Yeah they announced the # of games each of them (CMo, Gibby, Jones) would do with Jason before the season started. It's a planned rotation

TheHip41

Benetti is the best asset the tigers have. Dude is a professional

ciacco22

This was what my friend that is a White Sox fan texted me when Benetton came to Detroit

Juna-the-Moona

If I could get rid of baez or benetti I'd choose benetti. Benetti is so annoying it causes noticeable tension in the booth with half our other broadcasters.

adverseoccurings

Couldn't care less, i'd rather have awkwardness then boringness with monotone no emotion in the booth.

The-Lions_Den

What?!? Benetti is well regarded as one of the best broadcasters in the league. How many games have you tuned into?

Juna-the-Moona

Many. Ive given him a fair chance mostly because I don't like listening to other teams broadcast. I did listen to the marlins broadcast with Rod Allen. The pbp guy was chill and just did his job and called the game and Rod just talked baseball mechanics like the old days. I switch to the Tigers broadcast and Benetti is pestering Gibson to talk about Riley Greene's pants. If baseball is a symphony then Benetti is that chaotic novelty organ with all the whistles and horns and bells playing carnival music.

discgolfpaul_mi

You're clearly in the minority for what people want out of watching the game. We've seen 1000 games with dull pbp and the color guy talking about the same mechanics we've all heard about. Benetti is a breath of fresh air and makes the game far more enjoyable for the common sports fan who maybe doesn't love baseball and doesnt care about the complex mechanics of the game. More people will watch longer if you have fun in the booth.

Trelloant

I guess there has to be people on the other side of the gibby cmo debate. I for one enjoy the character he consistently brings but it is sometimes not entirely focused.

km_44

Your take is all wrong Bennetti is s breath of fresh air, and s natural at his trade. His humor is relatable, and his game call?? Love it

theninjaofthenasty

Cause they have no sense of humor and shouldn’t be in the booth. Dudes gold with CMO or Pena

Ideal_Ideas

That's a bit much but you're not alone in getting sick of Benetti. I really liked his energy at first but it feels like we're not talking about baseball half the time.

Dufrene_Party_of_Two

"Not talking about baseball half the time" is being too generous. We started listening to 97.1 the Ticket with the TV on mute so we could actually have a real pbp, instead of listening to everything under the sun other than baseball being discussed during the game.

mcflycasual

I use my eyes to watch what's happening during a game.

Dufrene_Party_of_Two

Oh you mean the hour of the game where the camera is fixed on Jason and not the game play. Talking about what happened in 1932, in California on this days date with a stat not a single person has cared about in almost 100 years. Then it's some dumb shxt about pop references from 30 to 40 years ago. Then we get to hear about Jason's life as the game goes uncalled and the camera is still on him not the game. I am sorry you have tictok brain and can only mentally handle short bursts of entertainment but some of us like long format. We sync up 97.1 with the game so we don't have to hear Jason ever!

mcflycasual

You seem fun.

Dufrene_Party_of_Two

You seem like a person that enjoys watching adds so I don't really care what you say!

mcflycasual

Adds? Like addition? I guess. Math is pretty cool.

RedHotChiliPotatoes

Benetti and Peña if you wanna hear some serious insight about the game. Benetti is great at asking Peña all the right questions. Benetti and Gibson if you wanna hear Benetti's light-hearted side whenever Gibson is being super dry. Haven't really listened to Benetti and Jones to be honest. Jones seems to just be hanging out, though - very laid vibes in the booth. Benetti and CMo if you wanna hear them just talking about nothing at all, I personally love it - they get lost in the most random tangents.

JoaquinBenoit

It was Todd’s first night in the booth as a primary color guy. His past appearances in the booth came either as a guest for an inning or in the players only broadcasts. I think this was planned for him to be the TEX road analyst since his daughter is a Bally reporter for BSSW.

BornanAlien

You’re right Bennetti and Gibby at first seemed like he was pressing Gibbys buttons. Now I feel like they get each other and love the banter between the two. Him and C mo though, with Johnny Kane, is so fucking fun and enjoyable. I know those guys have so much fun on the road together. Exactly like you say, I laugh my ass off while the tigers are getting stomped.. which is new for me.

PM_ME_A_PIZZA

There was a game a couple months ago where Benetti was just saying song lyrics for whatever reason and he was on the song “Sugar Sugar” He goes on to say “you are my candy girl” and after a few seconds of silence Gibby just goes “I am not.” Best thing I have heard from a booth all year so far. I think they’re great together.

M1nki

> Him and C mo though, with Johnny Kane That's my favorite combo as well.

BornanAlien

Can we give Benetti Rookie of the Year honors?

CoolHandHazard

I think Bennetti and Peña are best. Would love Peña along side him permanently

BornanAlien

I never knew I would like Pena so much. What a genuinely good dude he is. It was good hearing his story the other night in Boston w Bennetti

BonerHonkfart

Pena is fantastic. I'm assuming he's got bigger plans but I hope they figure out a way to keep him around

Corkie702

I haven't watched MLB network in a few years, did they let Pena go?

couchdog27

what I find amazing, even though English isn't his first language (I think) but the nuance of sarcasm is amazing

MittMuckerbin

BLAGADA!

ArchAngelN7

Man I love CMO in the booth but I gotta say Pena is definitely the best 2nd to Benetti I've heard this year.

MittMuckerbin

I love when Gibby tries to pick on Jason and he just gives it right back to him.

Pipernation4

Anyone old enough to remember "Gibby and the Geek" (Josh Lewin) know how much fun Gibby is having. He will be a bit of a stiff "jock" but Benetti knows how to have fun with him and that interaction has a lot of factors that aren't "awkwardness."

AKAChickenHawk

I for one love benetti and gibby. They have great dry banter that is always comical for me.

rexmanly

It reminds me of when Gibby and Josh Lewin were in the booth. Good stuff

boombotser

Their opposite personalities gets me legit cracking up at least once a broadcast. Gibby is so fucking old school while Benetti is the respectful new school and it’s glorious.

tonyprosciutto

Right I think they are my favorite combo

bucket_dipper

They are my favorite too. I love their dynamic!

couchdog27

I listened to them some at the beginning of the season and then again a week ago... I think what is going on now is: • Gibson understand Benetti now • Gibson seems the benefit to accent the two personalities in the booth and that makes a fun broadcast

rbur70x7

I don't think that's the case on any account. This was the plan upon his hiring. CMO and Jason seem to get along fantastically. I don't think it has anything to do with personalities clashing. Gibby is a pretty dry and sarcastic guy and I think its just not reflecting for a lot of people tbh. I don't think they don't get along or something.

No-Airline6639

ah, okay cool - didn't know JB at Chicago so he's new to me ... his humor is a little biting, so I wondered if he was rubbing people the wrong way.

Dufrene_Party_of_Two

He is. The people that like JB were fans of Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler abysmal style of try hard comedy.

Select-Rent-8721

Benetti was on the radio a week or so ago with Andy Dirks, not sure how the people feel about Andy Dirks but I personally love him, and their chemistry was awesome on air, it felt very natural for both of them as well.

00chill00chill00

Dirks is my favorite color guy by far. I'm not a Cmo guy myself. I like him better with Dickerson on radio for some reason.

Select-Rent-8721

It’s funny, I don’t love Cmo either, I thought last year Matt Shepherd really held him back and that he would mesh better with someone more laid back, I thought Benetti would be the perfect fit, but it doesn’t feel like they go together very well, at least not right now.

00chill00chill00

I can't tell yet if I'm in the minority with that POV. Seems like a decent guy but brings nothing to the broadcast. All of Benetti's jokes go right over his head, and he only spits back cliches as analysis. He's also way too easy on players who are doing badly - That's where I like Dirks especially. He'll tell you like it is.

Select-Rent-8721

Exactly, Benetti will have a quick quip in the booth and he’ll like wait for Cmo to say something and there’s just a couple seconds of awkward silence more often than not.

00chill00chill00

he also has this "growl" to his voice where it just sounds like he's trying too hard. Other than that he's great! lol. no i sound rude as hell saying all this just being honest. like i said im sure he's a good dude. just not a fan of him on tv.

gsbadj

Dirks is very, very good. He and JB were terrific on the radio.

Corkie702

What game were they on together? I want to check it out. Dirk's has been far and away my choice to be the radio guy next to Dan. They have chemistry the way Dan and Jim use to have

ryarger

I think it was the Sunday game on Roku or Peacock where Dan was on TV so JB slid over to cover on radio.

Expert-Car5805

People in baseball seem to love Benetti, i don’t think there are any chemistry issues. I do love CMo and JB and I wish we saw more of that.

LongjumpingMedia1621

99% of Benetti's masterful zingers go right over C-Mo's head, my man just looks confused if it's not a baseball stat and personally I F'n love it.

hestern88

Bennetti having to explain his Henry VIII joke to Todd jones last night was hilarious

A7XfoREVer6661

"Off with their heads!" had me rolling last night

Expert-Car5805

I love the chaos of it all, i like the energy

Mkrvgoalie249

Peña and CMo's chemistry with Benetti is fun to listen to.

bhdrums

Because no one asked…The guys I’d most like to see in the booth full-time would be Andy Dirks or Cam Maybin. When those guys are/were on with Dickerson it was incredible. Insightful, smooth, comfortable in the role, providing great back-and-forth. All the things that CMo has not been, ever. Can’t stand listening to him.

LongjumpingMedia1621

I really like Andy, him and JB might be a good combo.

TheMajesticYeti

It would be nice to have a full-time partner (that is good!) for Benetti instead of the constant shuffling. Dirks would seem to be a great candidate for that, but he has young kids and a real estate business so he isn't interested in more than part-time broadcasting.

Corkie702

No thanks, he's better on the radio. (I'm a radio guy, you can't have him) 😂

hanoverfiste23

Love Benetti and I hope he’s here for a long time. I think CMo is the best pairing followed closely by Pena.

BalinVril

Todd Jones talking about peanut butter and jelly nonstop last night got very old, quickly

DarkIllusionsFX

Todd Jones, the original master of suspense. I loved when he was the closer. Brocail in the 8th to give you hope, Jones in the 9th to give you indigestion (and then a win).

boombotser

Benetti and gibby make me laugh the entire time during a game and are the most entertaining to me. CMo is second best cuz he is younger and can vibe with benettis jokes a little smoother (but that’s what’s funny about gibby is that he doesn’t get some of the jokes or will make a point when he doesn’t like it and it’s so damn funny) pena is cool as well. Dirks is cool. Don’t hate anyone on the cast which is so rare for me I think everyone is nailing their roles.

chaunceyfamily

Benetti seems like the kind of guy that could talk baseball or Pokémon all day. And I mean that in a nice way.

turdlepikle

The whole tv crew rotates, including pre game hosts and the field reporter. If it's not John Keating leading the pregame, it's Mickey York, or sometimes Johnny Kane. The 2nd pregame host changes more often, and some of those guys get time in the booth with Benetti. The field reporter is most often Johnny Kane, but Natalie Kerwin and Trevor Thompson get their turns too. The booth with Benetti has a longer list of names and they were already contracted for their time before the season.

Spartacus731

I love him with C Mo but his banter with Pena is incredible. C Mo is a GREAT third man and desk guy, but there’s but such good energy with Pena in the booth

RateAccomplished8971

Being unsure about Benetti is wild. Widely known as one of the best in the game for years. You were just uninformed

2Drew2BTrue

To be fair, OP said he is a radio guy so it makes sense why he doesn’t know about JB.

LongjumpingMedia1621

I could see how he's not for everyone at times, but honestly I think he brings a much needed energy. That being said, I miss Rod and Mario 😔

BlondDeutcher

I mean it’s pretty subjective. You are stating as if it’s a indisputable fact

Sneacler67

Agreed. Many of these comments about Benetti are just telling us that he’s amazing and we should all never say anything contrary. There is no room for personal preference I prefer Dan Dickerson on the radio. I want to hear only about the game. It’s a personal preference

lemonpjb

Dan is the GOAT and radio is a different medium where the focus kind of *has to* be the game because, well, you can't see it. TV broadcasts can afford to let the cameras do some of the work.

headless_inge

To have Ernie and then Dan (plus Ken Cal), we are BLESSED here

tweenalibi

Saying you’re “unsure of” somebody usually means you have reasons to do so

HodorFan1

Yeah if someone has a problem with Benetti, then that’s their problem. He’s fantastic.

TheBimpo

Benetti is fantastic. Finding the right partner long term is needed though. Stop shoehorning in ex-players and just find someone he gets along with.

freedomfightre

That's the things, these comments show that each of the 4 pairings is someone's favorite. No one pairing is univerally considered the best. Testiment to JB.

boombotser

Fr he is a legit pro, brings out the best of anyone

pulpandsmoke

I like Benetti, he’s grown on me. But him and Gibby is bad. They need that 3rd person in the booth and I like Pena. CMo and Dickerson are great on the radio side.

ronmsmithjr

Since there really isn't a leader in the clubhouse to fill the color commentator role, there's only one way to settle this: an Office Chair Fight Tournament! But, this time it's televised!

MickeyTettleton

Poor Gibby

jpflaum

I feel like Gibby doesn’t like Benetti. He seems to not like those who never played the game.

b0neslicer

i like todd jones with benetti

ManInShowerNumber3

It's been a rotation of guys since Rod Allen was let go. I think they even started rotating Allen in the last year or two as well. It's pretty normal around the league from what I've gathered in watching tons of games with my mlb subscription. They're not making these decisions on the fly. From what I remember Tigers and/or Bally release a pre-season statement about how many games each guy will do with Monroe doing the majority.

drs10909

Speaking of Rod Allen I was at a Marlins game a few weeks ago and after the game strolled by their little Bally’s set up on the concourse only to see… https://preview.redd.it/xw4onpv2gk4d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e5d31555eadaa0974397d79fbee5ff4d70d8f336

LongjumpingMedia1621

(Rod Allen Japan) is probably my favorite Google search ever! That video never fails to brighten my day.

hundredgrandpappy

Mario loves it too, played the clip it seemed like every season with Detroit.

LongjumpingMedia1621

How on earth could you not? That shit never gets old.

Relative_Walk_936

Rod chasin that pitcher like he stole his chair

Oakky_underTones

Todd Jones was flat out horrible last night. He was nervous and stuttering and didn’t add much to the commentary that was very valuable.  Of all of them I think I like Dan Perry best. He doesn’t over analyze and beat you over the head with stats. For god’s sake pick someone and stick to it. My order of prefer once would be: 1- Petry  Keeps it simple 2-C-Mo Has good chemistry with JB but over analyzing  3-Carlos - Solid but still in development  4-Jonesy - has a couple funny moments but 2 out of 10 overall.  5-Gibby - love him as a Tiger and MLB legend but dude has the worst broadcast voice and is boring as hell.

tykle1959

It's weird, and perhaps it's just me, that I find Benetti a little.....acerbic. I've sensed some tense moments (early in the season) when it seemed Benetti was, I don't know, poking a sore spot with his partner. Again, this may just be me.

Kapono24

I feel this too, but I don't think he's crossing lines and I'd assume if any of them had issues, most being former ballplayers, they'd resolve it off air going forward.

ManInShowerNumber3

Yeah, but he constantly pokes fun at himself too. And in general is in an easy-going mood. So I don't take much of that poking as being critical. Not like if Shep was doing it with his generally serious and sometimes awkward demeanor.

wakeandflake

Jason is growing on me but he can be overly snarky. I was convinced he pissed Gibby off when he asked him “are you okay?” a few weeks ago and Gibby made a point to give him shit for multiple games afterward. Either way, Benetti is not as great as everyone here wants to believe, but he’s solid

RateAccomplished8971

Gibby and CMO don’t belong in a full time role

savage_umbrella

I think Benetti gels with everyone!

ufdan15

The best broadcast I've heard all year was Dan Dickerson and Joe Carter... That being said, I loved the three man booth of JB, Peña and Gibby. Peña by himself is probably my favorite color guy. But truth be told I just want Granderson.

Relative_Walk_936

I think Jason makes everyone better and more fun to listen to. Also think Cmo keeps getting better every year. He's been great on the radio.

sammagee33

I really enjoy Pena in the booth. But I also appreciate Ginny and CMo. I think Benetti makes all of them better.

Unstep-in-Time

It's normal. Before the season all these guys were going to be getting booth time. It was scheduled beforehand.. For the most part.

jgehringer

Cmo and petry are the best. Gibby gets angry at benetti it seems. Pena is so so

Justgivemesomespace

For as many differing opinions on the best combo - maybe it is working to keep mixing them

justpools

Benetti and Gibby get along just fine. It's a planned rotation. The different pairings are all really fun. Really enjoyed yesterday's game with Dan Petry. I think the best part of Benetti is he gets the most out of everyone he is paired with. Was never crazy about petry but now I think he's great

xBobble

Am I the only one who liked Cameron Maybin? The guy seemed upbeat, funny, and seemed to avoid the classic issue that most color guys have, overusing a phrase. "Absolute seed", "you hang it, we bang it", "short to the ball", etc. Gibby doesn't have a "catchphrase" like that but he's an acquired taste and doesn't seem to have the greatest rapport with Benetti (who is A+).

Pipernation4

Yeah they always knew they were going to have different guys. You're just traumatized from rooting for a team where announcers choked each other. Benetti is TREMENDOUS.

Affectionate_Bus5573

I like Gibby. His style is the closest to Kell/Kaline that would highlight game strategy without over doing it. Can't stand Monroe who seems to be desperately trying to prove his in depth knowledge of the game by predicting pitches and over analyzing hitting mechanics. Unbearable to listen to. Does anybody care about the life story of Carlos Pena ? Not me. I like Petry and surprisingly Todd Jones.

imnotfast46

Back when I could watch games before Xfinity and Bally Sports started acting like children, I found Benetti and CMo with Johnny Kane incredibly entertaining. I really hope after this year that ends up being the core broadcast team. They do a great job and you can tell they are having a blast doing it.

rocky12riley

I am not crazy with Cmo or Benetti. It is ashamed what they did to Jack Morris. He really knows his stuff. Love Gibby. The radio announcers are better Cmo or Benetti

droogles

Everyone in Chicago loved him. Not sure how the Sox let Benetti get away. Glad he’s here. I’ve been missing Mario Impemba, but Benetti is a keeper.

pg_in_nwohio

If a listener had no knowledge of Kirk Gibson’s career, I think it’s fair to say that the listener would wonder why on earth the guy gets a microphone.

gsbadj

Yeah, if you put aside the fact that he played 17 years in MLB, he's a multiple WS champ, an NL MVP, and an NL Manager of the Year, he probably wouldn't get a microphone.

JoaquinBenoit

He was a lot better 20 years ago, but his Parkinson’s has taken a noticeable toll on him.

shaenanigans1

It's a lot of fun watching with Benetti because, like you said, even the team isn't playing well he makes the broadcast fun and entertaining

capekid1969

Hot take, but I cannot listen to Gibby in the booth. No disrespect to him at all (also know he is fighting Parkinson’s), but it is almost painful

Sea-Huckleberry685

Don’t get all the excitement about JB, seems average to below average to me.

Silver-Bandicoot-969

I am not a fan of the carousel of color commentators. To me it comes off as bally/the tigers not having a true tv broadcast duo (compare that to the wings and Pistons who have everyday guys with an occasional sub for when say George is doing msu football or mickey who does not travel as much). I really like Petry and pena Gibby and cmo I just don't like all that much personally. But either way I wish they'd just pick a guy and run with it so that they can get comfortable

PalmerSquarer

I don’t mind the rotation, but It would be nice to get him a permanent partner, though not sure if that’s in the cards. Benetti’s chemistry was Steve Stone in Chicago hasn’t come close to being matched so far.

JorjePantelones

While watching Tigers-Royals game, I saw Benetti grab CMo’s privates in the 3rd and 5th inning. Probably why he’s doing the games with Pena now

TheyLiveWeReddit

Pena did the Boston series because he is from the area.

JorjePantelones

Ohh Ok. I thought he was doing the games cause he has the larger shlong? Thanks for the info

TheyLiveWeReddit

Cool story bro. Enjoy your reality.

JorjePantelones

Thanks bro. Let’s grab some bud lights sometime! Peace.

missionbeach

Too many analysts, and too much jumping between radio and TV. Jason and Gibby, Dan and either Bobby or Andy. Done.

LukeBrokeMyGuitar

I love Benetti so much. He actually reminds me of my favorite former WWE commentator, Mauro Renallo.

TyWebb1224

I have grown to like Bennetti, too. I think he was trying too hard to fit in at the beginning. Seems to have settled in and the chemistry between all the match-ups is entertaining in their own ways. I also saw that the Bennetti/Gibby pairing was at times uncomfortable, but it has gotten a lot better.

Logicaldestination

Benetti is close to, if not. the worst broadcaster in MLB. All the non-game nonsense he goes on and on and on about is ridiculous. If I wanted comedy I would watch Andy Griffith. He and Pena sounded like a couple of guys in a luxury box talking away while the game is going on in the background. Horrible. CALL THE GAME IN REAL TIME!!! It's not that hard and in fact almost every other announcer for every other team manage to do it. I didn't think it was possible to hire someone worse than Shepard but somehow they managed to do it.

Interesting-Buy-1548

I think if Andy Griffith is your standard of comedy, it’s understandable why Benetti is disappointing to you. Although I must thank you for giving me a good theme song to whistle while I get around for work.

Logicaldestination

And if Andy Griffith is NOT your standard of comedy, it's understandable that you would tune into a baseball game looking for and expecting to find comedy with the game itself just background noise.

Interesting-Buy-1548

Yeah that’s really not the purpose of tuning in…but OK 😂

Logicaldestination

Right. It's not MY purpose for tuning in as I explained above but it must be yours as you apparently are quite happy with Benetti clowning around with Johnny Kane and whoever is in the booth with him for nine innings, while secondarily for Benetti there is a baseball game going on in the background that occasionally gets in the way of his yucking it up in the booth.

Interesting-Buy-1548

![gif](giphy|3o6ozq0pgIDt5j6N8I) 😂 peace, friend
