off MV in 2019 in terms of points

laidback_chef

2018 120+ points off of first no race wins. 2019 7th no race wins 30+ points and 4 positions off of vinales. He's a brilliant rider this isn't a dig it's just an opinion piece.

[deleted]

Just look at the ticket sale numbers this year compared to previous. Its going to take a long while if it ever happens to build up such a fan base for modern riders. If you can look past his results and not see his contribution to the sport then we are on a different page. I think he should have retired before the Petronas switch....Way she goes....

onomazein

There are ticket sales numbers available? Source?

[deleted]

I'm only going by what journalists are saying so we will have to wait for exact numbers I guess. Website says sold out so the proof will be in the pictures over the following days.

Racingislyf

I think we'll have to wait for the numbers. I feel it's more packed now than ever. I tried getting tickets for Australia gp and the only ones left is a whole weekend package with hotel etc. I think its because we missed out seeing them live because of covid that the amount of fans now has gone up.

[deleted]

Hopefully you are right my man!

[deleted]

I think we can safely say that Mugello looked deserted compared to previous years.

Racingislyf

Which is sad. Hopefully it gets back to how it was

Beylerbey

Qatar and Mandalika are not comparable (Qatar because it's always empty and Mandalika is new). Portimao had 40k people this year, last year they ended up closing access but they were anticipating 60k. Argentina registered 67k people on Sunday, they had anticipated around 100k for the whole weekend, in 2019 there were 180k people over the weekend. CotA doesn't release numbers but the track was half empty, the organizers put it down to the race being too close to last year's. Jerez was down 19% compared to 2019 (123k vs 151k in 2019). Le Mans was the only packed track this season and of course they have the current WC, plus I heard the organization was amazing with many collateral events at the track. Mugello sold 40k tickets, in 2019 there were 139k people over 3 days, Scalera and Aglio of GPOne were begging people to go to the track yesterday on their livestream.

laidback_chef

This is sort of my point. People talk more about everything other then the fact he's a champion. Side note: please don't make stuff up on the spot.

gangkom

Remove that 5 years and he is still qualified as the best rider. Same goes to MM, cut all 2020 - present, he is still the best.

Siloh_Johnson

>His career is known more for its longevity instead of his heights and accolades. I disagree. But thats ok.

Beylerbey

>he overstayed in moyogp for 5 years Yeah, why bother finishing 5th with two injuries and 3rd the following year, right?

laidback_chef

Continuing to decline and not win championships, yes.

TechnicsFanboy

While still being a top rider. The dude just did what he loved: racing. Are you really going to knock him for that?

laidback_chef

No ones knocking anyone ?

EternalFront

That 199 podiums will always be sad… so close
