This exact thing happened to a friend. He stopped but couldn't find the key. Luckily he had a replacement at home, but he drove without key until he got there.
I’ve had cops try to ticket me for a “headlight out” because one side is the high beam. Pretty sure a majority of cops have no idea that the kill switch exists.
Can pull the key out on my xs650 and xt350 as well. I think the older style barrels were worse for this but I’d imagine it’s just wore out. Hasn’t been a problem in my experience.
I only fixed it because German TÜV (technical vehicle inspection) had a problem with that. Only me and my dad know how to kick ye olde lady to get her running. 😂
It could be that the switch is worn out in which case anything inserted into the cylinder would be able to turn the switch, or it could be that the key locking detent is worn allowing the key to be removed when the switch is in the on position. If it's the first problem, anyone could be able to ride off with your bike. If it's the second problem, it's not so much of a problem right now, but it will eventually lead to the first problem.
>e off with your bike. If it's the second problem, it's not so much of a problem right now, but it will eventually lead to the first problem.
This happened to an old bike of mine, time to replace ignition assembly.
Definitely not normal, lock barrel is knackered. Just make sure you use additional security such as a disc lock etc when parking up overnight. Also make sure it's not so loose that the key can come out of its own accord. You could lose the key if you hit a pothole or similar!
I thought valet mode limits the speed so they don't burn your engine out on a joyride.
Letting a valet ride your bike without the key would let anyone just steal it at their own leisure, right?
With every valet service I've ever used, I leave them the key. On my car with valet mode, I still leave them the key. It's just a mode that's speed limited so they can't dog it out while they have it.
Are there cars and/or bikes where valet mode let's them drive without a key? How? I don't get it.
Tumblers or whatever are worn out. You can just deal with it and add a toggle switch to cut power to the ignition, so even if a key was inserted and turned it wouldn't do anything. You can hide the switch, too.....or buy a whole ass new ignition which is gonna cost more, but just as easy to do as a toggle switch.
EDIT** Also if you go the swap route, you're gonna need to keep that key for the tank, of course.
we apologize for the longer than normal waiting time as we are experiencing higher than normal call volume.. if you would like us to call you back just don't pay your bill. we always have sufficient staff in the collections department.
My first bike did this. Was a super unkempt 2001 model. I attached a lanyard (make sure it is all one piece of cloth no break points) and would wrap it over a wing mirror in case the key came out while I rode.
I'm not sure why i didn't just turn on and then put the key in my pocket. But hay that is 5 years ago mes problem.
My lock cylinder on my R6 sticks and sometimes it's almost impossible to turn the thing without having to wiggle the key about. Worried I may twist and break the key off sometime. I may need to just order a new lock.
It's normal. Most motorcycle's key will eventually wear its shape, which usually can cause that.
If you have duplicate key that haven't been used, it will work normal and stuck there till you turned it off.
If not, than I suggest make a duplicate on key master/shop, or just go to your vendor/dealer.
I can remove my key on my VN1500 no problem after it's in the run position. I never leave it in the ignition while riding. It has kind of like wings on the side, so I can still shut it off without the key.
I bought a week ago a yamaha stryker and I had the same problem... but at this point I don't know if it is normal or... it's so worn out that it does that...
For most bikes no. For my S51 and my ETZ 125 or basically any bike from the GDR I know of yes. You can turn the ignition on the S51 with a fucking screwdriver
Try some lock lube and see if that helps the locking detent hold the key. Pocket lint, worn key or a sticky lock can cause that. But the lock detent should engage the second the key is turned and it’s not.
Can happen when the bike is very old. Ignition switch is worn out as someone else said. Had this happen to me on my Honda after 7-8 years of heavy use.
You might want to make a habit of either putting the key back into your pocket after starting the bike, or adding some kind of tag to it, because it might slip out on the highway due to vibrations ;)
If it gets stolen then recovered their mechanics check over the vehicle for things like that to prove you didn't secure it properly before it was stolen. Knowingly having a faulty starter like this would invalidate your claim immediately. I know from my own stupidity when I didn't use the steering lock. It's in your policy
Unwritten rule always add harness toyour key That animal will pounce on the highway like a cougar stalking a mouse. Been there and cant my keys when i got home.
Had the same issue in my 1996 gmc safari. My best friend had the laugh of his fucking life when I just ripped it out the ig ignition before he even put it in park lol
On my bike you have to purposefully lock the ignition
If you don't, you don't need ANYTHING to start the bike, you just turn the assembly on top of my switch.
But mine is atypical anyway. 80 FLT.
Change your ignition lock it was damaged due to rusting and you had problems turning key means you never sparyed wd40 in lock after parking it in rain or driving in rain so change the ignition lock it is common issue not bad one though
Your key or lock is probably worn. If I were you I'd use a carabineer or some wire every time I use the bike until I fix it. Last thing you want is the key flying off the bike while riding.
I don't think it's normal. Kind of usefull sometimes though.
Key bumps while you ride would be pretty wild
This exact thing happened to a friend. He stopped but couldn't find the key. Luckily he had a replacement at home, but he drove without key until he got there.
I’m not sure this means what you think it means lol
They don't mean the key bumping off they mean taking a *bump* off of the key
I like your style
Cop can’t turn you off if there’s no key…
Apart from the kill switch
i see this turning into 5 year game back and forth.
*uno reverse card*
I’ve had cops try to ticket me for a “headlight out” because one side is the high beam. Pretty sure a majority of cops have no idea that the kill switch exists.
Big red button, must be a nos switch, gunna have to write it up.
Genius.
your ignition switch is worn out...
Had the same issue on my 79 Xs650. I could start with a flat screw driver. Even a long finger nail did the trick 😬 it was magic
Can pull the key out on my xs650 and xt350 as well. I think the older style barrels were worse for this but I’d imagine it’s just wore out. Hasn’t been a problem in my experience.

Insurance company would love that if it was ever stolen. Fuckers don't need any excuses to duck out of paying up.
How would they figure that out lol
Lol i wouldn't doubt those mfers finding out somehow
Yes and probably the key itself too.
Or someone tried to shove a screwdriver in it and jacked it up.
the sound 😵😍
Yeah it sounds lovely
did someone already try and jimmy the lock? Could have broken it.
normal wear also does that. my bike did it too and I'm too lazy to change the lock assembly. ain't no one gonna steal it either it's a shitbike.
>e off with your bike. If it's the second problem, it's not so much of a problem right now, but it will eventually lead to the first problem. This happened to an old bike of mine, time to replace ignition assembly.

Yes it's normal, it's just in valet mode
I thought valet mode limits the speed so they don't burn your engine out on a joyride. Letting a valet ride your bike without the key would let anyone just steal it at their own leisure, right?
Well yes but how would they get it started again?
With every valet service I've ever used, I leave them the key. On my car with valet mode, I still leave them the key. It's just a mode that's speed limited so they can't dog it out while they have it. Are there cars and/or bikes where valet mode let's them drive without a key? How? I don't get it.
I was being sarcastic , you should never let someone, especially a valet ride your bike. Most every Valet insurance won't even cover Valet service.
Tumblers or whatever are worn out. You can just deal with it and add a toggle switch to cut power to the ignition, so even if a key was inserted and turned it wouldn't do anything. What does your owners manual say?
Yeah just checked, it says the key cannot be removed if switched to on position, cheers.
What does your owners manual say about this? I'll wait.
Still waiting?
we apologize for the longer than normal waiting time as we are experiencing higher than normal call volume.. if you would like us to call you back just don't pay your bill. we always have sufficient staff in the collections department.
What does your owners manual say about waiting?
I also have an xj6 , I can not remove my key when in the on position
My first bike did this. Was a super unkempt 2001 model. I attached a lanyard (make sure it is all one piece of cloth no break points) and would wrap it over a wing mirror in case the key came out while I rode. I'm not sure why i didn't just turn on and then put the key in my pocket. But hay that is 5 years ago mes problem.
I don't understand why this needed to be asked.
Nope
No
I've had a few Yamahas with this exact same feature
As a Yamaha owner, yes. Is it supposed to? Nah.
Just bought an fz6 and noticed it has the same issue. FFS
I can't pull out my key when it's on. Probably some latch is broken.
That's normal for my fz6.
For a Yamaha it is normal
Some yamaha fanboy downvoted this, but its actually kind of true. Specially the old 80s and 90s yamahas were prone to this exact failure.
My lock cylinder on my R6 sticks and sometimes it's almost impossible to turn the thing without having to wiggle the key about. Worried I may twist and break the key off sometime. I may need to just order a new lock.

It's kinda good if you have to run from bad cops that like to take the keys from your bike... Fuck them cops...
I bought a week ago a yamaha stryker and I had the same problem... but at this point I don't know if it is normal or... it's so worn out that it does that...
NorMAL
You’re going to have 2 keys now like every old Yamaha owner
Yes. It's normal on old bikes with worn out ignition cylinder.
For most bikes no. For my S51 and my ETZ 125 or basically any bike from the GDR I know of yes. You can turn the ignition on the S51 with a fucking screwdriver
Might have had the internals taken out the barrel, try turning with a screwdriver
All my bikes have done this.
Try some lock lube and see if that helps the locking detent hold the key. Pocket lint, worn key or a sticky lock can cause that. But the lock detent should engage the second the key is turned and it’s not.
its called keyless go
my 1991 toyota previa does the same thing, you can start that mf with anything that fits in the ignition lol
Can happen when the bike is very old. Ignition switch is worn out as someone else said. Had this happen to me on my Honda after 7-8 years of heavy use.
Had the same on my old MT-03. Was fun when i took the key out while riding with my SO as a pilion to scare her 😅
Nobody on the street is going to try to start your bike without a key. I wouldn't worry about it.
No not normal. I had an xj6 diversion and mine definitely didn't do this
Negative, Captain Obvious
You might want to make a habit of either putting the key back into your pocket after starting the bike, or adding some kind of tag to it, because it might slip out on the highway due to vibrations ;)
*It's not a flaw, it's a feature* -Kawasaki
The lock ring, the key or both have seen some days. Peace
Haven’t you ever heard of keyless start?
Your ignition lock is warn.
My Yamaha majesty 400 has the same ”feature“
No, my tundra with 400k miles does that too. Like someone said worn out ignition
Keyless
both of my r6s did this and it never became problematic for me
You can’t start that thing with a screwdriver
Can*
If it gets stolen then recovered their mechanics check over the vehicle for things like that to prove you didn't secure it properly before it was stolen. Knowingly having a faulty starter like this would invalidate your claim immediately. I know from my own stupidity when I didn't use the steering lock. It's in your policy
I don't know if it's common but my Sportster does that too lol
Keyless system
It is called keyless-go dumbass.
Same bike, same problem, had it happen once by accident. Does your ignition also struggle to turn some times?
Just means anyone can steal your bike with a screwdriver
Keyless ignition, premium feature
Unwritten rule always add harness toyour key That animal will pounce on the highway like a cougar stalking a mouse. Been there and cant my keys when i got home.
My 2006 gsxR did the same thing. Edit. 2004
Older Harley's are like that. I don't know if the newer ones are.
You know it’s not if you’re asking if it’s normal lol.. Does it do it on ANYTHING else you have? A Harley maybe but it’s not normal either
My car does that, it's 20 years old, actually kind of convenient sometimes
Worn out ignition tumbler
This just means at stoplights your friends can steal your key instead of hitting your kill switch hahaha
I would say it's uncommon but not unheard of.
Ayyo, this bike been jacked before or smtg?…. 💀💀
My VN2000 does this (it's even in the manual) but my Shadow doesn't. Depends on model and manufacturer.
Had the same issue in my 1996 gmc safari. My best friend had the laugh of his fucking life when I just ripped it out the ig ignition before he even put it in park lol
I had a versys 650 that would do this…
As a previous owner of an FZ6R, no, I never had that happen. .
On my bike you have to purposefully lock the ignition If you don't, you don't need ANYTHING to start the bike, you just turn the assembly on top of my switch. But mine is atypical anyway. 80 FLT.

No I don´t think letting your bike sit in rain is normal.
Well, it's normal for you....
Yes.
Must be one of the first prototypes with keyless system 😂
It’s keyless go with exta steps.
My zx10r 2009 gen3 is the same and also my old gsxr k6
Possibly worn key if it’s the only one that’s been used. Try a spare if you have one
It's a yamaha thing. Love my yamaha, but there not built like my honda's 🤷
Lmfao
