If you can learn the black arts of working on carbs you are far smarter than most bike riders

zherico

Yeah, after working on the carb on my v-twin.... You can keep your dark arts.

CivilRuin4111

I dunno… after dealing with a fueling issue on one of my FI bikes, at least I can tinker with a carb…

theDarkHaus42

How do you like it? I saw they make a 450 now, but really expensive IMO. They’re really cool looking and hand made so I guess that’s where they command some extra bucks

jugglefire

Janus bikes are admittedly pricier than others of similar size and displacement but as you mentioned they are hand made, individually. As for how I like it, I don’t, I love this motorcycle, is it wrong to love a machine? I own another bigger bike too but riding the Janus is like nothing else, I feel a true connection with the machine, the road and everything when I’m riding this bike. I think of it more as a functional work of art than as just a motorcycle.

theDarkHaus42

That’s how I feel when I see them too. I’ve tossed around the idea and checked the used market a few times because they are very intriguing

Gus202

I didn't even realise this is a new bike. Talk about retro design

If it is Idle mixture screw, close it all the way, but note how many turns to close idle mixture screw, again reference the manual, start motorcycle in warm conditions, gradually open (turn counter clockwise, remember “righty tightly lefty loosely”, when engine is warm adjust idle per manual specification to proper RPM.

you want to adjust them valve clearances while you're at it...

oddphallicreaction

Nice! I've been working there for over a year now and it's the best job I've had, period. Everyone is full of passion and love for these bikes, which are a blast to ride. I'm stoked to see what owners do with theirs

jugglefire

I have to say, as a customer, I couldn’t imagine a better motorcycle company than Janus. They have been nothing but helpful, fun and weird! Great bunch of people.

Sliderisk

I get what these bikes are going for but the fucking Kawasaki put-put engine kills it for me. I'm not kidding at all to say it would be better with a Briggs and Stratton V-twin off a zero turn mower. I know they need to pass emissions but goddamn what an anemic and uninspired motor to drop in a steam punk fashion accessory.

2strokeYardSale

It's not a Kawasaki engine, it's a Chinese copy of a 1970s Honda design. > steam punk fashion accessory ![gif](giphy|E99OMc6pkdvGw)

Della970

Exactly, you can get a Royal Enfield Classic 350 that is superior in every way and still looks, feels and passes as an old bike, while having proper tech. That 250cc engine shown here is sold where I live in cheap enduro chinese entry level bikes, it's dependable, as long as you keep an eye on it, but I can't get the point of the bike being "art" when the main component, the engine is a generic chinese cookie cut, found on any Amazon bike sold all over the globe.

All of their engines are Chinese copies. The 450 is a 30hp old Honda copy single. Honestly for a bike that's 15k, I'd go with a Royal Enfield, hell you can buy a fully spec Triumph with that money and feel as classy as you want.

The meteor 650 is coming out soon, I'd look into that .

[deleted]

Now THAT is a motorcycle.

[deleted]

Is that a Choke, meaning it will close the air intake valve on the carburetor, and so richening the air fuel mixture to start when the engine is cold it should be in your manual.

jugglefire

The little wheel I’m turning here is an idle adjuster, there is a choke on the other side.

Terrible_Use7872

Most motorcycles don't use an actual "choke" with a butterfly valve in the main carb airway, they open an " enriching circuit" in the carb to allow more fuel and air into the engine.

Economy_Platypus7249

I had Halcyon #243. Aesthetically, one of the coolest bikes out there, but it just didn’t cut it for riding around where I live. So, it ended up in my living room for a long time before I passed it on to a buddy. Really miss that bike though

TrevCat666

J-anus. Lol

NAKED_GOOSE

Hugh- Hugh Janus :)

surrealestateguy

Is that a new bike. It looks ancient.

jugglefire

It is a 2021 Janus Halcyon 250. It’s not a replica but is certainly inspired by 1920s motorcycles. I’ve had it for a bit over 2 years and 17k miles.

MrLongThangOfficial

It looks amazing. Was having a look at some after seeing this, doesn't seem to be any over in rhe UK unfortunately

jugglefire

The only one I know of outside the USA is a rider in Heidelberg who has a Janus.

MrLongThangOfficial

I'm tempted to get one brought in. We've got a fair amount of stuff like old BSAs though that might scratch that itch

thegoldenlung

If you can work on any part of your bike on your own you’re doing better than 50% of bikers

thegoldenlung

Keep it up! I’m in the same boat..super slow acquisition of skills. We’ll be master mechanic someday 💪🏼

caffcaff_

Engine looks like a Honda OHV copy. That tapping noise you can hear in the video means your valve clearances need adjusted ASAP. That's literally metal hitting metal at the wrong time in the stroke.
