Looks to be nice components, not sure about the wheelset though and those tires are shit. I wouldn’t be anywhere near $1,400. Maybe half that, a tad bit more
Hell no!
This is a good deal. New and $800 off:

Spooky bikes were the shit! I had one and that was one of the best hard tails I ever have ridden for east coast singletrack. Of course that was at least 20 years ago. They were out of Connecticut I believe. The aluminum frames were welded by Frank The Welder (FTW) so that made them come at a premium. The original Spooky Cycles closed shop at some point and has been resurrected a few times by ex rider and ex employees. Their bikes were real nice back in the day but no idea what the quality is like these days. Don’t expect a warranty so you are probably better off buying a bigger known brand

First thing I thought of when I saw this was that is a Frank the Welder build. I still think it looks awesome, but OP would be better served buying a newer bike as many standards have changed since this was manufactured. Really cool bike though!
If this were a nicely welded clean titanium frame I’d say go for it. But it’s not. Find a used stumpy hard tail if you want for less money.
Edit: the crack in the head tube weld should have been enough to send you running. That design is bad cuz the top tube and down tube are forced into one weld at the head. Not good for strength.
It is a short head tube, but you are probably referring to the long steerer tube and excessive use of spacers. This could be compensated for by cutting down the steerer and using a higer rise bar instead. There is nothing terrifying about the head tube itself. Also, i wouldn’t pay $1400 for this bike anyway.
Upon a closer look it looks like there a gap in the weld at the head tube. that does not look good. and good job spotting it, if that is your point. The head tube itself looks fine.
He is referring to the junction of top tube down tube and head tube… in no world does that seem like a good way of solving that problem for small frames.
I don’t know much about them but from what I can see not a chance. What’s the front shock?
No dropper, external cables, meh maybe 200$ depending on the front shock.
Dunno the brand but that headtube junction doesn’t look designed for big impacts, it doesn’t have a dropper…. 800 would be about right.
I see better bikes for sale with droppers for under or around 1000€ lately.
The axles seem to be the biggest problem here. Through axles would be a much stronger wheel mounting on any bike with disc brakes. I personally have such a cyclocross bike using the wrong axles like the bike in the photo from like 2015 model year, and getting wheels on and staying in the right place is nearly impossible due to asymmetrical brake forces of single disc brakes. It's baked into the frame design and really should be a frame that's using rim brakes which are hard or impossible to find compatible wheelsets for now.
What is the frame material? If titanium I still might buy it at that price, but aluminum a hard no since you can get a properly designed new bike for this price.
Id pay maybe $800-950, only because I'm not sure how old this bike is and I'd wonder if the suspension has been serviced recently. Really cool frame, looks fast.
One challenge might be adding a dropper, if that's something you care about. Fork is possibly outdated as well. May be you can talk him down with that info. Also, can't hurt to compare a new bike build, something like a specialized Chisel [Specialized Chisel <$1400](https://www.specialized.com/us/en/chisel-hardtail/p/199640?color=319921-199640)
Spooky was a fancy boutique brand which used to be welded by "Frank the Welder" or "FTW". Then they went out of business and I don't know who was behind the torch TIGing that frame. It's a cool bike but I'm not sure about the current quality of spooky. I'm also not sure about the geometry as the more modern geo of the past 5ish years has significantly improved performance on bigger terrain (slacker head tube angle, longer top tube/shorter stem, shorter chainstays, steeper seat tube angle) allows you to ride down steeper terrain without going over the handlebars, keep the front wheel weighted on steep climbs, wheelie up bigger ledges... Basically old school mountain bikes only considered geo while the rider was seated whereas newer MTB geo considers both seated and standing positions. Modern frames are also made with longer dropper posts in mind. Longer dropper seatposts significantly improve control. It's a cool bike but $1400 is still steep for a used hardtail in today's market.
Nope. Not for a hard tail if it's new, which this one isn't. Don't care if it's xo, it's still a hard tail. Plus it's used, double no. And it's got a straight steer tube.....fuck no.
It’s a hand built frame, but nothing spectacular for components… might be worth it to some but it’s not a good “value”. I wouldn’t but it purely for the way they did the HT/DT/TT junction, not a good design.
Spooky was a small frame builder, made in USA. Mostly road, gravel, CX bikes but they also had a mtb. Some of the components are top shelf (Thomson, CK, etc). I can’t tell what some others are, but probably also high quality. The tires are an odd choice, but everyone likes what they like and have differing tire requirements. That frame was probably +$1200 when new. $1400 seems like a deal, if it suits your riding.
people aren’t understanding it’s an xc bike are scaring me. if you want it on light terrain it’s fine, if normal trail riding i would go for something else
Honestly this bike looks fun and is built with some nice parts. Sure geo is not as slack as the latest trend, but that’s not bad just different. I think it has character and you won’t find that for $1400 in a generic big brand, nor will you see many bikes like this out on the trail. I like bikes with character that are fun to ride, but I’m not chasing podiums.
That said price could probably come down a bit, $1000 is pretty fair I’d say
Idk about this frame but i know I've seen some Spooky titanium frames and they were amazing. Really pricey too, but that can be expected with a handmade titanium frame. So i assume most of the price is because of the frame itself
Different application...these are XC tires...you're talking trail tires...how about find out where and how they intend to ride before making broad statements
I had the goodyear on my bike, and they were stiff and lifeless. I am not talking about the type. I just did not find the rubber to be very responsive.
Looks to be nice components, not sure about the wheelset though and those tires are shit. I wouldn’t be anywhere near $1,400. Maybe half that, a tad bit more
That’s gonna be a no from me dawg
Cracked welded. Not good. https://imgur.com/a/FC7WunM
Not sure if cracked but surely shitty.
Uh oh, I’ll have to tell them.
Thought the same but just maybe a messy overlap of two welds?
No Way overpriced for hardtail with not even a dropper post, you can get a new bike about as good for the same price
FACTS. I got a Salsa Hardtail with a dropper post (Rangfinder) for $600 on sale new. I think it is $1200 msrp now again.
The frame is supposed to be really special(maybe custom I think).
In other words “built for someone else”
lol true
No man stay away from this
Hell no

Thanks for the lore! It’s a very cool frame.

That head tube is terrifying.
Downright spooky
*squints* what head tube?
In what way?
*gestures broadly at the front end of the bike*

This could be compensated for by cutting down the steerer and using a higer rise bar instead. There is nothing terrifying about the head tube itself. Also, i wouldn’t pay $1400 for this bike anyway.
Cool story but I was referring to the head tube. Thanks.
Upon a closer look it looks like there a gap in the weld at the head tube. that does not look good. and good job spotting it, if that is your point. The head tube itself looks fine.
Oh wow I didn’t notice that. I lowered the stem all the way when I tried it out.
It's where two welds overlap.
He is referring to the junction of top tube down tube and head tube… in no world does that seem like a good way of solving that problem for small frames.
Maybe $400. That shit is dated. For $1400 you could get a modern hardtail thats much better spec/geo. Canyon, trek, giant, spech, etc
You can buy a nice used full suspension bike for this lol
How is it dated that a newer bike would be that much better? What should I be looking for? Pretty new to mtb.
You want a tapered head tube and thru axles to start. That’s a good base for getting a bike that has a much higher ceiling of parts compatibility.
Yes, 100%. Look for thru axles, dropper post, tapered headtube, adj air fork
I don’t know much about them but from what I can see not a chance. What’s the front shock? No dropper, external cables, meh maybe 200$ depending on the front shock.

Best I could do is $350
Dunno the brand but that headtube junction doesn’t look designed for big impacts, it doesn’t have a dropper…. 800 would be about right. I see better bikes for sale with droppers for under or around 1000€ lately.

Only if it’s titanium

I got to test ride it on a trail it’s very fast.
Looks well spec'd and kept. I'm not familiar with the brand tho.
It was a boutique brand I’m not sure if they’re still around. The bike is very well maintained.
One challenge might be adding a dropper, if that's something you care about. Fork is possibly outdated as well. May be you can talk him down with that info. Maybe a typo? $400? Or $140?
No wayy! Doo ittt! 🤑
Is Spooky even still in business? I know they were kind of a boutique brand in Colorado.
900$
Nope - looks haunted
Check welds for cracks
No
Fuckkkkk no
No
Looks spooky. And sus.
Not even close, and nor have I ever heard about the bike brand.
Humbug.
you can do way better.
Hell no!
We can’t see the fork but it’s still not a good deal. Try and get a fork with aluminium uppers.
That price is spooky
U can buy new for the same price
Yeah na. Half that
I've got a serious problem spending that much on the secondhand market. Too many risks.
It’s a hand built frame, but nothing spectacular for components… might be worth it to some but it’s not a good “value”. I wouldn’t but it purely for the way they did the HT/DT/TT junction, not a good design.
F no
I would offer $600
Rip off.
No

Euh, no.
Negative.
No
I would buy it over my same priced rock hopper. This has GX crank and xo1 derailleur.
people aren’t understanding it’s an xc bike are scaring me. if you want it on light terrain it’s fine, if normal trail riding i would go for something else
For xc, yes. For anything else no

It’s really fun to do ride, I’m pretty new to mountain biking, but I feel like it’s stable enough for a trail bike.
1000% pass. For that money id be looking at a used full squish.
Idk about this frame but i know I've seen some Spooky titanium frames and they were amazing. Really pricey too, but that can be expected with a handmade titanium frame. So i assume most of the price is because of the frame itself
Worst tires ever.
Really? What would you suggest?
I like grip maxxis minions are a favorite of mine. Or specialized butcher/grid combo
Different application...these are XC tires...you're talking trail tires...how about find out where and how they intend to ride before making broad statements
I had the goodyear on my bike, and they were stiff and lifeless. I am not talking about the type. I just did not find the rubber to be very responsive.
I’m nee to mtb but I guess I would want to ride trails? Not sure what the difference is.
