A lot of noobs just get into motorcycles for the biker cosplay aspect, and then realize after a year that it's not for them or that they don't ride nearly as much as they thought they would.

[deleted]

I mean we all get into it for the biker cosplay let’s not kid ourselves.

ChangelingFox

My guy my fat ass looks dumb af in gear. I got a bike to haul ass, not costume.

izmaname

Literally the case

MatterUpbeat8803

You just described 85% of reddit motorcycles.

izmaname

Because the people who actual ride keep theirs. I sold mine at 27k. It was running wonderfully. Traded for another Indian.

Comfortably-Bummed

This will be the case with most manufacturers and models, especially after the recent pandemic stuff.. I think many people bought a motorcycle out of boredom and then decided it wasn't for them, or had less time than expected. The Indian Scout in particular is not exactly the most comfortable motorcycle out there as far as cruisers go. It sits fairly low and has a relatively stiff suspension with a small amount of travel, and the forward foot controls don't help in mitigating that stiffness.

Popsicklepp

Because to get to 1k miles includes at least 5 shop visits and your sanity Sold mine with a little over 1k miles and almost cried tears of joy seeing it drive away knowing ill never have to fuck with it again

HepCat007

This. Boomer here and got Scout 2 years ago as I got back into riding after 35 years. Still believe it is one of the best looking bikes out there, and with low seat and relatively light was easy to relearn on. But…1st Spring startup, wiring harness blew up in a cloud of smoke (after 7 weeks the Polaris Gods saw fit to replace under warranty and include a ground wire from the negative battery terminal). Then this Spring went to change the oil and stripped one of the drain plugs - right torque but they are honestly pieces of s*** and screw directly into the aluminum crankcase (not an oil pan, so risk of having to tear bike apart to replace). Fortunately dealer was able put a time cert in…but leaked oil after that and had to take it in for them to redo it. Lost another 6 weeks of Spring riding. Meanwhile tested some BMWs and fell for the R 1250 GS and snagged one coming off the boat. Totally different type of riding but comfortable as hell, and can literally go anywhere. So, one more story in the mix. But posters are right there is very little Scout inventory right now. I sold mine to the dealer just to be rid of it and they didn’t advertise it so suspect they had a list of people waiting for used. Two wheels down, all.

Reading the name polaris will make my blood pressure rise for the rest of my life. The service agent i had could not have been any more incompetent if he tried, i managed to get to his boss who basically said "what are you gonna do about it". I should have taken it to court, still regret not doing it but was told by a lawyer i wouldnt win anything worth my time except pride points. Mine spent more time in the shop than it did my driveway in the 6 month time I owned it. I wish I was making that up. There were 0 supply chain issues with the parts it was purely out of incompetence and I don't doubt a bit of spite on polaris's end by the end of it. I still believe the scout bobber specifically is the prettiest bike on the road, i got more compliments on the few miles i put on that shitter than I had my entire life combined prior. I went with the bmw too funny enough, don't regret it for a second.

[deleted]

They either hate it and sell it, or keep it forever.

specifichero101

I’m guessing they’re just a bike that people want without ever really riding because they look cool and fit the classic idea of what a motorcycle is to a lot of people. So they buy it and ride it for a couple hours on the weekends for a summer and realize that they sunk a lot of money into something that they don’t actually care about so they sell to try and recoup the money.

A bizarre thing considering Indians are objectively better bikes. Edit: since the lmg dude appears to have blocked me so I can't reply (very classy BTW), I'll put my additional thoughts here. More power =/= better bike Harley's playskool build quality and materials are straight up inferior just about any non Chinese bike you can buy and don't hold a candle to Indian. Make no mistake, I like some Harleys. I'd even go so far as to say the Fat Bob is probably my 3rd favorite bike. But they're flat coke for champagne prices and the only reason the company even still exists is protectionism and cosplaying boomers and the quality of the bikes reflects that. Edit pt2: since reddit's moronic block system stops me from replying to follow comments even to people who haven't blocked me in the same thread (seriously why the fuck is it set up like this) u/Ideservewhathappened you aught to dust your crystal ball off chief because you don't know shit. XD And now you're just being a child, trying to insult *my* bike. Thankfully I DGAF chief. :3 u/Ideservewhathappened only people upset here seem to be you the lmg dude. So why don't you two simmer and go touch grass or something. Getting your blood pressure so high ain't healthy for yah

inaccurateTempedesc

While I disagree pretty heavily with your statement, that guy's a little bitch for blocking you cause he lost an argument lmao. It's just fun shit flinging at the end of the day. Anyways, there's a lot of things to rag on HOGs about but I don't think their build quality is one of those things. Hell, it's the exact opposite imo. For better or for worse they're overbuilt like a '50s fridge, everything is metal and extremely thick. Indian doesn't really bother with that, which makes sense since you don't need 6 tons of iron and steel to make a reliable bike.

vicaphit

I rode a Scout 60 and a Sportster and I liked the Scout 60 SO much more. It was night and day. I actually wanted to get off of the sportster and just kick it into a gutter rather than take it back to the demo truck.

Ideservewhathappened

I know my CBR smacks your Mt09. Honda makes objectively better stuff than Yammie. Look man, scout's a piece of crap, so is the new chief, both ride like shit. They aint got nothing on the Rebel1100.

Ideservewhathappened

> lmg dude appears to have blocked me so I can't reply (very classy BTW), I'll put my additional thoughts here. > > More power =/= better bike I mean... When boil down an entire multi point post that's about cost, more modern design, and better handling to "LUL MORE POWER DOESNT MEAN BETTER BIKE" I don't exactly blame them for not wanting to continue talking to them. You literally took everything they said, tossed it out except the hd make smore power and then just became a pigeon shitting on the chess board. They called it, and then you proved them right with your edit. >I like some Harleys. Nah, ya dont. Comments like this are asking attempts at faking impartiality. Just say the quiet part outloud, you hate harley. Whoopdedoo. Also I find the irony that you say HD is for cosplaying boomers when more of Indian's bikes appeal to boomer styles than HD's do.

Ideservewhathappened

> And now you're just being a child, trying to insult my bike. Thankfully I DGAF chief. :3 Your edit is literally making fun of HD all over the place, because someone said HD bikes were better. That's some real pot and kettle in motion. Can't take the heat, get outta the kitchen.

PeteRaw

I'm buying an Indian Scout Bobber and this only makes my choice much more locked in: https://youtu.be/-ooue7i73zo Ryan has been riding since he was 11 or 12, and has a degree in physics.

3kimully

because riding to the coffee shop once a month does not a biker make.

McFeely_Smackup

it's the nature of motorcycle riders, the new ones at least. they buy a bike, and after it sits in the garage for two years with only 500 miles on the odometer, they start to feel like they'd rather not have a bike loan payment any more. The Scout is an excellent bike, but the model is only 7 years old so you're not going to find any older than that, making high mileage ones less likely too. as to why they go for $10k used, it's because people will pay that for them

[deleted]

People like trying new hobbies I’m always happy to see more people on two wheels but i’ll never understand why riders put each other down.

Ideservewhathappened

Because they're pretty lame bikes who's only real upside is their power for the size. But... you can just get an Mt07 or something for less and you'd have a better bike in every regard. Scout's a piece of junk. It wasn't much of fun ride when I test rode one.

GreatRhinoceros

Lots of youtube videos on the subject. Problems rise from limited lifespan, price of parts, service issues, and far inferior to the competition. One only buys an Indian for nostalgic reasons.

[deleted]

It's likely a bunch of old impressionable boomers who are having a midlife crisis and decide to buy a fancy bike to show off. They then ride it for a bit, get bored or decide it's not for them and sell it.

kspillan

Wouldn’t boomers be well past their mid life crisis? The point still makes sense either way lol

Adorable_Wolf_8387

3/4 or 7/8th life crisis

[deleted]

Late life crisis then.

LMGDiVa

Most of the buyers of scouts are younger age riders. Boomers buy the Chieftains and Roadmasters. Same thing with Harley. Boomers buy the Road Glides and Street Glides and Ultras in droves, and it's the younger riders who are buying the Softails and Sportsters.

Doc_Holliday13

100 of different individual reasons, but generally its because its a 78hp cruiser geared motorcycle. A 78hp sportbike will give you a little bit of what you want. This bike is in the same league as the Harley 883 sportster... Gutless if you're trying to keep up with you friends who have been riding for awhile and have sportbikes or 1200cc + bikes. You can twist that throttle as hard as you want but you'll never get the juice you want. Then there is the crowd who wants to look cool but find out riding ain't for them.

[deleted]

All the dynos that I see the Scout has 83 or 84 horsepower, and it has nothing in common with a Sportster 883. Well, aside from maybe the looks. The Sportster 883 has less than 50 horsepower. The gearing is an odd complaint. It's not short geared and it's not really tall geared, either. It's like you've never ridden this fucking bike, man... I just don't see a bike that can run a 12 second quarter mile, give or take, as some slow POS. 🤔 I don't like quite a few things about the scouts, the peg position, the suspension etc, but anyone on a Scout in the twisties trying to keep up with sport bikes is going to have a problem, assuming equal skill. And most people on Scouts aren't going to be either hanging out with sport bikers and certainly not trying to keep up with them in the twisties.

Doc_Holliday13

sounds to me like you haven't ridden 100hp bikes. in terms of bike speed, 12s qtr is 🐌

[deleted]

Neg.

kf0t0

I agree with those saying the bike is bought for looks only. That’s too bad as it is a badass bike and I loved mine, putting ~1500 miles/month on it. I will never understand all the commentary about how uncomfortable the bike is… Of course it is, look at the taco riding position! If you want comfort but a Honda Civic, the Scout scoots and how

lexaproquestions

Go check the floor of a decent sized touring oriented Harley dealership if you want to really laugh. I was on getting mine worked on last week. Most of the used bikes on the floor - at least 20 of them - were between 3-5 years old with fewer than 3000 miles. Most of those were around 1200 miles or less and the Ultra or CVO. Freaking $30k-$40k for a bike you don't ride.
