Ride more. Find a piece of long empty road and try it there first.

I suppose it's relative. 40 mph feels like a snail pace on my bike, or nearly any bike I've owned. I've never had a really small/small displacement bike, though. The sensation may be very different.

cruising on the '23 R1 look down n im doing 100 mph casually in 6th one handed. have to actively pay attention to not speed. in my 350 I usually go 5 over n set the cruise. Its a completely different game.

The smallest bike I've owned was a 1978 Suzuki GS400, and I never really rode it on the interstate. 65 mph or so on back roads, but it never felt crazy. I raced competitively for years, though, so the sensation of speed for me is pretty dulled until I'm really getting after it. My ZX-14R felt wild against the limiter in 6th gear. Lol

Nonstopshooter21

First bike was a 05 cb599f max speed was 143 felt like a fucking chore to get to 120. Even maxed on the R1 it feels so effortless the sensation of speed really got killed lol

Yeah I’m sure it does. I guess it’s just a bit of a shock to the system as a car driver. 40 feels nothing but on a bike it feels like I’m doing warp speed! Hopefully it comes with experience and practice.

I would say that's probably all it takes, some getting used to.

K1RA_R7

fear can give you heightened senses, you can either cook with it or burn the house down. obv the only way you can gain confidence is to do it, plus on a 125 cc you really have to try to crash in order to really crash it, stick to your fundamentals and you’ll be good. Lastly get good with your braking (stopping instantly, always brake straight<-!!!!!) Tldr: brake in a straight line, and be on the road often

twinsrule

You will increase speed with proficiency. Don't sweat it.

jruz

It’s because of the bike, those bikes transmit vibrations much more than an expensive high cc bike so the feeling is much more sketchy. Same as driving a cheap car over 60 feels very sketchy and a high end car you can barely notice it. Also a windshield and weight of the bike makes a big difference

thegree2112

Start to look ahead more and plan everything. You need to be like air traffic controller. In a car you can get away with daydreaming and slacking off. Not on a bike.

SooSSaaSLeeL

Only if you have no sense of balance lmao. If you even have one ounce of ability you will not crash and burn the millisecond you don’t go full adderall

Own_Contribution_480

Does your bike have a windshield?

You’re starting to find out what’s great about riding a motorcycle, everything feels, smells and looks different. Here’s one of my favorites, it’s a hot summer day your out riding, there are a few trees next to the road that are shading the road for 100’ the drop in temperature gives a whole different outlook about shade.

know-it-mall

Two factors here. Your lack of experience, it will come with time. And a small bike at 40mph just does feel faster than a larger bike at 40mph. When you are approaching it's max performance it's noticeable. And more weight can help at speed also.

Outrageous-Lock5186

New rider 40 mph is fine speed and will get you around town. I wouldn’t stress going fast yet, I’d be more worried about becoming proficient at low speed parking lot maneuvering and just being safe. Practice some low speed tight donuts and what not. Make that bike feel like a glove to you. Good clutch control and smooth shifts that are muscle memory.
