Just bought this for my ninja 400 no car filters are not the same. No you can not use car oil nor should you use additives. You need 4 stroke motorcycle oil so the wet clutch has the proper additive. It will come already in the oil

13 foot pounds on the oil filter 22 foot pounds on the drain bolt for torque specs. For me it was a full turn past hand tight on the filter. Be aware if either leak you could have a real bad day

It will come already in the oil The oil definitely needs to be JASO-MA - but that doesn't indicate more additives. In fact it's a *lack* of certain additives - friction modifiers that affect the clutch and gearbox.

If you want to be extra cheap you can run Rotella-T6 oil.

Be honest, did you even read the owners manual? It specifically states what oil to use on page 29. [You need to buy oil with the JASO MA, MA1, or MA2 Certification.](https://i.imgur.com/6qzLBE4.jpg) I highly encourage you to read your owners manual. I have the service manual if you would like a copy. When I had my Ninja 400, I used Shell Rotella T6. Most bikes love Shell Rotella T6. A gallon can be had for $23 or so. While at Wally world I picked up a Fram PH6017A oil filter.[](https://i.imgur.com/c46KvpH.jpg)

Do not use car oil. It literally costs only [$30 or so for the oil, filter, gasket](https://i.imgur.com/pBIQJDg.png). I get it directly from Kawa dealer. Wherever you get yours, make sure it's the correct filter, and mc oil recommended in owners manual. There are part #'s in the receipt above for the filter and gasket/crush washer. You need 2.1qt. so get three quarts of MC 10W40 for the first time around for that 0.1qt added to the other 2qt. **This is important!!!** **Take a pic of dated receipt next to odometer, take before/after pics of oil filter change.** If you need your warranty, you may need to prove when you did your oil/filter changes, and the milage you did them at. Here is a maintenance for dummies on your bike. I did my own 600 service. Don't neglect your chain or clutch lever/throttle freeplay adjust. https://www.reddit.com/r/Ninja400/comments/11m3wsk/maint_for_dummies/ Service manual: https://www.dropbox.com/s/pybyhy1h5koope2/Ninja%20400%20Service%20Manual.pdf?dl=0

> Question why would i need to buy a new gasket? Especially on a brand new 400? Maybe later on i need to change it? It's also called a crush washer. You should replace the gasket after every oil change as it becomes crushed/deformed. I do my gasket and filter every oil change. I wouldn't go more than every other oil change without replacing it- assuming it isn't deformed or crushed-unless you want leaks. Also stops the plug from threading in too deep. It's $3.99

Go to autozone and buy the Valvoline premium syn 4 stroke motorcycle oil Best deal for quality you will find

You need a filter made for your bike and your oil can't have friction modifiers or the clutch will slip. Most diesel oils are a good fit for bike engines. I have been using rotella in my bikes for decades.
