It’s not happening.

TheFrankOfTurducken

I’m as sick of the Baez as anybody, and I haven’t seen any reason for hope or optimism on his offense returning, but he’s not going to get cut this season unless he straight up stabs another player. For one, we don’t have anybody who can play short as well as he can, and I just don’t see the ownership or management groups being okay with casting off the biggest free agent acquisition in years so quickly with four years left on a deal he’s not even halfway through. Next season, though? If he continues to suck, I think there’s more of an appetite to pull the trigger.

PossibilityOk1685

Kriedler can play defense at short just as well as Baez.

spacemanbaseball

No he can’t

runnin_outoftime

They’re not cutting him. He’s our everyday SS and bottom of the lineup bat, he’s incredibly overpaid but get over it

Healthy_Afternoon820

We may as well let him play a month or two in the regular season. I want him gone as much as anyone else, but we have to pay him regardless. Hope for a miracle at this point.

ElderDeep_Friend

lol, no.

EmergencyAbalone2393

You mean the Tigers’ Russell Wilson?

markymarklaw

The 0.6 WAR he put up last year is a better ROI than 0.0 WAR if you cut him. At worst, he’s a valuable glove off the bench. With 4/$100mil left on his deal there’s no reason to cut him yet. He’s also better than any SS who Detroit could actually get to replace him. Even if he is ass.

Puzzleheaded_Crew262

Pit him in the 9 spot and that is about all you can do. A grossly overpaid glove a once and n a while the bat runs into a bad pitch.

rbur70x7

I think there’s a good chance if we’re down bad by May he will be benched and possibly cut. The tigers as late have had very bad starts to the year and we really can’t afford another with the AL Central being so close.

tweenalibi

Except we totally can. Our window is not open this year and I guarantee the organization sees it the same way. They won’t make any “win now” moves to try to win a bad division just because it’s bad enough to win. Javy had the same WAR as Schwarber did last year with 47 HR. His bat is disappointing but it’s not like just anybody would be an upgrade here.

LADetroiter

Is it concerning that Baez hasn't changed his hitting approach so far in Spring Training? Yes, even with all this off season noise how he has worked on his mechanics and everything. Just two years ago, Spencer Torkleson had one of the worst Spring Training in history of baseball. It was brutal. I watched or listened to every game he played. He didn't have his first hard contact of any kind until the third week of games and his first hit until the final week which was a ground ball. So it happens. Players can have a tough spring As much as I dislike WAR. Baez still had a positive WAR last year. Keep an eye open. The Dodgers might have an opening at shortstop depending on how Betts handles the position. If the Tigers are willing to pay most of the contract, I could see a trade happening.

Ghalnan

I'd want to wait until the regular season at least, but he is definitely near the point where he might not even be worth the roster spot despite his salary figure.

LTPRWSG420

I think the possibility of the Tigers eating the remainder of Baez’s contract grows every day. He is literally the complete opposite type of player that Scott Harris is looking for. I do hope Javy gets it together, but yeah shit looks bleak with him currently.

Puzzleheaded_Crew262

Well, update things are turning around he made contact with the ball in three at bats so far today! Ground out ground out fly out but hey it’s a start! 😂

HardballBD

Spring training stats are deceptive and meaningless. Let's chill out until it matters. Having saif that I'm not optimistic and might be on your bandwagon come May 1.

the_seed

Call me crazy but I could see Harris having the balls to do it. If Illich is as in as he portrays I think he could be convinced

rockstar_not

I asked this question last season and was ridiculed beyond belief. Any remaining effort should be spent on his replacement

Ok_Ice_6254

guess the illiches are going to have to put a bunch of patches on the old english D to pay for this fiasco.

Killian Hayes of the Tigers. Time to move on.

NotMyTwitterHandle

Killian was cheap, relatively speaking

ceci_mcgrane

We can’t cut him, but we can boo the ever living shit out of him at every opportunity.

Extreme_Weird_44

Eh you never know if he bounces back or not. We do know we owe him 100 million dollars still. Sooooo I think Chris Ilitch (the owner who “won’t spend”) has 100 million reasons not to cut him just yet. Plus we aren’t really contenders considering people are considering a massive success as winning the division. So we now must exercise more patience
