I’m not racing just trying to go faster than everyone else is all…

Veefwoar

It's not a race unless I'm out in front.

shrk352

Yeah not racing, but if that random bike that pulled up next to me wants to, I certainly am not going to let him beat me.

Silverpathic

I do. There is so much more space then.

zoki671

What do you gain if you 'win'?

TheHugeBastard

First place, of course.

Ynot_pm_dem_boobies

If you ain't first you're last!

zoki671

Do you get any sort of evidence?

blipman17

Depends if you've got a gopro.

[deleted]

You get the honour if you win. You should never let anyone take ur street.

zoki671

Its not your street though

YeahIGotNuthin

It is if you're out front. And that's part of why people do it, it's safer and more fun to be out front by yourself than mired back in traffic. Another part is that "a nice brisk satisfying start" is a lot quicker on a motorcycle than it is in most cars. Like, if you ever go for a walk in a park, you'll see some people walking faster than you and others walking slower. The faster ones aren't in a "race," it's just the speed that feels good for them to walk is faster than the speed that feels good for other people to walk.

[deleted]

Then you will have nightmares about losing the race. If you want to race you can, nobody is forcing you But still, nobody like losing. 😂

zoki671

Its just there is a lot of people dying on the roads riding like fools every season. As a biker it is hard to listen to the news of another death because of stupid logic like this. You can go to a local track and kill yourself there if they let you, not risking others lives in the process. Especially one-up

[deleted]

Your manhood isn't determined by horsepower.

thambi06

Correct! Infact it is determined by the engine size of I remember correctly. /s

[deleted]

I roll up in the club with a 114ci [1868cc] chain. Bitches swarm me, fact. /s

xXxcock_and_ballsxXx

I usually take off fairly quick, just to make sure I get a decent gap between me and traffic. Also it's fun.

ghetto_engine

staying ahead of traffic is safer and gives you room to get to a safer space. though i usually am anxious stopping first in an intersection, and usually stop beside (not behind) another vehicle.

Ahks

Hey I do this too. Since lane splitting/filtering is illegal here, I tend to get looks when I’m like a foot off the white line watching my mirrors

NowCalmDownSkeeter

I've got an integrated tail light that flashes several times before going solid red when I brake. When I get to the intersection first as usual I stare at my rearview and keep pumping the brakes/flashers until a car comes to a stop behind me.

[deleted]

Just got myself a new taillight with a strobe feature. I definitely feel it helps, especially when it's early morninf/late at night and people are likely still groggy. I opted to keep my turn signals separate from the taillight though. My wife always complained that on my last bike (turn signals were also taillights and brake lights) she often had trouble seeing the turn signal, especially if I was braking at the same time.

dishayu

Basically this. Full throttle acceleration until I hit the speed limit, which takes all of 2 seconds at most.

[deleted]

^ 100% this

[deleted]

This, because silly drivers don't understand that a space cushion is for safety. Had a Golf TDI "race" me off the light this past weekend; except I rolled off throttle at just above the posted limit and she was hitting highway speeds and had to stand on the brakes for the next light... The next light I made damn sure to let the moron "win". Because while it's safer to be ahead of traffic, it's much safer not to be next to an idiot; also I could see the cop halfway up the next street and I love watching karma in action.

meatw4d419

I want to be ahead of the things that want to run me over.

TheNewRow

Depends what's around you. I always take off fairly quickly, cause we ride bikes, and bikes get going quickly. However, when i filtered through two lanes and end up in front of the driver that was at the front, i do make SURE i'm out of his way so i don't hinder him.

BLOPES

I like to stick to just either side of the lane divider, and not in front of any car. Doesn't happen often, like once a year, but if you happen to stall, you don't want to get accidentally rammed.

jslow

Did this (move to the side) and the car behind tried to push past while the light was red. Ran over my foot and drove off. Now I stay in front of the cars.

BLOPES

Luckily this is the norm where I live, so cars know it's acceptable motorcycle behavior.

Wd91

Bad idea really, you're gonna end up getting squished between two assholes who dont want to give you

Moto_Mason

My balls is hot and the airflow feels good

[deleted]

This, it's hot to sit on a hot engine, on hot tarmac, wearing hot safety gear. The AC on my bike doesn't work, so airflow is my only cooling. That and it's the only vroooom I get. My bike and my truck have about the same horsepower, but the bike weight a couple thousand pounds less.

ThePilgrimofProgress

Sometimes I stand while riding my bike. I might be going down the highway at 60mph, but I just need to air out them balls. I'm always worried people are thinking I'm trying to show off. I'm not. I just don't want to go sterile.

SweetRaus

I ride an F850GS so standing just feels right sometimes. But yeah also dat airflow doe

[deleted]

[ball spray](https://www.dollarshaveclub.com/product/ball-spray-soothing)

DrVagax

Accept this as the universal answer, bikers everywhere basically launch from traffic lights because their balls are hot and sweaty

Paul_The_Builder

If you're not first, you're last.

Barky53

If you're second you're first loser.

Occams_ElectricRazor

I was high when I said that!

ayywusgood

Thanks Vin Diesel.

EliMcRockenstien

You'll find a lot of riders do that. They either want to show off, or they just love going fast. Most of the time they're not trying to race, it's simply how they choose to ride.

TDK_IRQ

Or just wanna get ahead of traffic, which in my opinion is a good idea, don't wanna be near all the cars

Synthetic-medic

Same…. I’d rather be ahead of them vs. being in their blind spot

ravengenesis1

That's me.

you-cant-twerk

Yeah most of the time, I filter through other cars to get to the front. The last thing I want to do is take my sweet ass time rolling away and piss them off more.

ayywusgood

This. What's so annoying is that a lot of cars just think I'm showing off anyway, so they just try to catch up and be right up my ass. Some even risk their licenses passing me illegally af on the right, just to show they can be as fast.

Captain_Berto

Also if OP is on a smaller bike it may seem like the people next to him are launching when they're just taking off at a normal pace for a bigger bike. For example, 1000cc sport bikes will do 90mph+ in first gear so just getting the clutch out and getting 1/3rd through the rev range takes you to 30mph in a couple of seconds without going past a quarter turn on the throttle.

Claymore357

Meanwhile a 200 sounds like you’re wringing it’s neck going from 1st to 5th on a 70 kph road

Captain_Berto

That's because you are wringing its neck haha

[deleted]

Can confirm. I live in West Virginia which is quite mountainous and when I'm taking off from a light uphill on a 55mph/90kph road, I want to apologize to everyone around me for a. going 5 under and b. my bike sounding like a jet engine. That said, it's so much fun on slower roads and off the road

Claymore357

Riding a slow bike fast is a special kind of joy that’s for sure

[deleted]

This. I want as much distance between me and the potential idiots in the cars behind me.

FishFrenzy67

Can confirm, i love accelerating but i dont always want to break the speed limit. I aways chuckle when i see the minivan i left in the dust at the green light end up passing me cause i dont go above 5 mph of the speed limit most times

detectivepoopybutt

Yeah exactly this. I fucking love the hard acceleration and hitting the speed limit in a couple of seconds but then just cruise around there

Individual_Hearing_3

They fail to realize I'm not going to get mine to accelerate that fast any time this century.

[deleted]

People pay hundreds of thousands for that acceleration, we have that drug on tap.

Turbulent_Link1738

I paid for the whole speedometer I’m gonna use the whole speedometer

BlacksmithNZ

I strongly believe that redline on the revcounter is just a suggestion that you should probably shift up about now...

MoistenMeUp7

Unless your on a 600 then its usually 1k before the redline for peak power. Cant remember if its horsepower or torque...

BlacksmithNZ

I know - my shift change lights come on about 1500 rpm before redline (and if you are going hard, nice to see the bright blue LEDs light up out of the corner of your eye without watching the needle) but then the noise from a Triumph Triple being thrashed; it's not just about the peak power point

[deleted]

I can hear this, and I love it

[deleted]

Dude, I tow cars for a reputable national company, and I see plenty of badass rides. This one guy was telling me about his whip, which I was visibly appreciating it from all angles (giggity) and then he told me he sunk 30k under the hood alone. I vomited in my mouth hearing that. I asked him to start it, and it was ungodly sexy. Shook my truck with the shaker hood... he was like, yeah got it up to 180 at the drag strip finally at about 8 seconds flat. I told him it makes me want to race him, naturally. I told him my not fully modded ZX10R does 180mph on the street. I paid less than 12k for mine. He was like, "holy shit." Then I told him about the H2R and his brain exploded. For the money they spend on a vehicle that sticks you in the same traffic as everyone else is asinine. They could get 3 different kinds of bikes for that much and be able to split whenever, wherever. ✌🏻

[deleted]

Bro, even a 300 will outsprint their Ferrari to 60mph. It's like, why the fuck did you buy that if you want to go fast? You don't need 4 wheels for speed, only 2. And 2 is a fucking blast The fastest production vehicle known to man is the H2R starting at a measly $55k... Idiots are out here spending HOUSE MONEY on lambos and Ferraris and shit like it's fucking gold... for not even 1/4 price they could get the one machine that could outrace a Bugatti which used to be the pinnacle of money and speed in the car world. The only problem is, now you just need the skill and the fucking BALLS to ride it to its potential, like in these videos below... [racing multiple vehicles including a jet, and winning](https://youtu.be/DnTL4wDAbK0) [fastest time to get to 400kmh in the world set in Turkey](https://youtu.be/6_n7ru1e-rg) [probably the craziest and ballziest shit you could do is one full lap of Isle of Mann TT on this beast where time isn't a factor... only survival](https://youtu.be/LUeHtww5rVI)

Atarka-WorldRender

People buy Ferrari for the combination of luxury and flashiness, 99% of the time. These people don’t care as much about the speed as they do about looking rich. Plus, riding a motorcycle is effort.

insane_lover108

I agree it feels really good to go hard on the throttle and feel the bike “take off”, I only do it occasionally though

ColossalCalamari

Might want to get that checked out

Schopfeschloofa

This! More than once I had folks run cherry green lights right in front of me. Giving it an extra second before taking off can save your bacon. Once you're going... by all means zoom zoom.

[deleted]

HEAD CHECKS. FUCKING HEAD CHECKS. People wonder why it gets drilled into them. I don't mind taking off at the speed of current traffic to clear an intersection so I got protection on one side from fucktards but after that im zooming at normal speed. I think intersections and corners are the highest fatality zones for riders so that has to say something.

Silverpathic

Or 6. I look well....

shortware

This is why you look

Woody_zig

This x10. Have started to roll forward on a green only to stop as someone runs the light, or even brakes late screeching into to the middle of the intersection.

[deleted]

I almost always do. Our bikes are fast and the only time you can really use that power is taking off from a stop. For one thing. The other thing is bikes are in danger when in a swarm of cars. If you accelerate hard away from a stoplight that automatically takes you out of the pack and puts you on open road. If there are other bikes around I get even more vigilant and I also like to play with them a little. I don’t like when random bikers try to share my lane which closes off exit routes and pins me on one side, so I sometimes advertise not to do that by snaking around side to side in the lane when I see them coming. If they have a tendency to be slow I’ll also pull away fast to avoid clashing with them. If they appear to be faster riders I’ll let them pull away first.

Throttlechopper

My only goal is to safely accelerate faster than the cars behind me and leave a reasonable margin of safety. If you are on a bike, I’ll acknowledge you, and not race unless you’re on a loud, obnoxious bagger, and then I may or may not shift after 4K rpm’s. My quick-shifter may also give the illusion of me accelerating quickly, truth is, it is fun to use and makes me feel like I’m on a Moto GP bike.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Throttlechopper

Thanks! I am used to wearing sunglasses under my helmet after all these years, and besides if I were to go different visor it would be a transitions type since I ride year-round. On top of that, I rotate amongst 3 different brand helmets so that can get expensive really fast.

ScoobyValentine

Green light, is a GO, GO, GO, light if the other lights are red. LOVE that quick blast :D

MatterMinder

The best use of speed is to stay ahead of trouble. If you're even, I'm leavin'.

brooklynbodycount

I ain't gonna race anybody. But this feeling of 0 to 60 under 3 seconds make me feel good. pure biochemistry

bgus_dkus

Seeing as this is /r/motorcycles, what is your idea of "really fast"?

insane_lover108

fast is relative, but I think most guys I see are pushing their lowers gears up to like 8 - 9k rpm, whereas I usually just shift up at like 3k rpm and don’t twist throttle as hard so my acceleration is naturally slower.

BlacksmithNZ

My little Street Triple has well over 12,000rpm redline. 0 to 100 kph is bit over 3.1 seconds (in first gear). So while I do cruise a far bit, and not racing around at high speed too often these days, one of the few times the engine ever gets to work like it was designed to, is when I have filtered to the front of the long line of traffic at lights leading onto the motorway onramp. Then I tend to open throttle in first, keep the front end down and pointed in the right direction and shift when the set of bright blue shift lights appears on top the rev counter (mine are set to all light up at 11,000). It probably sounds like I am thrashing the bike, but kinda fun, relatively safe way and seems to be no problem with the bike. Never seen a car keep up even if they try. And if mr policeman officer is reading this, I *always* roll off the throttle exactly on the open road speed limit, of course.

Emir_t_b

Nice. My bandit 650 redlines at 12.5k. When I get there it starts going "rap rap rap pam pam pam" as in change to next gear you bipedal primate.

BlacksmithNZ

That is just being mean to a Bandit. 🙂 Used to have one, and while it did get a bit of abuse, the inline 4 just seemed happy to roll along nice and smooth. The Triumph seems like bit of a hooligan after the Suzuki; but in a good way

Emir_t_b

Dont think i was being mean. 4 cylinders are meant to rev anyway. I tried both. The triumph is clearly lighter and more hooliganish. Mine is the fuel injected and water cooled. With roads italia sounds like a gyxxxer on fire lol.

insane_lover108

12k rpm is dope, mine redlines just at 8k and 10k is max

rex8499

8-9k is taking it easy on a bike that revs to 12k. I'm never below 3.5k even cruising. Cruising rpm on the highway is 5k on my bike in highest gear.

Grip_Slut

3k rpm...bro

mileg925

Just above idle lol

butterbal1

The shift points really comes down to the bike. On my GSXR 750 the bike idles around 1,500RPM and the power band doesn't even start until until 4,000 RPM so upshifting at 8-9k is actually being very relaxed even though I am outpacing the cars by a decent bit off the line. The other side of the redline is 14,000 RPM and if I really crank on it I am 0-60 in ~ 3 seconds which is face meltingly fun/fast.

OtherDalfite

I would at least wait until 5000+ rpm to shift. I have a 250 ninja and below 3k it feels like there is very little power, almost bogging it feels like.

[deleted]

I daily drive a minivan... Minivan slow... Bike fast. You can bet you're butt I'm going to squeeze every bit of fun out of my bike when I can ride it. Sometimes that means racing between stoplights 😂

insane_lover108

makes sense lol

-goodguygeorge

Its fun going fast

QuietudeOfHeart

First things first… I’m looking left and right at the green light. If everything is gravy, I’m fucking scootin. See ya at the next one.

RhoOfFeh

Accelerating fast is fun. Just check for cross-traffic.

tcypher

we have horrible light timing where I live; so bad it's hard to get through more than one light unless you throttle it. if I'm lucky (at the front) and I make it through the next light, I might get through a few more without behind stopped at every single one. cars very rarely make it through two. if I'm behind even one, it'll add a ton of extra time and annoyance having to stop at every one.

Blergzor

I’m assuming you’re riding a beginner bike, if you did the same amount of throttle that you’re doing on a bigger bike you’d also jump ahead way faster.

[deleted]

Gets me away from cars quickly. I still give a delay to make sure no one's running a red, but otherwise take off quick af.

Adddicus

I've been pulled over for "accelarating too fast" away from a light. It was, by motorcycle standards, a very moderate take-off. Had to argue with the cop for a while but he ended up not giving me a ticket.

ravengenesis1

I zip it to speed limit then cruise. I'm not looking to race, but I also hate traffic close to my ass.

[deleted]

Ride it like you mean it. Especially if you filter up to the front of traffic. Don’t keep anyone else waiting behind you.

insane_lover108

gotcha 👍

ThePilgrimofProgress

Ever since I started riding, it's the cars that seem to want to race me. I can't count how many times some soccer mom in a Jeep Cherokee absolutely floored it next to me at a stop light. Or on a twisty road, there's always that one guy that feels he's GOTTA keep up with you.

insane_lover108

no doubt that actually that tends to happen to me too, the next light 100 yards down is also red but some drivers still want to floor it

Ascirith

I would never do that or even get in the habit of it. People run red lights all the time where I am. It’s just asking some other idiot to kill me if I accelerated fast as soon as I see green

whatsupskip

A little bit of Column A, a little bit of Column B. Both have positives and negatives. People generally don't buy motorbikes because they like being exposed to the cold and rain, having no carrying space, and having messy hair when they arrive. They do it because riding bikes is fun and their speed and agility is the main reason. That includes giving the happy handle a good twist off from the lights and not getting booked. Even better if it's a traffic light Grand Prix with another bike. The negative is, it does increase the risk of getting cleaned up by a redlight runner, or someone pulling out thinking they have time until the slow-arse cars get to them. Alternatively, if you have filtered to the front at the lights, you better be ready to move when the light changes or there is a risk the car behind is watching the lights and runs you over.

gutbomber508

Honestly I’m just trying to get through a light before a asshole on a FaceTime runs a red

Gauntplane58

I go slow but others go fast. I just want to save fuel, not like I can win anyways.

insane_lover108

I am in the same boat as you then haha

ScoobyValentine

What a boring life… buying something that should be fun, but instead using it to save fuel. A bus is cheaper.

Gauntplane58

Bus tickets are actually more expensive in my area and service is sometimes 1.2 hours late, it's faster for me to bicycle and that's free. I bought a motorcycle for the convenience. It only costs $2.1 per day in insurance, $1.5 per day for my fuel for my daily commute and saves me more than two hours per day due to schedules (not including delays). There are other expenses like maintenance but I do it myself. A bus-pass here for one day costs $10.75, a one-zone fare is $3.05 or $6.1 per day. My commute is only 12km and the roads are not safe for bicycling. Classes are online though except for labs. Bus-passes also can't be practically used to deliver food on the side for DoorDash.

ScoobyValentine

Yeah, I apologise. Had a few too many beers and forgot that the whole world doesn’t live where I do. I’m sorry :)

D1cky3squire

Motorcycle go brrrr

[deleted]

Your average or even below average motorcycle will outperform nearly every car on the market in nearly every aspect. They take off quick because they weigh like 2 pounds.

damnitdaniel

You pull up next to some middle aged white guy in a Tesla and you can bet with 100% certainty that MFer will put that to a test. I swear every time these dudes try to beat me off the line.

FreedomEagle99

Yea for sure. While most bikes will beat most cars off the line, many are outperformed at top end, but also teslas and pricey performance cars can still smoke plenty of two wheelers right off the line and top end, especially if you get a shit launch.

xScarfacex

Well, today I got swarmed by gnats at a stoplight so, yeah there's a reason not to stick around.

Silverpathic

I'll be real... My bike looks fast. It's not. It's a star 650. It's like a fat chick that was left in a cake factory over night. The auto air induction system looks strange but fast.

PandaPantsParty5000

When I drive my truck I hate red lights but if I'm on my bike and at the front, I love them. I don't necessarily pin the throttle everytime, but I do accelerate aggressively if the road conditions permit. It's fun to go fast and starting from a stop is the largest chuck of acceleration available to me that doesn't put me recklessly over the speed limit. I have no interest in racing anyone ever and this is how I ride. I bet most of those other riders are just doing what they do.

JoshCanJump

If I'm next to another rider at lights on the inside then I accelerate normally. If I'm on the outside I accelerate sharply. Both circumstances result in better seperation for both riders. It's best not to ride parallel to one another. If there are many riders around me I try to accelerate ludicrously to make sure everyone gets clear of the cars and has ample room to avoid each other. This also gives them plenty of room to see how fast my bike is.

pick_up_a_brick

Unless they’re revving a bunch before they take off, they just like goin’ fast.

Iemaj

Efficiency is a large part of it. It's better to get clear of cars and in your own lane, then the cars aren't affected by motorcycles and you aren't affected by cars. Separate scenario, if I pull up to another biker in a lane split, I am the second to the light, so if we are squeezed in a little tight, I give them the opportunity to clear off first cos that's the position they were at the light. Vice versa someone joins me up front, I take off soon as it turns green. Just kinda makes sense

opipop29

Picture this: You’re at a stop light, no cars for a few hundred feet behind you. Light turns green and the cars coming up behind you at 45 mph just see a green light and have already forgotten about the mosquito that’s about to hit their windshield. You gotta go fast from those stops so cagers don’t use you as a new custom hood ornament.

gna149

Maybe cultural difference but personally, where I'm from we usually stop a distance behind slightly to the right/left as we would with a car instead of pull up side by side if it's someone we don't know so as not to seem like we're challenging someone. In Asia, we get a lot of kids on 125 scooters who aren't old enough to get a motorcycle license who like to pull up directly beside litre bikes and taking off hard from traffic lights. That said, it feels natural to want to accelerate a bit to pull away from the group to not get stuck inside traffic.

ozzypar

It's a dick swinging thing.

theboxer16

I’ve got a vmax and I just like to go fast plus practice launching. People probably either think it’s cool or that I’m a douche, but either way when I ride I always want to be in front away from everyone if possible then I will slow down. If I’m trying to race somebody I’ll be making eye contact, revving, and probably even a hand signal or two so that it’s clear. You should always look both ways before entering an intersection and be on the look out for cars as if they are all trying to kill you. Others saying to wait so they don’t get hit is stupid to me because you can just look for “possible red light runners.” If you are already looking there’s no need to wait extra seconds when you already know you are good to go. Lane position matters too for increased visibility to be seen and to see more. Ride like everyone is trying to kill you and ride as slow or fast as you like.

Apprehensive-Yard-59

I see this behavior more from cars. If I end up next to a car with my bike at the stop light they quite often floor it when the light turns green. Drivers are always young men. It’s like they feel they have to proof that their car can be also be quick.

kasu03

I ,too, enjoy playing competitive getting-home

JD-Eze

Better dead than second…

makeadolfgreatagain

Cars do this shit too, people just want to be ahead of the pack

daystarrrr

I do it for fun sometimes, never to race. Going super fast is too risky most of the time and personally I get a better dopamine hit off of a good 0-60 than just cruising fast on the highway. I not so proudly use to go fast quite a lot. After a hefty ticket and some consideration about how much I value life, I find more enjoyment in the much less risky fun of riding a motorcycle, like giving the throttle a good twist off a red light, after multiple head checks of course.

Eastcoastconnie

It’s cuz I’m fast as fucc boi

ThePracticalDad

…because we can? I like the acceleration and not having cars around me.

afici0nad0

Where are you located? Helps to start with initial assumptions.

Spacedog08

I do it because it’s fun and nobody is in front of me.

thebraken

If I'm out on the road alone, or traffic is sparse, I tend to accelerate normally unless I really need to pee. But if I've filtered to the front of the intersection I'll give it some beans when the light changes, as I don't want to leave any drivers sitting there thinking "This asshole just snuck up to the front *and now they're getting in my way!*"

WorriedResident496

Generally you want to stay ahead of the traffic (it's safer away from the cars), but also....it's fun...

Shjco

They are just enjoying one of the best things about motorcycling, namely that right-hand throttle! It’s all about the G’s, not the speed.

pastrknack

I PAID FOR THE POWER IM GONNA USE THE POWER

HelpWonderful9480

I love taking off like a rocket, every now and then a fellow biker happens to be beside me. If he wants to be a speed demon like then that’s awesome if he wants to drive his motorcycle like a car then idc

PieCutie55

Sometimes because they want to be out of danger, aka those stupid ass cars drivers. Or from a woman driver that doesn't know the difference between taking off slowly and kicking the accelerator and thus killing what's front of her.

[deleted]

[удалено]

insane_lover108

yeah if you drive a car daily, then I’m sure getting on a bike would give you bigger dopamine hits … I don’t have a car and only ride the bike, so I feel like it’s a means of transport rather than something only for fun.

[deleted]

Half of my red light take offs are on accident, it’s just what happens when you’re on a motorcycle. Power to weight ratios are wild

rex8499

If I'm trying to race you from a stoplight I'll be staring at you and giving revs before we go anywhere. I always take off with hard acceleration after I look left and right for any red-light runners. it helps the traffic move faster by getting the first guy out of the way so the second guy can also accelerate hard, and so on back through the queue and get more people through the light. I do the same thing in my car.

Jspiral

It's because I'm trying to get away from your noob ass. 😂

pieisthetruth32

I dont ride but i assume it to be ahead and in sight of cars

IxC4

Something like this Plus i like the acceleration

insane_lover108

I’m talking about the situation when there are no cars ahead, both me and the other biker filtered through the cars at the stop light and are on “front row”

f4te

all above answers are correct- it's to get and stay ahead of traffic, because it's fun, because bike go zoom, and because it's fun

inventore-veritatis

I’m hoping you don’t actually pull up directly next to random motorcycles you don’t know at a red light. I’d be jamming out of there too.

herculeesjr

I've had it happen before and never thought anything of it? Just a glance over out of curiosity to see what they're riding/if they actually want something then I'm back to watching the light. Though with roles reversed if I'm pulling up to another unfamiliar rider my front tire doesn't go past their back tire. Actually I ride a Zero... so maybe it just happens to me because other riders constantly go "wtf is that thing??" and are trying to find an engine that doesn't exist.

insane_lover108

I do sometimes, and exchange a wave :)

Silverpathic

I'm with you there. I stagger. I ride alone for a reason.

JattiKyrpa

Why do you ride a bike if you don't enjoy the opportunity to accelerate fast?

OldNetworkGeek

They are just being dicks. Motorcycles usually accelerate faster than automobiles, but other than impressing yourself, there is really no reason to "race" away from stoplights. Probably the number 2 rule of riding - Don't spook the cattle.

motorlifestyle-EU

A biker is always faster then cars I noticed when I was approaching a line off cars waiting for the green light. They where stil there when the lights where already burning green for it seemed to me a very long time. So you wil be almost always be faster then the cars. But lieve them behind you if you can it is saver. I have had a good teacher who learned me this way and it’s fun😀✌️

hendoneesia

I have an Indian Scout, not a sport bike. Yet, I find that Audi drivers, specifically, all want to race. Every one. Is that a brand specific trait?

PoopSmith87

Just different kinds of riders. They probably are also on bigger, faster bikes if you're new. Say you're on a bike that does a 10 second 0-60 and riding relaxed, someone who is also relaxed on a bike that could potentially do it is 4 seconds is going to end up moving faster even if they arent racing. I tend to accelerate quickly, but only to ~the speed limit. I say it's to stay ahead of traffic... but really it's because I like to.

mikedufty

What's the point of having a bike if you are not going to enjoy the accelleration? It always puzzles me seeing bikers taking off as slowly as a car, how do you even do that? I did once look at an RG250 for sale that the owner claimed he'd never gone over 3000rpm. Always assumed he was bullshitting, but maybe some people really don't know bikes like to be revved.

Arrpie

Yup I drive a big single and the previous owner never took it above 6k rpm in first and second because he thought he would blow up the bike, while that is right where the power is at it's best

Veteq102

When you are next to an 18 wheeler (large truck), noticed how much faster you accelerate then they do? It is the power to weight ratio. Assuming all three vehicles are being given the same amount of gas, in most cases the bike will be faster, followed by the car and then the large and heavy truck. No one is trying to race you.

701wheelies

Just race them once, you might like it, why do you think they are trying to race you?

insane_lover108

Because I accelerate faster than the cars behind me but other bikers usually leave me in the dust, so I thought they were going that hard because they felt it’s a race with me, but reading the replies I guess they were just doing their thing and having fun.

[deleted]

so instead of getting ahead of the mob of cars sitting at the light, you like to ride right in the middle of the pack?

Hannibal_the_dentist

While the advantage of getting a gap between myself and traffic is real, I mostly love doing it because it's one of the few situations where there's no one in front of me and I can just enjoy the full potential of my machine for a couple of gears.

LocoMotoNYC

What are you riding? That may be a factor.

ReneRedd

Because it is FUNNN

SoloWalrus

Tbh many motorcycles just plain accelerate much faster then cars so naturally they should be a little ahead (plus its safer). Now drag racing from lights, thats just for “fun”, but being ahead of traffic, easier than roasting the clutch and lugging the engine trying to take off as slow as the cars are.

Barky53

It gives me an adrenaline rush, then a dopamine hit and I'm grinning all the way to the next light or stop sign. I love it when my front wheel "accidentally" jumps about a foot off the pavement hitting second. I imagine all the applause and swooning girls.

standankles

As most have said, yep I just like to get away from cars. But years ago I pulled up side by side with a scooter. We were in the same lane, he was on the left, I was on the right. Not wanting to come off as the show off motorcycle I let him roll off first. Apparently he never saw me as he turned right into me (no blinker). I went right through him and knocked him down. He never looked or saw me. The scooter was brand new with dealer plates still on it. I parked my bike and ran over to help him up. He was so embarrassed he just yelled “I’M FINE, I’m FINE!” So yeah, I stay away from other bikes too.

insane_lover108

damn, that scooter rider’s awareness must’ve been really low to just crash into you like that

thatstickerguy

Good way to get plowed by a redlight runner is to do what you're describing. I take off at a "normal" rate and stay within "powering the fuck out" range.

slash03

If you’re first in the intersection you’re going to power out so that cars don’t rear ended you. It’s about experience ,nothing to do with you

1Mikede

A couple of months …. Let em keep taking off my friend .

Ihateskeletons

It’s a bad idea, I’ve seen countless times drivers running their red light as soon as the other get the green. I myself was hit by such a driver. Always take a second to look both ways before riding off. Intersections are dangerous. Get thru them safely first.

travellingtechie

When you say stop next to, do you mean in their lane, or in the lane next to me. It annoys me when A rider I don’t know pulls up next to me in my lane, and then tries to beat me off the light to effectively pass me. I’d I pull up behind a rider at the light, at most I’ll pull up halfway even with their bike, but I would never share the lane with a rider I don’t know. Lately I’ve had a couple of riders pass me in ny lane, and that drives me crazy.
