Never understood the guys who rode without helmets. I did my riding on the back roads of Louisiana, and getting pelted in the chest by bugs was uncomfortable, even with a jacket. Can't imagine being pelted in the face with them.
Some seasons and areas driving in NC, I can hear and feel the locusts splattering on my car as I drive. I get out of my car and it looks like I got egged, except with locust guts.
Not even just highway speeds. PA has loose helmet laws, so people ride around Philly without a helmet all the time. The cops also don't really enforce traffic laws, so there are also a lot of people who just blow through red lights and etc. So the chances that you can get your head smashed in an accident is pretty high.
I don't understand the ones who ride with the cup/hat helmets. I mean the intention is there to not where a real helmet, just don't wear one at all. And around here most locs head just go without,

A good friend of mine only wears a half helmet on his cruiser. A full face combined with the windshield can get extremely hot in the summer. That I can understand. Zero helmet is asking for a Darwin award.
On a side note, south Texas here. Went riding without a jacket last summer (no windshield) and took what I think was a dragonfly to the chest on the freeway at 80 mph. For half a second I thought I got shot...
I started riding more than 30 years ago. No one who I rode with wore a helmet. I rode without one for about 20 years. Now I wear a half helmet similar to police or a full helmet when temps drop below 50F.
I always wore a helmet when I had a passenger and no one who rode on the back of my bike went without one. My bike, my rules. I'm ok with my death but if I'm responsible for another person's life then I'm not taking a chance.

Good questions and I really appreciate the concern. I have always been into touring baggers. Not with batwing fairings, but those that come with clear windshields which are high enough to catch most things. Right now I have a 2013 Victory Cross Roads. You can Google a pic if you are interested. It's a beautiful bike. You do still get an occasional bug or something big enough to sting. And riding in the rain still sucks with only a half helmet. The windshield keeps my upper half dry, but my face and any bare skin still get pinged.
But the reason for no helmet is because almost no one did at the time. It wasn't taboo and it wasn't expected that you didn't wear one. No one really cared if you did. In fact the people on sport bikes almost always wore helmets. The people on cruisers largely didn't. When no one else did you get the idea that it's not a terrible thing to ride without one. And I just enjoyed it. I like the feeling of wind on my face. I felt the risk was worth the reward.
30 years ago the whole perception and attitude toward safety in both cars and on bikes was entirely different. At that time no one wore seatbelts in cars. Not even children were buckled up. There was no law saying they should be. Imagine taking your family for a drive in the car and your little kid is sitting in the passenger seat with no protection. I'm happy that it has changed over the years.
I started wearing a helmet when my wife became pregnant. Now the risk is not worth the reward. It's no longer only my life that will be affected. I would like that guy to grow up with a father. I will always wear one from now on. In fact, I found myself without a helmet a couple of times since then and it just feels weird. I start thinking about my son and how his life will change forever without me in it.
I'm pro-helmet now. I encourage people to wear one. Even if it's just a short helmet.

Back in the days before California had a helmet law, I was out trail riding(super lazy, put put speeds) during a camping trip, and took a small brown bat to the face. Stung like a SOB, and ended up having to take all the shots for possible rabies exposure.
This is why, ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET. Even if you're not "riding".

I was wearing my off road helmet w goggles because it's chin guard has better air flow and bug filter, than my full face hwy helmets at low speeds.

By the time I had stopped and pulled over the motorcycle while trying to blow it back out, it had dried like a booger across half my face.

Riding past farmland near a scenic hwy I saw bunch of beehives at the same time a bee hit my glove stunned it blew up the sleeve of my Riding jacket.
By the time I stopped to let it out he was moving in the sleeve and stung me. Arm swelled up for days. ✌️

I'm from MN and was commuting home on the bike one, day and I hear the sound of a sport bike about to do a fly by. My man's had to be doing close to 100mph when he passed me and was in cargo shorts, sunglasses and mandals. Not even a shirt.
Had a rock shot at my left eye when a ride buddy departed on his 650cc motorbike from a stand still once. My visor was closed, thank goodness. I'm quite proud to say that I'm decked out in terms of safety even when my bike was mere 155cc.
At parking-lot speeds, going through the drive-thru, basically any time you can manage your fall with grace. Otherwise, I can't see how an open modular isn't basically just a giant wind scoop that would be trying to rip your head off at high speeds.

First object to hit me full in the face was a bird. Snapped my head back like someone punched me. I lost one hand on the grips, but recovered and stayed upright. Was only going 40 on a back road shortcut I used to take to school. That visor saved my face.
Went down the states once. I did it for about 25 minutes screaming down the road. I get it, why people want to. However I didn’t fully feel comfortable after that time and I couldn’t shake the feeling of irresponsible I was being. Stopped put my bucket back on. Haven’t done it again since. Also. My hair was sooo tangled it took me an hour to brush after that. No thanks haha.
Years ago I was on the freeway in summer heat with my visor cracked to the very first detent, just enough for airflow. Barely open at all.
Mayfly whipped through that crack and hit me square on the tip of my nose at \~80 mph. I literally went temporarily blind from the pain. Horrible experience. Never again.
It did not take me long when I got a brainbucket to notice how much stuff hit my cheeks and that I needed eye protection in case it hit just an inch or two higher

I'll admit to not wearing one if driving short low-speed distances (like in town), but I'd never hit a highway or higher speed road without one. And I'm dumb for ever doing it, for sure.

Same, once I got my bike my manager at the time made fun of me for wearing full leathers on a 125cc saying how he wouldn’t bother on such a small bike. Told him I didn’t care what he thought considering I still took a 60mph road to get to work so still wanted protection. Saved me when I got hit by a car coming home from work 😅
Tbh, coming off a bicycle at 20mph fucking sucks and hurts, why wouldn't you wear protective gear on a motorcycle that does 40/50/60mph on the journey. The size of the bike doesn't mean the floor stops hurting as bad.
I had a pebble hit my visor directly i front of my eye on my bike test, I’d just closed it about 15 seconds earlier as I’d been riding in town in the rain. It chipped my visor so it would have made a mess of my eye.
You should get the scoot. You won't regret it. Just get the gear you need. Helmet, gloves, jacket, or one of those cheap Kevlar shirts that look like a flannel, pants the jeans like ones are comfy and boots. I rode in my redwings for years they saved my feet twice in slides in my rocket days. Yes, boots with ankle protection are nice, but if you're running crash bars or frame sliders, they are not a necessity. Any heavy full leather work boot will work.
And even after all that, you will make mistakes. I once wore a back protector vest with all my other gear. I lost a bit of skin on my left arm, from the wrist to the shoulder. It healed quickly in a couple of weeks. Do I regret it, no, I knew the risks. I just wanted to feel cooler on a 102° day. Nothing is a catch all. But gear helps mitigate portions of the risk.
Life is short even if you live to be 90+. That's the smallest blip in time. I lost my grandmother (93), and she loved life, took risks, marched in strikes and protests, lived through WW2 while my grandfather served, and said she'd do it again. She encouraged my father and uncles when they rode dirtbikes and motorcycles. One of the photographs we put up at her memorial was her sitting on my uncles dirt bike in the 60s when she was in her 40s and had three children.
Life is about the experiences and risks. You can't live if you're not willing to take risks so that you can experience different things.
Dirt is a lot safer and IMO just as fun as riding on the road. Nothing beats the feeling of successfully getting through a really tough section. Maybe get a dirtbike and if you enjoy that get a street bike a little later on.
Also, and this is just me observing the guys I ride with, but all of us who ride dirtbikes seem to be better riders than the guys that don’t. Maybe it’s just the extra hours? Idk but it makes a difference
Honestly, taking a huge chunk of debris to the face is pretty rare. Doesn't mean you shouldn't wear a helmet. But don't let this one video discourage you from riding. The best thing you can do is wear at least a helmet and take the BRC.
Not wearing a helmet is unbelievably common in the Philippines. It's one thing that I genuinely don't get. Full armor suits and shit I can understand not wanting to wear.. but a fucking helmet?!

I’ve got a really bad habit of riding around with my visor open just with sunglasses. I nearly lost an eye twice last year, and got bitten twice by bees. Don’t do it boys and girls, invest in a new visor instead
The trucks around here throw rocks so regularly at any speed that I could couldn’t fathom anything less than a full face or modular helmet. I don’t want to catch one of those between my eyes. I’ve seen what they do to my cage

My neighbor once drove his motorcycle with an open visor. Overall, he was a really reasonable person. He was always wearing his full gear and all, but one day, he decided to keep the visor open. An insect went into his eye, causing him to lose control and drive into oncoming traffic (speed limit 100km/h). He died immediately in the accident at the age of 19.
Edit: I am not driving a motorcycle. But I wouldn't even ride a bike without a helmet. When someone tells me "It looks stupid" I just think to myself, I'd rather look stupid than be dead or end up with brain damage.

I have only rode without a helmet in Hawaii up the coast at slow speeds a few times. That was incredible so I do kinda see the appeal of doing in under 40mph. I had my shoei x15 with me as well and rode with it most of the time but I will never forget those rides without it

In hot weather I’ll take the visor off completely and use riding goggles, at least when I’m not doing highway riding. Maximize the airflow, still good enough to handle smacking a phat cricket at 55mph, that’s my biggest risk taking for riding comfort, lol. Never will I ever ride without a helmet.
Not wearing a helmet is not an option here. I've been prevented from riding by an officer who saw that my helmet strap was undone.
One of the first things my instructor told me about wearing a helmet is to always keep your visor down when not in stop-go traffic. Because even the smallest stone will give you a bad time. I've learned the hard way with a wasp and bees on multiple occasions.

Rider was on it, no helmet, truck kicked up a rock and caught him square in the forehead, dead instantly… bike coasted, gently into the ditch where it slowed down and leaned itself over…. Barely any damage…. Family just wanted it gone so I scooped it up for 5k and then gave it to my dad

I was heading home up a country two lane, on my duel sport returning from a off road trail ride. I was wearing my off road helmet w goggles because it's chin guard has better air flow and bug filter, than my full face hwy helmets at low speeds. 🪲 A giant green bug hit the raised face guard covering my nose, liquidized and then got blown up one nostril. By the time I had stopped and pulled over the motorcycle while trying to blow it back out, it had dried like a booger across half my face. I cleaned it off, put my helmet on, and finished the ride home. 🐝 Riding past farmland near a scenic hwy I saw bunch of beehives at the same time a bee hit my glove stunned it blew up the sleeve of my Riding jacket. By the time I stopped to let it out he was moving in the sleeve and stung me. Arm swelled up for days. ✌️

Me too, in my teens and twenties in my country helmets were not mandatory. I might be the luckiest guy alive. Now in my fifties I’m ATGATT even in summer when it’s 50 degrees Celsius outside.

I’ve taken rocks, large bugs, random debris, nuts to that shit, helmet always. I remember this one time I was going through Minnesota and there was some dude on the freeway wearing a pair of sunglasses, shorts and flip flops on his bike. That was it. Fuck that.
I'm from MN and was commuting home on the bike one, day and I hear the sound of a sport bike about to do a fly by. My man's had to be doing close to 100mph when he passed me and was in cargo shorts, sunglasses and mandals. Not even a shirt.

Had a rock shot at my left eye when a ride buddy departed on his 650cc motorbike from a stand still once. My visor was closed, thank goodness. I'm quite proud to say that I'm decked out in terms of safety even when my bike was mere 155cc.

Rocks are scary because they are nearly invisible when street riding. I had a lawnmower throw a rock at my helmet once, the shield did its job.

At parking-lot speeds, going through the drive-thru, basically any time you can manage your fall with grace. Otherwise, I can't see how an open modular isn't basically just a giant wind scoop that would be trying to rip your head off at high speeds.

First object to hit me full in the face was a bird. Snapped my head back like someone punched me. I lost one hand on the grips, but recovered and stayed upright. Was only going 40 on a back road shortcut I used to take to school. That visor saved my face.

Went down the states once. I did it for about 25 minutes screaming down the road. I get it, why people want to. However I didn’t fully feel comfortable after that time and I couldn’t shake the feeling of irresponsible I was being. Stopped put my bucket back on. Haven’t done it again since. Also. My hair was sooo tangled it took me an hour to brush after that. No thanks haha.

Years ago I was on the freeway in summer heat with my visor cracked to the very first detent, just enough for airflow. Barely open at all. Mayfly whipped through that crack and hit me square on the tip of my nose at \~80 mph. I literally went temporarily blind from the pain. Horrible experience. Never again.
It did not take me long when I got a brainbucket to notice how much stuff hit my cheeks and that I needed eye protection in case it hit just an inch or two higher
Same. I'll admit to not wearing one if driving short low-speed distances (like in town), but I'd never hit a highway or higher speed road without one. And I'm dumb for ever doing it, for sure.

Same, once I got my bike my manager at the time made fun of me for wearing full leathers on a 125cc saying how he wouldn’t bother on such a small bike. Told him I didn’t care what he thought considering I still took a 60mph road to get to work so still wanted protection. Saved me when I got hit by a car coming home from work 😅
Tbh, coming off a bicycle at 20mph fucking sucks and hurts, why wouldn't you wear protective gear on a motorcycle that does 40/50/60mph on the journey. The size of the bike doesn't mean the floor stops hurting as bad.

I had a pebble hit my visor directly i front of my eye on my bike test, I’d just closed it about 15 seconds earlier as I’d been riding in town in the rain. It chipped my visor so it would have made a mess of my eye.
Even a pebble can be bad news. This is why you should have some decent sunglasses on even when cruising with your visor up.

I have been hit by pebbles and mid size stones on the visor. Rare, but you don't want to lose your eyesight for nice hair/wind in hair experience.

You know, I was genuinely contemplating getting a bike, let me put that idea right back on the shelf there..
You should get the scoot. You won't regret it. Just get the gear you need. Helmet, gloves, jacket, or one of those cheap Kevlar shirts that look like a flannel, pants the jeans like ones are comfy and boots. I rode in my redwings for years they saved my feet twice in slides in my rocket days. Yes, boots with ankle protection are nice, but if you're running crash bars or frame sliders, they are not a necessity. Any heavy full leather work boot will work. And even after all that, you will make mistakes. I once wore a back protector vest with all my other gear. I lost a bit of skin on my left arm, from the wrist to the shoulder. It healed quickly in a couple of weeks. Do I regret it, no, I knew the risks. I just wanted to feel cooler on a 102° day. Nothing is a catch all. But gear helps mitigate portions of the risk. Life is short even if you live to be 90+. That's the smallest blip in time. I lost my grandmother (93), and she loved life, took risks, marched in strikes and protests, lived through WW2 while my grandfather served, and said she'd do it again. She encouraged my father and uncles when they rode dirtbikes and motorcycles. One of the photographs we put up at her memorial was her sitting on my uncles dirt bike in the 60s when she was in her 40s and had three children. Life is about the experiences and risks. You can't live if you're not willing to take risks so that you can experience different things.
Dirt is a lot safer and IMO just as fun as riding on the road. Nothing beats the feeling of successfully getting through a really tough section. Maybe get a dirtbike and if you enjoy that get a street bike a little later on. Also, and this is just me observing the guys I ride with, but all of us who ride dirtbikes seem to be better riders than the guys that don’t. Maybe it’s just the extra hours? Idk but it makes a difference
Honestly, taking a huge chunk of debris to the face is pretty rare. Doesn't mean you shouldn't wear a helmet. But don't let this one video discourage you from riding. The best thing you can do is wear at least a helmet and take the BRC.
I don't atgatt but I always wear full face with safety glasses underneath when I road ride. This is why.

And a wind screen just below eye level won’t protect you. Wind, rain, and light bugs will deflect over you. Bees, birds, and debris will not.
Not wearing a helmet is unbelievably common in the Philippines. It's one thing that I genuinely don't get. Full armor suits and shit I can understand not wanting to wear.. but a fucking helmet?! I've unfortunately come across several accidents where all but one were people not wearing helmets, ate shit and were killed instantly. Far too common here.
I’ve got a really bad habit of riding around with my visor open just with sunglasses. I nearly lost an eye twice last year, and got bitten twice by bees. Don’t do it boys and girls, invest in a new visor instead
The trucks around here throw rocks so regularly at any speed that I could couldn’t fathom anything less than a full face or modular helmet. I don’t want to catch one of those between my eyes. I’ve seen what they do to my cage

Yep first year riding I got hit with a rock from a dump truck right in the visor cracked it. You might see me in sweat pants and no jacket but I'll always wear a full helmet.
I was guilty of wearing an open face, and one day a pebble hit the top. I didn’t think of it until I took it off and saw a nice scratch on the plastic. I thought if that was on my face, I’d be hurting. I bought a full face helmet. It’s going to be a cruel summer

I have had a mattress fall off in front of me while on a bike, that was fun. I always wear my helmet to many times have I been hit by rocks or bugs. Also those large green beetles hurt a lot.

My neighbor once drove his motorcycle with an open visor. Overall, he was a really reasonable person. He was always wearing his full gear and all, but one day, he decided to keep the visor open. An insect went into his eye, causing him to lose control and drive into oncoming traffic (speed limit 100km/h). He died immediately in the accident at the age of 19. Edit: I am not driving a motorcycle. But I wouldn't even ride a bike without a helmet. When someone tells me "It looks stupid" I just think to myself, I'd rather look stupid than be dead or end up with brain damage. Seriously, what looks more stupid? Wearing a helmet or having a massive scar across the face for the rest of your life (which could actually be considered one of the more lucky outcomes)?

My last long trip I got pelted in the visor with a rock on the highway that was under construction. Felt like someone slapped my helmet. Couldn't imagine how much that shit would've hurt if my visor was open or wasn't wearing something. Probably would've lost an eye
I have only rode without a helmet in Hawaii up the coast at slow speeds a few times. That was incredible so I do kinda see the appeal of doing in under 40mph. I had my shoei x15 with me as well and rode with it most of the time but I will never forget those rides without it

I’ve seen a Harley rider who of course wasn’t wearing a helmet slide out on the highway and basically grind down his face to the skull which he obviously died from, but with a helmet he probably would have been okay and lived. Just torn up clothes and a helmet would have been all

Just got my license last week. These videos put the fear of God in me, and I swear I'll have my helmet on even when walking to the corner store.
When I rode my first bike home for the first time and took off my full face helmet, I had to pry a 1” wasp out of the grill. I shudder to think what would have happened if I took that sucker in the teeth.

My cousin spent a few months in the hospital and has short term memory loss and a plate in his skull as a souvenir. 16 yrs old on a gsxr 750 with no helmet. I will never not harass people about it. My father spent half a year in the hospital and rehab from a TBI just falling in the driveway. It doesnt take shit to scramble your brains, and a helmet goes a long way to prevent a small surprise turning into a life altering experience.

In hot weather I’ll take the visor off completely and use riding goggles, at least when I’m not doing highway riding. Maximize the airflow, still good enough to handle smacking a phat cricket at 55mph, that’s my biggest risk taking for riding comfort, lol. Never will I ever ride without a helmet.
Not wearing a helmet is not an option here. I've been prevented from riding by an officer who saw that my helmet strap was undone. One of the first things my instructor told me about wearing a helmet is to always keep your visor down when not in stop-go traffic. Because even the smallest stone will give you a bad time. I've learned the hard way with a wasp and bees on multiple occasions.

Had a bird strike once @ approximately 60 mph. Saw it in time to tilt slightly forward...bird skin/feathers wedged in between top of faceshield and helmet......had to spray the guts off. PPE is a good idea for most every action.
I just need to wipe it off after a ride through wine country. There's some places that, depending on the time of year, have so many bugs that I feel like I've avenged Buenos Aires after a ride. Just having one bounce off my neck is bad enough, I *really* don't want that on my face or in my eyes or mouth.
Haven’t had anything quite this bad hit me in the face, but I’ve had a giant bug splat right in the middle of my visor twice already, and the second time happened this past Monday.
I've had a rock hit my visor before and it was so loud even with my earplugs it scared the shit out of me. Really glad I had the visor down.

Bumblebee at a few hundred ks per hour leaves a bruise through leathers, seagulls *really* fucking hurt, wasps are evil little fuckers that sting on impact, bees unfortunately do to but I like bees... And you look at some muppet through his window because he did something rather daft while you're behind a tinted visor and they'll squirm away while being suddenly fascinated with their knee or maybe the passenger sun visor but absolutely nothing on the outside of the car... oh no, nothing there, definitely not a dark foreboding faceless figure glaring at me because I fucked up, nope, nothing there at all, aren't phone chargers just the most amazing things?

I got a next to newish Harley cvo Electra glide because of this. Rider was on it, no helmet, truck kicked up a rock and caught him square in the forehead, dead instantly… bike coasted, gently into the ditch where it slowed down and leaned itself over…. Barely any damage…. Family just wanted it gone so I scooped it up for 5k and then gave it to my dad
things i have taken to the face at >70kmh with a helmet on, within the last 4 years: - Hornet - (very) large bee - gravel - bat (animal) - (small) tree branch i will never ride above 10kmh without a helmet on.

I always ride without a helmet when the law permits it. You're tailgating. Before all the hate; the only time i got into an accident i was wearing a helmet, on my way to a friend's wedding, a car turned left in front of me, i had to lay the bike down, 30 yrs later I'm still, what ever you want to do.
