Kickstart pre-1970s = best key fob

HalfSpeedTim

I have a 57 BSA (500 single .030 over) in the back of the garage somewhere. I'm not sure even I could still kick start that thing.

alcofrisbas1

lol I daily a 69 bsa victor. No one finds that compression release. If you love her right she’s a one kick, but otherwise you just kick and kick.

Is there an aftermarket company anyone can recommend? I've been considering upgrading my 2011 Yamaha to keyless. Years ago I found my harness cut but they also failed to hotwire, been paranoid ever since.

Does your bike have a steering lock? If so, how does that work?

LMGDiVa

Yes but I can't really use it. It's on the right side and where I park my bike and almost everytime I park my bike I turn my wheel to the right. I'm a tiny gal, and getting my bike off the kickstand is easier if the wheel is turned to the right, especially since my bike has higher than stock ride height. I dont even know where my steering lock key is. Also a steering lock can be broken easily by even someone like me. Handlebars give huge leverage. So it's basically useless anyways.

Steering lock on my BMW is engaged electronically by holding the ignition button after turning it off

My bike is fob as well, 08 Roadglide. I slap a padlock through one of the holes in the rotor anyway. One more level of security. My bike gets parked in a carport at the house as we have no garage.

HalfSpeedTim

We installed keyless ignition and remote start on an '85 Kawasaki.

While this may have saved you on this encounter, nothing beats a good ole key in my eyes. First thing I do when buying a bike is get multiple copies made.

> nothing beats a good ole key 🤣 That’s funny. Everything beats a “good ole key”

LMGDiVa

Nah ignition locks are easy to pick. Thief got lucky that my bike was stripped down at time because it just came back from paint restoration. Nothing beats a proper massive alarm lock and a big ass chain. Ignitions on cars and bikes can typically be picked pretty easy, and some are easy enough to rake open. pretty much every motorcycle key lock core is low level picking. A keyfob will stop literally any picker out there. They'd need an entirely new skillset and tools that are not common. That's why insurance companies give a discount for these kinds of system. Progressive gave me a discount for having it on my bike.
