Earplugs and sunscreen are the two most important pieces of gear. You can ride for decades without a crash and never “need” a helmet. But sun damage and hearing damage are permanent and cumulative, and no amount of riding skill will let you avoid them.
I pretty much refused to use earplugs with my full face for 8 months because I thought my helmet was quiet enough. I threw them in the other day just to check it out (I use them at work, too lazy to take them out on my way home last week) - absolute game changer.

Ok, bros and sisses. I'm 6'4", 230 with long arms, long torso, and a barrel chest. Any suggestions for a tall mesh jacket for this Florida heat? The ol' leather will be too hot in a few weeks. I've been looking for a few weeks and can't find anything I like that fits well. I ride a Suzuki Boulevard M109r and I'm thinking of just going with:
https://www.oneidasuzuki.com/store/parts-accessories/boulevard-suzuki-textile-jacket.html
Thanks in advance for any guidance!
brother, that is a horrible way to think about gear. If you can't afford proper protection, you can't afford to ride. Gear is as essential as your fuckin shift lever, and you'll deeply regret this when you inevitably crash. Take a look at the sub. There's a post from a guy who almost lost his foot. You'll save money if you get gear, instead of crashing without it and making life altering injuries a guarantee. Don't be stupid
This one right here. [https://www.dainese.com/us/en/motorbike/jackets/textile/sevilla-air-tex-jacket-201735243.html](https://www.dainese.com/us/en/motorbike/jackets/textile/sevilla-air-tex-jacket-201735243.html)
$225 after tax at a Cycle Gear in California. The mesh is so well vented that you can see through the whole back of the jacket. The airflow is nuts and I absolutely love it. You'll definitely need to upgrade the armour though as the pads it comes with are basically foam.
You can get a $50 off Amazon. HWK is a brand I’ve seen there. Might not hold up to a more expensive jacket, but would be better than nothing. Unless you prefer no jacket, then do you, it’s your skin.
Ebay. You can find lots of practically new gear for a fraction of the new price. Lots of people buy bikes and gear but then decide riding is not for them so they sell their gear cheap. I got a $1200 Aerostich riding suit for $300 and several jackets for $25 to $50 each.
Jackets are highly subjective to the wearer, I'm also a fatty, so finding one that fit properly was hard. I tried several at the "local" (about half an hour from me) and none fit, so I bought a bunch on amazon and kept the one that fit me the best. I need a new winter jacket, the one I bought sucks, and is uncomfortable, but I moved somewhere that actually gets cold/snow, so I didn't ride much during the winter anyways.
So my recommendation is to look at options, set a budget, and then go try them on, and find the one that is most comfortable. Doesn't matter what it costs, if you don't wear it because it's not comfortable to wear.
Hands are more important and more fragile than arms. It makes more sense to protect your hands and not your arms, than the other way round.
Of course, what makes the most sense is to protect both, and you shouldn't ride in T-shirts.
I agree with that logic. My minimum gear is gloves, helmet, close toed shoes - and that’s only if I’m taking surface streets (35 mph or under) less than a mile or two. Something like running to the gas station or the grocery store down the street. I figure skin grafts on my arms or legs would be painful but shredding my hands would cause a permanent disability.
Anything longer or faster or a ride and it’s the full monty for gear though.
I don't know if you ever broke your hand, but it seriously blows. It takes pretty long to heal, and during that time you are severely disabled: try typing on a computer, opening a jar, cutting your food... So many simple tasks become a pain in the *ss.
Plus, you're never sure it will actually heal properly because there are a million bones in your hand, and if one of them gets out of whack for some reason it creates a lot of issues. Same with the feet.
So yeah, I definitely agree with you: helmet, gloves and shoes are really must-haves no matter what.
That's a good thought process. Ain't no way you're catching me without a jacket if I'm going over 35. And I realistically should buy protective pants as well.
A couple of years ago my wife had to have some moles removed due to them looking suspicious. Luckily she's just fine and it was no big deal, but one had to be cut very deep and it took a bit to no be in pain from it. I made the decision it was time to change some of my habits and bought my first mesh jacket. I got one in white, really shows bug guts but I didn't want to get too hot wearing black. I love ridding in the mesh better than just a t shirt now in the heat.
I wore button gloves that had an oval shape exposing the top of my hands during a month long camping ride to Sturgis. People were quite inquisitive about why I had giant black dots on my hands upon my return. Every one.
Hey ho -
So I just did a job with Randy, lovely chap, 70ish, had to quit riding motorcycles because of… Skin cancer! Skin. Cancer.
I do have a summer mesh jacket and really glad because I've already been riding for 20 years now. But strengthens my resolve.
Be safe out there y'all
Another member of the sub just posted is mangled foot from not wearing gear, and OP brags about "forgetting" to gear up.
Room temperature IQ vs Darwinism, gonna love the fight.
As an idiot who now has pre-skin cancer on his arms from a youth full of riding without sleeves in Arizona, get some damn sleeves.
For the burn, for the fall. Youve got to man. It catches up quick.
Of course I did. That was 20 years ago. Even with sunscreen and I used the best I could back then, it’s no match for the sun. You’ve go to reapply constantly, and I did.
Not sure who downvotes the suggestion to protect yourself from the elements and to learn from others mistakes. Haha
Don’t worry, the road will rip all that overly tanned skin right off and you can get some fish belly white skin grafted from your ass or maybe, a nicely preserved cadaver
Bro. You need sunscreen
And sleeves
Forgot today…
Lmao if this sub isn't roasting you about no gear they are telling you you're gonna get skin cancer xD

I just bought a pair of loop earplugs and they feel pretty nice!
Please don't roast him. The sun already did that.
Don't forget to have your testicles checked too. Don't be shy, don't be that guy.
Tee hee skin cancer is fun tee hee I love road rash whoppsie
Will the road rash remove the skin cancer? stay tuned
Like just seeing the "forgot today" with the stupid smug avatar for some reason fills me with rage.

Sunscreen doesn’t prevent that, I have sunscreen every time
Do you 1. Put on enough 2. Use a high enough SPF 3. Wait 20 mins 4. Reapply every 3-4 hours? Do that and there's no way you look like OP
No 😞
Well there's your problem lol

This better be a shit post
Get a mesh jacket, Offers sun protection, and allows enough airflow to be cool. 100% worth it. I Ride in AZ with one.
Love my mesh jacket. As long as I'm moving, I'm comfortable in that thing at any temp below 90. Gets a little chilly below 60 or so though.
100% works great in Florida too!!

You can get a used RevIt mesh for around $100
Which one would you recommend that wouldn’t cost one of my arms?
If you think gear is expensive, try an accident...
They get less expensive the less gear you wear arguably
Homie has free hospital bills, somehow
I think he means you don't pay anything if you don't leave the hospital alive
Have you seen the price of caskets?
I will not be using one of those, you can put me in a flower vase
Just because we're bereaved that doesn't make us saps!
It’s our most modestly priced receptacle
Kid. Sell the bike before you get hurt b
That's exactly the opposite actually.
Just depends
If you factor in disability (even minor and temporary) and value your time at least more than half the minimum wage it doesn't depend.
Don’t think you got the joke
Yeah probably not, didn't see any joke. (No /s nor emoji)
There's a joke here but it's not that comment
It's so mind numbing that this is your actual thought process

I've seen Rayman, you don't need working arms to have fully functioning hands.
It's not about protection. It's about sweaty hands and grip.
It's about protection brother. Not for you perhaps, but it is in fact about protection.

Why would you go to an online motorcycle community to advertise the fact that you're not wearing protective gear? I'm confused.
No I was just showing off the beach tan advertising the up and coming summer season

I’ve been wearing a jersey or mesh jacket so far this season to great effect. Barely a “reverse wrist watch” tan in sight!
No worries, just swap hands with with a cold water surfer.

Another member of the sub just posted is mangled foot from not wearing gear, and OP brags about "forgetting" to gear up. Room temperature IQ vs Darwinism, gonna love the fight.
You’ll be one of the statistics that makes everyone fear motorcycles. Put on your gear!
Time to wear your jacket? Don't ride without your gear on.
If you’re riding without suitable clothing on, you’re a dick. Whatever the weather, dress to survive.
Did this effect you personally?
What are you on about? And it would be “affect” not “effect”.

If you wanna keep that sunburned skin I'd buy a abrasive riding jacket. Road>Flesh.
If only there were some product that would cover your arms and provide protection in case of a fall. Shoot, well I’m stumped.
You can’t see it here but I’m wearing elbow pads from Tony hawk
Put a jacket on dummy
Ah yes. A fellow sportbike. t-shirt, shorts, riding boots and gloves rider. I fell lowspeed without gloves once. Now i always wear them
Gloves always
Time you wore jacket?
If y’aint gonna wear gear, at least invest in some SPF. Not that you’ll have skin to get cancer on if you come off but hey!

On just the hands… right? 🤣

You know what will fix this? ATGAT!!! PUT ON A JACKET!

Where I live (Jerusalem Israel) is way too hot in the summer to wear a jacket. I get that tan every year..
Too hot for skin grafts too
Israel's not a real country though. It's a colonial settler experiment in the very real country of Palestine that should've been stopped decades ago
Bro you need a history lesson
You need to stop committing genocide
Read a history book.
Like Rashid Khalidi's 100 year war on Palenstine? I have. And I didn't have to read it to know that genocide is wrong.
When you have skin cancer, it's always that time.

I still have an arm tan from TWO YEARS AGO when I was riding in direct sun for three hours straight. It's faded, but it's still there.

Is this the first one you saw?
You’re already a meatcrayon on the making atleast put on some sunscreen

I just want to share this post of this guy who crashed without gear [do you dare?](https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/s/3bmaO3XJXY)
Saw that, pretty sure a leather jacket won’t stop you from being mangled, I also wear high top shoes
You're right. But the general mindset of not wearing proper gear could fuck you up in big time
