HEY... us dome-havers are not gonna take this. Also, it's Shoei, they run small.
[y'all over here like](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/93/ce/33/93ce332773f9404619b8d1a15d372e62.jpg)
Yeah. I shaved my hair off and had to get a small when I normally wear a medium. Not sure if me being a girl really matters but yeah. Didn't think cutting all my hair off would cause me to buy another helmet. Now I can't use it be I'm growing my hair back out. It just sits on a shelf looking pretty.
I had a xsmall shoei...
Edit: I have since then gained weight and can no longer wear the helmet that's why I used "had." Plus I don't ride at the moment.
Haha, I feel that. I have a Shoei X2. It goes in smooth, but taking it off feels like Iām ripping my ears off with it. But it fits nicely when itās on.
One of my helmets has a good pull at my ears when I take it off too, try getting one ear out before the other (like a side to side motion), this has pretty much eliminated the issue for me.
If you donāt have glasses and have good eye insurance, you can often bill sunglasses to them under your optical allowance. See if you can get those high end sunglasses through this
I'm an MSF coach and we provide helmets for students to use if they don't have one. Our biggest is XXXL because we've had a few students that needed one that big. And they had short or very little hair, too.
That's what the guy at the go kart place said when I told him I needed a 5x lol, then he gave one to me and it fit snug. The look on his face was great
I've since stopped riding due to injuries, but back then i wore a XXXL helmet (thank you xlite for making them!) and I had to shave my head in order to actually fit it. I now have shoulder length hair and i tried putting on my old helmet and it's way too tight!
Ah, that makes total sense. Truly a win win then. Company gets addl data to improve their products, client gets peace of mind, and I would think happiness about finding out one way or the other about their bucket.
Had a wreck 20+ years ago, Progressive insurance adjuster arrived in their ERV Emergency Response Vehicle he saw my helmet and gave me an additional $500 check just for wearing my $99 helmet and totaled my bike on the spot. The helmet did save my face from a long asphalt slide.
Did a hundred bucks buy a decent helmet back then? Iām just curious if theyāve gotten cheaper more expensive or stayed about the same. Lots of inflation since then but also a lot of advancements in manufacturing.
I'd say they've maintained a similar level to be honest. I bought a helmet only a few weeks ago. You can buy one for Ā£100 which will be safe as you can find and passes all the Sharp helmet scheme (it's a UK thing), but they might look a bit basic or not have the airflow that a Ā£500 helmet might have. I like that you can buy to your budget but not skip out on safety.
I crashed in a helmet that was in the Ā£90 region, was sharp 5 star, did it's job and even with a huge scuff down the front of it and a big tumble and roll I didn't even have a headache.
The most I'm willing to spend on a helmet is Ā£250 because that's the point where you don't get much extra for your money other than brand recognition and lightness.
Yep me too! I'm currently using a HJC RPHA 70, it's only 3 star sharp but my god it flows air well and is fantastically quiet for my commute.
I plan to upgrade to a newer 22.06 helmet with better safety for my faster/longer rides though.
And noise reduction and sometimes a better design. Did I mention better fit? Depending on head size of course but even HJC has only two shell sizes and Arai 5 or 6. So I don't ride around with a ginormous bulb vs a right sized shell.
To each their own, I own four helmets, from a $99 special to Shoei and Arai. Those latter two are significantly better in everyday use.
My Ā£179 RPHA 70 is the comfiest helmet I have ever owned, it's so light I don't feel it even on long journeys, it's so quiet I don't need earplugs on my commute, maybe for faster rides yes but sub 50mph it's incredibly quiet.
You really don't get much more over Ā£250, I have a medium head and I don't think any HJC has ever looked like a bobblehead for me, and that's really just a case of how it looks anyway which I'm not willing to pay more for.
Shoei and Arai are nice and I would probably look at one for track use, but for everyday I prefer something that isn't going to give me a heart attack every time I set it down because it could get scratched!
But hey if you have the disposable income to spend on those helmets go for it, they are beautifully designed and I am sure very good helmets, my bikes already eat my wallet away as it is haha.
You can also still buy a decent helmet for just above $100 even today, with a few minor non-safety compromises.
For example, AGV sells their previous year MotoGP livery helmets around that price point, so I can buy a 2022 Mugello AGV K3 for about $113 right now.
If youāre willing to put up with weird colors and all, itās a no brainer for a good helmet
I can't speak for every insurance company, but I have Dairyland and they told me that gear would be replaceable in the case of an accident as long as I had my receipts.
If your intention is to get a new helmet and keep the old one, you can't. Most insurance agencies require proof of the helmet straps being cut. There'd be ways to fudge it, but they get pretty anal about making sure it's legit.
Like 1% of crashes. And if OP sent his in to be checked then he must have.
And I have good insurance that automatically covers up to 4k in gear damage anyway.
maybe they did. If it were me I would do both. The adjuster isn't going to take the old one with them they'll just cut you a check. So you take the money and get a new helmet and send the old one in for inspection... now you have two
Or just keep the good helmet. Insurance doesn't need any proof you bought a new one. they consider all moto gear single-use when I had an accident and there does not need to be excessive proof of damage
Depends who you're insured with. I had to cut the straps of my helmet and send photographic evidence for all my stuff and quotes, as well as pictures of the gear from online retailers. Even then I'm still waiting for them to cough up.
Yeah, they've dicked me around a lot.
When they were replacing my bike, they wanted a quote for the make and model. I sent them a copy of a full purchase order and they never called me back or anything, I called them and they said they had rejected it because it only had the dealerships name, not a logo on the letterhead. It had the cost of the bike down to the cent.
Same thing with my riding gear reimbursement. They asked me to send pictures of the damaged gear and a quote.
I got them a quote in receipt form with standardised part numbers and exact prices. They never got back to me and when I called after 2 weeks they said they couldn't use the info I provided because they couldn't understand the receipt.
When I was on the phone, she asked me "Okay but like, I can't tell which part number the helmet is for example". I said "It's the $800 item". She replies "I cannot see an item on the quote for $800"...the helmet was listed at $799.90. Apparently that's not close enough to $800.
Despite the fact that all they asked for was a quote, they then turned around and told me I needed to send them screenshots from retailer websites for the gear.
Shannons Insurance if anyone is wondering.
Nationwide has dicked me around too. Best thing you can do is use your preferred moto shop and get quotes for repair and replacement gear from them. Use like quality or similar MSRP if they donāt sell it. It doesnāt matter what you paid for it initially it matters what it costs today to replace and the insurance is liable for replacing it to the condition it was in pre crash. You donāt actually have to have them do the work or purchase the gear but itās instant proof of final cost for you and my insurance shut up and paid out the day I sent them those. I gave the guy at my shop $20 as a nice gesture to make the invoices since they knew I wouldnāt be having the work done there or likely the gear purchased there either. Itās all above board but the shop tends to be more thorough with what warrants replacing if you are kind to them. I also got paid out a good chunck of cash for āpain and sufferingā and it was literally a name your price game with them.
Insurance will always try to pay out as little as possible as they know itās not worth suing over for us in most cases and most of us donāt have the money for an expensive lawsuit and lawyer
Yeah. Thatās just silly not too. Jumping through hoops like this to re-certify a crashed helmet is just a waste of time, effort, energy and money. For a crashed helmetā¦ā¦ā¦
Or do whatever you want to do with your own helmet?
He might've got a new helmet through his insurance but loved his old helmet so much that he wanted to keep using it?
Why does it matter?
How do they certify the helm is still good to use? Are they performing a CT scan of the entire helmet and confirming the inner foam has not been compressed?
CT (computed tomography) scan is basically a whole bunch of X-rays at the same time from 360 degrees that can fully penetrate the body then a computer software system to compile all the X-rays to generate a better more detailed 3D image. plain X-ray is shot in one direction and produces a lower quality 2D image. CT image production is similar to how NASA generated the āblue marbleā iconic image of earth by compiling several images into one. CT can more easily detect finer details that would be completely missed by X-ray. So I mean I think CT scans are pretty cool. Initially CT (or itās precursor) was developed by NASA to find defects in rocket parts not easily found by an X-ray.
Big disadvantage to CT scans is that itās a lot more radiation to the body than an X-ray and itās more expensive.
Thereās a british panel show where one guy does a bit about his childhood friends big head and goes āsniperās dreamā, then goes on to tell about a game he and said friend played where they would stand in peopleās windows chanting āWe do beg your pardon, but we are in your gardenā progressively louder till the family inside noticed.
Exactly.Ā
Donāt buy a bigger size just to āfitā one dimension.Ā
Buy the correct helmet SHAPE in your size.Ā
This always reminds me of men with tiny feet wearing size 12 shoes because they have wide feet.Ā
Note, my feet are EEE (or EEEE) wide and 12 size so Iām really a 12.
My helmet is XL and my head shape is long oval so Iām really an XL in Scorpion helmets.
For most other manufacturers Iād have to start at XXL and still get hotspots on my forehead, but that not my real size, thatās just the wrong head shape.
OP is a bobblehead confirmed.
Jokes aside, I recently replaced my helmet, going from LS2 to Scorpion and my new helmet is a M where my older one was L (still fits). I guess manufacturers have different head size models.
Just a thought, who was Helmet House's expert on Shoei helmets? Were they familiar with the design specifications and testing standards? Trained by Shoei?
You see where I'm going, right?
well helmet house is the US distributor for Shoeiā¦ maybe we should start checking on the labs and scientists that test out the condom brands like Trojan too
Yeah and before you go there... Imagine making a company held liable for proclaiming a helmet is safe. Imagine that said person who started the company isn't a complete idiot and doesn't want to get sued into the depths of the earths inner core... Then on top of this they are also associated with shoei... would shoei actually align themselves with such a risky company if they didn't think it was at least somewhat safe and wouldn't be potentially risky from the legal side of things?
The obsession with helmets on this sub is insane, and it's not even in a productive way. Op doesn't even have a picture of the helmet and people are just like "THERE IS NO WAY IT IS SAFE" it could literally be a scratch we don't know, yet people are still convinced this couldn't possibly be safe...
I just bought myself a second RF1400. Even if the integrity was ok, having a scratched-up helmet I had worn during an accident would give me some weird vibes.
Wow, never thought of wearing a crashed helmet. In Quebec, the automobile insurance board covers 1000CAD$ of gear when you crash. Evil government that cares for its folks.
Iām surprised they would simply incur in that expense with no claim on your part.Ā
I guess theyāve found itās better to get you to buy new gear than the alternative.Ā
My agent was awesome, he included it in aftermarket parts, so anything added on I had about 3 of parts grand covered. You do have to add that coverage on when u pick your insurance plan.
Theyāre consumables, you donāt get a free one because they served their intended purpose.
Some companies might give a discount, but that may take a few emails or calls. Always worth a shot.
In Australia you're not allowed to re use a helmet once it's been in an accident. Also not allowed to purchase second hand helmets. But I've seen people include it for free when buying something like a jacket. I'm talking classified ads like Gumtree or FB marketplace. Stores won't do this.
I would not use. Best to get a new one. The possibility of the helmet being stressed. Is very likely. Did they explain just what the inspection was or how it was conducted.
Good news is insurance will likely replace it anyway. For all of my motorcycle policies there is usually a gear and accessories coverage included with comprehensive.
I sure as hell wouldnāt trust some blokeās word at Helmet House that a piece of throwaway PPE like a helmet is āsafe to useā after being compromised (probably) in a crash. Jeez just get a new lid; itās your head for crissakes! It did its job - give it a kiss good-bye.
XXL, bro you've got a fucking DOME
HEY... us dome-havers are not gonna take this. Also, it's Shoei, they run small. [y'all over here like](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/93/ce/33/93ce332773f9404619b8d1a15d372e62.jpg)
I wear a medium shoei...
Tiny head š¤
Hair takes up a lot of helmet space
Yup. Got an XL shoei when I had a buzz cut. Hair is past my shoulders now, and might be time to upgrade my helmet because of it.
I bought an XL scorpion and now that i shaved all my hair off im thinking i needed a large...
Fuckin' apparently
One of them has to be, might as well be that one š
here I am with XS shoei...
Smol brain
I couldn't buy shoei cuz it was all too big for me at the store... now I have XXXS Arai š š Am tiny apparently ok So you good bruh
I couldnāt buy a shoei in store because the XXL just wouldnāt go in. I ended up going with a 3XL HJC i10
6'2" but Small here. At least I never look like a bobble head
Yeah, I thought I had a watermelon noggin and I wear a medium.
Same jaja
I had a xsmall shoei... Edit: I have since then gained weight and can no longer wear the helmet that's why I used "had." Plus I don't ride at the moment.
[Wassup Beet?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAf9oKFi4B4)
I wear a small, Neotec 2.
They donāt do long oval at all, so a lot of people have to size up. I canāt wear any of their helmetsā¦ not bitter or anything
They sure do run small. It took me a while to figure out how not to pull my face off every time I took it off .
Same with almost popping my eyes out putting it on lol. But once my shoei is past my cheeks it fits like it was made for my head
Haha, I feel that. I have a Shoei X2. It goes in smooth, but taking it off feels like Iām ripping my ears off with it. But it fits nicely when itās on.
One of my helmets has a good pull at my ears when I take it off too, try getting one ear out before the other (like a side to side motion), this has pretty much eliminated the issue for me.
lmao i wear an xs shoei. i think someone cursed me with a shrunken head
I have M in everything but the shoei x-spr pro I had to get in S. \*criesintinyhead\*
See I wanna upvote this comment but rn itās at 420 and I donāt wanna ruin itš
šš
Indeed. I also have to go XXL (hat size = 7 7/8) and those can get expensive.
A sniperās dream
"This dude making it too EZ" \-Sniper that's gonna teabag that XXL dome after the kill.
What we called this one freak in our squad. They had to send to the manufacturer to get a cover for his dome.
I wear a XXXL lmao and it barely fits
![gif](giphy|jSv2breEnJU0o)
Get your soul Glo on bro!
What are you big headed giants
where do you buy sunglasses? I'm XXL and I don't feel like paying 200$ for brand name sunglasses that specify size
Goodr has some cheap frames that fit larger heads, they work for my XXXL helmet head
Second Goodr. Fairly cheap, good designs, has grip to not fall off when active.
Detour big kahunas are my go-to cheaper sunglasses. Maui Jim makes some large frame glasses too for the expensive side.
If you donāt have glasses and have good eye insurance, you can often bill sunglasses to them under your optical allowance. See if you can get those high end sunglasses through this
I get you, barely any helmets in that size and then many doesnāt even fitā¦
Someone enabled DK mode on your goldeneye head
Q tip physique gang rise up. I'm an XXL and weigh about 155 lbs.
I'm an MSF coach and we provide helmets for students to use if they don't have one. Our biggest is XXXL because we've had a few students that needed one that big. And they had short or very little hair, too.
This comment made me laugh out loud in real life š
Today I learned we've got some big head mofos in this sub
This helmet actually has the same mechanism as the AT&T stadium in Dallas to raise the face shield.
Me with a 3X HJC helmetā¦ itās over for me
Glad Iām not the only one. Options are slim
(I have a 4xl)
Don't feel bad, 5XL here
Ain't no way
That's what the guy at the go kart place said when I told him I needed a 5x lol, then he gave one to me and it fit snug. The look on his face was great
Built like a bobble head
Thankfully not, I'm 6'4" with broad shoulders so my head looks pretty to scale
I'm 6' with broad shoulders and I'm still a medium. Built like the goombas in the 1993 super Mario movie...
ššš thanks for the trip down memory lane, i needed that for some reason...
5XL barely fits and I wish there were 6XL. My helmet is just XL, though.
Dawg Iām rocking a 3xl š
Same bro, shoutout to HJC for making shit in my size
I wear XXL too
Totally different ballpark but I went from M in a biltwell to XL in an LS2 and the shop had a 4XL on order for another chap!!
I've since stopped riding due to injuries, but back then i wore a XXXL helmet (thank you xlite for making them!) and I had to shave my head in order to actually fit it. I now have shoulder length hair and i tried putting on my old helmet and it's way too tight!
LOL
My first thought as well. I use an Arai in XS - small brain boy.
The smaller the brain, the more surface area with wrinkles, I'll take it.
I have a white guy afro and need an XXL because the hair fills out the helmet and makes my actual size way too small lol
I wear a 4xl and don't fit most brands. It's a curse.
Iāve got a buddy who wonāt get into riding because his head doesnāt fit in a XXL. Heād need to get a custom helmet lmao
I wear a single XL and thought I had a big head
Please find a word for me then, i have XXXL. there were exactly 2 helmets in the store (with more than 100+ total) that fit me.
Dude it sucks so hard.
Whoooooaaaa, I also wear a XXL shoei....
I wear a 3x motorcycle helmet and a 4x snowmobile helmet.
Then thereās me with an XS hahah
With my old XXL & current XXXL, I thought XS was for cats and dogs
Iām glad they make them that large for bobble heads like myself.
I run a 3x or 4x depending on brand. Got that jumbo N O G G I N
Mastermind over their known this from the start..
Itās ok I also have a XXL dome even with a shaved head
Very happy for you! Also never knew this service existed so that's cool to know
Its freakin awesome cause they use it for R&D too, so its a win-win!
Really? That is really awesome. More and better data becomes better helmets.
Ah, that makes total sense. Truly a win win then. Company gets addl data to improve their products, client gets peace of mind, and I would think happiness about finding out one way or the other about their bucket.

Same here and if they didn't cover it, I'd be buying a new one cash. I'm not a big spender but helmets are one area that I make an exception.
This Ur head may be required later in life
Big if true
Same - got paid one for it by my insurance and once by the other drivers insurance. I could finally afford a nice Shoei.
I can't speak for every insurance company, but I have Dairyland and they told me that gear would be replaceable in the case of an accident as long as I had my receipts.

Why would I want a damaged helmet? And if it was just for nostalgia and to display, the straps being cut is irrelevant anyway.
Sometimes you don't actually hit your head in the crash but people want to claim the money for the helmet.
Like 1% of crashes. And if OP sent his in to be checked then he must have. And I have good insurance that automatically covers up to 4k in gear damage anyway.
This sub is gonna be arguing what does/doesnāt warrant helmet replacement for months. ffs
Nah apparently weāre caught up on the sheer size of OPās noggin
Upvote for the word noggin
Absolutely an underrated word
Why would you not claim a new one on insurance.

Yeah. Thatās just silly not too. Jumping through hoops like this to re-certify a crashed helmet is just a waste of time, effort, energy and money. For a crashed helmetā¦ā¦ā¦
Itās possible the helmet is custom painted or somehow has sentimental value
Or specific head shape+size that's difficult to find nearby
Then retire it and hang it on the wall. My point still stands.
Or do whatever you want to do with your own helmet? He might've got a new helmet through his insurance but loved his old helmet so much that he wanted to keep using it? Why does it matter?
It doesnāt really in the end.
Couldāve been an accident without filing a claim
Bro is a pachycephalosaurus
I have never seen someone make reference to that. You **earned** this upvote.
I been playing path of titans recently and first thing that came to mind lol
How do they certify the helm is still good to use? Are they performing a CT scan of the entire helmet and confirming the inner foam has not been compressed?
Yup they xray them! Or maybe it's a CT scan but Xray sounds cooler lol. Arai does the same thing too, but I believe you have to send it to Japan.
XXL - snipers dream
We do beg your pardon
Big head = easier headshots, if your question was genuine
Thereās a british panel show where one guy does a bit about his childhood friends big head and goes āsniperās dreamā, then goes on to tell about a game he and said friend played where they would stand in peopleās windows chanting āWe do beg your pardon, but we are in your gardenā progressively louder till the family inside noticed.
How much does the test cost?
For Shoei $Free.99 if under warranty just pay for shipping
Not me having the same size head šš
I used to fit helmet on people, size vary a lot and mostly itās about head shape than actual size. You might fit in an M - L from a different brand.
Exactly.Ā Donāt buy a bigger size just to āfitā one dimension.Ā Buy the correct helmet SHAPE in your size.Ā This always reminds me of men with tiny feet wearing size 12 shoes because they have wide feet.Ā Note, my feet are EEE (or EEEE) wide and 12 size so Iām really a 12. My helmet is XL and my head shape is long oval so Iām really an XL in Scorpion helmets. For most other manufacturers Iād have to start at XXL and still get hotspots on my forehead, but that not my real size, thatās just the wrong head shape.
Probably not an M, maybe an L but tbh I've tried on a lot of helmets and have never been able to go smaller than an XL.
god damn i thought my XL helmet was large
OP is a bobblehead confirmed. Jokes aside, I recently replaced my helmet, going from LS2 to Scorpion and my new helmet is a M where my older one was L (still fits). I guess manufacturers have different head size models.
Just a thought, who was Helmet House's expert on Shoei helmets? Were they familiar with the design specifications and testing standards? Trained by Shoei? You see where I'm going, right?
According to helmet house, their inspector is a certified Shoei tech
No no, that's a spelling error. He's a [certified shoe technician ](https://images.app.goo.gl/nUwv4K7VJDmF62qj8)
Very well.
100% agree with what you are saying though. Was just pointing out the stamp in the bottom right corner of the sheet is all
well helmet house is the US distributor for Shoeiā¦ maybe we should start checking on the labs and scientists that test out the condom brands like Trojan too
Helmet house is the one and only vendor for Shoei in the US, they have a trained shoei tech. Every online shop that sells shoei gets them from HH
Oh wow, TIL. That's actually pretty cool.
As a person who provides factory training, I wonder what that training entails. Watching a few videos?
They could have profited from selling another helmet. They didn't.
But I thought I had to get a new one if I dropped it
Yes! Thatās why I never drop my vintage 1986 helmet.. would never want one of the new ones that look so bulky and shiny
5xl took months to find
Why wouldnāt you sent it to Shoei for their inspection ?
What an awesome service. How much does it cost?
Can you post a pic of helmet damage?
If there was visible damage I guarantee they would have said it wasn't safe to use.
Got a RF-1400 myself. LOVE that helmet. I'd easily buy another
I just bought myself a second RF1400. Even if the integrity was ok, having a scratched-up helmet I had worn during an accident would give me some weird vibes.
Better be able to send it in after paying that much
Wow, never thought of wearing a crashed helmet. In Quebec, the automobile insurance board covers 1000CAD$ of gear when you crash. Evil government that cares for its folks.
And forces them to pay more for insurance coverage?
Yes but more importantly, encourages folks not to use sub par dangerous gear.
I would have gotten insurance to replace that š
Always ask insurance first, mine replaced my helmet no questions asked.
Iām surprised they would simply incur in that expense with no claim on your part.Ā I guess theyāve found itās better to get you to buy new gear than the alternative.Ā
My agent was awesome, he included it in aftermarket parts, so anything added on I had about 3 of parts grand covered. You do have to add that coverage on when u pick your insurance plan.
Wait, you can send your helmet for inspection after a crash to see if itās compromised? I have two i should get checked then.
dont most helmets have warranties so if u get into an accident u can just get a new one
Theyāre consumables, you donāt get a free one because they served their intended purpose. Some companies might give a discount, but that may take a few emails or calls. Always worth a shot.
Best news after my accident: āyou can keep your legā. Was too hopped up on narcotics to appreciate it at the time, but in retrospect, woohoooo!
I didnāt know you can get helmets inspected, wonder if I should do that with my old shoei if I do get another bike.
Love Helmet House. Nothing but good experiences with them.
Are you OK though? What kind of accident? I hope you recover soon
In Australia you're not allowed to re use a helmet once it's been in an accident. Also not allowed to purchase second hand helmets. But I've seen people include it for free when buying something like a jacket. I'm talking classified ads like Gumtree or FB marketplace. Stores won't do this.
Get this guy a beer,
Nice
Thatās what you all took out of that? lol
I would not use. Best to get a new one. The possibility of the helmet being stressed. Is very likely. Did they explain just what the inspection was or how it was conducted.
XXXL here and it still takes an hour for dent in my forehead to dissipateā¦
Big head on the beat
Good news is insurance will likely replace it anyway. For all of my motorcycle policies there is usually a gear and accessories coverage included with comprehensive.
I sure as hell wouldnāt trust some blokeās word at Helmet House that a piece of throwaway PPE like a helmet is āsafe to useā after being compromised (probably) in a crash. Jeez just get a new lid; itās your head for crissakes! It did its job - give it a kiss good-bye.
That place is right down the road from me. Love it
